The Gruffalo's Child © Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler 2004 - Macmillan Children's Books

The Gruffalo and Friends arrive at Mottisfont Colourful, characterful works by the much-loved children’s illustrator Axel Scheffler will be on display at the National Trust’s Mottisfont over the summer until 3 September. Axel Scheffler has been creating imaginative

illustrations for more than 30 years, and is perhaps best-known for his collaborations with Julia Donaldson, including the modern classics The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo’s Child.

Mottisfont’s exhibition will be very familyfocused. The gallery will be laid out to suit younger audiences, with lower-hanging pictures, a childfriendly guide and cosy reading spaces dotted throughout. It will be an immersive experience, with large, scene-setting vinyls and other decorations taken from Scheffler’s illustrations, alongside more traditionally hung artworks. Quotes from the books will also decorate the walls. A family activity trail, based around Mottisfont’s grounds, will run alongside the exhibition, with a craft activity to take home. As with the gallery, different areas of the gardens will be ‘themed’ for different stories and characters.

For more information about the exhibition, visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk or call 01794 340757.

Editor’s Letter

The infinite to do list My 20-year-old son is at university but was home for the summer. After a couple of days of wind down, I had to start reminding him of some of the ‘grown-up’ jobs that needed doing. His car needed an MOT and an insurance renewal (I’m paying, but I’m not doing the work as well!). It was Father’s Day and some birthdays, so presents were needed. He had to firm up some work to ensure his social life would be in place for the next year. And following an operation on my shoulder he needed to be taxi service/recycling monitor/ groceries topper-upper/cook etc. First world problems I know, but he found it exhausting. It wasn’t doing the jobs, it was just

the constant nag in his brain (and I admit in his ear) that stuff needed doing. Of course, this lead him nicely to procrastination from which we all suffer. Ordering something fun online and having it delivered next day? No problems doing that. It wasn’t right and it needs to be sent back? Boring. So we put it off, until we are a day away from running out of time. And yet…there’s a significant satisfaction in actually having cleared away the backlog and 9 times out of 10, the thought of what’s to be done is far worse than the actual doing. I’m not going to sign out with ‘the moral of the story’ by the way – I’m a ‘sufferer’ as much as the next person. But I would say…if you were thinking of calling one of our advertisers, just do it. I have, and they are great!

Dovetail Framing – where the framer comes to you! Awbridge picture framer, Jonathan Birch, has qualified as a Guild Certified Framer (GCF), the qualification that recognises skilled framers and allows consumers to find excellent craftsmanship and service. Over 1300 framers worldwide have qualified, and locals are lucky to have one to hand at Dovetail Framing. GCFs are awarded their qualification by the Fine Art Trade Guild, the industry’s trade association. After months of study and preparation, candidates sit a rigorous examination where their skills and knowledge are tested by an independent assessor. Jonathan was selected to receive a national award, which helped him prepare. “Last year I received a scholarship sponsored by the Guild and framing supplier Arqadia, which enabled me to attend a number of courses in preparation for the examination”, he says. “On the day of the assessment, I submitted three pieces of framed work, sat a written examination and carried out practical tests to ensure that I met the Guild’s standards”

Qualifying is not just about pride, but adds value for customers. Jonathan demonstrates an understanding of conservation framing, the use of appropriate materials to avoid future problems and the range of framing options customers may require. Knowledge and technology improve all the time, and key is a commitment to Continuing Professional Development, which is your assurance that you are trusting a craftsman who is knowledgeable and can advise appropriately.

Jonathan remains enthusiastic about the future: “I have enjoyed working with customers over the last few years and look forward to employing new skills to enhance and protect more works of art in the future. If you need help, call on 01794 341274, e-mail on info@dovetailframing.co.uk or visit www. dovetailframing.co.uk – I’ll be delighted to help” 8

History

MAN’S BEST FRIEND By Catherine Rose The domestic dog (canis familiaris) has been around for almost 20 thousand years. Despite much speculation, modern research has concluded that all dogs are descended from the grey wolf (canis lupus), although it is difficult to see what some of today’s diverse breeds have in common with them. Today’s domestic dog is the most varied mammal on earth in terms of shape, size and behaviour. The oldest dog remains date back 19 thousand years and were uncovered at a Palaeolithic site close to the Ukraine. Another Palaeolithic tomb excavated in Israel contained the skeletons of a man and his dog who had been buried together, demonstrating the bond in life between the two. Like man, wolves are sociable pack animals who accept the authority of a group leader. This made them readily adaptable to human leadership, being naturally loyal and able to obey the rules of their pack. Scientists believe that our hunter-

gatherer forefathers took grey wolf puppies from the wild, taming and interbreeding them to have traits according to the needs of their owners – from being hunting companions to helping herd livestock. This selective breeding meant that some dogs developed an acute sense of smell, hearing or vision, while others developed speed and stamina, or guarding, hunting and retrieving skills. These traits evolved over thousands of years to produce diverse canine types that were then bred within those types to evolve into the domestic dog breeds we have today. We know from murals that dogs were kept by the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. Chinese emperors lavished so much care on their canine companions that they were even said to have their own servants. In Europe, owning a dog gained popularity from the 13th century onwards, and during the Middle Ages it became a status symbol. Dogs were still largely kept for purpose rather than pleasure until the mid-19th century, when the Victorians made family pet-owning a sought-after social practice. With it came organised dog shows and the birth of the Kennel Club in 1873 to differentiate between and regulate ‘pure’ or pedigree breeds. Dogs outside of the specialisations came to be

known as mixed breed or mongrels. The first Crufts was held in 1891.

RSJ COMPUTER SERVICES SUPPORTING YOUR PC

Different dog breeds differ widely in their life spans. Larger dogs tend to be shorter lived: Great Danes, for example, typically only survive eight years. The breed with the shortest lifespan - around five years - is said to be the Dogue de Bordeaux, while the longest-lived breeds are Toy Poodles and Border terriers, both of which can survive for up to 15 years. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the oldest dog was a mongrel named Pusuke, who was almost 27 years old when he ‘crossed over the rainbow bridge’. Our long relationship with dogs runs deep into the backwaters of human history and will no doubt continue to do so. With the right training, dogs have consistently proved themselves to be intelligent, loyal, affectionate and often invaluable companions, rightfully earning themselves a place within our homes as a much-loved member of the A5 hp adv:Layout 1 23/6/17 10:25 Page 1 family.

Recipe

lamb koftas with minted couscous

SERVES 4 Ready in 50 minutes

This flavour-packed dish is great for a late summer lunch or dinner. Serve with warmed flatbreads and tzatziki, if liked. FOR THE KOFTAS

• 350g lean minced lamb • ½ red onion, finely chopped • 1 garlic clove, crushed • 2tsp ground coriander • 2tsp ground cumin • 1tsp smoked paprika • 2tbsp fresh chopped coriander • Squeeze of lemon juice FOR THE COUSCOUS

• 225g couscous • 3tbsp olive oil • 1tbsp lemon juice • ¼ cucumber, finely diced • 4 spring onions, trimmed and finely chopped • 3tbsp fresh chopped mint • 4 tomatoes, cut into chunks • Lemon wedges and mint sprigs to garnish 18

1. To make the koftas, place the mince, onion, garlic,

spices, fresh coriander and lemon juice in a food processor. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper, then process until very finely minced.

2. Divide the mixture into 12 and using clean damp

hands, shape each into an oval. Push each oval onto the end of a long wooden skewer (see tip) and place on a foil-lined grill pan. Cook under a preheated medium grill for 8-10 minutes, turning frequently, until browned and cooked through.

3. Meanwhile, make the couscous. Place the couscous in

a heatproof bowl and pour over 250ml boiling water. Cover and leave to soak for about 10 minutes, until all the water has been absorbed. Fluff the couscous with a fork and stir in the olive oil, lemon juice, cucumber, spring onions and mint. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

4. Serve the koftas with the couscous and tomatoes, garnished with lemon wedges and mint sprigs.

TIP

Soak the wooden skewers in cold water for about 20 minutes to prevent the ends burning under the grill.

SUPPORTING OUR FORCES VETERANS A regular garage and workshop with a significant difference When you get into the premises of Forces Re-Engineered in Andover, you wonder what is different. They service and repair cars and motorcycles as any other garage. The difference is made by the owner and founder, Stephan West, of the non-profit making community interest company.

The company’s aim is to give forces veterans the chance of apprenticeships to become fully qualified vehicle technicians whilst helping to deal with their suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and adjust back into civilian life. A chance they would otherwise have been denied, since the government subsidises apprenticeships only up to the age of twenty-three, making companies unwilling to offer the former. The garage’s specialism is the Volkswagen Group. Stephan did his apprenticeship and Master Technician with Volkswagen in Germany,

although the workshop services and repairs all makes of cars.

The premises allow the apprentices to have time out in a specially designed rest room. They have the full support from the local College, as well as from Combat Stress.

Not being a charity, Forces Re-Engineered rely on their business! More business means more apprenticeships being offered, more equipment affordable, as well as courses for the apprentices and more qualified staff to help instruct the former. Their Motto is: HELPING YOU WITH YOUR VEHICLE HELPING US TO SUPPORT A NEW START

Refurbished centre invites visitors to explore Test Valley Test Valley’s visitors can find everything they need to know about the borough in a brand new, fully refurbished Visitor Information Centre in Romsey’s town centre.

The newly decorated centre re-opened at King John’s House following temporary arrangements at Paulton’s Park and Mottisfont House while the work was carried out. Anyone who pops in to the centre can pick up leaflets and brochures as well as purchase gifts, souvenirs, books and postcards.

Julia West, Manager of the Romsey Visitor Information Centre, said: “Test Valley Borough Council’s commitment to improving the Visitor Information Centre shows its support for tourism and the businesses which enable it. We are very grateful that so much hard work has gone into the project and we look forward to welcoming our first visitors.”

Test Valley Borough Council’s Economic Development and Tourism Portfolio Holder, Councillor David Drew, added: “Many people see the centre as providing an essential community service, not just for visitors on holiday in the area but also for local residents who can book tickets for shows at the Plaza Theatre for example. The centre is a welcoming and well-placed source of information for anyone wanting to know more about the area.”

The Life List

Colourful Language by Derek Thompson

Advertising spellbinds some people, while others find it about as interesting as watching paint dry. But when it comes to advertising paint, the labels don’t always make sense. Isn’t it time for a colour palette we can all relate to? WHITES - Sterilised milk you meant to put in the fridge yesterday. The bath needs a clean but it’ll do for now. Celebrity teeth. Unwritten essay page. REDS - Bloodshot eyes. A tomato juice smoothie. Chilli pepper you shouldn’t try to eat in one bite. Of course I’ll be careful with the needle. ORANGES - I spent too long in the tanning

26

booth. Rather like the fruit. Road works’ warning lights. Goldfish. YELLOWS - I think that might be infected. The cheese from an in-flight salad. Badly made homemade custard. Come on, referee! BROWNS - Rusty bicycle abandoned in a hedge. Ditch water. Chocolate brownie. I can’t drink this tea. GREENS - I wouldn’t eat that cheese if I were you. There can’t be any goodness left in these boiled vegetables. Grass stain on a new pair of white jeans. Kermit. PURPLES - Heavy bruising. That Teletubby with a TV aerial on its head. Red cabbage. Somewhere between blueberries and bluebells. GREYS - Actual British summer sky. It looked more like silver on the tin. Senior citizen in need of a hairstylist. Somewhere between an elephant and a rhinoceros. BLUES - Paraffin. Like the Bayou. We need to put the central heating on. How we remember British summer skies from childhood.

green Oak garden design The environment provides us with many elements we perhaps take for granted. Natural resources which are both renewable and nonrenewable. Nature purifies water, and provides us with a biodiverse environment, all of which provide natural capital wealth. Upon researching the word sustainability, it becomes apparent that it can be quite ambiguous, therefore it can feel overwhelming to the garden designer. Presumably the question most designers would be asking themselves is, how many ‘sustainable features/ elements’ are sufficient for one to be able to warrant the label ‘sustainable’?This list is by no means exhausted however in brief, to channel the design instantly in the right direction consider;

• detailed planning with close attention to aspects such as drainage and the integration of more vegetation. Create your planting to minimise the need for water (know an Xeriscaping), so right plant; right place.

• hard-landscaping materials - paths/drives - select untreated materials and source as locally as possible. • materials which encourage drainage rather than hinder it – consider crushed brick, mulch, or gravel. Additionally these materials could be reclaimed/recycled.

• allow areas of the lawn to grow long/add a meadow to encourage pollinating insects; thus increasing biodiversity.

Discover Art in the Garden Sir Harold Hillier Gardens continues to showcase over 100 exciting new sculptures for Art in the Garden's 18th year. The sculptures are made from various mediums including glass, ceramic and recycled materials. This year there is a giant Walking Ammonite (pictured) by local Isle of Wight artist, Glenn Martin. Glenn makes sculptures that are inspired by nature, creating his organic forms from recycled materials. The sculpture creates a striking outline across the Winter Garden and will delight and intrigue children and adults alike.

Curator Jo Field, carefully chooses the locations for the sculptures explains: “The installation of sculptures into our beautifully landscaped gardens creates an added dynamism and interest. Art in the Garden continues to extend its range and diversity with pieces suitable for every size of garden. There is always something to please everyone.” Art in the Garden runs until mid October.

DEMENTIA FRIENDLY GYMNASTICS ACHIEVES REMARKABLE RESULTS A report recently published shows a new chairbased gymnastics exercise programme has significant benefits for those living with dementia. The research, conducted by Age UK on behalf of the British Gymnastics Foundation, found the programme to have benefits in the physical, emotional and cognitive aspects of older people, and people with mild to advanced forms of dementia appearing to benefit the most.

An exercise booklet is available, to buy or download, which will help you try the Love to Move programme in your own home with your loved ones. Booklets can be bought by calling 0345 1297129 Ext. 2315 or you can download a copy for free on their website britishgymnasticsfoundation.org/lovetomove.

The Love to Move programme, created by the British Gymnastics Foundation, is aimed at getting older people moving and functioning better, with a view to improving the lives of those living with dementia. If someone close to you is living with dementia, you will naturally want to do everything you can to help them to enjoy life as much as possible.
