CAN WE GIVE YOU £50?! Producing this magazine for Southampton residents (and the other 11 areas we do around Southampton) is no small task. We put a lot of effort in to finding what community news we can, researching the events listings, and working with our advertisers, without whom we wouldn’t have a magazine at all. The very last stage of the process is magazine distribution. We print 14,000 copies of Discover Southampton and deliver to selected areas in postcodes SO15, SO16 and SO17; so, 14,000 homes should get a copy every other month. Most of our distribution is completed by a team of distributors; about 30 people hit the streets and deliver door to door. However, a lot of homes in the postcode sector SO16 7 (including Bassett and Chilworth) are tricky to cover with long drives, on steep hills and gated. So, we use
Royal Mail to do the delivery – they are going door to door anyway, so it makes sense for us to pay them to do it. I have nothing but admiration for the girls and boys, men and women and posties who do the deliveries for us reliably in all weathers. But like all professional organisations, quality control is important. And we like to be sure the local Royal Mail office cover the homes that we think they should. To check all the routes being done accurately and on time we carry out a series of checks but as an extra monitoring method I’ve set up a Delivery Hotline for readers. Could I ask for your help? BUZZCOCKS STAR COMES TO TOWN Stand-up comedian, poet, improviser and TV stalwart Phill Jupitus will deliver over an hour of tales, laughs and diversions at Nuffield Southampton Theatres on Sunday, 17 September, as part of his new UK tour Phill Jupitus: Juplicity. A treat for live comedy fans in and around Southampton, Phill will take to the main stage at NST Campus to make light of the chaos in his own life and the uncertain world that surrounds it. It promises to delight and horrify for audiences in equal measure, with adult themes and situations, but delivered childishly. “A true comic talent” (Manchester Evening News) and “a talented focused wordsmith” (Fest), Phill became a familiar face to UK audiences when he became a team captain on BBC2’s pop quiz Never Mind The Buzzcocks in 1996, which ran for 19 years. Aside from Never Mind The Buzzcocks, Phill has performed live stand up shows all over the UK, and has appeared as a regular guest on QI, Alan Davies As Yet Untitled and Live at the Apollo.

SKILLS AND CONFIDENCE GROW AS HIGH NUMBERS OF YOUNG PEOPLE COMPLETE THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH’S AWARD Young people in Hampshire are more likely than those from other areas to complete the Duke of Edinburgh’s (DofE) Award, boosting their employability, confidence and skills, and contributing to their communities along the way. In the last year, some 69% of participants in Hampshire completed their DofE Award. This compares with 57% of participants across the South East Region. Leader of Hampshire County Council and Vice President of the Hampshire Duke of Edinburgh’s forum, Councillor Roy Perry, said: “The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award gives many young people the
self-assurance, inspiration and skills they need to succeed in adulthood. It’s a tough programme and not everyone completes it, which is why we’re especially proud that, in Hampshire, such a high proportion of young people are gaining the Award.” In Hampshire, around 115 local schools, colleges and open centres operate as DoE centres. They work with the County Council, accessing support with activities such as recruiting new entrants, training scheme leaders, finding volunteers to help run sessions, lead expeditions and assist young people to set up their activities. This package of support, funded collectively by the centres that use it, enables a consistently high standard of training and resourcing to be maintained across centres in the county. Currently more than 4,000 young people in Hampshire are working towards a Duke of Edinburgh Award. HOUSEPLANTS GO HOME

Most houseplants need to be just that, plants in houses, but come the summer it usually gives them a real boost to get the higher natural light levels, refreshing (relatively warm) rainfall and seriously fresh air. But now that September is here it is time to bring them indoors – colder nights will cause damage, especially to some of the more tender varieties. Before bringing them in, check your plants over. Use a sharp pair of scissors to remove dead, damaged or dying leaves, cutting back neatly into clean, healthy growth. Next inspect the stems, foliage and any flowers for pests and diseases - it always pays to bring houseplants in totally clean. Look out for white powdery mildew deposits, often accompanied by a bit of leaf yellowing, and check for greyish fuzzy fungal patches caused by the notorious Botrytis or grey mould. Also look for pests like scale insects - tiny brownish elliptical insects which feed beneath leaves or on soft stems, often producing copious quantities of sticky, sugary honeydew - or aphids, which may be found clustered on the more tender, newer growth. These must be dealt with before the plants go indoors, as once inside the pests will flourish in the warmer, more protected conditions, and will soon multiply and may even spread. Most problems like these, if caught early, can be dealt with by using scissors or secateurs to snip off infected areas, or by some careful picking 16
off by hand. If you find scale insects, aphids or fluffy patches of mealy bug, there is a brilliant environmentally-friendly biocontrol that is also safe for you and your pets. For more information, visit www.pippagreenwood.com/products/protectyour-crops. Next, inspect the pots, including the surface of the compost and beneath the base and rim of the pot itself. If you can, and as long as the plant won’t be damaged in the process, gently ease it out of its pot and check the root ball - this is the perfect place for stowaways like vine weevils, slugs and snails. Not the sort of house guests you or your plants would appreciate, I’m sure. When the check over is complete, gently scrape away the uppermost surface of the compost and replace with the same quantity of fresh, similar compost, wipe down the sides of the pot and take your plants inside, taking care not to put them anywhere which is too hot, too dry or too draughty for their liking.
Once your old favourites are safely re-installed in their old positions and are free from unwanted guests, you may like to treat yourself to a new houseplant or two. There are some wonderful (and good value) houseplants readily available in garden centres and supermarkets now - how about a marvellously elegant moth orchid (Phalaenopsis)? I treated myself to a couple this summer and I know that even with my sometimes erratic care they should keep on performing for years to come!

CREATIVE WRITING Helping Your Child To Create Stories By Kate Duggan Whether they’re slaying dragons or discovering new worlds, children’s imagination knows no bounds. When it comes to creating stories with characters and plots though, it can be difficult to get started when faced with a blank page. A few props and story prompts can really help to get those creative juices flowing. Creating characters Fill a cloth bag with accessories, such as perfume and aftershave samples, a silk tie, an old pair of glasses, a toy, a brooch, a hat, a watch and other personal items. Try to avoid things that your child already associates with someone they know. Scour your local charity shops and ask friends for donations. You could also add a few fantastical items to the bag, like a pirate hat, fairy wand, bottle of witch’s potion, toy spaceship and so on. Ask your child to choose two or three items from the bag, without looking. Then ask them to create a character based around the items. Ask questions to help. What does the character look like? Are they male or female? How old are they? What do they like doing? Where do they live? And so on. Your child can then write about their character, or draw a picture of them, or both. Creating stories If your child is struggling to think of a story, creative prompts can help them to get started. You could come up with a scenario and ask them to think about what might happen next. For example, ‘Your character finds a door hidden behind a bookcase. It’s only two feet high, so they have to crawl through it. What do they find when they do?’ 22
Alternatively, you can write short story prompts on pieces of paper. Here’s a few to get you started: • Goes to space • Gets lost • Makes a new friend • Invents something • Has their wish come true • Goes on holiday • Discovers they have a superpower • Finds a hurt animal • Discovers a secret door Fold each story prompt up so it can’t be read, and ask your child to choose one or two. They can then use the prompts as the basis for their story. Don’t be too rigid. If they don’t like the prompt, let them pick another. If they have a different idea for a story, even better! Telling their story Storytelling isn’t just about writing. Your child could: • Tell you the story • Act it out • Make puppets and put on a show • Create a comic strip Extra resources There are lots of free online resources to help you. A good place to start is www.youngwriters.co.uk, which offers downloadable workshops and activities. Creativity for Kids makes fun craft kits, including Create Your Own Pop Up Books. The kit includes two books, several colouring pens, stickers and popup elements (see main picture). It kept our young testers entertained for a good couple of hours, and the results have become treasured keepsakes. The kit costs £16.50 and can be bought from Amazon, Hobbycraft and independent arts and craft shops. If your child needs a bit of motivation, they could enter a competition. Libraries and literacy organisations often organise or advertise children’s creative writing competitions, as do Writing Times (www.writingtimes.co.uk), Young Writers (www.youngwriters.co.uk) and Families magazine (www.familiesonline.co.uk).
JOY OVER BIRTH OF ENDANGERED FOAL Staff at Marwell Zoo are celebrating the birth of a critically endangered African wild ass – giving a huge boost to one of the rarest animals in the world. Nine year old Nadifa and foal are said to be happy and healthy. This is the ass’ second foal to be born at Marwell after she gave birth to a female foal in 2013. Firsttime dad Lars arrived from Safari de Peaugres in France in April last year. The birth of the foal is a huge boost to a species that has been on the critically endangered list since 1996, with estimates suggesting that there could be around 600 left in the wild today. Animal Collection Manager Ian Goodwin said: “We are one of only three collections in the UK holding
a breeding herd of African wild ass, which makes its arrival so important. We are all really proud to see this wonderful new addition doing so well.” The wild population of the African wild ass is based in the harsh and remote lands of Eritrea or Ethiopia. It is unknown whether there are any left in Somalia. Marwell has always been key in the conservation of this special breed and the first-ever British born African wild ass was born at Marwell in 1996.

HAMPSHIRE’S FIVE COUNTRY PARKS AMONG BEST GLOBALLY WITH GREEN FLAG AWARDS Hampshire County Council’s five country parks are among the best in the world after being awarded Green Flags. The international award, now into its third decade, is a sign to the public that Lepe, Manor Farm, Queen Elizabeth, Royal Victoria and Staunton country parks boast the highest possible environmental standards, are beautifully maintained, and have excellent visitor facilities. Councillor Andrew Gibson, the County Council’s Executive Member for Culture, Recreation and Countryside, said: ‘We’re delighted that our popular country parks have once again been recognised as world class open spaces for residents to enjoy. Green Flag Awards are hard earned and are only given to the best green spaces across the globe. Our staff, volunteers and partners are rightly proud of this excellent their achievement.” Over the next four years, the County Council will be improving a range of country park facilities in Hampshire. The work includes providing new and improved visitor centres, cafés, play equipment, trails and parking, as well as enhancing the unique habitats, heritage and breath-taking scenery found at the five country parks.

Each of Hampshire’s country parks offers something unique. • Facilities at Lepe Country Park in the New Forest are being improved thanks to £2.7 million investment from the County Council for a new visitor centre and café offering views of the Solent and Isle of Wight, sensory garden, play equipment, landscape works, improved play and better car parking. • Manor Farm and River Hamble Country Park, near Bursledon, can be enjoyed by all - whether it’s walking, cycling or horse riding in the woods, or on the banks of the River Hamble. Children can enjoy meeting the animals in the historic farm, or play in the Barnfield play area. • Queen Elizabeth Country Park, near Petersfield, is Hampshire’s biggest country park with more than 200 acres of woodland and downland. The park’s visitor centre will be transformed as part of a planned £3 million programme of improvements, including a bigger café, more welcoming entrance, outdoor sheltered area and space for tourismbased businesses. • Royal Victoria Country Park sits on the shores of the Solent, near Netley. A £3.2 million project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the County Council is currently underway, to conserve its historic Chapel - the only remaining part of what was once the world’s largest military hospital when it was built in 1863. • Staunton Country Park, near Havant, will have its 200-year-old Regency landscapes restored, and a new visitor centre installed as part of a £3.8 million project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Big Lottery Fund and the County Council, ahead of Staunton’s bicentenary in 2019.

The Modernist architect Le Corbusier (a man who knew a thing or two about designing buildings) advised readers of his collected essays: “Never undress in your bedroom. It is not a clean thing to do and makes the room horribly untidy.” Clearly, this was a man who was strongly in favour of separate dressing rooms. Move on almost 100 years or so and, while most of us don’t really feel that it’s unhygienic to take our clothes off in the bedroom, many of us do yearn for the luxury of a dressing room, a dedicated place in which to store clothes in good order, leaving the bedroom as a comfortable, tranquil place uncluttered by bulky wardrobes and chests of drawers. When space allows, this could be an immensely useful, functional space, as large and luxurious as you like, containing not just clothes storage but also room for a dressing table, seating and plenty of mirrors. When space is restricted, perhaps in an apartment or older property, you may find that it is more efficient to turn a small room, part of a large landing or one end of a bathroom or the master bedroom into a dressing area packed with carefully designed storage. How big should a dressing room be? The most effective way to work it out is simply to get out your tape and measure everything that you’re planning to put in the room, then draw up plans and elevations of where and how they’ll fit. Most people opt for a combination of hanging space 44
and drawers. Think of rails for full, half and three-quarter-length hanging, deep, shallow and compartmentalised drawers, and useful fittings such as tie holders, pull-out shelves, boxes, trouser hangers and laundry bins. The hard-to-reach top parts of the space are ideal for infrequently used items, and shoes can be kept in racks or on trees at the bottom. To turn your space from a walk-in wardrobe to a full-on dressing room, leave enough space for a dressing table with a good mirror and drawers for cosmetics, hair styling kit and so on. A full-length mirror is essential, and for drying hair you’ll need a plug socket nearby. There are three ways to fit out the space: find a carpenter or joiner to make you an utterly bespoke room; commission a fitted-furniture specialist and choose from one of their ranges; or use off-theshelf elements, readily available from DIY sheds or storage specialists, and make it up yourself. The latter option, though undeniably the cheapest, has the disadvantage of being less flexible and, because all the parts will be made to standard measurements, may not make the best use of your space, particularly if it is awkwardly shaped. It is important to get the lighting right in a dressing room. Wall fittings, dangling pendants and floor lamps may be in the way, so inset ceiling spotlights are often the best option. Ensure that you have enough to light the room brightly, particularly if your finishes are dark. And if you decide to screen off your clothes with doors, fit sensor-operated lights that switch on when you open the doors.
While the organisation of storage is essentially utilitarian, there is always an element of aesthetics, too. Even plain, open-fronted storage comes in a choice of finishes, while bespoke versions could incorporate exotic woods, leather or wicker. CREATING A DRESSING ROOM AREA IN A BEDROOM If you don’t have space for a dedicated dressing room, consider sectioning off one end of the bedroom instead. Use a curtain or screen to separate the spaces or build a false wall to act as a headboard and, on the other side, a wardrobe. Make the wall as high as the hanging space needed for your longest clothes, but stop it short of the ceiling to increase the sense of space and light in the room. As with any space-saving storage requirements, ensure that any fitted furniture makes use of the full height and width available, and look for clever fittings such as corner carousels, pulldown hangers and tilting laundry baskets.

SPORTS FOR SOLENT Work on a brand new sports building at Southampton Solent University’s city centre campus is set to start after being given the go ahead by the city council’s planning panel.

The best solutions for students and schoolwork
It’s that time of year again: schools, colleges and universities are readying for a new term and parents are running around trying to get everything their children need. Increasingly that includes technology, whether that’s a basic laptop for younger children’s homework or an all-rounder for studying, social media and streaming video at home or in student accommodation. It’s worth thinking about streaming video if your children are staying away from home, because you can 1 get almost all the TV you want for free, entirely legally, via the internet and most catchup TV apps (BBC Iplayer does need a licence). There’s no need for a pricey Sky or Virgin contract, just a decent broadband service. If video is going to be a key thing, make sure whatever you buy has a good-sized screen or buy a Chromecast, which enables you to stream video from your computer to a TV. The best all-rounder is a Windows 10 laptop, and you’ll find lots of really good bargains from the likes of Dell, Lenovo, HP, Acer and Asus around the £400 mark. There’s another option: tablets such as the iPad. Previously we’ve said they aren’t really ideal for serious work but that’s changed with the arrival of the iPad Pro, which is a genuine alternative to a powerful laptop. It’s pricey though (from £619) with another £159 for a keyboard cover or £99 for the Apple Pencil (£99). 50
In the unlikely event that your child doesn’t already have a phone, give Apple a miss unless you’re really fond of their products or don’t care about the cost: Lenovo’s P2 and the Moto G5 are both brilliant Android smartphones and cost less than £150 SIM-free. 2 And if they need an e-reader, Amazon’s all-conquering Kindle remains the one to get - but you don’t need to buy the top-end Kindle Voyage (£169): the basic Kindle is just £59.99 and does the job perfectly well. It’s worth checking your insurance policies too, especially if your children will be moving out for college or university. Your home insurance might already cover your children’s gadgets when they’re away from home, but don’t assume that’s the case - and if they do, check the excesses, which might be higher than the cost of repairing or replacing a gadget. The same applies to any contents insurance you may take out for your children’s accommodation. Lots of companies have insurance policies specifically designed for students’ computers and smartphones, and sites such as money.co.uk enable you to compare the cover, cost and excesses quickly. We’d particularly recommend insurance that covers you for accidental damage: if something can be dropped, smashed or accidentally covered in liquid, it probably will be.
