WOMEN URGED TO HARNESS FIGHTING SPIRIT AND RACE FOR LIFE WOMEN inspired by the heroic effort of marathon runners in Southampton and London last month are being urged to take on their own fitness challenge by entering Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life. Unlike the marathons, women taking part in Race for Life in the county don’t need to pound the pavements or sprint to the finish line - because they can do the 5k, 10k or Pretty Muddy events at their own pace. It’s not about being fit or fast, it’s the taking part that counts. In Hampshire, women of all ages and abilities can take part in Race for Life at on the weekend of July 1 and 2. Salisbury’s Race for Life event also takes place on Sunday July 9. And for those who want to push themselves further, but still within a supportive atmosphere, there’s the opportunity to enter Race for Life’s women-only full and half marathon events. Georgina Horne, Cancer Research UK’s Event Manager in Hampshire, said many would have been motivated by the inspirational stories and unstoppable spirit of the participants of last month’s marathon events. 2

She said: “We’re encouraging women to harness that fighting spirit and take on their own fitness challenge by signing up to Race for Life. “Women of all shapes, sizes, ages and abilities can take part - there’s a Race for Life event to suit everyone. Whether they’re planning a 5k amble with friends, a 10k jog or the challenge of a full or half marathon, it’s not about being first to the finish line; it’s about coming together to beat cancer sooner.” To enter Race for Life today visit www.raceforlife.org or call 0300 123 0770.

Editor’s Letter

WHEN I WAS YOUNG When I was young, and for many of you this will resonate, my sister and I would spend our school holidays playing with friends, roaming the woods and playgrounds, out the door after breakfast, dashing back at lunchtime for sustenance only to return in time for tea. We didn’t have mobile phones to be checked up on and felt quite safe – and it cost my parents nothing except a higher consumption of washing powder! To meet this change of kidcare culture over the years there is a plethora of entertainment, clubs, classes and events to choose from. We’ve included as many as we have room for (see What’s on pages 6 and 7) and the article Use Your Imagination (p30) gives ideas for free activities. A day out On

the Water (p34) rounds up where you can go to make the most of our magnificent coastline, rivers and canals. Love to Move A close relative of mine has been diagnosed with dementia so when a story on tv caught my attention I did a bit of research on the Love to Move programme launched by British Gymnastic Foundation; read more about it on page 36. Next issue will be with you in the autumn so until then enjoy the summer, whatever you get up to!

DEMENTIA FRIENDLY GYMNASTICS ACHIEVES REMARKABLE RESULTS A report recently published shows a new chairbased gymnastics exercise programme has significant benefits for those living with dementia. The research, conducted by Age UK on behalf of the British Gymnastics Foundation, found the programme to have benefits in the physical, emotional and cognitive aspects of older people, and people with mild to advanced forms of dementia appearing to benefit the most.

An exercise booklet is available, to buy or download, which will help you try the Love to Move programme in your own home with your loved ones. Booklets can be bought by calling 0345 1297129 Ext. 2315 or you can download a copy for free on their website britishgymnasticsfoundation.org/lovetomove.

CARING FOR OLDER PEOPLE IN THE HEAT OF SUMMER We all like to make the most of the sunshine in the summer, whether that’s by going for walks, picnics in the park or sitting in the garden with a glass of Pimms. At care homes such as The Fernes in Fareham and Challoner House in Eastleigh, the story is the same, with residents and their guests keen to spend as much time as possible out on the terrace or in the garden. Staff at these homes have seen first-hand the benefits of spending time outside for older people but also know the importance of supporting individuals to keep cool while they enjoy the sunshine and fresh air or take part in outdoor activities. Catherine Bezer, General Manager at The Fernes Care Home in Fareham, said: “Whether in a care home or elsewhere, it’s vital that older people take care in extremely hot temperatures and cover up well when spending time outside.

“It’s essential to keep hydrated with plenty of water or diluted fruit juice and buying a stash of ice lollies to store in the freezer is a good idea too.” Allison Sweetman, General Manager at Challoner House in Eastleigh said: “A good tip for the summertime is to avoid strenuous activities and limit things like housework and gardening to when it’s cool, like early morning or evenings. “At Challoner House, residents love to spend time relaxing in the sunshine with a cool drink and there are some very keen gardeners who help keep everything looking great. As long as you take the right precautions, there is no better way to relax!” You can read more about Challoner House and The Fernes at www.barchester.com or why not pay them a visit to take a look at their beautiful outdoor spaces and enjoy a cool drink and a chat with friendly staff. 13

HEALTH & EXERCISE Everyone has read articles or watched programmes on their Tv about the benefits of exercise and a healthy balanced diet. Exercise can take many forms, it’s not all red-faced sweaty people pumping iron or pounding the treadmill down the gym. There are many different things you can do to help keep you and your heart in good shape, and it needn’t hit you hard in the pocket. The secret to a lasting exercise regime is to first find something you like doing, you are far more likely to stick to if you enjoy it, it’s all too easy to go full steam ahead with an exercise programme that you don’t really like and that will increase the chances of you giving up. Of course, the exercise needs to be backed up with a sensible diet, nobody is saying only eat vegetables and salads all the time, but a good rule of thumb is ‘everything in moderation’. By all means, have treats and takeaways, just remember in between those naughty moments try to eat a balanced diet consisting of the five food groups.

SUMMER SAFE... The only hot dogs in summer should be those on the BBQ... but how many times do you still see or hear of a dog locked in a car on a hot summer’s day? When the core body temperature of any mammal or bird is raised above its normal range then hyperthermia occurs, otherwise known as heatstroke; the result is heat damage to the animal or bird’s body tissue. Allowing your animal to overheat is very serious indeed, animals can and do die of multiple organ failure if treatment is not administered swiftly. Provide your pets with cool, shady areas to escape to, and move hutches to the shade too; hutches and aviaries become ovens in the heat just like cars do. I repeat again dogs die in hot cars, they pant to cool down, add excessive heat and your dog is in danger of heat stroke in a very short period of time.

16

Exercise dogs early in the morning or later in the evening when it is cooler and try to avoid walking on hot surfaces, if you find a surface too hot to walk on then your dog certainly will. Panting increases in intensity as heatstroke progresses, salivation, restlessness, increased heart rate and difficulty breathing are all signs to look for. Heatstroke is life threatening and requires veterinary attention. An emergency vet will attempt to cool your dog down using water and fans, intravenous fluids for rehydration and medication as required. He will take blood samples to test for organ failure and act accordingly; monitoring closely until the dog is settled is paramount. Heathside Veterinary Surgery 01489 607001.

“Dear Doctor” I am flying to the USA for my holiday and am worried about my risk of DVT. Can I prevent DVT? DVT (deep vein thrombosis) is a serious condition where a clot has formed in the main (deep) veins of the leg. It is dangerous because it can break away and block essential blood flow to the lungs. It can also damage the non-return valves in the leg veins, leading to skin thickening and ulceration in the future. DVT can however, be prevented. People at especially high risk may be prescribed drugs to lower the blood’s ability to clot (anticoagulants), but for most people some simple measures will prevent this (thankfully) rare but important problem.

• Cancer • Obesity

Carports & Canopies Nationwide Supplier Based outside Romsey • Quality Materials • No rotting or rusting • All weather protection from rain, wind and snow • Easy access

• Recent surgery (especially general anaesthetic and abdominal/pelvic surgery) • Pregnancy • Reduced mobility • Heart failure Your doctor or surgeon can advise if you need drug treatment for your journey or if it is advisable not to fly. For most people though, the use of knee length graduated compression stockings will improve the flow of blood in the veins, minimising the risk of DVT and leg swelling. It can also help to exercise the ankles whilst sitting to improve blood flow and keep hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Alcohol avoidance and the use of aspirin have not been shown to significantly reduce DVT risk. These simple measures will enable you to fully enjoy your holiday without worrying about DVT of the legs.

A WORLD WITHOUT WIRES The best way to get wireless Wi-Fi at home or on the go If you go out and about this year, you’re in for a happy surprise: You don’t need to be travelling far from home to get free Wi-Fi. Many UK towns and cities have free Wi-Fi schemes - and most casual eating and coffee chains usually offer some form of free internet access. Just watch what you’re signing up for: such public-spirited provision is often there in order to capture valuable marketing data, so keep a close eye on any tick-boxes you’re expected to complete. It’s also a good idea to use a virtual private networking (VPN) service such as Tunnelbear (www.tunnelbear.com) or Windscribe (www.windscribe.com) to keep your connection private if you intend to use public Wi-Fi services. You never know who’s looking in.

1 22

If you’re staying at home and just want to get better reception around the house or in the garden, there are several ways to make your Wi-Fi work harder. The first, cheapest and simplest thing to do to improve

2

your Wi-Fi connection is to move the router: ideally it should be higher than your furniture and obstacles such as radiators, which are hard for the radio waves to pass through. If your wireless router is getting on a bit it’s probably stuck with older, slow Wi-Fi technology, so if you can stretch to an 802.11ac wireless router you’ll notice a huge difference in speed and range - provided 3 of course your laptop, tablet or smartphone has the same Wi-Fi support. If the speed is fine but the signal just doesn’t go far enough, a Wi-Fi extender may be just the trick: it connects to the network and throws the signal further, so for example you might extend your home Wi-Fi network to the garden or patio. It isn’t expensive or difficult, either: good Wi-Fi extenders are available for less than £40 and take seconds to set up. 1. Netgear Nighthawk 802.11ac router. 2. Wi-Fi dongle to upgrade PC’s wireless. 3. D-Link Wi-Fi extender.

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company

policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Locks Heath

area and manager Justin Friel agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be

SUMMER OF FUN From family-friendly festivals to wet weather fun, we’ve plenty of ideas to keep the kids entertained this summer. Back to nature Fly a kite, go geocaching, build a den, explore a new trail – you don’t have to travel far or spend a lot of money to have fun outdoors. If you need some inspiration, try The National Trust’s 50 things to do before you’re 11 ¾ list, which is available as a free app, a printed leaflet, or a PDF. The app is particularly appealing for tech-savvy kids, as it lets them record their activities and earn printable certificates. Activities range from bug hunting and playing pooh sticks to canoeing, rock climbing and orienteering. Festivals Festival season isn’t just for the grown-ups – there are plenty of family-friendly festivals to choose from, including: • Suffolk’s Latitude Festival has its own family campsite and kids’ area. Children can enjoy a whole host of activities, from pizza making to 24

weird science. There are live shows for children of all ages, a kids’ disco, and plenty of music to dance along to. • At Camp Bestival children can learn circus tricks, be entertained by Mister Maker, Mr Tumble and Dick & Dom, jump on the world’s biggest bouncy castle, and lots more. • Cheshire’s Just So festival is specifically aimed at children and offers a ‘magical experience where art, music and literature are embedded and entwined in a beautiful and wondrous landscape.’ There’s everything from baby yoga and storytelling to dance workshops, live shows and a jelly fight! • Chagstock is rather smaller than Latitude or Bestival, but offers great value for money. An adult weekend ticket is £90, including camping, and under-12s go free. There’s a family camping area, play area, bouncy castle and various activities.

Learning through play The summer holidays are not the time to worry about spelling tests and practice papers. However, that doesn’t mean that your child can’t have fun learning a new skill, whether it’s sewing, baking or climbing trees. Many children struggle with learning how to tell the time. If yours is one of them, a Twistiti watch might help them master that particular skill this summer. Hours and minutes are brightly coloured and easy to read. There are also lots of interchangeable straps to choose from, including camouflage, animal print and stripes. Our eight year old tester said the watch made it much easier for her to work out the time, see www.twistiti.com.

Kidzone

Wet days at home The British weather being what it is, there are likely to be some rainy days this summer. It can help to have some plans up your sleeve, so here are a few ideas: • Build a den inside. A couple of chairs or a table, a few old sheets or blankets, and a washing line with pegs are all you need. Use the den for family board games, picnics and teddy bear tea parties. • Have a treasure hunt, with a series of clues, or a scavenger hunt to find mini prizes or chocolate coins. • Make some puppets out of old socks, cardboard boxes or wooden spoons; write a play and put on a performance for other members of the family. • If you just can’t tear them away from their screens, have a pyjama party. Add pizza, popcorn and playmates and you should be able to hide out in another room for at least an hour’s peace and quiet. By Kate Duggan

BEWARE OF TICKS WHEN WALKING YOUR DOG Ticks pose a serious health risk to your dog during the summer and early autumn months, particularly if you take them for walks through bracken and heather. If your dog has a long coat, a tick will barely be noticeable on the skin, so it’s important that you physically check their body when you finish your walk. What does a tick look like? Ticks are tiny spider-like creatures that attach themselves to a ‘host,’ and feed on their blood. Once they start to feed, the tick increases in size and becomes more noticeable to the human eye. Although it’s tempting to pull a tick from your dog, part of it is likely to remain under their skin which can have serious health consequences in the months that follow. You can buy a dedicated tick remover from your local pet shop or veterinary practice. Although other methods of removing ticks exist, tick removers allow you to twist and pull the tick from your dog, bringing the entire body away. Why are ticks dangerous to your pet? Ticks cause Lyme disease, or Lyme borreliosis, in dogs, but signs of illness don’t commonly appear until several months after they have been bitten. Symptoms include: • High fever. • Loss of appetite. • Swelling of the joints. • Swollen lymph nodes. • Lethargy. Once diagnosed, a prolonged course of antibiotics can be used to fight the infection, but some dogs may continue to experience recurring symptoms throughout their life. 26

USE YOUR IMAGINATION British Adder snake

There are many attractions in the area which will come to mind when planning what to do during the summer. However some need a little more thought, especially if you are watching your budget. All these are low cost or free days out. Imagine you are a millionaire: Northington Grange is the foremost example of the Greek Revival style in England, built between 1804 and 1809. It is free, and a great place for imagining yourself as Lord or Lady of the Manor. This is a lovely picnic spot too. www.englishheritage.co.uk and search for Northington. Imagine you are an art critic: The grounds of Hillier Gardens (near Romsey) make an interesting walk at any time of the year, but in the summer they have an annual exhibition of Art in the Garden. www.hilliergardens.org.uk Imagine you are a child: With a signal box and station and a dual track running through tunnels, over and under bridges, round curves and changing gradients the miniature railway provides a fun ride for children and adults. Imagine you are a wildlife expert: Enjoy a date with nature at the Reptile Centre, with fun activities for the whole family. Quiz trail and ‘making’ activities for children. Come and see 30

the ‘live’ video of birds on their nests as well as the reptiles and amphibians. For more information 0300 067 4601. There is no charge for this event. Just turn up between 10.30am and 4pm. New Forest Reptile Centre, SO43 7GR Wed 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 Aug. www.forestry.gov.uk and search for the centre For more nature trails look no further than the Wildlife and Butterfly Walk at Southampton Common. Learn about all the species of butterflies and moths that are in the UK. The walks start just inside the main gates at the end of Cemetery Road where parking is available. The walks and events are all free but any donations would be much appreciated. Bookings - 07538 888 655. Imagine you are on holiday: The land in the New Forest is quite unlike anywhere else in the county and once you are in there it feels like you are on holiday. You can take a long walk or to see more take bikes with you. Take a picnic and drinking water. Imagine you are a golf professional: If you’ve never played the game and wouldn’t dream of going onto a main course you can still have the chance to swing a club. Go down to the mini golf at Andrews East Park, Southampton, it is around £2.50 per person and it is an 18 hole course. For more information call 02380 833000.

STICKY BARBECUE CHICKEN WINGS Chicken wings are a great budget buy and perfect for a TV dinner or speedy supper. Serve with a home-made coleslaw or rice salad for a more substantial meal. SERVES 4 READY IN 50 minutes INGREDIENTS 1 kg chicken wings 8tbsp tomato ketchup 2tbsp Worcestershire sauce 3tbsp smooth mango chutney 2tsp Dijon mustard 1tbsp sunflower oil FOR THE DIP 150ml soured cream 2 spring onions, trimmed and finely chopped 1tbsp fresh snipped chives TIP You can cook the wings on a hot barbecue for an al fresco supper. SOUTHAMPTON MELA FESTIVAL On Saturday 15 July Southampton’s biggest free family festival is back. The Southampton Mela Festival will fill Hoglands Park with music, dance and family activities from around the world. It is a long-standing summer highlight in Southampton’s events calendar. Now in its 16th year it is estimated to attract 20,000 people from along the South coast. Vinod Desai MBE, Southampton Mela Programmer and Art Asia Chief Executive said: “The Southampton Mela Festival has built a reputation as a great free family day out with plenty of entertainment and activities for young and old. We create memorable performances, the people create a memorable atmosphere - it is a very special day”. Each year organisers, Art Asia, bring new international acts and artists from across the globe as well as firm favourites like Bollywood, Bhangra, Qwaail, Flamenco, World and Fusion music and dance. The festival starts at 12pm and finishes 9pm. For more information visit www.southamptonmela.com. 38
