Past Perfect It’s used to talk about an event that happened in the past before another event in the past
Simple Past It is used to talk about an event that happened in the past
Present Perfect It is used to talk about an event that has happened in an indefinite time . The tense is used to talk about an event that started in the past and which can be finished or is still continuing
Read the text : Serena moved to Berlin last year. Before she left for Berlin she had lived in Rome for 5 years. Now Serena is living in Berlin.
She loves Germany and Berlin. She has been in Berlin since last year Key questions:
When did she move to Berlin?
We know when the event happened so we use the Simple Past
How long had she lived in Italy before she went to Berlin?
We use the Past Perfect because we talk about an event that had happened before. First she lived in Rome, later she went to Berlin Where is she now? In Berlin. She has been there since last year We use the Present Perfect to talk about an event that started in the past and which is continuing in the present.

Simple Past You need to study the Irregular Verbs in English
Present Perfect Subject+ have/has+ past participle
