I am writing this article from Tel Aviv where I have spent the last three weeks visiting family and enjoying this incredible country. Having spent years in Tel Aviv studying as an undergrad, it truly feels like coming home to a city I love so much and know so well. I cannot wait to bring our CTJ Israel Trip here next summer – there is an endless amount of phenomenal experiences to share together.

One of the things that has shocked me over the past three weeks is the pace at which Israeli life (especially here in Tel Aviv) continues to evolve and change. Even when I am not in Israel, I watch a lot of Israeli TV, listen to Israeli radio and news daily, and read Israeli newspapers as soon as I wake up – so, I have a pretty good sense of the “pulse” of what takes place in the country. Nonetheless, to actually see the endless amount of building, technological advances, passion for creating a “better” Israel, has been so awe inspiring. In so many ways, I truly believe this country represents the best of the Jewish people and our religion.

Even with its many frustrations – the disgusting actions of the Israeli rabbanut (rabbinate), the difficulty in creating peace with the Palestinians, the deep gap between the rich and poor, I cannot get over the miraculous nature of what has been created over the past 70 years.

One place where Israel has always excelled has been in education. Israeli schools are often extremely innovative in their approach to learning. My family and I got a glimpse of this at a really neat exhibit currently taking place at the Diaspora Museum (Beit Hatfutzot) entitled “Giborim – Heroes.” The exhibit lets kids explore Jewish heroes and

As we walked away from over two hours in the museum, our family began an important conversation that I think is extremely relevant for this time of year – what values and actions are necessary when choosing a hero or role model? We know Mark Spitz was a great swimmer but was he a mensch? Did he give tzedakah and show kindness to others? One of the great results that came from our conversation was the realization that anyone has the ability to be a hero if we can think differently from others and find ways to achieve the unexpected. As Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz once said, “a Jewish life is one lived in awareness of the cognitive dissonance between the world that is and the world that should be.” It is from that “cognitive dissonance” that I believe the hero can emerge.

Our family also talked about heroes in our own society and how often we confuse who is a hero and who is a celebrity.

We lose sight of our role models and heroes because those who seem great are great solely because they are famous… when instead we should elevate people who are famous because they are great. For sure, even the quiet, humble, unknown individual can prove to be an unsung hero because of their courage, virtues, and determination.

This High Holy Day season, I encourage you to think of the heroes that surround us. When we ask our kids about their heroes do they say, “The Kardashians, Demi Levato, Conor McGregor?” Whom do we elevate because of their talent and whom do we elevate because of their character?

Maybe now is the time to have the conversation with our loved ones as to the values we want to uphold for ourselves, for each other, and for our world. And, maybe, in this coming year of 5779, we can rise up and in some small way become a gibor – become a hero! The Kalev Family wishes you a shanah tovah!

What makes a good Jew? Surely all future mother-in-laws have an opinion but let’s start at the beginning. If you go

by Jewish writings, there are 613 mitzvot that one should fulfill backed up by millions of pages of and more that one could learn from Torah, Talmud, Mishna, Halacha, Writings, Prophets. That doesn’t even include our oral tradition!

Jewish learning and practice, engaging in Jewish life (activities & holidays) are an essential part of being a Jew but it is so much more than that. The Jerusalem Post ran an opinion piece titled “In Plain Language: Who Is a ‘Good’ Jew?” by Rabbi Stewart Weiss on June 12th, 2014. He listed the following top 10 qualities; humility, chessed, justice, truth, modesty, scholarship, courage, faith, optimism & Israel with fabulous examples of how each plays a part in being a “good Jew”.

There is judgement everywhere. I would like to hope that at CTJ we look for ways to be good Jews and provide opportunities to create good in the world. We do it by saying prayers in appreciation for the blessings we have.

We do it by participating in social action activities, helping those in need. We do it by taking classes and learning more about Judaism. We do it by making a donation to our Jewish home (CTJ) so we can continue to provide services & school to everyone, regardless of financial status. We do it best when we show up for each other during shiva minyanim or joyous simchas.

What makes a good Jew? YOU make a good Jew by belonging to a CTJ and striving to be a better Jew/you!

The family enjoys living near the beach and engages in outdoor activities, including concerts and beach going.

After attending a Beach Shabbat last summer, the couple decided to join CTJ.

The CTJ community is excited to introduce Romina and Jeffrey Manson and their three boys, Jonah, ( 7 ½), Dylan, (5), and Asa, (1 ½) to our temple family!

Romina, born in Argentina, moved to the U.S. at the age of 7 while Jeffrey was born and raised in Southern California.

Romina, whose family lives in Redondo Beach, attended the University of Pennsylvania where she majored in International Relations. She received her MBA from the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia.

Following her studies, Romina lived in New York for two years, working in marketing.

Jeffrey attended UC Berkeley and earned his MBA at UCLA.

“We love the friendliness of the community. Everyone is so welcoming. Rabbi Kalev is warm and down to earth.

He interacts with the kids and gives them candy!”, says Romina.

Presently, their son Jonah attends Sunday school.

“I like the fact that the same children from the community participate in the Temple activities”, she adds.

The Mansons enjoy the major holiday services for families, especially the singing, and want to become more involved with community service.

“We are happy to be a part of the CTJ community and are grateful for the friends we have made.”

The CTJ family feels likewise about the Mansons!

The couple who were introduced through mutual friends have been married for 9 years and have lived in Manhattan Beach for five years where Jeffrey owns a publishing company.

“Jeffrey loves Jam Bands, and I exercise and make jewelry when I am not taking care of the boys”, says Romina. “We both love to travel to Europe, too.”

The start of school and the Fall holidays are upon us. I’m excited for the holidays and all the opportunities a new year presents. Although summer is fun, I look forward to welcoming all of our OEC students back for another fabulous year!

Because Hebrew is at the core of our curriculum - we’re working on our program to strengthen this important component. This summer we’ve been busy working on updating our Hebrew program and preparing to launch the OEC Hebrew Lab. The new Hebrew Lab will capitalize on our strength, with so many students we have the opportunity to divide the number of students we have, while continuing to provide small group and one on one Hebrew instruction. In the Lab students will receive small group instruction from one of our fabulous Hebrew teachers, work in small groups with partners on reading and listening skills. The curriculum from Behrman House Online Learning Center includes Hebrew music, games and prayer online. Students review what they learn weekly with their grade level teacher. This updated learning model will synchronize well with our “hands on learning” approach to Jewish education at the OEC. Rabbi Carrie

Third Friday Shabbat Our most fun, exciting, game-filled Shabbat service of the month. Our third Friday Shabbat is family oriented and often features a Hebrew School class or fun-theme. Days of Awe, Days of Joy, A Year of Giving Back •

During High Holidays, many of us reflect on the Jewish notion of tikkun olam (repairing the world) so you can start your New Year with a Mitzvah! On Rosh Hashanah we will have empty bags available for you to fill with Food Pantry wish list items including canned goods, cereal & other non-perishable food, diapers & other baby needs, shaving supplies and other toiletries, laundry soap & other cleaning supplies. Bring your bounty to services Yom Kippur day.

CTJ sponsors and prepares a meal for the homeless which is served on the third Tuesday each month.

September and October meal preparation will be on Sundays 2pm 9/16 and 10/14 at Project Needs, 2600 Nelson Ave, Redondo…a great way to learn the ropes!

We also collect for Project Needs year round - from canned goods to clothing – and donations can be left in the bin in the lobby. Looking for a mitzvah project for your group? Contact Stacy.Young@ctjmb.org about “adopting a month” at Project Needs.

Where there’s a need there a knitter!! “Knitzvot” holds monthly drop-in knitting days 2-7pm on the third Monday each month at CTJ…mentors are available if you would like to learn. The group creates pieces for local charities such as Blankets of Love. In November, Knitzvot will be donating hand-knitted hats at the VA home in West LA for Veterans Day. We continue involvement with Jewish World Watch as CTJ is represented on the Synagogue Advisory Council. There are many fascinating and inspiring events as well as JWW’S Teen Ambassador Program highlighting the work being done to combat genocide across the globe. Find out what you can do! Bring peace and balance to your life with yoga at CTJ. All level yoga class taught by Zvia Hempling or Robin Siegelman, long time CTJ members and registered yoga instructors. You can attend on a drop-in basis at $8/class. Students should bring their own yoga mats as well as a towel and water bottle. Please contact Zvia at yoga@ctjmb.org prior to your first class.

Wanna lead a hike? Host a game night or a movie outing? You just need to light a spark, pick a time and a place, and work with CTJ to publicize an activity you want to share with others at CTJ.

Imahot - Bakers Needed Embrace your inner Bubbe's baking skills! Come with a dessert recipe and make your favorite dessert for a Shabbat service or special event.
