CHALLENGE CHALLENGE

June 3-August 3, 2024

Take the Summer Reading Challenge

The Des Moines Public Library’s 2024 Summer Reading Challenge kicks off Monday, June 3! Children of all ages and their families can stop by any Des Moines Public Library location to sign up, get a free book, and have the chance to win fun prizes just for reading and engaging in learning activities this summer.

The Summer Reading Challenge helps kids retain reading and literacy skills they gained throughout the school year. “Kids have lots of access to books and reading materials, but when the school year ends, that access disappears,” DMPL Community Engagement Manager Ashley Molzen said. The Summer Reading Challenge encourages kids to come to the library, discover new interests, and find something to read that engages them.

DMPL Summer Checkout Challenge

June 3-August 3, 2024

June 3-August 3, 2024 FOR ADULTS

Taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge is free and easy. In addition to a new book to take home and keep, kids get an activity log sheet when they sign up. Read for 20 minutes or complete one of the summer reading activities chosen by our librarians, and you fill in one of the spaces on the sheet. Fill in all the spaces, and you’ll win small prizes and become eligible for a big prize at the end of summer.

Challengers can also take the challenge by signing up and tracking activities with the library’s Beanstack app. Find more online at dmpl.org/summer-reading

The challenge is split into three age groups: Simple Steps pre-readers, elementary school age, and grades 6-12.

Adult Summer Checkout Challenge

Our Summer Checkout Challenge gives adults the opportunity to win prizes by reading books and checking out materials from the library.

It’s easy to take part – just go to your favorite library location and ask for a Summer Checkout Challenge form. Follow the instructions to complete the form and turn it in to be eligible for our prize drawings, which include swag like magnets and t-shirts. You can even have multiple entries for every time you complete the challenge! To sign up, stop by any of our six library buildings beginning June 3.

Kickoff party!

This year, the library is hosting a special Summer Reading Kickoff Party on Sunday, June 2 from 1-3 PM at Central Library. The whole family can enjoy an afternoon of activities:

• Littles can enjoy a live musical performance from Mr. K’s Clubhouse and have some fun in the open play room featuring the Simple Steps: READ, WRITE, SING, PLAY & TALK!

• Kids can try fun games like Plinko and show off their creativity with graphic novel activities.

• Teens can attend a comic workshop with Basi Affia, comic creator and owner of Des Moines’ own Sensiil Studios, challenge friends to Nintendo Switch games, and make manga and graphic-novel collage art.

There will be photos with magical princesses, awesome superheroes, and our favorite community mascots, as well. But that’s not all: Youth ages 0-18 can sign up early for the Summer Reading Challenge and get a free book with a special Summer Reading Kickoff bag!
