Enjoy the all fun of Hedge End’s traditional carnival, which has been held every year on the first Saturday in July since 1921. A great day for all the family with side stalls, entertainment and a fairground. The procession starts at 2.15pm, from the playing fields on St. John’s Road and finishes at Greta Park, Upper Northam Road. It’s free to watch but please bring plenty of change as collecting buckets will be in attendance. There is a small charge to enter Greta park, but this includes some great entertainment.
The Carnival is organised by a small group of community spirited people who meet once a month at the Village Hall in Hedge End. It is a light-hearted affair and we are always looking for assistance. All money raised by the carnival and associated events are distributed among many good causes operating in the Hedge End area. For more information visit www.hedgeendcarnival.org.uk

Editor’s Letter
WHEN I WAS YOUNG When I was young, and for many of you this will resonate, my sister and I would spend our school holidays playing with friends, roaming the woods and playgrounds, out the door after breakfast, dashing back at lunchtime for sustenance only to return in time for tea. We didn’t have mobile phones to be checked up on and felt quite safe – and it cost my parents nothing except a higher consumption of washing powder! To meet this change of kidcare culture over the years there is a plethora of entertainment, clubs, classes and events to choose from. We’ve included as many as we have room for (see What’s on pages 6 and 7) and the article Use Your Imagination (p26) gives ideas for free activities. A day out On

Although many distributors stay with us for years, teens grow up and adults grow older, meaning that we do regularly have vacancies in the area. All we need is for you to be available once every other month for a few hours (weekday or weekend), and we give you 5 days to do the delivery. We try to find a route close to home for you if we can, but if you are an adult we will pay mileage if we ask you to travel more than a mile. SUMMER OF FUN From family-friendly festivals to wet weather fun, we’ve plenty of ideas to keep the kids entertained this summer. Back to nature Fly a kite, go geocaching, build a den, explore a new trail – you don’t have to travel far or spend a lot of money to have fun outdoors. If you need some inspiration, try The National Trust’s 50 things to do before you’re 11 ¾ list, which is available as a free app, a printed leaflet, or a PDF. The app is particularly appealing for tech-savvy kids, as it lets them record their activities and earn printable certificates. Activities range from bug hunting and playing pooh sticks to canoeing, rock climbing and orienteering. Festivals Festival season isn’t just for the grown-ups – there are plenty of family-friendly festivals to choose from, including: • Suffolk’s Latitude Festival has its own family campsite and kids’ area. Children can enjoy a whole host of activities, from pizza making to 8
weird science. There are live shows for children of all ages, a kids’ disco, and plenty of music to dance along to. • At Camp Bestival children can learn circus tricks, be entertained by Mister Maker, Mr Tumble and Dick & Dom, jump on the world’s biggest bouncy castle, and lots more. • Cheshire’s Just So festival is specifically aimed at children and offers a ‘magical experience where art, music and literature are embedded and entwined in a beautiful and wondrous landscape.’ There’s everything from baby yoga and storytelling to dance workshops, live shows and a jelly fight! • Chagstock is rather smaller than Latitude or Bestival, but offers great value for money. An adult weekend ticket is £90, including camping, and under-12s go free. There’s a family camping area, play area, bouncy castle and various activities. è

Learning through play The summer holidays are not the time to worry about spelling tests and practice papers. However, that doesn’t mean that your child can’t have fun learning a new skill, whether it’s sewing, baking or climbing trees. Many children struggle with learning how to tell the time. If yours is one of them, a Twistiti watch might help them master that particular skill this summer. Hours and minutes are brightly coloured and easy to read. There are also lots of interchangeable straps to choose from, including camouflage, animal print and stripes. Our eight year old tester said the watch made it much easier for her to work out the time, see www.twistiti.com.
Wet days at home The British weather being what it is, there are likely to be some rainy days this summer. It can help to have some plans up your sleeve, so here are a few ideas: • Build a den inside. A couple of chairs or a table, a few old sheets or blankets, and a washing line with pegs are all you need. Use the den for family board games, picnics and teddy bear tea parties. • Have a treasure hunt, with a series of clues, or a scavenger hunt to find mini prizes or chocolate coins. • Make some puppets out of old socks, cardboard boxes or wooden spoons; write a play and put on a performance for other members of the family. • If you just can’t tear them away from their screens, have a pyjama party. Add pizza, popcorn and playmates and you should be able to hide out in another room for at least an hour’s peace and quiet. By Kate Duggan

A WORLD WITHOUT WIRES The best way to get wireless Wi-Fi at home or on the go If you go out and about this year, you’re in for a happy surprise: You don’t need to be travelling far from home to get free Wi-Fi. Many UK towns and cities have free Wi-Fi schemes - and most casual eating and coffee chains usually offer some form of free internet access. Just watch what you’re signing up for: such public-spirited provision is often there in order to capture valuable marketing data, so keep a close eye on any tick-boxes you’re expected to complete. It’s also a good idea to use a virtual private networking (VPN) service such as Tunnelbear (www.tunnelbear.com) or Windscribe (www.windscribe.com) to keep your connection private if you intend to use public Wi-Fi services. You never know who’s looking in.
1 14
If you’re staying at home and just want to get better reception around the house or in the garden, there are several ways to make your Wi-Fi work harder. The first, cheapest and simplest thing to do to improve
2
your Wi-Fi connection is to move the router: ideally it should be higher than your furniture and obstacles such as radiators, which are hard for the radio waves to pass through. If your wireless router is getting on a bit it’s probably stuck with older, slow Wi-Fi technology, so if you can stretch to an 802.11ac wireless router you’ll notice a huge difference in speed and range - provided 3 of course your laptop, tablet or smartphone has the same Wi-Fi support. If the speed is fine but the signal just doesn’t go far enough, a Wi-Fi extender may be just the trick: it connects to the network and throws the signal further, so for example you might extend your home Wi-Fi network to the garden or patio. It isn’t expensive or difficult, either: good Wi-Fi extenders are available for less than £40 and take seconds to set up. 1. Netgear Nighthawk 802.11ac router. 2. Wi-Fi dongle to upgrade PC’s wireless. 3. D-Link Wi-Fi extender.

BABIES ISSUED WITH LIBRARY CARDS
Parents are signing up their babies to their local library at the same time as registering their births, as part of a new Hampshire County Council initiative. In the past year, 1,267 new arrivals have received their very own cards from Hampshire Library Service after visiting Hampshire Registration Service. The voluntary scheme has seen around 20% of all babies registered in Hampshire join the service since May 2016. Councillor Andrew Gibson, Executive Member for Culture, Recreation and Countryside, said: “This is a wonderful initiative with our Registration Service to help place our libraries at the heart of family life. It’s never too early to start enjoying books with your little one – introducing skills like listening and identifying shapes and colours before they can read.” For more details, and to join your local library, visit hants.gov.uk/librariesandarchives/library/jointhelibrary Image: Baby Jennifer with parents Jane and Stephen Baker and her library card.

First of all, many congratulations on your weight loss! Weight loss leads to many great benefits, including improved general health, fitness, mobility and hygiene. However, major weight loss comes at a price. When people become quite large, the skin expands to accommodate the extra fatty tissue. The skin may expand so much that it loses its natural elasticity. This means that when the fat disappears (whether through lifestyle changes or surgery), the skin is unable to shrink back to its original size and many people are left with large empty flaps of skin that can be unsightly and embarrassing or even cause significant functional problems. Unfortunately, there is no magic wand that will remove this skin (despite promises made by various non-surgical treatments), so the only way to get rid of this extra skin is to… well, remove it. This usually involves cutting away the extra skin from the thighs, tummy, arms, breast or face using the latest plastic surgery techniques to minimise downtime and promote faster recovery. Think of it as pulling a bedsheet straight but, instead of the extra material being tucked away, it is trimmed off. The surgery itself is significant and should not be undertaken lightly. It’s important to research your surgeon and be sure that they are adequately trained and experienced in post-weight loss surgery. Comfort, Heat Protection, Security and Style: Why you should use Glass Film Conservatories People spend thousands of pounds on a new conservatory, only to find that it gets too hot and uncomfortable to use during the summer months. But there is a solution: solar control window film reduces the direct heat and glare from the sun by up to 80%. At about a third of the cost of roof blinds – and considerably easier to keep clean - window film is a more efficient and cost effective solution. Solar film is suitable for both glass and polycarbonate roofs. Sun Damage Solar control film is a very effective way of protecting your floors and fabrics against the damaging effects of the sun. Ultra violet light is the main culprit, so by filtering it out, the fading process will be slowed down considerably. Heat and natural light are also a factor, so for increased protection, various levels of tint are available to suit every situation. Safety and Security Specialist films will strengthen
your glass and hold it together in case of impact. An application of clear safety film will bring any older glass in your home up to European standards whilst security film reinforces your glazing in case of intruders. Both films are designed to give you piece of mind knowing that your home is safe. Privacy If privacy is an issue, then then it’s worth considering silver reflective film that gives a ‘one way effect’ or frosted film that allows plenty of light to pass through whilst maintaining your modesty! Or for a more elegant solution, you could choose a decorative window film adding colour, vibrancy and privacy to your room. A modern alternative to net curtains. Oakmount Installations offers a supply and fit service for all these applications, with 15 years of experience. Conservatory Roof Film: wish I’d done it years ago! Tania Houston, Director, Discover Magazines Our house was built with a small conservatory at the back. For the whole 18 years we’ve lived there, that room has been almost unusable from April to September – it’s too hot, and it’s too bright. I’d considered roof blinds in the past, but insects and dust love conservatories and it’s not easy cleaning blinds at roof height. So when I saw Oakmount 46 20
Installations advertising roof film to reduce heat and light, I booked straight away. I love the finished result. There’s still plenty of light coming into the room (the picture of the work in progress makes it look much darker than it is) but when the sun is out, the light level is more

like a cloudy day. We’ve had a couple of warm spells since April and I really noticed such a difference. Not only is the room more usable, but there’s less heat going into the rest of the house. Highly recommended!

HEALTH & EXERCISE Everyone has read articles or watched programmes on their Tv about the benefits of exercise and a healthy balanced diet. Exercise can take many forms, it’s not all red-faced sweaty people pumping iron or pounding the treadmill down the gym. There are many different things you can do to help keep you and your heart in good shape, and it needn’t hit you hard in the pocket. The secret to a lasting exercise regime is to first find something you like doing, you are far more likely to stick to if you enjoy it, it’s all too easy to go full steam ahead with an exercise programme that you don’t really like and that will increase the chances of you giving up. Of course, the exercise needs to be backed up with a sensible diet, nobody is saying only eat vegetables and salads all the time, but a good rule of thumb is ‘everything in moderation’. USE YOUR IMAGINATION British Adder snake
There are many attractions in the area which will come to mind when planning what to do during the summer. However some need a little more thought, especially if you are watching your budget. All these are low cost or free days out. Imagine you are a millionaire: Northington Grange is the foremost example of the Greek Revival style in England, built between 1804 and 1809. It is free, and a great place for imagining yourself as Lord or Lady of the Manor. This is a lovely picnic spot too. www.englishheritage.co.uk and search for Northington. Imagine you are an art critic: The grounds of Hillier Gardens (near Romsey) make an interesting walk at any time of the year, but in the summer they have an annual exhibition of Art in the Garden. www.hilliergardens.org.uk Imagine you are a child: With a signal box and station and a dual track running through tunnels, over and under bridges, round curves and changing gradients the miniature railway provides a fun ride for children and adults. Imagine you are a wildlife expert: Enjoy a date with nature at the Reptile Centre, with fun activities for the whole family. Quiz trail and ‘making’ activities for children. Come and see 26
the ‘live’ video of birds on their nests as well as the reptiles and amphibians. For more information 0300 067 4601. There is no charge for this event. Just turn up between 10.30am and 4pm. New Forest Reptile Centre, SO43 7GR Wed 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 Aug. www.forestry.gov.uk and search for the centre For more nature trails look no further than the Wildlife and Butterfly Walk at Southampton Common. Learn about all the species of butterflies and moths that are in the UK. The walks start just inside the main gates at the end of Cemetery Road where parking is available. The walks and events are all free but any donations would be much appreciated. Bookings - 07538 888 655. Imagine you are on holiday: The land in the New Forest is quite unlike anywhere else in the county and once you are in there it feels like you are on holiday. You can take a long walk or to see more take bikes with you. Take a picnic and drinking water. Imagine you are a golf professional: If you’ve never played the game and wouldn’t dream of going onto a main course you can still have the chance to swing a club. Go down to the mini golf at Andrews East Park, Southampton, it is around £2.50 per person and it is an 18 hole course. For more information call 02380 833000.

CASTLE ARTISTS ON SHOW Southampton City Art Gallery is showcasing the finest historic and contemporary castle artists and combining history with art. Capture the Castle: British Artists and the Castle from Turner to Le Brun is the first ever large-scale art exhibition on the subject of British castles. Turner, Girtin, Cotman, Ibbetson, Sandby, Varley and many others travelled to castles throughout Britain in the search of the picturesque. Castles, often sited in spectacular locations, were the perfect subject for the Romantic movement of the early 19th century that embraced the heroic past.
Castles have been equally inspiring to modern-day artists and the exhibition includes work by over 25 contemporary artists. The exhibition runs until 2 September. More information at southamptoncityartgallery.com.

An exercise booklet is available, to buy or download, which will help you try the Love to Move programme in your own home with your loved ones. Booklets can be bought by calling 0345 1297129 Ext. 2315 or you can download a copy for free on their website britishgymnasticsfoundation.org/lovetomove.

Pets
BEWARE OF TICKS WHEN WALKING YOUR DOG Ticks pose a serious health risk to your dog during the summer and early autumn months, particularly if you take them for walks through bracken and heather. If your dog has a long coat, a tick will barely be noticeable on the skin, so it’s important that you physically check their body when you finish your walk. What does a tick look like? Ticks are tiny spider-like creatures that attach themselves to a ‘host,’ and feed on their blood. Once they start to feed, the tick increases in size and becomes more noticeable to the human eye. Although it’s tempting to pull a tick from your dog, part of it is likely to remain under their skin which can have serious health consequences in the months that follow. You can buy a dedicated tick remover from your local pet shop or veterinary practice. Although other methods of removing ticks exist, tick removers allow you to twist and pull the tick from your dog, bringing the entire body away. Why are ticks dangerous to your pet? Ticks cause Lyme disease, or Lyme borreliosis, in dogs, but signs of illness don’t commonly appear until several months after they have been bitten. Symptoms include: • High fever. • Loss of appetite. • Swelling of the joints. • Swollen lymph nodes. • Lethargy. Once diagnosed, a prolonged course of antibiotics can be used to fight the infection, but some dogs may continue to experience recurring symptoms throughout their life. 34

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company
policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Hedge End area
and manager Justin Friel agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be

FUN FOR ALL THE FAMILY AS THE ROMSEY SHOW CELEBRATES 175 YEARS Saturday 9 September There is fun for all ages and interests with heritage and history forming part of the spectacle as The Romsey Show hits a landmark 175 years. One of the oldest agricultural shows in the country, the Show started out in 1842 when Queen Victoria was on the throne. The Romsey Show has grown to become one of the south’s largest one-day agricultural events.
Based on the historic Broadlands estate, kids can dive into the past with Wessex Archaeology, dig up the past with Trench1 and marvel at vintage and historic machinery. With over 1,000 livestock at the Show you will be able to see the best horses, cattle, sheep and donkeys. Enjoy heavy horses in action, watch the hectic terrier races, join in the

family dog show and see magnificent falconry displays.
New for this years show, visitors will be entertained by the Mole Show, impressive dog and duck skills, and don’t miss the dancing sheep! With more than 500 retail stands for a countrystyle shopping fix, don’t miss out. With prices frozen at 2016 rates and under 11s free, get your tickets at www.romseyshow.co.uk from July.
