Our wonderful Year 12 group finished their external examinations on Thursday 15th November, followed by an impressive graduation ceremony at the Park Hyatt in Melbourne that same evening. Many of our International students had parents and families here to help them celebrate and our local students had extended families at the event including some older siblings who had previously been students at TKIS. Over the next day or two, our International students moved out of the boarding houses and in most cases returned to their home countries. As I write this, our 59 students are scattered in many countries all over the world.

Many awards were presented on the evening, including the top student in each subject. There were also a number of community and service awards for students who had contributed significantly to the school and to the wider community. The two major academic awards were the General Excellence Award which was deservedly won by Jasmine Halford-Molinaro and the 2018 Dux Award which was won by an outstanding student and very impressive young man- Jack Heanly.

The award for the top International student was shared by Rata Sirimaharaj and Orkojeet Banerji. We hope and expect that these four students, along with some others, will achieve prestigious IB scores above 40 points.

For these four students as well as the other 55, we now have a nervous wait for the next month until results are released on January 3rd. On that day, our careers advisor, Mrs McCormick as well as a number of teachers will be at the school looking at the results and helping our students make appropriate tertiary course choices.

This Year 12 group has been an outstanding group of young adults who are now ready and very able to make their way in the world. We will miss them greatly at TKIS but moving ahead is what is supposed to happen and I am very confident that they will enjoy great success in the future and make very real and positive contributions to making a better world for us all.

Message from the Head of Science End of semester It was wonderful to see the young men and women who were our year 12 students this year at the Graduation Ceremony two weeks ago. They have so many plans for the future. We wish them all well in achieving their goals and hope that the IB results enable them to study the courses of their choice at university.

As the academic year comes to an end, teachers and students are finishing off the last topic(s) and revising this semester’s work in preparation for the examinations at the end of the semester. Students currently in year 11 have been planning and organising tasks for the holiday break: finishing Physics Internal Assessment tasks and continuing with Extended Essay research.

The Science faculty wishes all students well for their end of semester examinations and all families a safe and restful school break.

Message from the Head of Mathematics Over the past few weeks, I have had the pleasure of handing back the result certificates to the Australian Mathematics Competition held in August earlier this year. The certificates presented contain information about how each student performed across all 30 questions attempted. I have a detailed copy of the solutions to each question for interested students wishing to check their answers at a later stage. Next year, I look forward to extending the competition to include “The Maths Challenge” which will be available to those students looking to really advance their capacity to answer more complex and longer problem solving question types. I would also like to highlight the six students who achieved High Distinction Awards this year. These students are those that achieved scores within the top 2% of students participating in the competition. From the desk of the IB Coordinator 2018 has been an exceptionally busy year…but it doesn’t stop there for IB students!

Year 12s have commenced their lives beyond IB and all we can do is eagerly await the IB results which will be released on the 3rd January. While the IB Centre is noticeably quieter, we now turn our full attention to the new seniors of the school: Class of 2019.

The IB students will have lots of work to attend to on this break. The word ‘holidays’ offers too many temptations outside of school work so instead, a break from regular school attendance is how we choose to see this extended period away from TKIS. Students will be developing various Internal Assessment tasks for submission in 2019, their Extended Essay and various stages of research, experimentation, investigation, reading, analysis and drafting. This will certainly keep them busy and so, keeping motivated will be the primary personal goal for all.

Here is where we rely on parent support and partnership. While we hope there is definitely some time scheduled for rest and recreation, for family activity and for travel, we also hope that there is realistic time set aside to engage in the tasks students know are to be completed and submitted in their final year of IBDP. By utilising their time productively and accounting for what they do with it, students are on the healthiest path to managing their IBDP and the pressure they will feel at various times next year.

In all things, balance. The IB Learner Profile promotes this attribute in the aim of leading a fulfilled and successful life with positive well-being. This is a time when this attribute is obviously relevant and helpful.

So, to all, happy holidays. May it be a productive and meaningful period for you all.

Message from the Boarding Manager After a hectic year our boarders are now packing up, our senior girls are moving to Lumsden Street this weekend so they will be ready to just pick up their cases and head for the airport next Thursday.

The girls also had a farewell to Isabelle our intern who recently left, we were sorry to see her go she was a great help especially during study time. Most of the boarders went to the Twilight concert last Friday to support their fellow students who were performing they all enjoyed the night.

At the moment it is heads down studying, packing bags with the last weekend of Melbourne shopping before we head home. A lot of happy faces choosing their rooms for next year, some with new roommates and all looking forward to seeing their families again.

Boarders and Boarding staff wish everyone a safe and happy festive season. All looking forward to 2019.

UN Youth Voice TKIS has had amazing success in this year’s UN Public Speaking Competition. Year 8 students, Leo, Grace and Ed and Year 10 students, Eve and Oscar have been selected to compete in the National competition which takes place in Perth next April. To reach this stage, the students competed in the State Finals against 30 students from various schools across Victoria. It was therefore particularly commendable that of the 10 students selected to progress to Nationals, five were from TKIS! The UN Voice competition is very demanding as it requires students to develop innovative solutions to problems that seem to have confounded governments. Developing solutions to global and national problems requires careful research and creative thinking – skills essential for future citizens in a changing world.

In the State finals, held at Dockland Library, Grace spoke about ways in which refugees could be processed more efficiently by amending the 1951 UN Refugee Convention. She also suggested that the government needs to provide asylum seekers with more legal assistance to help them make their claim.

Leo and Ed both tackled the issue of providing sustainable and reliable energy sources for Australia, providing multifaceted approaches to the issue. Leo’s full speech can be read in this Newsletter.

Eve suggested that fair play and sportsmanship could be restored to Australian sport if salaries for professional athletes were capped. She further suggested that the extra revenue generated by the reduction in the salaries of some athletes could be used to narrow the gender pay gap in sport.

Oscar explained how the international community can reach its climate change goals by forming alliances with neighboring countries, with the aim of assisting each other to reach their targets. He called for nations to involve a broad spectrum of experts to tackle the problem, including scientists and business people rather than leaving it solely up to governments.

The students are looking forward to taking part in the Nationals next year when they will spend a week in Perth competing against students from across Australia as well as attending workshops and social events where they will be able to mix with like-minded young Australians.

Leo delivered this speech at the State Final of the UN Youth ‘Voice’ Competition. He was placed third in the competition, winning a place in the National Competition which takes place in Perth next year.

Good morning ladies and gentleman, in my speech this morning I will be addressing the constantly growing issue of the adequacy and sustainability of the Australian energy supply.

In 2013 Australia mined over 430 million tonnes of brown coal, which produced 542.1 million tonnes of carbon dioxide.

This is hugely damaging to our environment and, though the warnings have been going up for years, nothing much has happened. With the closure of Hazelwood, a coal-fired power station, being referred to as a “long overdue, but welcoming step” a scramble for alternative energy producers and energy plans began. With research into wind power, solar concentrators, hydropower and even wave generated electricity have yielded promising results, but there is still the argument raised by the right wing that coal is good for the economy and there is no other way to generate enough electricity for all of Australia. But when you think about, Australia should be a prime example of sustainable energy use and if are the goldilocks country for sustainable power, why do have so little.

Well, its all down to attitude. Australian politicians see coal as an easy way to generate our energy, and it is, it’s just destroying our planet in the process. There are three main things that governments look at when they talk about energy: Cost, Reliability and sustainability, in that order. The problem is to sway the politicians and consumers alike, while providing a reliable network and viable energy production. Which will requires several steps. I propose a 5-part process, 1. A clear policy framework that provides certainty for investment.

2. A tax on all big businesses using non-renewable energy sources.

3. A program where households that produce excess electricity can sell that energy to the grid.

4. Investment in renewable energy sources partially funded by the tax above.

5. Finally, a reliable distribution network that can respond to demand to supply and demand in different parts of the network.

The first step in this solution is to provide an unmoving and certain policy base that can be factored into the economic forecasts of the big mining businesses who are most likely to be affected. This certainty allows investment in the power supply industry while also enabling the users to adjust their economic plans. International businesses such as mining companies have often stated that they need a clear policy to gauge their position in Australia, relative to other countries. For example, a carbon tax is an economic policy that encourages reduction in the use of non-renewable energy that can be relied upon by the big mining businesses to be a “level playing field”, as they refer to it.

The next step is to deter the use of non-renewable energy by industries and businesses. We have seen time and time again that taxing something definitely discourages its use, for example tobacco, so there is no doubt that the tax on these businesses should discourage them from using unsustainable energy while, in the end, saving the business money in the long run. This should slash the use of grid network energy, sourced from coal mines, allowing that electricity to go to more people and at a lower price, thus making electricity cheaper and more accessible for all Australians.

Of course, it is not just businesses that should be using renewable energy, it is our everyday households as well. That’s where the 4th aspect of the solution comes in. Houses that make the change to solar power, arguably the easiest renewable energy source to install, often have an excess of energy during the day and if not, during the summer. I suggest a system where households can sell the energy they don’t need to the grid, thus creating an incentive for home owners to convert to renewable energy and adding renewable energy to the grid. Which begins the 5th step of this solution, making the entire grid renewable. Now this will take lots of time, research and money but with the rate of modern research and funds raised from the taxed big businesses, it can happen. All we need to provide renewable energy for every household connected to the grid in Australia is 6000 onshore wind turbines or 9,900 solar panels.

Those are tiny numbers in the grand scheme of things, proving that coal isn’t the only energy source that can provide enough power for all Australia.

However, now that we can produce all this energy, we need to distribute it. It’s often the case that blackouts and unreliability in our energy system is caused by the distributor, not the producer. We need a reliable super grid that can keep up with the supply and demand of our modern energy use. With these 5 separate solutions working together the Australian people will be assured of the sustainability, attainability, reliability and adequacy of their energy supply.

News from Language Department Korean Education Centre Donation Good news! The Director of Korean Education Center of Korean Consulate, donated $ 1200.00 generously on 12th of November 2018. This money is used to assist Korean students with their language and Australian and other international students to understand Korean cultures and language.

Young Ambassadors Program

Shrine Young Ambassadors are Victorian students going into Year 9 or 10 in 2019. As a Young Ambassador you will play an important role in connecting the Shrine with the people of Victoria. By becoming a Shrine Young Ambassador you will grow and develop your communication and leadership skills as well as your knowledge of history while you work to enhance community awareness about the Shrine.

Two TKIS students, Mansimer Kaur Gujral and Macklin Spicer applied for this program and have been appointed as 2019 Young Ambassadors for the Shrine. They were required to submit an application which included providing a Resume, answering a set of questions and providing a reference from a teacher or the Principal of their school.

These two students will join the other Shrine Ambassadors (8 – 12 students) at an induction day on Saturday the 1st December at the Shrine. During 2019 they will be involved in a number of skills training sessions and workshops, participate in both the Anzac Day and Remembrance services at the Shrine and will be part of a tour to Canberra during the June/July school holidays amongst other regular commitments over 2019.

Congratulations to both Macklin and Mansimer on this tremendous achievement and we look forward to hearing about their experiences during 2019.

Blue Victory in House Debating Competition Blue House has won the House Debating Competition for the fourth year running, narrowly beating Green House by one point. Yellow finished third, followed by Red House.

This year the competition was incorporated into the Wellbeing Program, resulting in a much wider participation than in previous years. Students have used the Extended Homeroom period to discuss the debate topics, prepare speeches and rebuttals and select speakers to represent their House. The competitive element has engaged students in discussing ethical issues and current affairs and has helped them develop teamwork, research skills and express ideas with confidence. It was impressive to see international students debating in the competition this year as it certainly takes courage to speak in front of an audience in a second language. International students who competed included Lily Ngai, Vincent Lin and Chloe Cai, Jocelyn Zhang, Daisy Phan and Lee Li. Thanks go to Year 10 students, Eve Simner and Oscar Mikic and Year 11 students Zach Squire, Ebony Eden and Lachlan Heywood for their assistance in judging the debates.

House Sports Carnival The House Sports Carnival was held on Friday 9th November. Students chose a sport for the day and participated in a round robin tournament against each House. Teams received 8 points (1st place), 6 points (2nd place), 4 points (3rd place) or 2 points (4th place) to go towards their House total. Congratulations to Mitchell for finishing the day in 1st place. Thank you to all staff for helping to run each event.

Duke of Edinburgh Adventurous Journey Students embarked on the final Duke of Edinburgh Adventurous Journey from October 10th-12th to the Goldfields Track formally known as the Great Dividing Trail. The track from Ballarat to Bendigo is 210km and winds its way through central Victorian towns, historical gold mining sites and woodland forests. The route we took is known as “Dry Diggings Track” over 3 days and 2 nights.

Beginning in Hepburn Springs where the largest concentration of mineral springs in Australia is found, students were able to taste the different the soda, sulphur and mineral types of springs. Then we were off on our way along the arduous track, up and down gullies and spurs before making our way for lunch at the Chocolate Mill. The afternoon’s walk took us past Mt Franklin, an extinct volcano to Porcupine Ridge for the evening’s camp. Setting up camp was a first for many of the participants, having to work out which poles go where and how to set up the tent. Digging the group toilet was also a first, making paths so no one would get lost in the night and finally enjoying the warmth of the fire and tasty food before bed after the challenging first day.

After the traditional ‘Penguin Dance’, students and teachers set off towards Vaughan Springs. After losing the track, students were introduced to ridge walking and using the road as a ‘catching feature’ knowing once we reached the road, we would turn right and follow this track to camp. It was a hot day and everyone was hanging on for a cool drink of water. This day was a good chance to talk to someone new and get to know people. Again upon reaching camp, we were rewarded with a refreshing swim in the river and a chance to rest aching feet.

The following day meandered along several tracks, in and out of towns, through Spring Gully Junction mine which was a quartz mine and still has the remains the stone engine beds, mortar blocks for the crushing battery and the partially collapsed chimney stack.

The bus was a welcome site for hungry and tired participants and all were able to reflect on such great achievements with perseverance and determination to completing such a tough walk. The highlights were the echidna we came across, the swim in the river and completing the walk.

German Baking

Bratapfel Baked apples are a simple dessert made from oven-baked apples. They are traditionally made in the winter at Christmas time from storable, firm and sour apple varieties such as Boskoop.

Getting hungry?

Traditional Bratäpfel INGREDIENTS: 2 Tbl unsalted butter 2 Tsp butter for greasing the baking dish 1/2 cup almond meal 1/2 tsp cinnamon (optional) adjust amount according to your taste 2 Tbl dark or yellow raisins (optional) ½ cup apricot jam

Preheat oven to 200°. You will need a muffin tray. Liberally apply butter inside the muffin tray so apples don’t stick.

Mix the remaining ingredients together until well combined.

Wash apples and grab a corer. When coring the apples, don’t core through to the bottom. Start at the stem side and core ¾ way down, leaving the bottom ¼ of the apple intact so that the filling won't run out of the bottom. Scoop out enough apple pulp with corer or spoon so that you have an opening in which to place the filling. Fill the apples with even amounts of filling and place the filled apples in the muffin tray.

Bake for 30 minutes at 200°. Baking time can be adjusted according to preference. If you would like apple to be harder, reduce baking time. If you would like a softer apple, increase baking time.

Best served with ice cream.

Drama Showcase On Wednesday the 21st of November, all the drama students from Year 7-10 performed at the drama showcase.

For the entirety of Term 4, the drama students have been writing, directing, acting and costuming in preparation for this event. The Year 7s organised group performances which focused on mythological stories. The Year 8s had written and acted out their plays which followed the style of Japanese theatre known as Kabuki. This style of theatre is characterized by heavy narration and the actors wearing masks. As result these were visually very interesting and contained captivating action scenes. The Year 9s performed modernised versions of Shakespeare with playful twists on the well-known stories which were very entertaining. The Year 10s chose either to perform a scene of their choice with a group or to perform a monologue of their choice from the Year 12 VCE curriculum. Using a variety of techniques such as varied tone, characterisation and minimalistic costuming and props, they performed alone under very nervewracking conditions. The quality of these performances showed the level which students at TKIS can reach in the drama program. Overall, the night was highly enjoyable with a casual atmosphere to allow students to perform their fantastic pieces.

A big thanks to Ms Logan for organising the event and guiding the students through their work during the term.

Especially for encouraging particularly the Year 10s to have confidence in their performing abilities and take on a monologue.

Mission: Cambodia January 2020

Students who participated in the last Mishcam trip (January 2018) have been fundraising for the next trip all throughout Term 4, with Ice cream Fridays and The Little Kitchen Window and by running a CKF stall at the TKIS Fair. We are raising lots of money to put to excellent use in Soksan Village and towards the delivery of quality IB education at Soksan International School (the first FREE International school in Cambodia). The use of this money is witnessed first-hand when we are there, which is the reason we are such staunch defenders and supporters of this charity organisation.

Students who will be in Year 11 or 12 in 2020 are able to include this experience in their IB CAS program as a CAS Project, as it allows them to meet the target outcomes of Creativity, Action and Service in full.

A reminder to our parents of interested students to pay a deposit of $500 by the start of Term 1, 2019. This is to secure flights and confirm our trip with the Cambodian Kids Foundation. It would be

very disappointing to miss this opportunity to travel; our minimum number is 5 student travellers.
