Message from the Head of Learning indiViduals and Societies The world of Economics never stands still. Inflation for a long time was regarded as the big problem and the common approach was that if you control Inflation then the other economic objectives would also be achieved. In order to control Inflation Central Banks around the world commenced ‘Inflation Targeting’, whereby their main role was to reduce inflation to the desired level. The main policy weapon was to be Monetary Policy, and the manipulation of interest rates, rather than relying on Government Fiscal/ Budgetary Policy. Over time it was considered that the Inflation genie had been tamed and that the world economy would continue on its merry way with consistent Economic Growth and generally stable economies.

Australia commenced inflation targeting in 1994 and the benefits, in terms of stable inflation, can be seen on the diagram below. Since the mid 90’s the inflation rate has been much more stable and the Reserve Bank of Australia would meet monthly to decide on any changes to interest rates, taking into account the likelihood of the Inflation rate moving above the inflation target of 2-3%.

The Global Financial Crisis changed everything and all of a sudden inflation was not such a concern; high levels of unemployment and deflation were a much greater issue.

Traditional Monetary Policy failed to restart the struggling economies. The USA, EU and the UK cut interest rates to close to zero, however, the economies failed to respond and were still stuck in recession and a deflationary spiral.

Central Banks in the USA, UK, EU and Japan in desperation turned to a novel idea called ‘quantitative easing’ (QE).

In this radical approach the central banks created money “out of thin air” – some would called it printing money. They then used this money to buy government bonds from banks,

and the public, with the intention of increasing the amount of money in the hands of the banks and public. The increased money supply was intended to further increase borrowing and consumption and kick start the economy. At the same time the increase in money supply would tend to decrease the value of the local currency – depreciation of the currency – and stimulate increased exports and reduce imports which are a leakage from the economy. Did it work? Time is yet to tell. Additionally the price of government bonds rose making them a less attractive investment and therefor encouraging investors to explore more risky investments.

Another more radical approach is that of ‘helicopter money’. This has become a bit of a buzz word around the school with the likes of Mr Peter Morfea espousing its value. What is it, does it involve a helicopter? Essentially it involves the central bank once again “creating money” and then providing the funds for the federal government to spend where it wishes. In some ways this is similar to what the Rudd Labor Government did during the GFC whereby they deposited money into family bank accounts. However this was not Helicopter money as the Rudd Government borrowed the money rather than using ‘created money’. As I said earlier, the world of Economics never stands still. Message from The Head of Mathematics Hi all, A great night was had by all who attended the Year 12 Standard Level Competition held on Wednesday. The competition is specifically designed to assist students prepare for their mathematics examinations. Teams were separated according to class teachers and this year Ms Burn’s class (dressed in red fire chief hats) were held to a draw by a great late come-back from Dr Tanko’s class, in what was a high tension and thrilling finish to a great evening. This year we had a huge crowd of interested students from a number of year levels attend the competition. I would like to give a special thanks to teacher Ms Chueng, Ms Burns, Mr Lineage, Mr Wright, Mr Kerr, Mr Pharoah and lastly to the great Mr Gregory for helping make the night a terrific success.

And now for the answer to the last newle�er’s ques�on: The reverse of the number 129 is 921, and these add to 1020, which is divisible by 30. How many three-digit numbers have the property that, when added to their reverse, the sum is divisible by 30?

Well, that was quite a tricky Question.

This newsletter’s question is a little easier.

Message from The Arts Concert at The Elms Thirteen students gave a wonderful end of term concert at The Elms in September. A full house gave our students such a rich and appreciative reception. They loved it!!!

The resident, Junia Rath, who has already kindly donated all huge amount of sheet music to us just recently, following the passing of her husband Gunther Rath (who was once in Vienna Boys’ Choir) has now donated an electric organ to the school! Amazing generosity!

Unfortunately, our former principal, Alan Willcox, was unable to attend. He was in hospital with some serious heart and lung problems. As this goes to print, Alan is back at The Elms convalescing.

When you see any of these fine young musicians, please give them a big congratulations. Each and every one was a fine ambassador for our school.

Many of these students, plus some other singers, flautists and pianists, are currently preparing for AMEB music exams. This is our last session of exams for 2017. We have seen great success in all the exams this year. Many thanks to our wonderful music staff for nurturing and training the students for these (sometimes traumatic but always worthy) significant milestones in their musical journeys.

Orchestra Victoria – “On the mOVe� Bendigo regional workshop In the week before Term 3 commenced, Tim Spain (year 10) and Natalie Hook (year 12) represented TKIS at a high level regional workshop and performance run by Orchestra Victoria. They are both flute players and enjoyed challenging themselves with this intensive and high pressure three days of learning approximately ten works of orchestral repertoire. They worked with the Flute mentor, Melissa Doecke, a Melbourne based flautist of international acclaim.

This is the second time that Tim and Natalie have attended this event. They presented works by Sibelius, Khatchaturian, Strauss, Bellini, Haydn and Verdi, to name a few. This event was recorded and is available for viewing - enquiries to see it can be made through the Music Office.

Many thanks to Ms Deborah Ross for not only instigating this wonderful initiative, but also for voluntarily coaching Natalie and Tim and being at the workshops and concert. A huge commitment on top of her already very full life of teaching and parenting!!

Message From the Year 12 Coordinator Over the last week of Term 3 and the first week of the holidays the Year 12 students embarked upon a full sequence of MOCK examinations. These examinations replicated the timing and sequence of examinations that the students will experience at later in October and November. I would like to commend the Year 12 students on the way in which they conducted themselves during the MOCK examinations. They all arrived punctually, generally with the required equipment and embarked on the process with earnest. Whilst some of the results that were achieved were perhaps disappointing for some, it should be looked upon as an excellent learning experience and an opportunity to improve in the remaining weeks.

Year 12 final reports were made available earlier this week. These reports reflect a 50% contribution from the MOCK examinations as well as a 50% contribution from other ongoing assessments such as essays, tests, practical work and the like. In many cases the examination marks have been modified upward to be consistent with the grade boundaries for the particular examination papers and the relevant boundaries that are indicated on the bottom of the summary page (page 2) of the report. If there are any problems with the report please contact student reception.

It is now that time of the year when the weather is starting to warm up and we are experiencing some lovely sunny days. Whilst this might mean a bit more leisure time outside for some, it is now the time that our Year 12’s are in the final stages of revision prior to their final examinations (a schedule can be found elsewhere in this newsletter with approximate start and finish times). For our students the examination commences on Tuesday 31st October with the final examination on Thursday 16th November, Graduation Day. Prior to the examination period the students will have a final “leavers” day on Friday 27th October. This will start with a BBQ breakfast down at the Language Centre at 8:00 AM followed by the “leavers” assembly during Period 1 (8:45 to 9:40), which parents/guardians are welcome to attend. Thereafter students will go out of school for some fun activities and lunch and then return for the traditional staff versus students soccer match on the top field during Period 7 (2:35 – 3:30PM). Monday 30th October will be a non-instruction day for students in preparation for examinations. It is important in the period leading up to the examinations and during the examinations that students remember to look after their health. This means eating well, getting plenty of sleep and also taking some time out to have some exercise. Please be aware that examinations will run on the Monday 6th November (school closed for other classes) and Melbourne Cup Day, Tuesday 7th November with both Public Transport and the Assumption buses being affected.

Finally, I wish our students the best of luck and I look forward to seeing the many parents, relatives and friends along with our Year 12 students at the Graduation night at the RACV Club in the city on Thursday 16th November. It should be a lovely evening celebrating the culmination of secondary schooling for our wonderful group of students.

Message from the Head of Learning - Language A “The art of communication is the language of leadership.” James Humes What is a leader without the ability to communicate confidently and sincerely, to share through words a vision, to inspire others to achieve greatness? Our students of the International Baccalaureate become very familiar with the IB Learner Profile, seeking to become communicators who “understand and express ideas and information confidently and creatively in more than one language and in a variety of modes of communication”. The Language faculties seek to develop this skill in our students as they search for their personal sense of self and how they fit in with others and into their world. Through the study of various aspects of language and literature, students are exposed to the words and ideas of those who have gone before them; the artistry and the purpose of the works we keep alive in our classrooms still find their place in the young minds of a new audience.

Students of Chinese, English, Japanese, Korean, Thai and Vietnamese study various genres of literature, both in their original language and in translation, ranging from short stories to poetry to Shakespeare. Their studies of original works are complemented by film viewings and where possible, incursions or excursions to allow students to experience the works live. In this way, students learn not only from their expert classroom teachers, but also from the wise and skilled writers of various global cultures and civilisations. This was evident this year, when Year 10 students went to the theatre to watch the MTC production of ‘Macbeth’ performed on the live stage. Year 9 students were treated to the Bell Shakespeare workshop on ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and the 7-9 students, to the ‘Shakespeare Is Dead’ workshop, both held on school campus.

Students are encouraged to engage in active study that tests their confidence as well as their literacy. For example, teachers promote the enjoyment of Shakespeare in the classroom by incorporating student performance of scenes into weekly lessons. This was evident in the Year 7 student performances of ‘Twelfth Night’ here at school.

Maria Montessori Again, we look forward to receiving the 2017 IB results in January, anticipating the success of many of our students in their mother tongue subject. Relationships forged between student and teacher, in the shared study of literature, are not easily forgotten and students often return as alumni to share their news with the school mentors. In this way, the study of language has facilitated the development of the personality of education and established a deep understanding between people therein. Teachers of Language A are not only specialists in this subject, but passionate role-models who love literature and are eager to pass on an aspect of our cultural heritage that never dies.

Message from the Head of Learning - Language B Time flies, and it is nearly the end of the school year. In Term 3, we welcomed an enthusiastic young German teacher Miss Verena Kuehn to our team. Now, we have Room 107 as our German room. Thanks to all of our language B teachers for your dedication, persistence and hard work!

Excursions Year 6 Chinese B class extended their culture experience in the Chinese Museum at Melbourne at the beginning of Term 4. They joined a 1 hour guided tour and participated in a Chinese calligraphy workshop.

Calligraphy Workshop

By Oliver Robinson Year 6 The first activity we did when we got to the Chinese Museum in Melbourne, was a calligraphy lesson.

We sat down at desks where given brush pens, which are the best things to use when doing calligraphy. A sheet of A3 opaque paper was given to us to write on, we started to write the basic Chinese characters, followed by more complex characters.

Each character had a certain amount of strokes, and an order to do them in. The character with the most strokes had over 62 strokes! On our A3 paper we practiced doing complex characters that we were capable of learning, we practiced a certain one or two characters that we found interesting, until we felt confident writing them onto the special paper. Unlike the A3 opaque paper, which was kind of slippery to write on, the special paper had a lot more drag when writing on it with the brush pen. When we finished our published character on the special paper, we were told that we could take them home as a souvenir.

Overall I had a great time doing calligraphy, and feel that I learnt a lot about this unique way of writing.

Guided Museum Tour

By Aarushi S. Year 6 Last week the Year 6’s went to the Chinese Museum in Melbourne. The first thing we did at the Chinese museum was go to our calligraphy workshop on the third floor. At the workshop we used soft ink brushes which were really interesting to use. After the workshop we saw a small exhibition of what the Chinese were famous for. In that exhibition we learnt that Chinese people were very famous in medicines. The next display we saw was about inventions Chinese people have made, I learnt many things from that exhibit. The Chinese even invented a compass, which is very useful in these modern times. It was nice to learn something new in a different way.

Once we had walked into an open room there was a glass box there protecting an armour made out of precious but old jade pieces. People in our class kept asking so many questions, but the 12 | TKIS Newsletter 9 2017

answers probably turned into knowledge. Afterwards we walked down the stairs two levels and went to see the life of the Chinese when the English people came to China. It was really fun but scary because it was a little dark in the basement. All of us walked through a congested room which was a replica of the rooms on the English ships. The tiny room was moving side to side as if it were on the sea.

After looking at all that history we went back up to the level we all walked in from and checked out the Chinese New Year dragon. The dragon was jaw-dropping, it was so long and colourful that it opened up my eyes as wide as my eyes can go.

After we (Finlay) had asked any last questions we left off to the food court. The museum was really engaging and interesting and I am pretty sure that everyone learnt something new there…

Year 11 Japanese ab initio Excursion Year 11 Japanese ab initio class went on a Japanese excursion in Melbourne. They attended the Hokusai Exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria. The curator of Japanese arts who stayed in Tokyo for 2 years gave the one hour lecture about the works of Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai. Students were able to take time and see various works after the lecture.

2018 TKIS China Trip The approximate 10-day trip is proposed to embark on the last day of Term 3 next year, the 20th September 2018. The program will be initiated with a minimum number of 10 students. Students studying Chinese B subject in Year 9 and 10 have the priority to register for the program as the trip would be a perfect opportunity for them to extend their language learning outside the school context. Students from other LOTE subjects are also welcome on board.

2018 TKIS Indonesian Trip 13 students will visit cities including Yogyakarta, Solo, and the island of Bali from 29th June to 7th July 2018. On the Indonesian Trip, students will discover cultural tours throughout the cities of Solo and Yogyakarta and will be given a unique opportunity to learn about the distinctive culture of Central Java. Activities will include watching a puppet show and listening to a Gamelan orchestra as well as more hands-on activities such as learning how to make a leather puppet and a visit a tofu and tempeh factory. We will also visit the famous temple Borobudur, and several nearby villages.

In Bali, students can visit ‘Water Boom Park’ and will watch famous Barong and Keris Dances.

Students will also experience a ‘Daily Life and Farming Program’ which is a great introduction to the very different lifestyle in Indonesia!

Time to say goodbye to our Year 12 students. On behalf of our Language B teachers, I wish our class of 2017 every success in their exams and in their future beyond.

We should stop celebrating Australia Day Daniel Gower-Hall Good afternoon everyone, I’m the 2nd speaker for the Affirmative team. I’ll be explaining why we should stop celebrating Australia day and why we should celebrate Federation instead.

It’s absurd to celebrate Australia day when taking into consideration what Australia day actually celebrates, a day where Australia was not a nation as we know it today. Australia in 1788, the arrival of the first fleet, was many separate Aboriginal tribes soon to be terrorised by the new British arrivals and turned into six self-governed colonies of the British. Why do we continue to celebrate our a nation on a day that commemorates when we weren’t actually a nation?

Federation Day would be more appropriate as Australia’s national day as it would not be connected with any signs of conflict with the indigenous peoples of the land. The day may also be seen as a positive for indigenous people as it celebrates the day where Australians broke away from their past as an invading country and have developed as a more accepting and multicultural country.

Federation is an event of large cultural significance to Australia which happened on the 1st of January 1901. This event marks when the separate British colonies of Australia united as one and became a nation free from British rule. Surely this is the day we should be celebrating.

Looking across the globe Federation Day is already a tried and tested method by flourishing countries around the world; The 4th of July is the most well-known example as it is celebrates America’s independence from Britain but America isn’t the only country to do this. India’s national day also celebrates its independence from Britain, Finland its Independence from Russia and Brazil its independence from Portugal and these are among many other countries around the world that celebrate their country’s Independence.

Another reason why Federation day would be more acceptable is that it would be closer to the festive season and therefore more celebratory. It is already seen that there a lack of celebrations during Australia day. For example the Yarra Council and the City of Darebin have already scrapped Australia day celebrations because of surveys done on citizens of these areas. In fact the only people who could celebrating this day are the British as a day of conquest and as Australia is a multicultural society this simply not acceptable.

So what would happen to the ceremonies that do exist on Australia day? Our national day being placed at the start of the year on January 1st would be more appropriate for various celebrations that take place already including Australian of the year awards and citizenship ceremonies. What better time to have these events than the start of the New Year. Why give out Australian of the year awards on a day which is almost at the end of the first month of year. Federation day could also incorporate more festivities and ceremonies of a multicultural nature. For example public markets could be held to explore different cultures of the world including food, dance, song and many other activities.

To conclude the affirmative team believes that it is not appropriate for Australia, a multicultural nation, to have their national day set on one of such insignificance to our nationhood. Rather a more appropriate day would be on none other than Australia’s own Independence Day, federation, which celebrates Australia becoming its own nation and an independent body from British rule.

Korean Performance Contest Reflection

By Yi Ng Korean pop(K-pop) has always been something that I have been interested in. I came to this school and tried to start a K-pop group after seeing a K-pop tv show as well as meeting many good friends who were interested in K-pop. My teacher Mr. Koo encouraged us to take part in this competition to showcase our talents and our appreciation for K-pop. We came up with ‘N-Sense’ as our group name. Our group members include Yi Ng, Insung Choi, Duke Li, Johnson Zhang, Terry Ma, Darius Park and Oscar Liu. Being the leader of the group, I learned to be patient and tolerant in order for the group to successfully work together. It was not easy to practice dance and keep up with my IB school work at the same time. So, being well organised was very important during this journey. Sometimes, it was not easy to learn complicated dances from the video, but, through teamwork we were able to complete the dance and perform it in sync. It was also important to try our best on the stage so as not to disappoint the audience.

During this journey of performing, I have improved many skills; such as socializing with people from different cultures; improved my dancing skills; being more confident on stage and more.

These skills also help me to achieve CAS requirements, which includes becoming more caring, open-minded and being a risk-taker and a communicator. Most importantly, it gives me the opportunity to be creative, active and a service to the school and community. For example, when I performed in the Wallan Food Truck Festival and the Twilight Concert.

Overall, it was a fun and exciting experience for us to join the competition. Although we did not win any of the first 3 places for the competition, we still received a participation award and certificate which was still a great achievement for us. So, it is not all about the prize, but, about enjoying what we like to do and having fun with each other. If there are more chances to showcase my talent in the future, I would love to participate in those events and hopefully gain more experiences as well as interact with other people who love K-pop as much as I do.

Year 10 Ball Kriti Bhoomla The year 10 ball was a tremendous finish to the term for all year 10 students. After spending 7 weeks learning and perfecting the dance steps, our performance went extremely well. The night began with all the students entering the hall, looking fantastic in their smart suits and glamorous dresses. The main dance was performed from 7-7:30pm and once this was over, everyone was free to mingle and dance in their own style. There was a DJ, and everybody had an amazing time moving to their favourite songs with their friends. This was a very enjoyable and fun night, which gave the year 10 students a chance to get to know each other better and spend time with those who they usually don’t interact with. This night was made more enjoyable when awards were given out towards the end.

Year 11 Formal Maneet Hora On September the 8th, Year 11 students enjoyed a great evening at La Mirage in Somerton. The Year 11 Formal was inaugurated last year and is now a popular annual event on the TKIS calendar. In the days running up to the Formal, students were to be seen eagerly discussing what they were going to wear and how they were going to style their hair and make-up. The night, which had very much been anticipated for weeks, kicked off with excitement. It was wonderful to have a formal dinner with friends and teachers before entering into Year 12. During the evening awards were presented for Best Dress Male and Female. The upbeat music had everyone up on their feet dancing. The evening will be remembered as a time of fun and laughter shared with friends and teachers.

CAS Camp Riddhi Sharma In the first week of the term 3 holidays, the year 11 students went to Camp Howqua for the annual CAS Camp. Whilst the weather was indecisive, and many bemoaned the lack of cellphone reception, everyone enjoyed the large variety of activities offered at the camp.

On the first day we took part in initiative and problem solving activities – an activity which encouraged us to bond with people we don’t often get to talk to as much. The following day, we completed different activities, including high ropes, archery, a survivor course and flying fox. For many, this was seen as the most adrenaline-filled day, as the camp staff, teachers, and our friends helped us conquer our fears and challenge ourselves. For many, including myself, this allowed us to get over our fear of heights, even if it was simply a climb up the ladder!

Each night there were different events organized by Mr Koo and other teachers and students. The first night Mr Koo organized a trivia night. Competing groups enthusiastically answered multiple questions and by the end 2 groups were awarded prizes for attaining the highest score. On the last night there was a video presentation, showcasing the different groups in action. The evening was then topped off with a talent show which gave students the opportunity to demonstrate their talents - some extraordinary and others quite weird, like onion eating!

Overall, the camp was a wonderful experience, and was a great opportunity for us to make new friends and spend time with old friends in the beautiful setting of Victoria’s High Country.

Below are some personal recounts from some year 11 students “CAS Camp was rather exhilarating. We arrived in rather dampened due to a long bus trip and rainy weather but after the first set of activities and exploring our cabins, it turned into a rather enjoyable experience. The first supper was scrumptious and my entire cabin slept like a dream. The next day we were blessed with fine weather and the activities were delightful! In the evening there was a talk from Mrs McCormick who gave us much needed and crucial information about the challenges that await us later in life. On the final day my group did the survival challenge, which was an intense test of our physical strength and involved a waterslide that provided us with boundless joy. After that day’s activities we rested for an hour until the talent show commenced and we saw many different acts such as a comedian, many dancing groups and even a group of legends who ate an onion on stage. Afterwards there were some bangers being played in the main room and some people started dancing in a rather ridiculous fashion but I, being a man of character, decided to get some sleep. The next day, with heavy hearts, we packed up our rooms, participated in our final activities and departed the fine camp which concluded a rather stupendous experience. 7/10 would do again”- Wilson Tautkus “ I found the high ropes very challenging yet exciting. Year 9/10 Holiday Study Camp

By HUANG, Sen-Ai (Isabelle) 10A Thanks to a few days’ trip to Camp Jungai for the Holiday Study Camp, I have learnt and experienced a lot of wonderful things there. 40 people participated in this camp and we were divided into 3 different groups. We were taught in each subject each day of the camp which include Science, Mathematics and ESL. The lessons we learnt in camp are extraordinary, one of them was building a tall structure using spaghetti with the help of Trigonometry and Geometrics in Maths. The most unforgettable activity I had participated in were the water activities which include canoeing and raft building, along with obstacle activities such as high ropes and initiatives. The past activities have taught me courage, bravery, teamwork and perseverance. Also, Camp Jungai offered daily delicious and nutritious meals which could satisfy our hungry taste buds. We have night activities, and among all of them, Cultural Story Telling was a great experience. We all sat down and formed a big circle, while an experienced Indigenous Senior shared with us about many things that are not found in our own daily school books. In addition to that, she also taught us a very sweet lullaby song which was passed down for many generations. Among all the things I have participated and experienced, I realised everything we did in camp was about communication. Thus, I would like to thank TKIS for this unforgettable camp as I had made many new friends and had come to love enjoying the view of Mother Nature. All in all, Camp Jungai is a place full packed of fun and adventurous activities which is worth trying.

TKIS SCHOLARSHIPS The Kilmore International School is pleased to offer a number of Academic Scholarships.

All candidates are required to sit the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) academic scholarship which is held at TKIS in March each year.

Scholarships are awarded by the Principal based on performance in the ACER scholarship test and are offered as a remission on tuition fees. Please note that scholarships will be reviewed annually and may be withdrawn if the conditions of acceptance are not met.

An ACER application fee of $95.00 is required when registering for the scholarship.

Quantum Excursion On the 10/16/17 Grade 6 went to Quantum Victoria for a Numeracy excursion as an introduction to our unit on Data & Statistics. At Quantum we played Xbox 360 Kinect, which is a video game console where you use your body to play sport, rather than a controller. The aim of this excursion was to learn how to calculate the mean, median, mode and range from data that we collected. We played sports such as soccer, track and field and bowling on the Kinect and then we transferred our scores into mean, median, mode and range.

In soccer, Maddi scored 103 goals which was extremely good. I thought this was very impressive as I only scored 39! We used our own soccer scores to make a scatter plot on graph paper. Then David (instructor) collected all our results in a table and created a massive scatter plot on Excel.

This helped us to further our understanding about graphs. We discussed trends and relationships between time and the scores. Everyone loved this excursion because it was a really fun way to learn Maths!

After this excursion we were introduced to our Data and Statistics project for the term. We have to select an investigation question and design a way to collect information to answer the question at school. For my project I am investigating if boys or girls can score more runs on Xbox Kinect Baseball. Everything we learnt at Quantum Victoria will help us to complete our project. I hope I can go back to Quantum again because everyone loved this excursion.

Ding Dong! Double Bell Shakespeare!

Eve Simner Bell Shakespeare Year 9 Excursion Last term, the Year 9 students in Ms Mills’ and Ms Gower’s class went to the Arts Centre in Melbourne to participate in a creative workshop on Romeo and Juliet run by Bell Shakespeare. We had been studying Romeo and Juliet throughout term three and this workshop was a great way for us to broaden our understanding of how the play would have been performed in Shakespeare’s time.

However, when we arrived at the venue it seemed there was a slight glitch. To our teachers’ dismay, a Macbeth based workshop had been prepared instead of one on Romeo and Juliet! Luckily, the Bell Shakespeare workshop leader was able to adapt really quickly and pulled together a few activities that explored the comic aspects of the play as well as Shakespeare’s use of imagery. Overall, everyone had a lot of fun projecting their voices, hurling Shakespearean insults at each other and getting to grips with iambic pentameter – the rhythm that pulses through all of Shakespeare’s plays.

Bell Shakespeare Years 7 – 9 Incursion In the final week of Term 3, years 7 – 9 were very lucky to be treated to a performance of Shakespeare Is Dead, a show presented by three actors from Bell Shakespeare. The piece aimed to teach students all about the life of Shakespeare and his plays. It made references to all plays that students had been studying: Twelfth Night (Year 7), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Year 8) and Romeo and Juliet (Year 9). It was very relevant and made learning Shakespeare a lot easier for many students.

The performance covered soliloquies, iambic pentameter, deaths, tragedies, comedies and love in a very entertaining way. Students were invited to participate by playing parts alongside the Bell Shakespeare professionals. Most people’s favourite part was when Ms Gower played Gertrude from Hamlet in a very dramatic way. No-one could disagree that is was spectacular and very surprising for many (who knew she had it in her?!). I certainly would gladly watch it again!

Year 3 numeracy This week Year 3 have started their Numeracy topic of Measurement. Students enjoyed the hands on activities exploring mass and capacity. We were able to take advantage of the beautiful Spring weather and use water to investigate the difference between millilitres and litres and make comparisons when using different shaped vessels.

A word or two from Drama Year 9 this term is working on an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. We have injected the noble tale with humour and physical action. There will be a mix of English and Chinese spoken as we tackle the Bard’s Elizabethan language. Students are currently rehearsing an expeditious prologue, unusual and unexpected Witches’ scene and a series of atmospheric monologues. The Showcase will be presented during school time to invited audiences early in November, date to be advised.

Year 10 this term have worked diligently on their original and thought-provoking Theatre Of The Absurd production of “REQUIEM”. It is a short play on the theme of ‘power’. Conventions of Absurdist theatre guide the production. There will be an adventurous stage layout, gymnastic performance and unusual twists. It will also be presented during school time to invited audiences early in November, date to be advised.
