Editor’s Letter
THE GOOD AND BAD OF ONLINE COMMUNITIES My 10 year old Labrador took himself off for a walk last week (I was away so I think he gave up on anyone else taking him!) and was found hot and weary, looking very sorry for himself indeed. Within minutes, a good citizen had featured a “lost dog” post on our community Facebook group and he was safe. I’m a member of a Hythe community Facebook group and within minutes hundreds of people know about a local incident such as the fire on Hythe Pier and another at Hythe Garage when communities have the opportunity to pull together and rally round. These are just a few examples of the benefits of such communication online but it’s not always the case. I’ve removed myself from a group where members’ rants and offensive
remarks made me feel very uncomfortable. The anonymity I think means people say things they wouldn’t say in person or with reflection wouldn’t say at all. There are of course many people who avoid social media and buy a good old fashioned newspaper. These people also value local magazines like Discover Waterside (see page 2 for name change) to find local businesses who advertise and are at their service. The magazine is made possible by the investment of our local advertisers so please support them and say you found them in Discover! Like almost every business these days, Discover Magazines has an active Facebook page and the website is updated with What’s On events so feel free to follow us and post local activity and – please - always be nice!

The Life List
PROGRESSIVE PROVERBS Worldly wisdom may seem timeless, but sometimes our conclusions are out of date. For example, chickens can be counted before they’re hatched now - by using a UV light. And that’s not all that has changed... Nothing good ever came out of a windowed envelope. A broken clock is right twice a day, unless it’s digital. You automatically forget your number plate as soon as you reach the car park ticket machine. Toast falls butter side down on trousers. If you want to find something try looking for something else.
A watched pot is a poor use of a webcam. A text in time saves minutes on a pointless call. Look after the pennies...because they’re the only interest available on your savings. The squeaky wheel...will be on your supermarket trolley. Two wrongs...is about right. When in Rome, expect the ice cream to be both delicious and expensive. The pen is mightier than the broken pencil, but not as satisfying to chew. Keep your friends close...and your pretend friends on social media. You can’t judge a book by its cover, or trust the objectivity of its online reviews. Honesty is the best policy if you’ve got a bad memory. The grass is always greener on a TV gardening show. That’s because they’ve picked the perfect day to make you green with envy. A little knowledge is a web search waiting to happen.

HEALTH & EXERCISE Everyone has read articles or watched programmes on their Tv about the benefits of exercise and a healthy balanced diet. Exercise can take many forms, it’s not all red-faced sweaty people pumping iron or pounding the treadmill down the gym. There are many different things you can do to help keep you and your heart in good shape, and it needn’t hit you hard in the pocket. The secret to a lasting exercise regime is to first find something you like doing, you are far more likely to stick to if you enjoy it, it’s all too easy to go full steam ahead with an exercise programme that you don’t really like and that will increase the chances of you giving up.
is ‘everything in moderation’. By all means, have treats and takeaways, just remember in between those naughty moments try to eat a balanced diet consisting of the five food groups.
Of course, the exercise needs to be backed up with a sensible diet, nobody is saying only eat vegetables and salads all the time, but a good rule of thumb

And Another Thing...
TOM AND THE EXOTIC TRIP
by Tom Hughes
After yet another day at the coalface, it was time to plonk myself down in front of the tube with my standard issue tea and biccies. Eschewing Bradley Walsh’s faux hilarity, I flicked over to observe another presenter’s plummy commiserations with a pair of unlucky celebrities. “Alexander Armstrong has a way with people, don’t you think?” I glanced over at Sarah (My Dearly Beloved) who was busily ensconced in a pile of glossy magazines. Immediately, my blood froze. My wife was ‘browsing for ideas’, a catchall phrase that indicated she was on the hunt for a walletsqueezing Big Ticket Item. Without looking up Sarah said, “That’s right Tom, I’m choosing a last minute holiday. What are you doing with the remote?” “I’m trying to find Ceefax.” “Ceefax? Tom, in case you hadn’t noticed this isn’t 1994. I’ve heard Hurghada is nice.”
“And how would you know?” A change of subject being required, I made eye contact with a lady sporting an azure blue uniform. I plonked myself down and, fingering the reams of brochures, gasped, “Take me away from all of this madness.” Nonplussed, the woman turned to Sarah for help. “Ignore my husband, he is a child. We are after a week or ten day break. Don’t care where, as long as it’s hot.” “Europe, or further afield?” “Don’t mind.” “Well, we have some great deals at the moment for Vietnam.” I gripped Sarah’s arm. “Honey, I ain’t going back to Vietnam - you weren’t there man.” Another puzzled look. Sighing, Sarah pressed onwards. “How about Cancun? I hear it’s very nice.” “Yes, we have some excellent deals for Mexico.”
“Is that in Wales?” I asked hopefully.
“Do you do bed and breakfast?” A kick from Sarah.
And so the following morning we trundled down the precinct to the local travel agent. Once through the glass doors Sarah searched for a representative whilst I sniffed the air. “What’s that funny smell?”
“Bed and breakfast? In Mexico? No sir, it’s usually all-inclusive.”
“Coconut sunscreen. It’s to put you in the holiday mood.” “It smells like a massage parlour.” 18
“Which means?” “Everything is pre-paid, so all your food and drink is included. And your entertainment. Now this resort I can vouch for, I went last year. I had such a laugh - the barman was pouring us shots all night and then we saw a fantastic Rod Stewart.”
Without so much as a glance in the direction of yours truly, Sarah, in an exasperated tone, said, “No, that won’t be suitable.”
Sarah intervened. “Look, this is getting us nowhere. We just want somewhere warm, inexpensive and easy to get to.”
Undeterred, our azure blue travel counsellor whisked us away to another equally exotic continent - we were about to embark upon an imaginary trip to the Nile Delta. “Now, what about Egypt?”
Seizing my opportunity I announced, “Well why didn’t you say darling? Come with me!”
My mind raced to a balmy evening standing awestruck in the Valley of the Kings. “And this resort is also all-inclusive - so you get your breakfast, dinner and evening meal all from the same place. And the compound is fully secure with armed guards on all the gates.” “That sounds just like the place where Uncle Billy spent that fortnight.” “Where was that, sir? Hurghada?” “No, Strangeways. He’d refused to pay his council tax.”
Two days later we were packed and ready to go. The hand luggage safely in the boot of the Mondeo, a less than impressed Sarah sat sulking in the passenger seat. “Look, it’s inexpensive, easy to get to, by the sea and warm - it’s the Gulf Stream you see.” “Yes Tom, but I was hoping we’d be in the actual Gulf.” “Well we are nearer - well a bit nearer anyway. Come on, get in. Llandudno here we come! I can’t wait to get up the Great Orme, can you? “Tom, you know how to treat a girl, don’t you?” And off we set - what bliss! Gwyliau yn hapus!

Beauty
HOLIDAY BEAUTY
By Kate Duggan
Have you packed for your summer holiday yet? You might want to find room in your case for one of these beauty treats… I have a confession. I am just a little bit addicted to travel sets. I love trying new products, and the miniature sizes make me feel like Alice in Wonderland. So it’s fair to say that when the Neal’s Yard Remedies new skincare sets arrived at my door I got rather excited. And I wasn’t disappointed when I tried them out. There are five sets available, including the Award Winning set, which includes Wild Rose Beauty Balm, White Tea Facial Mist, Beauty Sleep Concentrate and White Tea Facial Mask. Each treat is the perfect size for a few days away, and they all smell amazing. The facial mist is lovely and refreshing, and the balm is perfect for soothing chapped lips, travel weary feet and dry skin. Sets cost from £20, www.nealsyardremedies.com.

If you’re not lucky enough to be jetting off to the Caribbean for a two week spa break, you can at least treat yourself to an at-home spa experience. Janjira’s latest Therapy Massage Grapefruit and Tangerine candle smells amazing – think cocktails on a balmy summer’s evening in the tropics. It’s made with natural ingredients, such as coconut oil. As it melts you can use it as a massage oil, or just a body oil if you don’t have a willing masseuse to hand. Divine. £32, from www.janjira.co.uk. If you’re looking for a styling product to give your wavy hair a lift, try Philip Mitchell’s Awapuhi Wild Ginger Texturizing Sea Spray. Spray a light mist over damp hair, scrunch your hair slightly with a towel or curl up into a bun, and dry off with a hairdryer or leave to air dry. Easy. It
gives curls and waves a bit more oomph and adds volume and bounce to fine, lifeless locks. Unlike others on the market, it doesn’t leave hair feeling ‘crunchy’, stiff or sticky. From £7.25, www.paulmitchell.co.uk. When you’re used to an electric toothbrush, a manual one just doesn’t cut it for holidays. Enter the Sonic Chic Urban Portable Toothbrush. It comes with its own cap to keep the brush clean, and is battery powered so there’s no need to pack a charger. There are several designs to choose between, from vintage kitsch to tribal patterns. The Sonic Chic Urban Portable Toothbrush is available from Boots for £19.99, which includes two heads and a battery.

I’m sure you’re well aware of the importance of wearing sun tan lotion. Unfortunately for us sensitive types, protecting against skin cancer can mean putting up with extra irritation. Odylique’s Natural Sun Screen SPF30 doesn’t contain any artificial preservatives, colours, fragrances or sun filters, so it’s less likely to irritate skin. At £25 for a full size tube it’s not cheap, but it’s got to be one of the best natural sunscreens available. It’s easy to massage in, doesn’t leave a white residue, and is packed with nourishing ingredients such as shea butter and chamomile to leave skin feeling pampered.

SUMMER OF FUN From family-friendly festivals to wet weather fun, we’ve plenty of ideas to keep the kids entertained this summer. Back to nature Fly a kite, go geocaching, build a den, explore a new trail – you don’t have to travel far or spend a lot of money to have fun outdoors. If you need some inspiration, try The National Trust’s 50 things to do before you’re 11 ¾ list, which is available as a free app, a printed leaflet, or a PDF. The app is particularly appealing for tech-savvy kids, as it lets them record their activities and earn printable certificates. Activities range from bug hunting and playing pooh sticks to canoeing, rock climbing and orienteering. Festivals Festival season isn’t just for the grown-ups – there are plenty of family-friendly festivals to choose from, including: • Suffolk’s Latitude Festival has its own family campsite and kids’ area. Children can enjoy a whole host of activities, from pizza making to 26
weird science. There are live shows for children of all ages, a kids’ disco, and plenty of music to dance along to. • At Camp Bestival children can learn circus tricks, be entertained by Mister Maker, Mr Tumble and Dick & Dom, jump on the world’s biggest bouncy castle, and lots more. • Cheshire’s Just So festival is specifically aimed at children and offers a ‘magical experience where art, music and literature are embedded and entwined in a beautiful and wondrous landscape.’ There’s everything from baby yoga and storytelling to dance workshops, live shows and a jelly fight! • Chagstock is rather smaller than Latitude or Bestival, but offers great value for money. An adult weekend ticket is £90, including camping, and under-12s go free. There’s a family camping area, play area, bouncy castle and various activities.
Learning through play The summer holidays are not the time to worry about spelling tests and practice papers. However, that doesn’t mean that your child can’t have fun learning a new skill, whether it’s sewing, baking or climbing trees. Many children struggle with learning how to tell the time. If yours is one of them, a Twistiti watch might help them master that particular skill this summer. Hours and minutes are brightly coloured and easy to read. There are also lots of interchangeable straps to choose from, including camouflage, animal print and stripes. Our eight year old tester said the watch made it much easier for her to work out the time, see www.twistiti.com.

Wet days at home The British weather being what it is, there are likely to be some rainy days this summer. It can help to have some plans up your sleeve, so here are a few ideas: • Build a den inside. A couple of chairs or a table, a few old sheets or blankets, and a washing line with pegs are all you need. Use the den for family board games, picnics and teddy bear tea parties. • Have a treasure hunt, with a series of clues, or a scavenger hunt to find mini prizes or chocolate coins. • Make some puppets out of old socks, cardboard boxes or wooden spoons; write a play and put on a performance for other members of the family. • If you just can’t tear them away from their screens, have a pyjama party. Add pizza, popcorn and playmates and you should be able to hide out in another room for at least an hour’s peace and quiet. By Kate Duggan

The Gruffalo's Child © Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler 2004 - Macmillan Children's Books
THE GRUFFALO AND FRIENDS ARRIVE AT MOTTISFONT Colourful, characterful works by the much-loved children’s illustrator Axel Scheffler will be on display at the National Trust’s Mottisfont over the summer until 3 September.
Axel Scheffler has been creating imaginative illustrations for more than 30 years, and is perhaps
best-known for his collaborations with Julia Donaldson, including the modern classics The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo’s Child.
Mottisfont’s exhibition will be very familyfocused. The gallery will be laid out to suit younger audiences, with lower-hanging pictures, a childfriendly guide and cosy reading spaces dotted throughout. It will be an immersive experience, with large, scene-setting vinyls and other decorations taken from Scheffler’s illustrations, alongside more traditionally hung artworks. Quotes from the books will also decorate the walls. A family activity trail, based around Mottisfont’s grounds, will run alongside the exhibition, with a craft activity to take home. As with the gallery, different areas of the gardens will be ‘themed’ for different stories and characters.

THE GREAT BRICK SAFARI: AN INTERACTIVE EXPERIENCE Marwell Wildlife is to become the first UK zoo to host a collection of giant LEGO brick animals. This summer over 80 sculptures, representing 25 different species, will be installed at the Hampshire attraction, offering an exciting and unique trail to connect children with nature. Gardening
IT’S NOT ALWAYS GOOD TO BE GREEN Water features are great in a garden but the chances are that from time to time you will have been frustrated by the water turning green. Generally, this will be due to one of many different types of algae infestation, and will get worse during warmer weather, but what should you do about it? Blanket weed is long filaments of tangled algae, making a mass resembling a dense green blanket. Remove by pulling, raking or by using a stick or bamboo cane that you twirl into the algae, then compost it down in your compost bin.
Surface floating pond weeds such as duckweed, which looks like lots of very tiny oval leaves floating on the water’s surface, can be a real nightmare too. It builds up very rapidly as a bright green surface layer and the best control is to regularly scrape the weed off using a good-sized kitchen sieve. Again it can be composted, but make sure you remove all of it or it will soon be back. Try to avoid the build-up of algae by creating your pond carefully and taking precautions with 34
what you grow and keep in it. Avoid a very sunny position, as lots of sunlight increases the algal growth. Bear in mind, however, that a pond close to trees will become clogged by leaves in autumn! Make sure that the pond is as deep as possible, as algal growth is much more likely in shallow water, and avoid putting in too many fish as their excreta raises the water’s nitrogen level, which encourages algae. Surface floating plants, particularly water lilies, will help to shade the water’s surface - ideal if the pond is in a fairly sunny site.
You should also include a selection of oxygenating plants, available from your local garden centre or pond plant supplier. Some of these float in bundles in the water, others can be grown in containers, and all of them help raise the oxygen level in the pond and so decrease the algae problem. A spout or fountain will also oxygenate the water, but note that water lilies do not like water that is in motion. Note that if you keep changing the water in an attempt to keep it clear, the pond never gets the chances to create its own natural balance and the situation will not improve. Be patient and usually, provided you try all the above, the pond will eventually sort itself out and clear water will return.
You can use proprietary physical and chemical controls for algae, but make sure that whatever you choose is suitable and can be used safely around wildlife and your pond fish. Using barley straw to clear algae in ponds does work, but it is essential that the straw is from barley and no other cereal crop. If you can get hold of this, cram some into an old pair of tights and submerge in the water by weighing them down with several bricks. Alternatively, buy pads of barley straw (sometimes mixed with lavender stalks), and these will help do the job for you. USE YOUR IMAGINATION British Adder snake
There are many attractions in the area which will come to mind when planning what to do during the summer. However some need a little more thought, especially if you are watching your budget. All these are low cost or free days out. Imagine you are a millionaire: Northington Grange is the foremost example of the Greek Revival style in England, built between 1804 and 1809. It is free, and a great place for imagining yourself as Lord or Lady of the Manor. This is a lovely picnic spot too. www.englishheritage.co.uk and search for Northington. Imagine you are an art critic: The grounds of Hillier Gardens (near Romsey) make an interesting walk at any time of the year, but in the summer they have an annual exhibition of Art in the Garden. www.hilliergardens.org.uk Imagine you are a child: With a signal box and station, track running through tunnels, over and under bridges, round curves and changing gradients, the miniature railway provides a fun ride for children and adults. Eastleigh Lakeside Railway, Royal Victoria Country Park, Moors Valley Railway, Exbury Gardens Railway and Bankside Miniature Railway. Imagine you are a wildlife expert: Enjoy a date with nature at the Reptile Centre, 38
with fun activities for the whole family. Quiz trail and ‘making’ activities for children. Come and see the ‘live’ video of birds on their nests as well as the reptiles and amphibians. For more information 0300 067 4601. There is no charge for this event. Just turn up between 10.30am and 4pm. New Forest Reptile Centre, SO43 7GR Wed 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 Aug. www.forestry.gov.uk and search for the centre For more nature trails look no further than the Wildlife and Butterfly Walk at Southampton Common. Learn about all the species of butterflies and moths that are in the UK. The walks start just inside the main gates at the end of Cemetery Road where parking is available. The walks and events are all free but any donations would be much appreciated. Bookings - 07538 888 655. Imagine you are on holiday: The land in the New Forest is quite unlike anywhere else in the county and once you are in there it feels like you are on holiday. You can take a long walk or to see more take bikes with you. Take a picnic and drinking water. Imagine you are a golf professional: If you’ve never played the game and wouldn’t dream of going onto a main course you can still have the chance to swing a club. Go down to the mini golf at Andrews East Park, Southampton, it is around £2.50 per person and it is an 18 hole course. For more information call 02380 833000.

RENOVATED MEDIEVAL CARGO SHIP UNVEILED
A piece of Southampton’s history that has been restored to its former glory and was unveiled by the Mayor of Southampton, Councillor Les Harris. The restoration project on the replica medieval cargo ship located on Western Esplanade was conducted by apprentices and students from City College Southampton’s specialist Marine Skills Centre, under the supervision of Learning Manager and expert boat builder Darren Patten.
Mayor of Southampton Councillor Les Harris and the team behind the restoration.
The 10-metre cargo ship is a replica of a 14th century medieval trading ship known as a KEEL, a clinker-built boat, based on Viking shipbuilding techniques and thought to be the type used to take wool to Calais, then bring wine back from Bordeaux.
Over the years the ship has deteriorated and Southampton City Council recognised it was time for the ship to be restored, to give visitors to the city a taste of its maritime history. Councillor Simon Letts, Leader of Southampton City Council, commented: “It’s great to see the medieval ship restored back to its former glory.
This iconic feature was made around twenty years ago by a former manager of the Marine Skills Centre and is an important feature of Southampton’s history.
Andy Collyer, Westquay’s General Manager, commented: “We are pleased to have supported the local community and students on the regeneration of a Southampton landmark.”

PADDLEBOARDING IN A PICANTO To prove just how practical its new city car can be, Kia challenged James Baggott to tackle the Italian coast on a paddleboard. It’s all too easy to pigeonhole cars like the Kia Picanto as city centre shopping carts, fit for nothing more than a quick trip to the supermarket. While it might be true that the Korean car firm’s baby has traditionally been bought by grandparents and students, it’s an image the brand is desperately hoping it can shed. This is the third generation of Kia’s second bestselling UK car and with it comes more aggressive looks, a sharper driving style and clever technology aimed at helping it appeal to a far broader spectrum of buyers.
That’s why I find myself on a paddle-boarding adventure in Italy: to prove the new Picanto’s versatility, Kia has invited us to the Toscana coastline, crammed two blow-up paddleboards, wet suits and a picnic in the back of one of their latest city cars and pointed us towards the coast. Costing from just £9,450, the Picanto now boasts more passenger and luggage space but with no overall increase in size over the previous model. Inside there’s a 25 per cent increase in luggage space, topping 255 litres with the rear seats up and 1,010 litres with them down.
That extra carrying capacity certainly comes in handy. The two giant paddleboards, overnight bags for two and accessories are easily swallowed in the boot, with space left over. There’s a choice of engines in the new model. Our test vehicle – in ‘2’ specification – features the 1.0 litre 66bhp unit. But there’s also a 1.25 litre 83bhp option and a 1.0 litre turbocharged option. Even the lowest output unit gets the city car to 60mph in 13.8 seconds and gives a top speed of 100mph, 42
while sipping fuel at a miserly 64.2mpg rate on the combined cycle. Crossing the rich, lush green vine-covered Italian countryside near Grosseto as we attempt to find the beach, the Picanto’s light steering and peppy engine impresses, as does its ability to soak up potholes you’d fear would otherwise swallow it. As we approach the beach, the asphalt crumbles away and the Picanto skips between giant holes littering the sand-covered track to the water. After an hour’s paddleboarding followed by some impromptu surfing, there’s time to play with the kit while drying off in the supportive front seats of the Kia. It’s functional not flashy inside, and despite the smaller screen for the multimedia system on this mid-range ‘2’, it still works well with your phone, streaming Spotify perfectly. There’s air conditioning, electric front and rear windows, heated door mirrors and a leather trimmed steering wheel; that’s on top of the standard options, which include remote central locking, USB and AUX ports, electronic stability control and automatic emergency braking.
Kia has certainly moved its Picanto on in leaps and bounds from its predecessor. On the road it’s sharper to drive, quieter and more sporty than ever before. Its new technology – which on higher specification models even includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – is impressive, while it’s a comfortable car to spend time in. What’s more, it’s always satisfying to know that even though it’s a car unlikely to shed that blue rinse stereotype, if you are a more adventurous owner it can cope admirably with all the kit you’ll need to escape city life. IF IT APPRECIATES, BUY IT; IF IT DEPRECIATES, LEASE IT Those wise words were said by oil tycoon John Paul Getty: a man who knew something about looking after money. And he’s right. Especially when it comes to cars. If you have half-million plus to buy a Ferrari Dino 246 GTS then, I say, you are wise to make that purchase. For next year you might make £100,000 when you sell it. But if you only have £10,000 to buy a Fiat 500 then I reckon, fun car as it is (I’ve got one), you are mad. Two cars from the same company at polar opposites on the pay-scale, but I advise you to buy the expensive one. For the 500, and any other mass-market car, I advise leasing every time. Manufacturers and dealers are desperate to shift cars so deals on new ones are phenomenal. When I bought the aforementioned 500 for my daughters,
Pitched Roofs Flat Roofs Lead Work Velux Skylight Installation Gutter Replacement/Cleaning Chimney Repair/Removal Roof Cleaning Services

after the “deposit contribution”, the service package, the low RFL fee and the Fiat-backed lease deal were factored in the monthly payments were cheaper than if I had bought a two year old model with 20,000 miles on the clock. Plus I’ve an extra two years before the MOT is due. You get no discounts for cash either. Dealers sell the finance options because they get commission and the repayment risk is passed to the finance firm. A win-win for them. So, keep your money in the bank instead of watching it drain away on what you spend on that car. Mr Getty was right. Collectable cars go up in value, so buy, buy, buy. THE ART OF DISPLAY If you want to create displays of your treasured possessions that show them off, our top ten tips will help. 1. Consider what you are displaying, whether it is sturdy or fragile, valuable or everyday. Do you wish to admire it from afar or do you prefer it close to hand and perhaps picked up? You may find you can manage with a display on a mantelpiece, shelf or table top, or you can invest in a specially designed cabinet, case or stand. If you opt for specialist display furniture, choose pieces that complement the style and proportions of your home. 2. Good lighting makes all the difference. Carefully positioned ceiling-mounted spotlights are ideal, but an adjustable lamp may provide a more informal, cheaper fix for a simple domestic display. Think about where the light comes from: directly above, behind (for a dramatic silhouette) or from the front, and how ‘warm’ or ‘cool’ the bulb should be in order to enhance colour and texture. 3. Group objects together and they can be much more than the sum of their parts. A group display may consist of almost anything: a series of Delftware plates or tiles, a dozen framed silk headscarves, pebbles in graduating sizes, mirrored baubles, wooden shoe lasts, a row of modern chairs in sorbet shades…you can have great fun with almost anything you decide to gather together. 4. Displays of identical pairs of objects are probably the most simple, and often the most 46
Image Above: Ebony glazed display cabinet, £668.25, Alexander & Pearl: 020 8508 0411; www.alexanderandpearl.co.uk
visually powerful, of all. There’s something extremely pleasing about this mirroring and doubling, but you must ensure your objects are placed evenly and symmetrically. 5. When choosing a group of different objects to display, look for ways in which they will work together, whether by colour, size, shape, texture or proportion. It is important to have something that creates coherence and some objects may simply not fit well into the group. 6. Every time you display more than one object, you need to opt for symmetry or asymmetry. Symmetrical displays tend to appear more classical, considered and refined, and suit traditional rooms. Asymmetry, however, is ideal for making an impact in a contemporary space, and can seem more spontaneous and intuitive.

7. A great way to make an impact with a display is by showing off a single, fabulous, huge object - but ensure there is plenty of space around it in which it can ‘breathe’.
Complete paCkage for only £420 3 section spring assisted ladder, electric light and 120sq ft of loft flooring. All fitted and inc of VAT. Covering Dorset & Hampshire

8. Small objects can look lost in most rooms, so be particularly careful about how you display them. Try to ‘frame’ them within their surroundings – maybe in a cabinet or niche, on a side table, or on a plinth rather than a long, wide shelf. 9. If displaying large groups of paintings, prints or flat objects on a wall, start by laying your potential group on the floor. Choose the piece that you wish to be most prominent, then surround it with pieces that work well alongside it. 10. Finally, stand right back - does your display need tweaking? Don’t be afraid to change things around, and try not to make the finished result overly formal or perfect. This is your home, not a gallery, and the important thing is that you love what’s around you. By Katherine Sorrell 47
BABIES ISSUED WITH LIBRARY CARDS
Parents are signing up their babies to their local library at the same time as registering their births, as part of a new Hampshire County Council initiative. In the past year, 1,267 new arrivals have received their very own cards from Hampshire Library Service after visiting Hampshire Registration Service. The voluntary scheme has seen around 20% of all babies registered in Hampshire join the service since May 2016. Councillor Andrew Gibson, Executive Member for Culture, Recreation and Countryside, said: “This is a wonderful initiative with our Registration Service to help place our libraries at the heart of family life. It’s never too early to start enjoying books with your little one – introducing skills like listening and identifying shapes and colours before they can read.” For more details, and to join your local library, visit hants.gov.uk/librariesandarchives/library/jointhelibrary Image: Baby Jennifer with parents Jane and Stephen Baker and her library card.

BEWARE OF TICKS WHEN WALKING YOUR DOG Ticks pose a serious health risk to your dog during the summer and early autumn months, particularly if you take them for walks through bracken and heather. If your dog has a long coat, a tick will barely be noticeable on the skin, so it’s important that you physically check their body when you finish your walk. What does a tick look like? Ticks are tiny spider-like creatures that attach themselves to a ‘host,’ and feed on their blood. Once they start to feed, the tick increases in size and becomes more noticeable to the human eye. Although it’s tempting to pull a tick from your dog, part of it is likely to remain under their skin which can have serious health consequences in the months that follow. You can buy a dedicated tick remover from your local pet shop or veterinary practice. Although other methods of removing ticks exist, tick removers allow you to twist and pull the tick from your dog, bringing the entire body away. Why are ticks dangerous to your pet? Ticks cause Lyme disease, or Lyme borreliosis, in dogs, but signs of illness don’t commonly appear until several months after they have been bitten. Symptoms include: • High fever. • Loss of appetite. • Swelling of the joints. • Swollen lymph nodes. • Lethargy. Once diagnosed, a prolonged course of antibiotics can be used to fight the infection, but some dogs may continue to experience recurring symptoms throughout their life. 52
