We put a lot of effort in to finding what community news we can, researching the events listings, and working with our advertisers, without whom we wouldn’t have a magazine at all. staying connected to loved ones Losing someone close to you is never easy – but even more so when it is your mum or dad who passes away. Your parents are hugely important figures in your life and the loss of such a source of love, wisdom, experience and support can knock you for six. For those struggling to deal with grief, it can help to have the physical focus of a place where they feel close to their loved one, and this is a phenomenon that the team at Portchester Memorial Gardens has seen repeatedly. Explains Claire from Park Gate: “I miss my mum so much since she passed away three years ago, and it’s especially hard on her birthday and Mothers’ Day. It really helps to visit her plot, place flowers on her memorial and take a few moments in these

beautiful surroundings to feel that she’s still an important part of the family.” Memorials can be placed in a variety of themed areas which have been cultivated to offer yearround beauty within tranquil grounds – including the Garden of Peace with its restful ponds, and the Hill of Roses, flooded with summer scent and colour. The sympathetic team at the family-run Portchester Memorial Gardens are experienced in helping families lay their loved ones’ ashes to rest, so to discuss your requirements, call 01329 828250.

A Place of Peace, a Garden to Remember

Lay your loved one’s ashes to rest in your chosen plot in a beautiful, family-owned garden, complete with personalised memorial. Sympathetic staff will help you find the perfect final resting place in this award-winning, tranquil setting, from the reflective Garden of Peace or fragrant Hill of Roses to the sheltered Garden of the Sea or Summerhouse View vistas. “A massive thank you – you have made such a sad time easier to manage, knowing that my beloved is surrounded by such beauty and is taken good care of.” CH, Southsea

MAN’S BEST FRIEND By Catherine Rose The domestic dog (canis familiaris) has been around for almost 20 thousand years. Despite much speculation, modern research has concluded that all dogs are descended from the grey wolf (canis lupus), although it is difficult to see what some of today’s diverse breeds have in common with them. In the 1960s, ethologist John Scott studied and compared the behaviour of wolves and dogs. He concluded that the latter exhibited 71 out of a total of 90 similar lupine behaviours, laying to rest questions about the origin of one of our favourite pets. Today’s domestic dog is the most varied mammal on earth in terms of shape, size and behaviour. The oldest dog remains have been uncovered at a Palaeolithic site close to the Ukraine. They date back 19 thousand years, the skulls resembling those of modern Siberian huskies. Another Palaeolithic tomb excavated in Israel contained the skeletons of a man and his dog who had been buried together, the man’s hand touchingly resting on the dog’s flank and demonstrating the bond in life between the two. Like man, wolves are sociable pack animals who accept the authority of a group leader. This made them readily adaptable to human leadership, being naturally loyal and able to obey the rules of their pack. Scientists believe that our huntergatherer forefathers took grey wolf puppies from the wild, taming and interbreeding them to have traits according to the needs of their owners – from being hunting companions to helping herd livestock. 14

Grey Wolf (canis lupus) at the UK Wolf Conservation Trust

This selective breeding meant that some dogs developed an acute sense of smell, hearing or vision, while others developed speed and stamina, or guarding, hunting and retrieving skills. These traits evolved over thousands of years to produce diverse canine types that were then bred within those types to evolve into the domestic dog breeds we have today. We know from murals that dogs were kept by the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. Chinese emperors lavished so much care on their canine companions that they were even said to have their own servants. In Europe, owning a dog gained popularity from the 13th century onwards, and during the Middle Ages it became a status symbol. Dogs were referred to as ‘hounds’ (from the Old English word ‘hund’). Selective breeding increased during this era but the term ‘hound’ went on to become a specific canine type with long ears and an acute sense of smell. ‘Dog’ subsequently came into common use to refer to them all. Across the globe, selective breeding according to environment and need continued to produce distinct differences in dogs’ appearance, and breeds with recognisable traits emerged. For example, some dogs were bred to have a longer snout or ears, others to have lighter coloured or longer fur. Today, there are two types of dog coat: the double, originating from wolves and more suited to colder

climates, comprising both coarse ‘guard’ hair and a softer downy fur (such as that in golden retrievers for example), and the single which consists only of a topcoat. Dogs were still largely kept for purpose rather than pleasure until the mid-19th century, when the Victorians made family pet-owning a soughtafter social practice. With it came organised dog shows and the birth of the Kennel Club in 1873 to differentiate between and regulate ‘pure’ or pedigree breeds. Dogs outside of these specialisations came to be known as mixed breed or mongrels. The first Crufts was held in 1891. Unfortunately, with its move away from natural selection, pedigree breeding has resulted in genetic weaknesses within certain dog types. Tail docking – a practice begun to prevent injury and prevalent during the Georgian era following a tax on working dogs – also became a desirable aesthetic trait for specific breeds. In more recent years, docking has attracted controversy and, although still practised, is now often considered unnecessary.

Another topic that has also caused global controversy in recent years is the traditional Asian custom of eating dog meat, often killed inhumanely, which seems horrific to the many people who see dogs as companions, pets and helpers. Different dog breeds differ widely in their life spans. Larger dogs tend to be shorter lived: Great Danes, for example, typically only survive eight years. The breed with the shortest lifespan - around five years - is said to be the Dogue de Bordeaux, while the longest-lived breeds are Toy Poodles and Border terriers, both of which can survive for up to 15 years.

Are youR pets protected? “Pets at risk as vaccinations decline”, “Herd Immunity at Risk Due to Vaccination Fall”, “Vet Raises Fears of ‘Really Severe’ Parvovirus Strain”, these are just some of the headlines from industry journals reflecting on the results from this year’s PDSA Animal Wellbeing (PAW) report that the numbers of pets vaccinated in 2017 has declined dramatically. The annual report provides analysis on the welfare and wellbeing of pets in the UK and the figures on vaccinations are ‘troubling’ according to the charity and judging by the headlines above our vets are concerned too. Why is it only 66% of owners have their pets protected by annual boosters? Many cat and dog owners believed vaccination was not necessary.

It is believed the findings indicate a real lack of understanding of the diseases people’s pets could catch if not protected. The PDSA’s response is to campaign to encourage owners to vaccinate annually against these ‘deadly preventable diseases’, using the slogan ‘Spread the word, not the disease’. Are your pets up to date with their vaccinations? Call now on 01489 607001... help spread the word, not the disease... Danielle Giles Heathside Veterinary Surgery

The Rotary scheme, started in 1946, aims to foster peace through understanding of other cultures. Megan Seaman has been selected from over 200 applicants, to attend the Georgia Rotary Student Programme. Meg will be studying finance as her major subject, but hopes to do classes in North American culture and history. She will be living in halls on campus with an American roommate and hopes to see as much of America as she can whilst there; as well as hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

All this is possible thanks to Bishops Waltham Rotary Club and Winchester Rotary Club for assisting in sponsoring her flights and insurance; as well as five Rotary Clubs in Forsyth County, Georgia, who are funding all her tuition, accommodation on campus, meals and book allowance. Megan is looking forward to spending free weekends seeing as much of the USA as possible; an American Thanksgiving, and a family Christmas with her host family at their home beside a lake near the university.

lions serve up a fine result The Meon Valley Lions Club has presented the Rainbow Centre in Fareham with a £1,000 donation, following their involvement with a highly successful Family Fun Day. The Lions volunteered to deliver the barbeque catering at the centre’s annual Fun-Day event, and sold hundreds of sausages and burgers to raise this grand sum. The Rainbow Centre has been operating for 26 years in Fareham and relies heavily on donations to deliver its Conductive Education programmes for children and adults, from all over Hampshire. The special programmes encourage children and adults to improve mobility and movement in the face of disability caused by cerebral palsy, adult-stroke, brain injury, Parkinson’s disease or similar. 18

Jessica, Amy (Assistant Conductor), Matilda, Lion Roy, Lion Lamar, Skyla, Lion Sheila, Bea (Conductor) and Frankie

Jess Greenwood, Event Fundraiser at the Rainbow Centre said, “Catering for large numbers at the annual fun day is always a challenge, but the Lions’ BBQ food was great quality. They were also very well organised and catered for the large number of visitors with ease.”

Special Feature

wheels

With the New Forest, quiet roads, South Downs National Park and the Isle of Wight on our doorstep the area is a haven for keen cyclists and ideal for family outings on two wheels instead of four. Discover takes a look at cycling in the Solent area. The Benefits of Buying Local It’s possible to spend thousands of pounds on a road or mountain bike so getting it right is important. If you are unsure what to buy then speaking to a knowledgable retailer will be worth it. Even if you know what you want, discussing it with a person equally as passionate about bikes as you are makes the purchase an enjoyable experience. However fit you are or fast you go, being fitted for the right frame is invaluable. A bike fit takes a few hours using specialist equipment. A good fit will prevent lower back pain and improve your speed as you are more aerodynamic, also correct pedal positions means greater power. Online pricing is tough to ignore as is the convenience of home delivery but many stores will price match and deliver for free. And not forgetting that dealing with faulty goods or returns can be a challenge online. A Healthy Start Like opting for the stairs instead of the lift, why not cycle instead of jumping in the car? Riding a bike is fun, healthy and a low-impact form of exercise but be sure the frame is the right geometry to avoid lower back pain. 22

To encourage frequent use, store it somewhere easy to access; avoid struggling to get it out of a cluttered garage or crammed shed! If you’d like to cycle to work ask your company about Cyclescheme worth up to £1,000 of equipment. You pay a monthly ‘salary sacrifice’ to effectively ‘hire’ the bike and kit, over a 12 month period after which you can purchase the bike when the scheme ends, saving between 25% to 39%. Electric Bikes If you like the idea of cycling but dread the thought of struggling up those hills consider an electric bike with battery power when you need it. The options range from ones with a small motor to assist the rider’s pedal-power, to the more powerful e-bikes which are closer to moped-style functionality. All, however, retain the ability to be pedalled by the rider and are therefore not classed as electric motorcycles. They use rechargeable batteries and the lighter bikes can travel up to 20 mph.

Dare to jump at your nearest BMX track! BMX racing made its debut in the 2008 Beijing games. It is now the turn of BMX Freestyle Park now confirmed as a sport in the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. BMX Racing involves sprint races across off-road single-lap race tracks whereas in BMX Freestyle Park the competitors are awarded points based on stunts performed throughout the course. Will we be cheering on a local Olympian in 2020? In 2013 Knightwood Leisure Centre, in Chandlers Ford opened its ÂŁ100,000 purpose built dirt track now home of the Knightwood BMX Club. The Club welcomes riders of all ages and abilities to its training sessions every Saturday from 10am to 1pm and gate practice sessions every Thursday evening 5.30pm to 7.30pm (April until October). Gardening

Houseplants go home Most houseplants need to be just that, plants in houses, but come the summer it usually gives them a real boost to get the higher natural light levels, refreshing (relatively warm) rainfall and seriously fresh air. But now that September is here it is time to bring them indoors – colder nights will cause damage, especially to some of the more tender varieties. Before bringing them in, check your plants over. Use a sharp pair of scissors to remove dead, damaged or dying leaves, cutting back neatly into clean, healthy growth. Next inspect the stems, foliage and any flowers for pests and diseases - it always pays to bring houseplants in totally clean. Look out for white powdery mildew deposits, often accompanied by a bit of leaf yellowing, and check for greyish fuzzy fungal patches caused by the notorious Botrytis or grey mould. Also look for pests like scale insects - tiny brownish elliptical insects which feed beneath leaves or on soft stems, often producing copious quantities of sticky, sugary honeydew - or aphids, which may be found clustered on the more tender, newer growth. These must be dealt with before the plants go indoors, as once inside the pests will flourish in the warmer, more protected conditions, and will soon multiply and may even spread. Most problems like these, if caught early, can be dealt with by using scissors or secateurs to snip off infected areas, or by some careful picking off by hand. If you find scale insects, aphids or fluffy patches of mealy bug, there is a brilliant 28

environmentally-friendly biocontrol that is also safe for you and your pets. For more information, visit www.pippagreenwood.com/products/protectyour-crops. Next, inspect the pots, including the surface of the compost and beneath the base and rim of the pot itself. If you can, and as long as the plant won’t be damaged in the process, gently ease it out of its pot and check the root ball - this is the perfect place for stowaways like vine weevils, slugs and snails. Not the sort of house guests you or your plants would appreciate, I’m sure. When the check over is complete, gently scrape away the uppermost surface of the compost and replace with the same quantity of fresh, similar compost, wipe down the sides of the pot and take your plants inside, taking care not to put them anywhere which is too hot, too dry or too draughty for their liking. Once your old favourites are safely re-installed in their old positions and are free from unwanted guests, you may like to treat yourself to a new houseplant or two. There are some wonderful (and good value) houseplants readily available in garden centres and supermarkets now - how about a marvellously elegant moth orchid (Phalaenopsis)? I treated myself to a couple this summer and I know that even with my sometimes erratic care they should keep on performing for years to come! Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com for her ‘Winter thru’ Spring Collection’ of gorgeous UK-grown garden-ready vegetable plants ready for delivery in September. You’ll also find many gardening items including growing frames, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, raised bed kits, Nemaslug and other nematode controls, copper tape, pull-out EasyTunnels, signed books and lots more besides.

DIVE INTO THE OCEAN FILM FESTIVAL WORLD TOUR

Diver Kimi Werner by Perrin James

The Ocean Film Festival World Tour is returning to the UK this autumn, bringing an evening of inspirational and jaw-dropping ocean films. The event, which originates in Australia, features a brand-new selection of the world’s best ocean-themed short films, with action and spellbinding footage from both above and below the water’s surface. The 2017 film programme sees intrepid freedivers explore haunting shipwrecks, nomadic sailors face the icy waters of Antarctica, and features awe-inspiring marine life such as humpback wales and the endangered Giant Pacific Mantaray. Highlights from the 2017 Ocean Film Tour include: Sea Gypsies Infinity and her crew are about to embark on an extraordinary voyage: 8,000 miles from New Zealand to Patagonia, taking in the intimidating iceberg-strewn waters of Antarctica along the way. Whale Catchers High on the rugged cliffs above New Zealand’s 30

Cook Strait sits an unusual group of ‘citizen scientists.’ This motley collection of men in their 70s and 80s are keeping watch for humpback whales as part of the Cook Strait Whale Count – a study into the recovery of New Zealand’s humpback population since the end of New Zealand whaling in 1964. Fish People To some, the ocean is a fearsome and dangerous place. But to others, it’s a limitless world of fun, freedom and opportunity where life can be lived to the full. From surfers and spearfishers to a former coal miner and a group of at-risk kids in San Francisco, Fish People a film about the transformative effects of time spent in the ocean and how we can leave our limitations behind to find deeper meaning in the saltwater wilderness that lies just beyond the shore. The tour will be calling in at The Kings Theatre in Potsmouth on 4 October . To find out more about the festival, watch the trailer and book tickets, visit www.oceanfilmfestival.co.uk.

country parks among the best globally

Hampshire County Council’s five country parks are among the best in the world after being awarded Green Flags.

The international award, now into its third decade, is a sign to the public that Lepe, Manor Farm, Queen Elizabeth, Royal Victoria and Staunton country parks boast the highest possible environmental standards, are beautifully maintained, and have excellent visitor facilities. Councillor Andrew Gibson, the County Council’s Executive Member for Culture, Recreation and Countryside, said: ‘We’re delighted that our popular country parks have once again been recognised as world class open spaces for residents to enjoy. Green Flag Awards are hard earned and are only given to

the best green spaces across the globe. Our staff, volunteers and partners are rightly proud of this excellent their achievement.” Over the next four years, the County Council will be improving a range of country park facilities in Hampshire. The work includes providing new and improved visitor centres, cafés, play equipment, trails and parking, as well as enhancing the unique habitats, heritage and breath-taking scenery found at the five country parks.

Young achievers and mentors recognised at awards Hampshire County Council’s annual Investors in Young People Awards ceremony has given special recognition to five of the County Council’s very best apprentices and trainees. They also recognise other employers and the County Council’s teams that have provided good support for trainees and apprentices, across Hampshire. The County Council’s Executive Member for Education, Councillor Peter Edgar, said: “Hampshire County Council values its young trainees and apprentices very highly indeed, and we are very proud to see them achieving so much. For more information about apprenticeships or traineeships, or to apply, email hyip@hants.gov.uk or phone 01962 846193.

SOLENT WRECK PROJECT ENSURED LEGACY WITH LOTTERY AWARD As the first dive season on the wreck site of HMS Invincible in the Solent draws to a close this year, it has been announced the project has received initial Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) support to create a three-year programme to bring the excitement of the operation from the seabed to a much wider audience. Made possible by money raised by National Lottery players, ‘Diving Deep - The HMS Invincible 1744’ Project is a partnership with The Maritime Archaeology Sea Trust (MAST), The National Museum of the Royal Navy and Bournemouth University to archaeologically excavate, record, conserve and display the remains of the shipwreck Invincible, wrecked in 1758 in the Solent. Considered by many to be one of the most significant warships ever built, Invincible was built by the French in 1744 and captured by the British on the 3 May 1747.

A major exhibition will be hosted by both Chatham and Portsmouth Historic Dockyards and once the National Museum’s Centre for Discovery is opened in 2020. Professor Dominic Tweddle, Director General of The National Museum of the Royal Navy said: “We have a handful of artefacts on show already from Invincible and cannot wait to preserve and display as many as 500 more.”

Take to the skies Formed in 2000, the Solent Aviation Art Society (SAAS) exists to increase the appreciation and interest of the art. Originally SAAS met at the Solent Sky museum in Southampton but subsequently expanded its programme to include visits to aviation venues. In an exciting new development, SAAS’s programme has recently further diversified with a series of painting workshops planned. The first group of these is being held on the second Wednesday of every month in the Community Space, a large room within Tesco at Fareham. The group welcomes all artists who have an interest in aviation art.

TECH FOR THE NEW TERM

The best solutions for students and schoolwork It’s that time of year again: schools, colleges and universities are readying for a new term and parents are running around trying to get everything their children need. Increasingly that includes technology, whether that’s a basic laptop for younger children’s homework or an all-rounder for studying, social media and streaming video at home or in student accommodation. It’s worth thinking about streaming video if your children are staying away from home, because you can get almost all the TV you want for free, entirely legally, via the internet and most catch-up TV apps (BBC Iplayer does need a licence). There’s no need for a pricey Sky or Virgin contract, just a decent broadband service. If video is going to be a key thing, make sure whatever you buy has a good-sized screen or buy a Chromecast, which enables you to stream video from your computer to a TV. The best all-rounder is a Windows 10 laptop, and you’ll find lots of really good bargains from the likes of Dell, Lenovo, HP, Acer and Asus around the £400 mark. 1

There’s another option: tablets such as the iPad. Previously we’ve said they aren’t really ideal for serious work but that’s changed with the arrival of the iPad Pro, which is a genuine alternative to a powerful laptop. It’s pricey though (from £619) with another £159 for a keyboard cover or £99 for the Apple Pencil (£99). 40

In the unlikely event that your child doesn’t already have a phone, give Apple a miss unless you’re really fond of their products or don’t care about the cost: Lenovo’s P2 and 2 the Moto G5 are both brilliant Android smartphones and cost less than £150 SIM-free. And if they need an e-reader, Amazon’s all-conquering Kindle remains the one to get - but you don’t need to buy the top-end Kindle Voyage (£169): the basic Kindle is just £59.99 and does the job perfectly well.

It’s worth checking your insurance policies too, especially if your children will be moving out for college or university. Your home insurance might already cover your children’s gadgets when they’re away from home, but don’t assume that’s the case - and if they do, check the excesses, which might be higher than the cost of repairing or replacing a gadget. The same applies to any contents insurance you may take out for your children’s accommodation. Lots of companies have insurance policies specifically designed for students’ computers and smartphones, and sites such as money.co.uk enable you to compare the cover, cost and excesses quickly. We’d particularly recommend insurance that covers you for accidental damage: if something can be dropped, smashed or accidentally covered in liquid, it probably will be. Main Image- iPad Pro 10.5” £619. 1. Google Chromecast £30-£69. 2. Lenovo P2, around £300.

Parenting

creative writing Helping Your Child To Create Stories by Kate Duggan Whether they’re slaying dragons or discovering new worlds, children’s imagination knows no bounds. When it comes to creating stories with characters and plots though, it can be difficult to get started when faced with a blank page. A few props and story prompts can really help to get those creative juices flowing. Creating characters Fill a cloth bag with accessories, such as perfume and aftershave samples, a silk tie, an old pair of glasses, a toy, a brooch, a hat, a watch and other personal items. Try to avoid things that your child already associates with someone they know. Scour your local charity shops and ask friends for donations. You could also add a few fantastical items to the bag, like a pirate hat, fairy wand, bottle of witch’s potion, toy spaceship and so on. Ask your child to choose two or three items from the bag, without looking. Then ask them to create a character based around the items. Ask questions to help. What does the character look like? Are they male or female? How old are they? What do they like doing? Where do they live? And so on. Your child can then write about their character, or draw a picture of them, or both.

Creating stories If your child is struggling to think of a story, creative prompts can help them to get started. You could come up with a scenario and ask them to think about what might happen next. For example, ‘Your character finds a door hidden behind a bookcase. It’s only two feet high, so they have to crawl through it. What do they find when they do?’ Alternatively, you can write short story prompts on pieces of paper. Here’s a few to get you started: • Goes to space • Gets lost • Makes a new friend • Invents something • Has their wish come true • Goes on holiday • Discovers they have a superpower • Finds a hurt animal • Discovers a secret door Fold each story prompt up so it can’t be read, and ask your child to choose one or two. They can then use the prompts as the basis for their story. Telling their story Storytelling isn’t just about writing. Your child could: • Tell you the story • Act it out • Make puppets and put on a show • Create a comic strip Extra resources There are lots of free online resources to help you. A good place to start is www.youngwriters.co.uk, which offers downloadable workshops and activities.

Advertorial

Dr Hywel Cooper is a Consultant Dermatologist practising at Spire Portsmouth Hospital

“Dear Doctor” I have a mole on my back which I’ve started to worry about lately. I do put sun cream on it when sunbathing but am wondering if there are any signs I should look out for? How do I know if it’s dangerous? Moles are a normal part of most people’s skin and can appear and develop during childhood until early adulthood. As a dermatologist, I would recommend being sensible whilst in the sun as the skin (and moles) can be damaged in different ways - not only by sun burning but also by the love of a lifelong baseline tan. Sunbeds are not always regulated and can sometimes feature higher levels of ultraviolet rays (the rays that tan and burn you) making them particularly dangerous. All EU sunscreens are tested. I’d recommend factor 30+ SPF (UVB) and good to high UVA protection (should always be labelled) applied as directed. For vitamin D you only require a low level of sun exposure when the sun is weaker (early or later in the day) a few times a week, so not enough to be turning you into a prune! The key to monitoring moles is change. If a longstanding mole is changing it should be reviewed by a specialist. Many national organisations have produced handy tips on what to look out for. The ABCD is a widely used rule which advises people to get their moles checked if they exhibit any of the following signs: • A mole is becoming Asymmetrical or more irregular • Border is becoming uneven • Colour is changing or increasing
