Editor’s Letter

The Good and Bad of Online Communities My 10 year old Labrador took himself off for a walk last week and was found hot and weary, looking very sorry for himself indeed. Within minutes, a good citizen had featured a “lost dog” post on our neighbourhood Facebook group and he was safely home within hours. I’ve joined other groups in areas we publish Discover and within minutes hundreds of people know about a local incident such as the fire (Hythe Pier was one) missing persons etc; it’s lovely to read about communities supporting, pulling together and rallying round. These are just a few examples of the benefits of such communication online, but it’s not always the case. I’ve removed myself from a group where members’ rants and offensive remarks made me feel very uncomfortable. The anonymity I think means people say things they wouldn’t say in person, or with reflection, wouldn’t say at all.

There are of course many people who avoid social media and buy a good old fashioned newspaper. These people also value local magazines like Discover Meon Valley to find local businesses who advertise and are at their service. The magazine is made possible by the investment of our local advertisers so please support them and say you found them in Discover! Like almost every business these days, Discover Magazines has an active Facebook page and the website is updated with What’s On events, so feel free to follow us and post local activity and – please – always be nice!

The Gruffalo and Friends arrive at Mottisfont Colourful, characterful works by the much-loved children’s illustrator Axel Scheffler will be on display at the National Trust’s Mottisfont over the summer until 3 September. Axel Scheffler has been creating imaginative illustrations for more than 30 years, and is perhaps best-known for his collaborations with Julia Donaldson, including the modern classics The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo’s Child. Mottisfont’s exhibition will be very familyfocused. The gallery will be laid out to suit younger audiences, with lower-hanging pictures, a childfriendly guide and cosy reading spaces dotted throughout. It will be an immersive experience, with large, scene-setting vinyls and other decorations taken from Scheffler’s illustrations,

alongside more traditionally hung artworks. Quotes from the books will also decorate the walls. A family activity trail, based around Mottisfont’s grounds, will run alongside the exhibition, with a craft activity to take home. As with the gallery, different areas of the gardens will be ‘themed’ for different stories and characters. If It Appreciates, Buy It; If It Depreciates, Lease It Those wise words were said by oil tycoon John Paul Getty: a man who knew something about looking after money. And he’s right. Especially when it comes to cars. If you have half-million plus to buy a Ferrari Dino 246 GTS then, I say, you are wise to make that purchase. For next year you might make £100,000 when you sell it. But if you only have £10,000 to buy a Fiat 500 then I reckon, fun car as it is (I’ve got one), you are mad. Two cars from the same company at polar opposites on the pay-scale, but I advise you to buy the expensive one. For the 500, and any other

mass-market car, I advise leasing every time. Manufacturers and dealers are desperate to shift cars so deals on new ones are phenomenal. When I bought the aforementioned 500 for my daughters, after the “deposit contribution”, the service package, the low RFL fee and the Fiat-backed lease deal were factored in the monthly payments were cheaper than if I had bought a two year old model with 20,000 miles on the clock. Plus I’ve an extra two years before the MOT is due. You get no discounts for cash either. Dealers sell the finance options because they get commission and the repayment risk is passed to the finance firm. A win-win for them. So, keep your money in the bank instead of watching it drain away on what you spend on that car. Mr Getty was right. Collectable cars go up in value, so buy, buy, buy. Beware Of Ticks When Walking Your Dog Ticks pose a serious health risk to your dog during the summer and early autumn months, particularly if you take them for walks through bracken and heather. If your dog has a long coat, a tick will barely be noticeable on the skin, so it’s important that you physically check their body when you finish your walk.

What does a tick look like?

Ticks are tiny spider-like creatures that attach themselves to a ‘host,’ and feed on their blood. Once they start to feed, the tick increases in size and becomes more noticeable to the human eye.

Although it’s tempting to pull a tick from your dog, part of it is likely to remain under their skin which can have serious health consequences in the months that follow.

You can buy a dedicated tick remover from your local pet shop or veterinary practice. Although other methods of removing ticks exist, tick removers allow you to twist and pull the tick from your dog, bringing the entire body away.

Why are ticks dangerous to your pet?

Ticks cause Lyme disease, or Lyme borreliosis, in dogs, but signs of illness don’t commonly appear until several months after they have been bitten. Symptoms include: • High fever.

• Loss of appetite.

BABIES ISSUED WITH LIBRARY CARDS

Parents are signing up their babies to their local library at the same time as registering their births, as part of a new County Council initiative.

In the past year, 1,267 new arrivals have received their very own cards from Hampshire Library Service after visiting Hampshire Registration Service. The voluntary scheme has seen around 20% of all babies registered in Hampshire join the service since May 2016. Councillor Andrew Gibson, Executive Member for Culture, Recreation and Countryside, said: “This is a wonderful initiative with our Registration Service to help place our libraries at the heart of family life. It’s never too early to start enjoying books with your little one – introducing skills like listening and identifying shapes and colours before they can read.” For more details visit hants.gov.uk/librariesandarchives/library/jointhelibrary

Advertorial

Mr Mohamed Ismail is a Consultant Urologist practising at Spire Portsmouth Hospital

“Dear Doctor” I recently read an article on kidney stones and being a male in my early 40’s, I think I’m at risk. Is there anything I can do to prevent developing kidney stones? Kidney stones are on the rise with one in ten people likely to develop this over the course of their lifetime. Stone disease typically affects males aged 30-60 of Caucasian origin. Certain medical conditions also increase your risk of forming kidney stones such as; inflammatory bowel disease, urinary tract infection, and obesity. The best way to prevent kidney stones is to ensure you drink plenty of fluids on a daily basis, I recommend 3 litres a day to maintain urine output of more than 2.5 litres per day. Exercise can also reduce the risk of kidney stones - it was found that people who exercise regularly have up to 30% lower risk of developing the condition. Obesity is linked to stone formation so it is essential to maintain a healthy weight. People with calcium stones believe they should avoid eating calcium, however low calcium diets may actually increase your kidney stone risk. Dietary salt causes high urine calcium, which leads to kidney stones. The main source of salt in diet comes from processed and canned food.

Oxalate is another component that binds to calcium to form kidney stones. Foods high in oxalate include; spinach, chocolate, sweet potato, coffee, beetroot, nuts, rhubarb, and wheat bran. Limiting oxalate-rich foods may help prevent the stones from forming. Oxalate and calcium bind together in the digestive tract before reaching the kidneys, so it’s harder for stones to form if you eat high-oxalate foods and calcium-rich foods at the same time. Additionally, eating less animal protein and more fruits and vegetables will decrease urine acidity which will help to reduce stone formation.

THE MAGNIFICENT SOUTH WEST OZ Perth and South West Australia have the shortest travelling time from the UK, and with Qantas starting a direct flight from Heathrow to Perth from the Spring of 2018, it is about to become even quicker, with a flying time of just 18 hours. Despite being the nearest gateway to Australia, the popularity of the South West as a tourist destination has never matched up to its East Coast neighbours. This is mainly because it does not boast icons such as the Sydney Opera House and Bridge or the Great Barrier Reef of Queensland. But the fact that it is so isolated and that it is a whole 6 hours shorter in travelling time is reason enough to look at South West Australia as a standalone holiday, rather than an add on to an East Coast itinerary. It may not have the famous Aussie landmarks but it more than makes up for this in it coastal scenery, abundant wildlife, mesmerising Karri forests and some of best food and wine on the planet. Of course, the happy and positive “can do” attitude of the Australian people is what makes holidays in Australia such a fantastic experience.

yourself at the northern end of the Margaret River, with over 160 wineries in the region, taking a wine tour is a must. Also make sure you find the time to visit one of the region’s lighthouses and many of the impressive and colourful caves. An hour further south and you are in the far south west corner of Australia where you can enjoy the rugged coastal scenery at Augusta Lighthouse and take a photo of where the Southern and Indian Oceans collide. Next stop is Walpole, the striking coastline of the Southern Forests stretches across 140 km, where beautiful Karri forests sit atop rocky cliffs, and beautiful white sandy beaches are pounded by the wild Southern Ocean. Visit the Valley of Giants Treetop walk and take the Walpole Wilderness Cruise, a half day cruise like no other.

Perth is a great city to start your holiday. Kings Park is larger than New York’s Central Park and the Swan River offers a fantastic way to see the city skyline with a twilight cruise to watch the sun go down.

This is just a small sample of what the South West has to offer. If you have time you should visit Wave Rock and definitely end your holiday in Fremantle where you can take a ferry to Rottnest Island to visit the Quokka’s and enjoy a ghost tour of Fremantle prison.

From Perth, you head south, with many opportunities to stop and explore, including Bunbury Dolphin Discovery Centre where you can learn about dolphins and take a cruise out to meet them. Further stops include Rockingham to visit the little Penguins and Mandurah for a cruise around the manmade canals. Then, you will find

health & exercise Everyone has read articles or watched programmes on their Tv about the benefits of exercise and a healthy balanced diet. Exercise can take many forms, it’s not all red-faced sweaty people pumping iron or pounding the treadmill down the gym. There are many different things you can do to help keep you and your heart in good shape, and it needn’t hit you hard in the pocket. The secret to a lasting exercise regime is to first find something you like doing, you are far more likely to stick to if you enjoy it, it’s all too easy to go full steam ahead with an exercise programme that you don’t really like and that will increase the chances of you giving up. Of course, the exercise needs to be backed up with a sensible diet, nobody is saying only eat vegetables

DIVE INTO THE OCEAN FILM FESTIVAL WORLD TOUR

Diver Kimi Werner by Perrin James

The Ocean Film Festival World Tour is returning to the UK this autumn, bringing an evening of inspirational and jaw-dropping ocean films. The event, which originates in Australia, features a brand-new selection of the world’s best ocean-themed short films, with action and spellbinding footage from both above and below the water’s surface. The 2017 film programme sees intrepid freedivers explore haunting shipwrecks, nomadic sailors face the icy waters of Antarctica, and features awe-inspiring marine life such as humpback wales and the endangered Giant Pacific Mantaray. Highlights from the 2017 Ocean Film Tour include: Sea Gypsies Infinity and her crew are about to embark on an extraordinary voyage: 8,000 miles from New Zealand to Patagonia, taking in the intimidating iceberg-strewn waters of Antarctica along the way. Whale Catchers High on the rugged cliffs above New Zealand’s 28

Cook Strait sits an unusual group of ‘citizen scientists.’ This motley collection of men in their 70s and 80s are keeping watch for humpback whales as part of the Cook Strait Whale Count – a study into the recovery of New Zealand’s humpback population since the end of New Zealand whaling in 1964. Fish People To some, the ocean is a fearsome and dangerous place. But to others, it’s a limitless world of fun, freedom and opportunity where life can be lived to the full. From surfers and spearfishers to a former coal miner and a group of at-risk kids in San Francisco, Fish People a film about the transformative effects of time spent in the ocean and how we can leave our limitations behind to find deeper meaning in the saltwater wilderness that lies just beyond the shore. The tour will be calling in at The Kings Theatre in Potsmouth on October 4. To find out more about the festival, watch the trailer and book tickets, visit www.oceanfilmfestival.co.uk.

The Great Brick Safari: An Interactive Experience Marwell Wildlife is to become the first UK zoo to host a collection of giant LEGO brick animals. This summer over 80 sculptures, representing 25 different species, will be installed at the Hampshire attraction, offering an exciting and unique trail to connect children with nature. Over 2 million bricks will be used to make the sculptures, which are being created by Bordonbased LEGO building company Bright Bricks. Among them will be a 1.5 tonne elephant, a life size Bengal tiger and a trio of Giant panda cubs. Other sculptures will be inspired by Marwell’s own diverse collection of animals, with a red ruffed lemur, a warthog and a mob of meerkats all featuring on the trail.

James Cretney, Chief Executive of Marwell Wildlife said: “We are delighted to be the first zoo in the UK to host an interactive LEGO brick experience. We know our guests both old and young are going to absolutely love the trail.” LEGO fans of all ages will also be able to try their hands at making their own animal sculptures in the LEGO brick play area. The Great Brick Safari will be included with general admission to Marwell Zoo and runs until 1 October.

DEMENTIA FRIENDLY GYMNASTICS ACHIEVES REMARKABLE RESULTS

A report recently published shows a new chairbased gymnastics exercise programme has significant benefits for those living with dementia. The research, conducted by Age UK on behalf of the British Gymnastics Foundation, found the programme to have benefits in the physical, emotional and cognitive aspects of older people, and people with mild to advanced forms of dementia appearing to benefit the most. The Love to Move programme, created by the British Gymnastics Foundation, is aimed at getting older people moving and functioning better, with a view to improving the lives of those living with dementia.

If someone close to you is living with dementia, you will naturally want to do everything you can to help them to enjoy life as much as possible. 32

An exercise booklet is available, to buy or download, which will help you try the Love to Move programme in your own home with your loved ones. Booklets can be bought by calling 0345 1297129 Ext. 2315 or you can download a copy for free on their website britishgymnasticsfoundation.org/lovetomove.

FESTIVAL FUN The summer doesn’t have long left now, so make the most of the outdoor life and take advantage of one of the super music festivals in the area. These are three of the best we can personally vouch for.

GRAZE FESTIVAL 27 Aug, Twyford

A one-day family festival in its third year.

Headlining the event will be one of Britain’s most successful hip hop acts, Stereo MC’s. They are known for their enthusiasm on stage and have created over ten full albums with major singles hits like “Step it Up”.

The festival will also welcome fellow headliners Republica, and third on the bill will be Twyford’s favourite funk/soul outfit, Agency. In total there are twelve different acts on the two main stages, with extra entertainment on the dedicated Kids’ Stage. Lunch is taken care of with nine unique food and drink stalls, including Twyford’s own The Bugle.

Last year over £10,000 was raised for local charities, and this year the organisers are determined to top that figure. Grazefestival.co.uk

VICTORIOUS

25-27 Aug, Southsea Victorious is unique in its truly universal appeal. It has a dedicated entertainment area for children, Rita Ora, Olly Murs, Lady Leshurr and Tom Grennan for the teens and Madness, Stereophonics, Elbow and Franz Ferdinand for the ‘nonteens’. The line-up is huge though – there’s something playing all the time.

Being a flat site it’s good for both buggies and wheelchairs. Well priced day tickets (adults from £35, age 5-15 £8) and a good train service to Southsea, well what’s not to like? victoriousfestival.co.uk

BESTIVAL

7-10 September, Lulworth, Dorset Bestival is the last ‘big one’ of the year, and it certainly sees the season out in style. Formerly held on the Isle of Wight, this year it has moved to the grounds of the beautiful Lulworth Castle in Dorset, just over an hour away.

The line-up really does offer something for every music taste and includes Pet Shop Boys, Rag’n’Bone Man, The XX, Blossoms, Laura Mvula and Dizzee Rascal! And you are guaranteed to see every age at the Purple Rave, playing the music of the late great Prince.

But Bestival is so much more than just the music. Food and drink receive special attention including a WI tea tent! There’s also a programme of healthy pursuits from wild runs, spin class raving and euphoric yoga, to relaxing hot tubs. Weather of course is not guaranteed, but September does seem to be more settled and having the opportunity to be outside enjoying the last of the summer rays is just glorious. See you there! FOOD INTOLERANCES AND ALLERGIES? HELP IS HERE! A local technology company, based in Meon Valley has just launched a phone app addressing the may have a profound impact on the health of people suffering from food allergies, intolerances, and medical conditions in the UK. FoodAdvisr allows users to make informed choices about what they eat, based on their personal needs and likes, by simply scanning the barcode on any food or drink product, or browsing the menu of participating restaurants. There are many attractions in the area which will come to mind when planning what to do during the summer. However some need a little more thought, especially if you are watching your budget. All these are low cost or free days out. Imagine you are a millionaire: Northington Grange is the foremost example of the Greek Revival style in England, built between 1804 and 1809. It is free, and a great place for imagining yourself as Lord or Lady of the Manor. This is a lovely picnic spot too. www.englishheritage.co.uk and search for Northington. Imagine you are an art critic: The grounds of Hillier Gardens (near Romsey) make an interesting walk at any time of the year, but in the summer they have an annual exhibition of Art in the Garden. www.hilliergardens.org.uk Imagine you are a child: With a signal box and station, track running through tunnels, over and under bridges, round curves and changing gradients, the miniature railway provides a fun ride for children and adults. Eastleigh Lakeside Railway, Royal Victoria Country Park, Moors Valley Railway, Exbury Gardens Railway and Bankside Miniature Railway. Imagine you are a wildlife expert: Enjoy a date with nature at the Reptile Centre, 38

with fun activities for the whole family. Quiz trail and ‘making’ activities for children. Come and see the ‘live’ video of birds on their nests as well as the reptiles and amphibians. For more information 0300 067 4601. There is no charge for this event. Just turn up between 10.30am and 4pm. New Forest Reptile Centre, SO43 7GR Wed 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 Aug. www.forestry.gov.uk and search for the centre For more nature trails look no further than the Wildlife and Butterfly Walk at Southampton Common. Learn about all the species of butterflies and moths that are in the UK. The walks start just inside the main gates at the end of Cemetery Road where parking is available. The walks and events are all free but any donations would be much appreciated. Bookings - 07538 888 655. Imagine you are on holiday: The land in the New Forest is quite unlike anywhere else in the county and once you are in there it feels like you are on holiday. You can take a long walk or to see more take bikes with you. Take a picnic and drinking water. Imagine you are a golf professional: If you’ve never played the game and wouldn’t dream of going onto a main course you can still have the chance to swing a club. Go down to the mini golf at Andrews East Park, Southampton, it is around £2.50 per person and it is an 18 hole course. For more information call 02380 833000.

Take to the skies Formed in 2000, the Solent Aviation Art Society (SAAS) exists to increase the appreciation and interest of the art. Originally SAAS met at the Solent Sky museum in Southampton but subsequently expanded its programme to include visits to aviation venues. In an exciting new development, SAAS’s programme has recently further diversified with a series of painting workshops planned. The first group of these is being held on the second Wednesday of every month in the Community Space, a large room within Tesco at Fareham. The group welcomes all artists who have an interest in aviation art.

STICKY BARBECUE CHICKEN WINGS Chicken wings are a great budget buy and perfect for a TV dinner or speedy supper. Serve with a home-made coleslaw or rice salad for a more substantial meal. Serves 4 Ready in 50 minutes INGREDIENTS 1 kg chicken wings 8tbsp tomato ketchup 2tbsp Worcestershire sauce 3tbsp smooth mango chutney 2tsp Dijon mustard 1tbsp sunflower oil FOR THE DIP 150ml soured cream 2 spring onions, trimmed and finely chopped 1tbsp fresh snipped chives TIP You can cook the wings on a hot barbecue for an al fresco supper. It’s best to cook them in the oven for the first 15 minutes then glaze and just place them on the barbecue for the last 15-20 minutes of cooking time. 44

1. Preheat the oven to 200C, 180 fan, gas 6. Place the wings on a metal rack set over a roasting tin and roast in the preheated oven for 15 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, make the sticky glaze by mixing together the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, mango chutney, mustard and oil in a small bowl. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 3. Remove the roasting tin from the oven and liberally brush the glaze all over the chicken wings. 4. Return the roasting tin to the oven and roast the wings for a further 15-20 minutes until the wings are golden brown and slightly charred in places. 5. Mix together the dip ingredients in a small bowl. Serve with the chicken wings.

And Another Thing...

Tom and the exotic trip

by Tom Hughes

After yet another day at the coalface, it was time to plonk myself down in front of the tube with my standard issue tea and biccies. Eschewing Bradley Walsh’s faux hilarity, I flicked over to observe another presenter’s plummy commiserations with a pair of unlucky celebrities. “Alexander Armstrong has a way with people, don’t you think?” I glanced over at Sarah (My Dearly Beloved) who was busily ensconced in a pile of glossy magazines. Immediately, my blood froze. My wife was ‘browsing for ideas’, a catchall phrase that indicated she was on the hunt for a walletsqueezing Big Ticket Item. Without looking up Sarah said, “That’s right Tom, I’m choosing a last minute holiday. What are you doing with the remote?” “I’m trying to find Ceefax.”

“Ceefax? Tom, in case you hadn’t noticed this isn’t 1994. I’ve heard Hurghada is nice.” “Is that in Wales?” I asked hopefully.

And so the following morning we trundled down the precinct to the local travel agent. Once through the glass doors Sarah searched for a representative whilst I sniffed the air. “What’s that funny smell?” “Coconut sunscreen. It’s to put you in the holiday mood.” “It smells like a massage parlour.” “And how would you know?” A change of subject being required, I made eye contact with a lady sporting an azure blue uniform. I plonked myself down and, fingering the reams of brochures, gasped, “Take me away from all of this madness.” Nonplussed, the woman turned to Sarah for help. “Ignore my husband, he is a child. We are after a week or ten day break. Don’t care where, as long as it’s hot.” “Europe, or further afield?”

“Don’t mind.”

“Well, we have some great deals at the moment for Vietnam.”

I gripped Sarah’s arm. “Honey, I ain’t going back to Vietnam - you weren’t there man.” Another puzzled look. Sighing, Sarah pressed onwards. “How about Cancun? I hear it’s very nice.”

“Yes, we have some excellent deals for Mexico.”

whisked us away to another equally exotic continent - we were about to embark upon an imaginary trip to the Nile Delta. “Now, what about Egypt?” My mind raced to a balmy evening standing awestruck in the Valley of the Kings.

“And this resort is also all-inclusive - so you get your breakfast, dinner and evening meal all from the same place. And the compound is fully secure with armed guards on all the gates.”

“Do you do bed and breakfast?” A kick from Sarah.

“That sounds just like the place where Uncle Billy spent that fortnight.”

“Which means?”

“No, Strangeways. He’d refused to pay his council tax.”

“Bed and breakfast? In Mexico? No sir, it’s usually all-inclusive.”

“Everything is pre-paid, so all your food and drink is included. And your entertainment. Now this resort I can vouch for, I went last year. I had such a laugh - the barman was pouring us shots all night and then we saw a fantastic Rod Stewart.” Without so much as a glance in the direction of yours truly, Sarah, in an exasperated tone, said, “No, that won’t be suitable.” Undeterred, our azure blue travel counsellor

“Where was that, sir? Hurghada?”

Sarah intervened. “Look, this is getting us nowhere. We just want somewhere warm, inexpensive and easy to get to.”

Seizing my opportunity I announced, “Well why didn’t you say darling? Come with me!” Two days later we were packed and ready to go. The hand luggage safely in the boot of the Mondeo, a less than impressed Sarah sat sulking in the passenger seat.

The Life List

Progressive Proverbs Worldly wisdom may seem timeless, but sometimes our conclusions are out of date. For example, chickens can be counted before they’re hatched now - by using a UV light. And that’s not all that has changed... Nothing good ever came out of a windowed envelope. A broken clock is right twice a day, unless it’s digital. You automatically forget your number plate as soon as you reach the car park ticket machine. If you want to find something try looking for something else.

A watched pot is a poor use of a webcam. A text in time saves minutes on a pointless call. Look after the pennies...because they’re the only interest available on your savings. The squeaky wheel...will be on your supermarket trolley. Two wrongs...is about right. When in Rome, expect the ice cream to be both delicious and expensive. The pen is mightier than the broken pencil, but not as satisfying to chew. Keep your friends close...and your pretend friends on social media. You can’t judge a book by its cover, or trust the objectivity of its online reviews.
