New team member, New Features! Having recently joined the Discover Magazines I’ve had the pleasure of working with a brilliantly gifted team of women who have taken this “ex-pat from Cyprus” under their wing through what I can only describe as a truly hospitable welcome. Melanie’s away so asked me to stand in as guest editor. With my background in music and events I really wanted to extend the “What’s on Guide” (Page 44). Discover Southampton wants to support local venues, big and small alike. We’ve teamed up with the Mayflower for our first of many competitions starting with two tickets to Riverdance (see opposite) and the What’s On Listings include my favourite place, The Brook. Another passion of mine is food and drink and I’m sure I’m not alone so I’ve written a short restaurant review; “Tastes & Flavours of

Southampton” (Page 8). It’s an unbiased look at new and already popular restaurants that have impressed me with their concepts, taste and general dining experience. If you’re a local restaurant and want to be included in our next issue, then get in touch, we don’t bite! With the worst of winter behind us (fingers crossed) we’re driving home with that last bit of sunshine in our rearview mirror, which can only mean one thing; it’s time for a Spring clean! So, for inspiration turn over to pages 14-15 or start with the kid’s room (page 16-17). Before putting on your marigolds, our article on Eco cleaning products is worth a read (page 9). “Discover Your Local Southampton” is a new section dedicated to local stories ranging from a bid to save the Rank Hovis building from demolition to the news that Southampton kids are amongst the healthiest (Page 25)! Easy Eco by Kate Duggan

Trying to do your bit for the planet? Switching to eco-friendly toiletries is an easy place to start…

There are plenty of planet-friendly beauty brands to choose from these days, but that certainly wasn’t the case when Weleda launched back in 1921. The brand’s original focus on helping the body to heal itself with plants still holds true today. Ethics are firmly embedded throughout the company. Growers receive a fair wage, all products are at least vegetarian and Weleda’s buildings are powered with renewable energy. Weleda also believes in giving back so supports a range of initiatives, from wellness retreats for cancer patients to wildflower planting schemes. Hero products include its multi-award winning Skin Food and the gorgeously scented Wild Rose range. See www.weleda.co.uk. British brand Neal’s Yard Remedies (www.nealsyardremedies.com) has been making and selling sustainable skin and hair care products for almost forty years. Ingredients are organic where possible and all are sustainably sourced. Its factory runs on renewable energy, including from its own solar panels. The company helped to get plastic microbeads banned from cosmetic products. It’s funded the protection of more than one million square metres of tropical forests and the Bee Lovely range raises money for bee-friendly charities. The brand is aiming to have protected fifty million bees by the end of this year. è

9

Eco-cleaning brand Splosh also sells hand wash and shower gel. You get bottles with your first order and refill pouches from then on. The refills are super-concentrated – you pour a small amount of the gel into an empty bottle and top it up with water. Once you have eight empty pouches, you can post them back to Splosh for free to be recycled. It’s a great way to save plastic if you prefer liquid wash to bars of soap. As well as saving plastic, you’ll also save money as the refills work out a good bit cheaper than leading eco brands. (They also perform a lot better in my opinion.) All Splosh products are cruelty-free, vegan-friendly and designed to be gentle to the environment. See www.splosh.com.

Green People (www.greenpeople.co.uk) mainly uses organic ingredients, has never tested on animals and will plant a tree for every order over £40 in 2020. All packaging can be recycled, but the company is planning to move all of its products to renewable sugar cane packaging over the next couple of years. The brand donates 10% of its net profit to charity; previous recipients include the Marine Conservation Society and a children’s hospice. Try the award-winning Vita Min Fix 24 Hour Cream, which is packed with nourishing plant and seed oils that your skin will lap up. One of the easiest ways to buy sustainable toiletries and cosmetics is to head to a shop or website that specialises in them. Holland and Barratt is a good choice if you want a high street shopping experience, or try ww.lovelula.com, www.biggreensmile.co.uk, www.naturisimo.com or www.ethicalsuperstore.com.

Namib Desert West of the Kalahari and the Great Escarpment, the Namib stretches 1,500 km along Namibia’s Atlantic coast and 80 to 160 km inland. This is the oldest desert in the world (some say over 55 million years old), an ‘open space’ that gave its name to Namibia. It’s nature in the raw, a mythical land claiming some of the highest dunes on the planet and laced with river beds, briefly flooded every five or six years but usually bone dry. Hot and arid, it may seem a desolate place, yet about a hundred days a year the ocean fog drifts in, bringing life-giving moisture to a few acacia trees. Plants pop up here and there: spiky melon, dollar bush – so called for its shape – and the resilient mirabilis with just two very long leaves, which can live for

12

over 2,000 years. Fauna includes small geckos and lizards, white ants found nowhere else on earth, rodents, a few springbok and the amazing desert elephants able to survive four to five days without water. Equally welladapted is the beautiful Oryx gazelle, often wandering on its own with long straight horns silhouetted against sand and sky. In the Namib-Naukluft National Park, the ‘Sea of Sand’ is a world heritage site and for nature lovers the most spectacular attraction, just beyond the dramatic canyon of Sesriem. The park opens in time for sunrise and as you start the 60 km drive across the legendary Sossusvlei area the desert takes your breath away, dazzling colours from orange and gold to red and pink, spooky shadows, blinding light and clumps of wild sage glowing luminous green. Crowds climb up the iconic Dune 45, seen on every postcard but close to the tarmac and a mere 170 metres high. Number 45 refers to the distance from the park’s entrance, but for real adventurers it all begins at the end of the road.

First it’s a 4x4 safari ride, 5 km or so bouncing on a track, then shuffling through the sand to the base of ‘Big Daddy’, the highest dune in the area beckoning at a whopping 325 metres. Ready to climb? Not easy as you crawl up the narrow ridge, no track, only footprints ahead of you, shifting precariously as you attempt to anchor your heels. It’s blazing hot but the views are gorgeous all along the crest, even if you don’t get to the top. For without the slightest warning, a mighty sandstorm might arise, forcing you to slide down to safety as fast as you can on the steepest side. You land in the Deadvlei, a long-dried up marsh now a white clay pan, dotted with the skeletons of camelthorn trees, dead for hundreds of years, never decomposed but scorched by the sun. Yet just as awesome are the mighty dunes rolling along the Skeleton Coast, scattered with shipwrecks and mostly inaccessible – though wonderful views can be enjoyed on a propeller flight, skimming right across the desert in a vast surreal landscape of everchanging shapes and colours.

Neat and attractive storage for cleaning products. Shelves contain laundry and utility range from gardentrading.co.uk.

It’s Time To Give Your Home A Spring Clean

As the sun comes out, temperatures warm up and the days get longer, there’s nothing nicer than a thorough spruce up around the house, making sure that everything is squeaky clean from top to toe.

ç Set of two jute and cotton baskets, £12; grey laundry powder tin, £10; microfibre kitchen sponges, £1.50 each; rush natural storage basket, £18; grey and bamboo dish drainer, £10; Sorbo wooden dish brush, £1; all dunelm.com.

é Knitted dishcloths are a great alternative to single-use kitchen towels. Set of three cloths, £13, andliving.co.uk. 14

GET FRESH INSIDE AND OUT • Start with a general clear out. Just tackle one room at a time, and get organised in advance with some boxes and bags, so that you can designate things quickly and easily as rubbish, recycling, charity shop, to sell, and so on. • Gather your tools – brooms, scrubbing brushes, buckets and cloths – and cleaning products. You could make your own natural cleaners using online ‘recipes’. To clean mirrors and windows, for example, scrunched-up newspaper and white vinegar will give them a wonderful sparkle. • Bear in mind the basic principles: work from top to bottom (dust the light fitting before polishing the table beneath) and tackle dry before wet (vacuum before mopping). Put some music on and really throw yourself into it.

é Rug beater, £14, gardentrading.co.uk.

• Now is a good time to sort out those less frequently required jobs such as steam-cleaning the carpets or having the chimney swept. And how about washing down your front door, shampooing your rugs and taking your duvets to the launderette? • To finish, add some glorious scent. Reed diffusers filled with essential oils or natural-wax candles make an longer lasting alternative to fresh flowers.

é Sonchus 80cm cabinet liner, £9, GoodHome Kitchens, at diy.com.

é Make your own cleaning products using online ‘recipes’ and pour into spray bottles. Method multipurpose cleaner, £3; Hydrea nail brush, £2; Elements glass canister medium, £8; all dunelm.com.

é Dustpan and brush set, £14, gardentrading.co.uk. 15

How to keep toys tidy

When blocks, balls, cars and cuddly toys are strewn everywhere, you know it’s time to reassess your children’s storage. Fortunately, there are plenty of goodlooking and convenient ways to help your little ones to keep their room clear.

Peg boards are tremendously useful, and these examples come in a range of sizes and contemporary colours (and accessories are included). The 100 pegboard in blush, £160, pegandboard.com 16

STASH AWAY THEIR STUFF • Ensure that your little ones can reach everything they need all by themselves. Set hooks, racks and shelves at a suitable height, and look for adaptable shelving that can not only allow for different uses, but also be raised as your youngsters get taller.

é Beach House cabin bed, £2,325, cuckooland.com

ç Oeuf toy store, £390, bobbyrabbit.co.uk

Industrial locker storage bench in Hertog Grey, £239, cuckooland.com è

• Make the most of wall space, and employ a combination of shelves (standard, shallow, floating, corner and so on), hooks and rails, as well as peg boards – and maybe even magnetic strips (great for storing small metal toy cars). • Large baskets, buckets and crates (perhaps some on wheels) set on the floor are great solution – they can be colour-coded and possibly even stacked, and everything can be chucked into them quickly and easily. Hand-held caddies are good for smaller items, while a fabric organiser with pockets can be hung from a wall or the back of a door and used for anything from slippers to dolls and teddies. • On a practical note, it’s important that drawers are easy to open, but with stops that prevent them from sliding right out if pulled hard. Labelling shelves and drawers (use pictures if necessary) helps everyone to know where to put things away.

National Half Service? By Dr Daisy Mae

From 1st April 2019, the NHS stopped funding a range of treatments it regards as ineffective, possibly harmful and poor value for money. Moles (benign), simple cysts, warts, verrucas and varicose veins – to name but a few – are all on the list of treatments no longer covered. Now, however unsightly, embarrassing or irritating, the NHS is no longer responsible. Cash-strapped, and hard-pressed, the NHS is continually struggling to maintain an excellent quality of service and to balance the books. Consequently, management teams are regularly analysing the numbers and type of medical procedures, their success and complication rates and considering whether these interventions offer value for money. How and Who Decides? On behalf of the NHS, The National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) is a robust body that reviews all the available medical evidence about NHS treatments and interventions. By law, if NICE recommends it, the NHS must provide it, but otherwise the NHS has no obligation. Inappropriate Interventions NICE has concluded some treatments are not effective and may even be harmful. For example, surgery to improve snoring carries risks: bleeding, infection, voice changes and swallowing problems. The cure rate from surgery is only 46%. Yet losing weight and stopping smoking is just as effective. A Bitter Response Nobody wants any harm, risk or wasteful spending, but are we being hoodwinked? What can a parent now do for a child with glue ear or tonisillitis? Doctors themselves are concerned. In a recent BMA survey, 75% of doctors said they believed that financial targets were overriding patient care. The Negative Consequences These conditions may be benign, but they still cause 18

misery and this negatively affects our well-being, self-esteem and self-confidence. Other treatments may be effective, but these can be expensive and hard to access. Vulnerable people who can’t speak up for themselves or engage fully in their own care may suffer. Some patients may choose not to consult the doctor, and serious diagnoses may be missed. Lifestyle interventions such as weight loss are beneficial for numerous medical conditions. However, weight loss is difficult and takes time. The Royal College of Physicians has recently declared obesity a disease, not just a lifestyle factor.

Has the ‘National Half Service’ really got this right? The 17 inappropriate interventions no longer funded by the NHS • Snoring surgery • Dilatation and Curettage (D&C) for heavy menstrual bleeding • Knee arthroscopy for osteoarthritis • Breast reduction • Removal of benign skin conditions • Grommets for glue ear in children • Tonsillectomy for recurrent tonsillitis • Haemorrhoid surgery • Hysterectomy for heavy menstrual bleeding • Chalazia removal • Arthroscopic shoulder decompression for shoulder pain • Carpal tunnel release • Dupuytren’s contracture release • Ganglion excision • Trigger finger release • Varicose vein surgery Full article available on www.discovermagazines.co.uk

These Are The Cars To Look Out For In 2020 We take a look at the most exciting cars by class due to arrive this year… As attention continues to be focused squarely on electrification, autonomy and tech-heavy cars, there’s a lot of fresh metal arriving on the market. Here, we take a look at the cars in each class that have us most intrigued.

Pick-up Jeep Gladiator Essentially a five-seater pickup version of the Wrangler, it’s expected that the Gladiator will factor into Jeep’s European strategy during 2020.

20

MPV Mercedes EQV Moving forward from the EQC SUV, the EQV is an electric van, likely to be one of a number of electrified Mercedes vehicles due to arrive in 2020.

Hatchback Volkswagen Golf Mk8 The MK8 comes to market with a fresh new look and more interior tech. There’s a cleaner, more efficient range of engines, too. Though we’ve yet to see it in full, expect a go-faster GTI to arrive in 2020 as well.

Performance Car Audi RS6 The new RS6 is more powerful than before while being sharper and more engaging to drive. It’s no less practical, however, and it looks great.

Crossover Ford Puma This funky-looking machine packs some clever technology under its skin. Mild-hybrid powertrains feature in a bid to improve efficiency, while a ‘MegaBox’ compartment in the boot is on hand to maximise practicality.

SUV Land Rover Defender The Defender will have a variety of specifications and wheelbase choices, as well as engines. There’s going to be a hybrid version too – so there’s an option for those people who want the cleanest version of the Defender available.

Estate Skoda Superb iV Building on the supremely practical Czech estate, this has a 1.4-litre petrol engine linked up to an 85kW motor, allowing for a claimed electric-only range of 34 miles.

RECYCLING: NOT AS EASY AS YOU THINK Despite much of our waste bearing the symbol, Hampshire County Council don’t have the facilities to process all recyclable waste. You will correctly believe that items such as glass bottles, cardboard and plastic drinks bottles are processed. But toiletries bottles and aerosols? What about plastic food trays. And broken drinks glasses…admit it, you probably don’t really know. PAPER YES: In your kerbside collection most paper will be collected and recycled. However if you take it to the HWRC (Household Waste Recycling Centre) you may find that whilst they’ll recycle cardboard, normal paper and magazines are just thrown in with household waste. NO: Shredded paper, tissues, photographs and gift wrap. GLASS YES: Bottles and jars are widely recycled. Some councils do a kerbside collection, but if not they’ll need to go to a ‘Bottle Bank’. The HWRC will usually take panes of glass or mirrors. NO: Normal drinking glasses should be carefully wrapped and placed in the household waste bin. TOILETRIES YES: Anything bottle-shaped - including empty toiletries bottles and used aerosols – should be fine in the kerbside collection bins. NO: Face-wipes, cotton pads and mixed products like plastic razors go into household waste.

TETRAPAK/DRINKS CUPS YES AND NO: Containers used for orange juice, non-dairy milks and soup, together with plastic-lined cups provided in coffee shops, are not acceptable in a recycling kerbside collection. However there are a number of collection facilities around the county so do check online. PLASTIC YES: Again anything bottle-shaped including drinks bottles, cleaning products, toiletries. NO: One of the most surprising: HCC do not have the facilities to recycle ready meal/ takeaway trays or yoghurt pots. That careful washing of those tubs for recycling is just wasting your water. WHY THE PLASTIC RESTRICTION? Plastic pots, tubs and trays (PTT) are made up of a wide variety of polymers which cannot be successfully sorted in the Material Recovery Facilities without significant investment in new equipment. But even if the required equipment were to be installed, there are further issues. For example, the material needs a viable end market – i.e. a reprocessor who will physically recycle the material in a cost-effective manner. Currently there is no viable market for over half of the PTT that HCC could collect. This is an issue facing all local councils - the destination for the material with no market would be landfill or incineration. More information: http://tiny.cc/HCCplastic Finally, remember that if you put nonrecyclables into the wrong bin, it could contaminate the whole lot meaning nothing is recycled. And that would be a waste.

HCC are advising that residents must register their vehicle online in order to continue with free access to any HWRC. You will need to register by the 1st April or you will face a £5 charge, as will users resident outside the county but trying to use any Hampshire HWRC. https://www.hants.gov.uk/wasteandrecycling/recyclingcentres/vehicle-registration 26

SOUTHAMPTON KIDS AMONGST HEALTHIEST New research has revealed that the average child in Southampton is eating three items of fruit and vegetables a day, making Southampton the second healthiest place in the UK.

of their kids’ five-a-day, according to research by fruit snack company Fruit Bowl.

But eight out of ten children in Southampton are still not getting their full five-a-day. One in ten parents in the UK believe that chips count as one

And fifteen per cent of parents tell their kids that eating five-a-day will give them super powers like Superman.

In an attempt to get fruit and vegetables into a child’s diet, almost a quarter of parents say they hide them in other dishes. For example, putting finely chopped carrots in spaghetti bolognese.

UNIVERSITY FRAZZLED CAFÉ Southampton University will become the first college campus to have a Frazzled Cafe – a place to chill out from the overwhelming pressures of modern life – created by American actress, author and leading mental health campaigner Ruby Wax.

programme of peer support meetings for our students and staff.

She made the announcement when she was installed as the university’s 18th Chancellor.

“Good mental health is so important in today’s world where we often take for granted that everyone is okay and coping when they might not be and need that extra space to reflect and explore how best to move forward in life.”

People can share their personal stories in a safe, confidential and non-judgemental environment – a space where, in Ruby’s words, “it’s ok, to not be ok.” She said: “We live in a time where to have a life crammed to the hilt is considered a success story. But with all this pressure, so many of us have nowhere to go to meet and talk about it.” Southampton University’s president and vice chancellor Professor Mark E Smith welcomed the introduction of Frazzled Cafe to campus and city. He said: “We are delighted to be working with Ruby and the Frazzled Cafe charity to pilot a 28

“We are especially pleased to be the first ever university to host the Frazzled Cafe meetings which align perfectly with our Health and Well Being services and policies.

NEW VICAR OF NURSLING He always thought that Rownhams was a service station. Then the Rev Graeme Dixon got a call from the Bishop and he was on route to becoming the new Vicar of Nursling with Rownhams. He says: “It is an amazing community and people have been very welcoming, engaging and positive. It is lovely to walk around the parish, meet people and get a flavour of the area.” Before he joined the ministry, the Leicester University graduate worked for about 30 years in the healthcare and pharmaceutical industry. He comes to Rownhams from Totton where he was curate and is now warming to the challenge

of ministering to his Twin Spires Parish – so called because its two churches, St John’s, Rownhams and St Boniface, Nursling, have spires. St John’s was built in 1850s and St Boniface dates back to the 14th century. As he begins his new journey as vicar, Graeme says: “There are a lot of people to meet and at the moment I am in listening mode.” St John’s has a 100 strong Sunday congregation and St Boniface Church Hall has been revitalised since the Nursling Men’s Shed moved in. The new vicar hails from the South Shields area and is a keen Sunderland football fan. It is the first football result he looks for on a Saturday.

£8 MILLION NEW ROAD PROJECT An £8.13m project to transform eight junctions on the A326 - the critical road connecting the coastal communities along the New Forest Waterside of Southampton Water - will now commence in 2020, eight years ahead of schedule. The A326 is the only key highway corridor serving the Waterside Peninsular, home to some 70,000 people, with existing employment centres at Fawley Refinery and Solent Gateway port. Further large investments are planned along the Waterside, including the landmark Fawley Waterside development and the recent £750m investment at the ExxonMobil refinery. This demonstrates the unique appeal of the Waterside, situated between the globally renowned maritime environment of Southampton Water and the world-class environment of the New Forest National Park. The project represents the first step in the renaissance of the Waterside, an area of the Solent that has seen much industrial change and with communities that have so much potential to embrace the opportunities that sustainable economic growth will bring. Fawley Waterside Chief Executive and local resident, Aldred Drummond said: “Our ambition is to build one of the most beautiful small towns in England; A place with solid economic purpose. We are tremendously grateful for the investment from the LEP, which comes in alongside the £2.5m investment we are contributing to this transport improvement package.” Minister for Local Growth, Rt Hon Jake Berry MP, said: “We are committed to boosting economic growth and levelling up every place in the UK.” New Forest Leader, Councillor Barry Rickman said: “Our partnership with the LEP has strengthened and is flourishing. The New Forest is such a

30

special place - truly unique, with a world-class environment, majestic coastline, and great communities. But we cannot stand still if we want the New Forest to play an active and central role in the future economy, and investment in the A326 will improve people’s lives in our community today and underpin sustainable economic growth in the future, ensuring our coastal communities of the Waterside remain connected and share in improved prosperity.” Hampshire County Council’s Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Economy, Transport and Environment, Councillor Rob Humby said: “Our vision is to invest and empower the region now so that the Solent will be a productive and thriving region in 2050. To do this we work together to do the following: • Growing the skills base & supporting business growth • Enhancing transport connectivity • Enabling flagship sites for housing and employment To find out more visit: https://solentlep.org.uk

SOUTHAMPTON SCHOOL TITANIC GALLERY PUTS STUDENTS’ FUTURE FIRST

Nowhere was the tragedy of the Titanic disaster more felt than in Southampton, where more than 500 households lost a family member.

The students past and present from Oasis Academy Mayfield in Ashley Crescent have joined a programme run by the national education charity Future First which helps state schools and colleges develop ‘old school tie’ networks allowing them to harness the talents and experience of alumni to support the current generation. The former students will return to volunteer at assemblies and workshops designed to motivate young people and broaden their job horizons, so they are more likely to be able to achieve a career of their choice regardless of their background. More than 240,000 former students nationwide have already signed up to stay connected with their old school, motivating young people as career and education role models, mentors, work experience providers, governors and fundraisers.

The SeaCity Museum at the Civic Centre features a 1:25 scale interactive model of the Titanic showing the intricate layout of the vessel. Visitors are able to experience the sights and sounds of Southampton in 1912, a town bustling with activity and new shops, restaurants and businesses. The White Star Dock, later known as Ocean Dock, opened in 1911. It was from here, Berth 44, that the Titanic was to leave on 10 April, 1912. Through powerful oral testimony from survivors, the Disaster Room describes the sequence of events from the time the ship struck the iceberg to its sinking, and the rescue of passengers by the Carpathia.

THE CANINE CALMING EFFECT A canine crew are helping to sooth nerves of fliers before they jet off from Southampton International Airport.

The airport has taken on the four legged helpers and The Canine Crew – a pack of therapy dogs from the charity Therapy Dogs Nationwide, will be stationed at arrivals and departures along with their volunteer handlers. Having trialled the initiative in 2019 on a temporary basis, the furry faced employees will be a semi-permanent fixture at the airport and will be on patrol once a week. On a mission to help soothe nervous fliers and passengers with hidden disabilities, the therapy dogs are fully temperament tested and highly experienced in their trade. Commenting on the launch of Canine Crew, Simon Young, Head of Passenger Operations, said: “Having therapy dogs in our airport will not only benefit our passengers but also our staff. Fourlegged companions are well known for boosting general happiness and wellbeing as well as mood and we are very excited to welcome them to the Southampton Airport family. Our sister airport in Aberdeen was the first in the country to trial airport therapy dogs and we are happy to be carrying on that legacy.” Paulette Hockley, Placement Officer at Therapy

Dogs Nationwide, added: “We are very privileged to have passionate volunteers who keep our charity running by taking their own dogs into establishments to give comfort, distraction and stimulation. We are looking forward to working with Southampton Airport and sharing the benefits of Animal Assisted Therapy with both passengers and team members.” The Launch of Southampton Airport’s Canine Crew coincided with a charity collection for national pet charity, Blue Cross, which has a re-homing centre in West End. Southampton Airport will also feature a Southampton Blue Cross Rescue Dog of the Week on its social media channels to encourage re-homing of dogs at the animal charity. Speaking about the partnership, Kirsty Smith, Rehoming Supervisor at Blue Cross Southampton, said: “We see every day how incredible pets are and how much of a benefit they bring to our lives; through the joy they bring and often helping alleviate our stress and worry in difficult situations. We’re thrilled to be a part of the Canine Crew campaign and what a wonderful way to help get homeless dogs loving new homes – some of our rescues even go on to be therapy dogs themselves! All donations will go towards helping us give a better life to homeless pets whilst we try to find them new families.” 33

A FITTER FUTURE FOR HAMPSHIRE WOMEN As Sport England launches the next phase of its nationwide ‘This Girl Can’ initiative, Hampshire County Council is encouraging women to be physically active no matter what their shape, size or ability. Councillor Judith Grajewski said, “Lack of confidence and fear of being judged are real barriers to women being active so we are wholly supportive of the #fitgotreal campaign which recognises the reality of women’s lives. It doesn’t matter if you don’t have the right fitness gear or look picture perfect, the important thing is to get moving for your own health and wellbeing.” The seeks to celebrate women of all shapes, sizes, abilities and backgrounds. Women cite a number of practical and emotional pressures preventing them taking part in physical activity, such as judgment by others, lack of time, money and energy.

In Hampshire there are a number of activities that women can participate in for free: Walking for Health, a health walks scheme which is open to everyone. www.walkingforhealth.org.uk Park Run, which is safe and easy to take part in. www.parkrun.org.uk Energise Me, offers inspiration for being active, at work, outdoors or with a club. www.energiseme.org Get fit for free provides advice on how to get started. www.nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/free-fitness-ideas/ There are also several useful apps to get everyone going including: Couch to 5K www.nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/ get-running-with-couch-to-5k One You which looks at physical activity as one of a range of healthy lifestyle factors www.nhs.uk/oneyou 35

HOLYROOD, THE SAILOR’S CHURCH It was badly bombed in 1940 and its shell now remains as a memorial to those who served in the Merchant Navy. The original twelfth-century church stood further out into the High Street. It was moved back in 1320 to its present site. The troops leaving for Crécy in 1346 and Agincourt in 1415 would have prayed here before departing. In 1554 Philip of Spain prayed here on route to Winchester Cathedral where he married Queen Mary. He also brought in the new custom of exchanging gold rings.

FIRST CHURCH DIG Archaeologists have discovered what could be the first church to have been built on the site of Southampton’s mother church, St Mary’s. The incredible find has revealed remains of a huge masonry building that could be the foundations. Project Director Emma Anderson said “The size of the wall and the massive stones points to an early and important building, but we will have to wait for further analysis before we can be sure of its date. The method of construction dates back to the Roman period. Was this copied by the Saxon builders of the church, or was this building here already?” Vicar of St Mary’s, the Reverend Jon Finch, says: “We know that there have been Christians worshipping on this site for centuries, but this discovery could provide further evidence to show just how long there has been a faithful community here.” Frank Green, a specialist in the archaeology of church sites, said that as the archaeological finds from the site were processed, there would be a greater insight into the early history of the church and Christianity on the St Mary’s site. In 1914, the sound of its church bells inspired the song, The Bells of St. Mary’s, originally recorded in 1919 by Frances Alda and later sung by American crooner Bing Crosby in a film of the same name.

The date of the Quarter Jacks who strike every quarter of an hour is unknown but they were mentioned in 1760 and said to be old already. Richard Taunton’s tomb is at the rear of the church. The nave has a gravestone to John Speed, descendent of the great Elizabethan local map maker of the same name. The Ten Commandments are carved on the end wall and state that we should commit no murder rather than the more commonly used ‘Thou shalt not kill’. Its rare Brass Lectern dating from around 1350 with wings open was rescued from the burning church during the height of an air raid in 1940 by the churchwarden, Mr Blake, and a soldier. It is now in St Michael’s Church. It was painted dark brown and is regarded as a good example of an eagle in wood until the paint was scraped off. It is believed that it was painted so Cromwell’s men would not steal it during the English Civil War (1642–48). Just inside the church you will find a Titanic Memorial Fountain, which is dedicated to the firemen, stewards and crew from Southampton. It was paid for by the families and friends of the lost crew. The memorial was originally erected further north on Cemetery Road as a drinking fountain on 27 July 1915. It was moved to its current location in Holyrood Church on 15 April 1972 –the sixtieth anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. Source: ‘A-Z of Southampton’ by Martin Brisland 37

RANK HOVIS BUILDING A city councillor has backed calls for ports bosses to preserve the Rank Hovis Solent Flour Mill, saying it provides a “key link to the city’s industrial past”. He urges them to find a new purpose for the building, following claims that it could be demolished – something he believes would be a “tragedy”. “Whist I am fully behind ABP in wanting to establish a modern state-of-the-art cruise terminal in the vicinity of the former mill, we need to try and bring other partners in and instead of losing a much-loved part of our heritage, find a new purpose for the building

that can benefit both the city and the port. “ Cllr Sarah Bogle said: “We need to work with ABP to find alternative solutions to demolition, bring a new purpose for the building that benefits both the city and the port.” ABP did not confirm or deny the claims but stressed that port bosses are still working on plans for the site. The building was completed in October 1934 and was heralded the beginning of a new commercial life for Southampton Docks. But last year Hovis said a review of its milling business found that the Southampton Mill was “significantly loss-making” and it proposed to cease operations at the site at the end of 2018. The building is now empty.

ALL CHANGE FOR SOUTHAMPTON SWIMMING POOL It’s all change for a popular Southampton swimming pool which has made a big splash on the Lordshill scene. Oaklands Community Pool has had a complete overhaul of its dated changing facilities, which have not been improved since the pool first opened back in 1986. The £150,000 makeover is the biggest since it was saved from being permanently shut five years ago. The pool now has one unisex inclusive changing facility. Fears that the facility would close triggered off

SEABIN TO CATCH FLOATING LITTER Ground-breaking plastic pollution busting technology is being used in tackling maritime litter. A Seabin is being installed at the North East corner of Ocean Village Marina to collect floating rubbish along Southampton Water. It will sit in the water, moving up and down with the tide. By

a massive community campaign and two and a half years later the keys were handed over to the community group who have run it ever since. £1.7 million was spent on a facelift mainly for the plant room, the nerve centre of the 25-metre main pool and learner pool. Cash for the latest makeover has been raised through pool entry as well as cake sales and sponsored swims. The new look changing room has a smart wood effect and improved, accessible baby changing facilities as well as private showers and better toilets. It is being illuminated by low energy LED lights. Next on the pools to do list is an overhaul for the reception area. Pool bosses hope the new set up will work better for families, professionals, schools and classes like their own aqua fit sessions. drawing in water from the surface and passing it through a plastic bag it will catch floating litter like plastic bottles and microsplastics as small as 2mm in diameter. A single Seabin can collect up to 1.4 tons of litter each year – the equivalent of 90,000 plastic bags or 35,700 disposable cups. The Seabin is a collaboration between seven local organisations as part of Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust’s marine project, Secrets of The Solent.

ART TO TRANSFORM PUBLIC SPACES Street art is flowing in the heart of Southampton’s Cultural Quarter thanks to the city’s talented schoolkids. It has been created by pupils who took part in a competition run by the John Hansard Gallery and the city council. Six winning designs were picked from a shortlist of hundreds of submitted entries. Children, aged five to 11, were asked to help design public artwork which would leave a lasting impact on the city. Councillor Satvir Kaur, the city council’s cabinet member for homes and culture, said it was an amazing example of how art can be used to transform the city’s public spaces. The eye-catching artwork can be seen in Guildhall Square and Above Bar Street.
