"Every year, TJ Latin comes together to paint a bunch of Classics-inspired pumpkins and students compete in a range of categories. This year, because we were viirtual, we broadened the definition of the word "pumpkin" and had people work in teams to compete! Although there were categories like "cutest" and "most artistic," the "best meme" category was by far the most popular!" -Artifex Reva Hirave

Saturnalia

crescite et multiplicamini (MD) grow and multiply

In a normal year, TJ Latin Students exchange gifts in December when we celebrate Saturnalia in all classes from Latin I to Latin V. Students prepare songs, poems, and small gifts in English or Latin to honor their randomly chosen recipient. However, this year, due to the virtual environment, the gift giving portion of this even was cancelled and students would write poems/songs to their chosen classmate.

" Now, I can’t go into too much detail here—I wouldn’t want to reveal the mysteries to those not initiated—but our Latin Honor Society initiation this year was a success. Although only Emerson was properly in costume for the occasion, all of the officers had a great time presenting. Having passed through the depths of the ceremony, the underclass students emerged as full LHS members. It was a shame we couldn’t reach the same effects we could have in person, but it was still a great success and enjoyable for all involved." - Rex Certaminis Owen Grannis

MEDUSA MYTH EXAM

"The NJCL and Medusa exams are an annual opportunity for the Latin scholars who maybe don't have the lightningfast buzzer skills for Certamen or the artistic ability to otherwise participate in JCL competitions. As an all-around explorer who usually doesn't focus too much on one topic, I enjoy the straightforwardness of the preparation for each specific topic through Quizlets, the online practice exams, and (if I'm feeling particularly serious) primary sources. The online exams also worked fairly well from home this year because they were already administered digitally, and we were able to get a little communal preparation in the Monday lunch lectures, so it was nice to have the exams as a normal, mid-year JCL experience." - Anand Advani

"Overall I feel we had a fantastic season. I was less concerned with performance and placement this year, since the other reges and I wanted to mainly focus on increasing attendance and making the club more fun and open to new players. While it wasn't as fun to play without buzzers and without being in the same room, I think the fact that the Certamen season was all virtual this year encouraged a lot of new players to get involved, since the online tournaments were less of a time commitment than past tournaments. We had record-breaking participation in the advanced division this year, with as many as 27 players signing up for a single tournament. The online format also allowed for us to try new things, such as a new structure for in-house Certamen, which ended up being a big hit. All in all, we a great time running the Certamen club this year and are really proud of all our players for getting involved." - Rex Certaminis Thomas Donohue

NLE EXAM

Taking the tests online was definitely very different than normal. Usually we would take the NLE all together in the cafeteria and the CAV and NJCL tests together in the Latin rooms. We would be side-by-side with our friends while preparing for such challenging tests, and we would all create a closer bond because of that. But this year we all had to take them from our homes. I feel like we lost a bit of that closeness and camaraderie that comes with taking the tests. That being said, we did all join a Google Meet, so we could at least see each others’ faces. However, it was still very valuable to study and prepare for the tests and I definitely learned a lot of new, interesting things. - Dominus Telae Nidhish Lella

IDES OF MARCH

Click below to watch the presentation! (you won't regret it)

The video won NJCL Video of March!

Usually for the ides of march, TJ Latin students march around the halls of TJ chanting “beware the ides of march”, and at the end, senior LHS officers reenact Shakespeare's rendition of Caesar's assassination. Of course, we were unable to do that this year bc of COVID. we had to get creative, so we decided to have senior LHS officers reenact the traditional assassination we do in a typical year but in video format. It was a little challenging to plan out the video since everyone had to film separately, but overall, the process went very smoothly. I am really happy with how the video turned out, and I encourage you to watch the video! - Consul Jing Liu

ROME'S BIRTHDAY AP RIL 21, 2021

AD ASTRA PER ASPERA (KS) TO THE STARS THROUGH DIFFICULTIES

"Rome's birthday is one of our most iconic events. Latin students team up for a three legged race to recreate Aeneas, Ascanius, and Anchises' escape from Troy. The giant beanbag throwing contest remembers Turnus hurling a boulder at Aeneas and Roman ancestors. Sadly, we couldn't recreate the physical elements of the event online. But, we wanted to keep the team and competition aspects of Rome's birthday. So, we created a comedic PowerPoint about Romulus founding Rome and all of us sang a (chaotic) happy birthday to Rome in Latin. We finished with Roman Pictionary in small groups. Our singing and drawings certainly wouldn't have won any Convention awards, but seeing people laugh and hearing boisterous singing put a huge smile on my face. O Roma, felicem diem natalem tibi!" - Consul J.W. Strassberg

"In House this year was so fun! The Reges did an awesome job writing street rounds (seriously, they were so funny!), so even though we couldn't play in-person, the sense of camaraderie and casual fun was still there! They also did a great job making the different levels into one team, and in-house this year really channeled the sense of teamwork across grades and Latin levels that makes TJ Latin so wonderful." - Jenny Hunsinger

Certamen Booklet Questions

"This past year was a wonderful experience to watch certamen grow as we expand into the virtual setting. It was great- not only attending more certamina, but teaching it to the Latin 1s and 2s and watching them become stronger players. I look forward to convention and watching tj players dominate nationally for Virginia!" - Rex Certaminis Ryan Dwyer

Senior In-person Days "I was really thankful for the chance to come back in-person, even if it was only for two days—it was great to see all my teachers and friends again! being in latin class was especially nice because we’re all so familiar with each other that it almost felt like nothing had happened and it gave me a sense of latin community again (which was lacking a little this year with everything being online)" -Praetor Magna Kelly Mao

Context: TJ Admin surprised seniors who attended school virtually with the opportunity to attend the last two days of their high school careers inperson. It was great to see everyone and finally meet our teachers for one last time!

Although Ms. Conklin wasn't able to come in the building, her cardboard cutout was a popular photo spot for her seniors!

"This year, TJ Latin held its very first virtual iNite, telling the story of King Midas and his golden touch! This was no easy feat to put together in the time span of only two months. Act leaders Vyomika Gandhi and Miranda Xiong choreographed the act, filmed tutorials for other participants, and held practices over video call. Participants were required to film themselves dancing to the act at their own homes. Luckily, a few scenes with characters such as King Midas himself, were able to be filmed in-person at Green Spring Gardens. Special shoutout to Vyomika and Thomas for editing and compiling the final product, which received raving reviews from the press!" -Act leaders Miranda Xiong and Vyomika Gandhi

NJCL Club of the Month "The Latin 5 class at our school has designed the annual TJ Latin T-Shirt, and the AP Latin students are hard at work on the design for the annual AP Latin T-Shirt. TJ Latin students will be able to receive their t-shirts in the coming weeks. Also, our senior Latin Honor Society officers made a video to commemorate the Ides of March. Students viewed the video in their Latin classes on March 17th as there was no synchronous class on the 15th. TJ Latin also participated in the NJCL Civilization and NJCL Vocabulary exams which were administered this March. In addition, all TJ Latin students participated in the National Latin Exam on March 8th. On March 6, TJHSST held its 18th annual Certamen! TJ Latin students began the process of writing questions and organizing the event in early December. We had 18 schools in attendance this year! On March 17th, TJ Latin students participated in the Classical Association of Virginia (CAV) exam. In addition, on March 24th, guest speaker, Richard Campbell, gave a talk to TJ Latin students about the different aspects of the Roman military, using homemade props and demonstrations. "

We submitted to the NJCL COTM contest for March! At the time of this scrapbook's publication, results aren't out yet but here's what our wonderful praetores maximi Nicolo Koko and Abi Sastry said!
