Toddlers Who Sleep Less May Eat More A new study indicates that toddlers who get too little sleep tend to eat more and are at increased risk for obesity, The study included over 1,300 children who had their sleep measured when they were 16 months old and their diet checked when they were 21 months old. Those who slept less than 10 hours a day consumed about 10 percent more calories than those who slept more than 13 hours. This is the first study to link the amount of sleep a child under the age of 3 receives to calorie consumption. The scientists think that children who sleep less may have a disruption in their hormones that regulates their appetite. Several earlier studies have found a correlation between children who slept less when they were younger with a higher rate of obesity at age 5. But it appears that this study might have discovered the exact reason why. This is just one more in a series of studies that point out the importance of your child getting a good night’s sleep. If you are having trouble with getting your youngster to sleep well, please let your Learning Consultant know. We are happy to share some proven techniques for getting your babe to fall asleep easily and stay asleep longer. If these techniques do not work, then it is time to talk to your baby’s doctor to see if there is a medical reason why your child in not sleeping well.

Healthy Eyes for Healthy Futures The early years of your child’s life are a critical period in vision development. How well your baby sees the world affects all parts of his or her life. A child may have a vision problem at any age. If not found and treated early, these conditions could lead to permanent vision loss. Vision problems may also affect your child’s ability to learn, play, do everyday activities and even play sports when they get older. Doing these things well is important to your whole child’s development, self-esteem and success in school. At TLC, all early intervention and Early Head Start children receive a vision screening within the first 45 days of enrollment. The screening helps identify if vision problems exist. This checks to see if eyes are healthy, align and follow moving objects. If we determine there might be a question about how your child sees, we will refer you for a more in depth examination.
