Multi Million Funding Secured for Garda Training College

Independent TD Michael Lowry has announced the confirmation of additional Government funding for the Garda Training College in Templemore, describing it as a decisive and necessary investment in the future of the college.

The Garda training college is the heartbeat of Templemore and central to the economic activity in the town.

Design of new classrooms and training facilities is completed. The OPW are currently preparing tender documents and will shortly be in a position to invite tenders for this multi-million investment.

Deputy Lowry said “This investment provides certainty for Templemore and sends a strong signal of confidence in the role it plays nationally.”.

The announcement follows a period during which doubts were expressed about the continuation of the College particularly prior to the last election.

During negotiations for the formation of the current government, Deputy Lowry strongly advocated the case for Templemore College, insisting that its future must be secured. Arising from

The additional funding will address existing capacity challenges, enabling an increase in the number of Gardaí trained during each intake cycle. This expansion is particularly important given the exceptional demand to join the force, with more than 11,000 applicants in 2025 alone.

Deputy Lowry said that sustained investment in the college is critical to the provision of professionally trained Gardaí, which in turn supports our society, our economy, and the safety of our citizens.

I am determined to ensure that Templemore Training centre develops to meet demand and remains as the focal point for Garda training.

I will continue to advocate for the Garda training college to ensure it remains properly resourced and fit for the demands of modern policing.

Historic Goal for Cashel’s Caoimhe Perdue as Ireland Shine in Pro League Debut History was made last week at the Sport Ireland Campus, as the Ireland Women’s hockey team made their long-awaited debut in the prestigious FIH Hockey Pro League, playing in front of sold-out crowds and ending a seven-year wait to join the competition.

Among the standout moments was Cashel’s Caoimhe Perdue, who scored her first international goal for Ireland during a fiercely contested match against England. Using her trademark drag-flick technique, Perdue’s strike was a highlight in a game that saw Ireland earn their first-ever result against England

since 1994. Currently playing with Dutch club HC Rotterdam, Perdue later added another goal in the tournament, underlining her growing influence on the international stage.

The six-day event featured 12 matches and showcased six top-tier international teams.

Ireland battled world-class opposition including England and Belgium, thrilling fans with their resilience and skill. A historic milestone came when Ireland defeated England in a dramatic penalty shootout to secure their first Pro League point, thanks to heroics from goalkeeper Elizabeth Murphy and sharp finishing

from Hannah McLoughlin.

Other tournament highlights included Belgium edging England in a 3–2 thriller and Germany’s men producing a strong showing against Argentina. The Sport Ireland Campus was transformed into a world-class venue in just ten weeks, proving Ireland’s capability to host elite hockey events.

Ireland now turns its focus to the next Pro League stage in Tasmania this February, buoyed by their breakthrough performances and Perdue’s landmark goal, a moment that will inspire young players across Tipperary and beyond.

Cashel continues Ancient Tradition with Hunting the Wren Celebration One of Ireland’s oldest seasonal customs was brought to life in Cashel on St Stephen’s morning, as musicians and spectators gathered in the town centre for the annual Hunting the Wren. Organised by Cashel Comhaltas, the event took place on the Plaza at 11am and attracted a lively crowd despite the winter chill. Traditional music and colourful costumes filled the square, creating a festive atmosphere that has long been associated with this unique St Stephen’s Day ritual.

Joe Doyle of Cashel Comhaltas said the event was an important way to keep heritage alive: “This is about more than music, it’s about community and tradition. Hunting the Wren has been part of Irish life for centuries, and we were proud to see young musicians taking part and helping to keep the custom alive.”

After the public performance, musicians continued the tradition of community outreach by visiting several local nursing homes, where they played for residents and shared seasonal cheer. This gesture reflected the custom’s enduring link between celebration and generosity.

Hunting the Wren is a folk tradition deeply rooted in Irish culture and closely associated with St Stephen’s Day. Historically, groups of musicians, known as “wren boys” would move through towns and villages playing music, singing, and wearing distinctive costumes. The practice is believed to date back to pre-Christian Ireland, often linked to Celtic rituals marking the winter solstice and the turning of the year.

In folklore, the wren was regarded as the “king of the birds,” symbolising renewal and the natural cycle.

In the past, the custom involved the symbolic hunting of a wren, which was carried from house to house on a decorated pole or holly bush. Performances were given in exchange for food or small donations, later shared or used for community purposes. Today, the tradition is entirely symbolic, but its spirit of music, camaraderie, and charity remains strong.

Cashel’s celebration showed that even in modern times, ancient traditions can still unite communities and bring joy to the festive season. For those who gathered on the Plaza, it was a reminder of the enduring power of music and heritage to connect generations.

All star lineup for 2026 Tipperary Town Music Festival The 2026 Tipperary Town Music Festival was launched at the Porter House, Tipperary Town, just prior to Christmas. Members of the committee, helpers and supporters attended to launch an all star lineup of entertainment over the two weekends in May. Music promoter John O’Brien explained the format for 2026 and the artists performing nightly. “We have changed it around for 2026 with music over two weekends, with three nights of entertainment on both weekends. It will kick off on Friday May 1st with one of Galway’s favourite sons, the great Mike Denver. Mike is riding the crest of a wave at the moment and his audience is vast throughout Ireland. On the Saturday night the 2nd, we have Mark McCabe, music producer, remixer, radio DJ and club DJ, from Newry, Northern Ireland.

In 2000, Mark released “Maniac 2000” and it went to number one, as the second biggest-selling record ever in Ireland. On Sunday night the 3rd we have undoubtedly Ireland’s number one tribute show

ever, Abbaesque. This is a Bank Holiday weekend (Monday 2nd) so we are expecting huge crowds over the first weekend. On the following weekend starting on Friday 8th we have a Teenage Disco, which is aimed at 13 - 17 year olds and no bar.

Saturday 9th features the hugely talented singer, songwriter and performer, Nathan Carter. A huge attraction on the Irish music scene, Nathan has brought a whole new generation of fans of all ages to Country Music, and he is sure to draw a huge crowd to Tipperary Town for the festival.

The Sunday night attraction is the very lively six-piece Irish Folk/Celtic Rock band hailing from Co. Tyrone, The Whistlin’ Donkeys, who will start at the earlier time of 8:00pm and finish at 10:00pm. There will also be support acts and D.J’s throughout the two weekends of the festival” said John. Tickets for both weekends are currently on sale from willwego.com and from tipperarytown.ie and patrons are advised to purchase tickets as early as possible. Tickets are being kept

at a very reasonable price; €20 for the first two nights and €25 thereafter, except for the Teenage Disco, which is priced at €15. The venue for the festival is the same as last year, a specially erected marquee on a site opposite the Lidl Store and Carpark, kindly provided by Eamonn Ryan of the Porter House.

With the marquee being erected for a longer period of time this year, I put it to the Festival Committee, as to whether they might be open to allowing it to be used for a community event when it wasn’t being used by the festival themselves. “Yes we would very much be open to that proposal on any of the following dates; Monday May 4th to Thursday May 7th (inclusive).

So the clock has started ticking towards the countdown to the 2026 Tipperary Town Music Festival. It certainly is a wonderful programme of music for the two weeks and the town should be buzzing for it.
