Fine Gael’s Michael Murphy topped the poll in Clonmel and had the highest number of first preference votes throughout the county in a very predictable local election in Tipperary.
There was talk in advance of polling day that people wanted ‘change’ but it will be pretty much as before with a large percentage of councillors retaining their seats.
Labour was the biggest winner in the election to Tipperary County Council while Independent TD Michael Lowry’s stable of councillors retained its five seats. Sinn Féin failed to add to its two representatives on the 40-seat local authority during what was a very close contest.
Fine Gael’s vote in CashelTipperary was disappointing but it was always going to be impossible to repeat the feats of Michael FitzGerald. First-time candidate Matthew Fogarty was standing instead of FitzGerald, a 2019 poll-topper who was one of the State’s longest-serving councillors before his retirement at the end of the outgoing council’s term.
Mr Fogarty polled just 340 votes and the seat went to another firsttime candidate, Independent John O’Heney, who topped the poll and was elected on the first count.
However, Fine Gael took 10 seats, down two on 2019’s total, and finished tied with Fianna Fáil, which gained one seat, as the council’s largest party.
Labour will be very pleased with the outcome with three councillors elected, up from one last time out. Fiona Bonfield, a cousin of local TD and former Labour leader Alan Kelly, topped the poll in Newport. First-time candidate Michael ‘Chicken’ Brennan was elected in Carrick-
on-Suir and Louise Morgan Walsh was successful in Nenagh.
Though it was a long night, the first count in Thurles filled 20 of the 40 available seats on Tipperary County Council.
The count adjourned in the early hours of Sunday morning and resumed at 10:10am, after a few hours of respite for all involved.
The various counts were announced over the course of the day on Sunday, with the final councillor for Tipperary County Council being announced at 8:20pm, and with that, the count was complete.
The breakdown of the elected councillors, and when they were elected, and whether they have retained their seats or are first time elects, can be seen below.
The main changes since the last election are as follows:
The Labour Party has trebled its seats in Tipperary, gaining a seat in the Nenagh LEA, Carrick-onSuir LEA, and retaining its seat in the Newport LEA.
Fine Gael has lost two seats, while Fianna Fáil has gained one, as have Independent candidates.
Cahir LEA (Local Electoral Area) - 4 seats:
Independent candidates Máirín McGrath (2,079) and Andy Moloney (1,762) were both elected on the first count.
The next candidate to be elected was Fine Gael’s Marie Murphy (1,456) on the fifth count.
Fianna Fáil’s Micheál Anglim (1,462) took the final available seat in the LEA on the eighth count.
All four elected candidates have retained their seats from 2019.
Carrick-on-Suir LEA - 5 seats:
Fianna Fáil’s Imelda Goldsboro (1,898) was elected on the first count, alongside Sinn Féin’s David Dunne (1,759), retaining the seats they secured in 2019.
On the second count, Labour Party’s Michael ‘Chicken’ Brennan (1,611) was elected for the first time, having just missed the quota in the first count (Votes: 1,486, Quota: 1,508)
He was followed by Fianna Fáil’s Kieran Bourke (1,518), who held onto the seat he won in 2019. Finally, the last seat was filled by Fine Gael’s Mark Fitzgerald (1,545) who also retained his seat.
Cashel-Tipperary LEA - 7 seats:
Independent candidate and firsttime elect John O’Heney (2,534) surpassed the quota of 1,560 and took the first seat in the LEA on the first count.
The first count also saw Fine Gael’s Declan Burgess (1,852) and independent candidate Liam Browne (1,665) elected. Burgess retained his seat, while Browne is elected for the first time.
On the seventh count, the fourth seat was retained by Fianna Fáil’s Roger Kennedy (1,566)
The eighth count saw Fine Gael’s Mary Hanna Hourigan (1,615) retain her seat.
Joining the councillors in the tenth round was Fine Gael’s John Crosse (1,739), also retaining his seat.
The final elect for the final seat in the entirety of Tipperary was Sinn Féin’s Annemarie Ryan Shiner (1,230), who retained her seat on the eleventh count.
Clonmel LEA - 6 seats:
On the first count, Fine Gael’s Michael Murphy (2,746), WUA’s

Pat English (1,574), and Fianna Fáil’s Siobhán Ambrose (1,512) held their seats from the last election.
Fine Gael’s John Fitzgerald (1,824) also held his seat on the second count.
On the fifth count, independent candidate Richie Molloy (1,409) did the same.
The final seat was filled by another independent candidate, Niall P Dennehy (1,291).
All of the successful candidates retained seats won in the last election.
Nenagh LEA - 5 seats:
To no surprise, independent candidates Joe Hannigan (2,233) and Michael O’Meara (1,822) were elected on the first count.
The third count saw the first-
time election of Fianna Fáil’s Ryan O’Meara (1,747).
seats:
The Local Electoral Area was complete by the end of the fourth count with the re-election of independent candidate Séamus Morris (1,851), and the first-time election of Labour Party’s Louise Morgan Walsh (1,749).
Newport LEA - 4 seats:
The first count in the area saw the filling of three of the four available seats.
These were Labour Party’s Fiona Bonfield (2,346), first-time elect and independent candidate Pamela Quirke O’Meara (1,665), and Fine Gael’s Dr Phyll Bugler (1,636).
This left one seat up for grabs, which was retained by Fianna Fáil’s John Carroll (1,595) on the fourth count.
Roscrea-Templemore LEA - 4
On the first count, two candidates held their seats – Fianna Fáil’s Michael Smith (2,460) and independent candidate Shane Lee (2,231).
The third seat for this LEA was filled on the third count by independent candidate Eddie Moran (1,887) who retained his seat.
Fine Gael’s William Kennedy (1,616) took the fourth and final seat in the sixth count, securing his first seat in the LEA.
Thurles LEA - 5 seats:
The first count saw independent candidates Jim Ryan (2,435), and Micheál Lowry (2,184), and Fianna Fáil’s Sean Ryan (1,638) retain their seats.
The second count welcomed first-time elect, Fianna Fáil’s Fiona

Cashel Town in talk of the
By Liam Browne
Cashel Backed Burgess and joined Team Liam in momentous election result for the town
Politics is like sport or war, where no matter how a team plays or fights, at the end of the day, winners and losers emerge. There are few other places than an election count centre, where massive elation and crushing disappointment happen side by side, along with the strained nerves and chewed fingernails of not just a candidate, but their families, supporters and campaign workers. Every five years this pantomime plays out, and so it happened again last weekend in the Presentation
Convent in Thurles, when after a long day of voting on Friday, an even longer day of counting on Saturday ensued. And by the end of the first count, at almost midnight, four Cashel based candidates faced into the results of the public vote, with different degrees of response.
For sitting Fine Gael councillor Declan Burgess, delight was the order of the day, as he increased his first preference share from his result in 2019, and was elected on the first count with a final total of 1852 ballots in his pile. When the announcement came, the years of work and months of canvassing came to a close with Declan being hoisted aloft by his delighted band of family and friends. Within fifteen feet of him, another Cashel man, Liam Browne, was being held aloft just as high. A former neighbour of Declan’s in Oliver Plunkett Park, and son of former town councillor Michael Browne, Liam Browne was also elected on the first count, with just as impressive a total of 1665 first preference votes. Standing as an Independent, Liam had a varied team of committed family and supporters, many whom were first timers to an
election campaign, and they enthusiastically cheered as loudly as anyone else in the room when the Returning Officer gave out the result. It has to be noted on the day, that there were once two sitting town councillors in Cashel from Oliver Plunkett Park, Mickey Browne and Eddie Bennett, and there now sits two county councillors who once lived on the same small estate in Cashel. There must be something in the water. Elsewhere in the hall, were the other two Cashel based candidates in the race. Roger Kennedy was first elected to Tipperary County council in 2004, and was running in his own words one final time. He was a little disappointed at the end of the first count to see his 2019 vote shrink to 1218 from 1468, which meant he would have a longer wait to be reelected this time than last, but in the end he passed the magic number required to complete a quota on the seventh count, to take the fourth seat of the seven available. The final candidate from town, Molly Browne, who represented Sinn Fein and is a daughter of the current Tipperary Sinn Fein TD, Martin Browne, had a tough day at the polls. Perhaps hobbled by announcing her candidacy so late, and the general swing against Sinn Feins high polling figures of the past two years, Molly found herself out of the race after the third count.
The Cashel/Tipperary area, is the largest constituency in the whole of the county. Covering hundreds of square miles, and thousands of homes and voters, trying to get to every nook and cranny is almost impossible. But the candidates tried their best and met as many as they could, and that is to their credit, as they promote the toughest of all the democratic levels, the local level among their own.
The big winner in the area was a young candidate from the Tipperary end of the constituency, John O Heney, who polled a magnificent 2534 votes, and he’ll join Liam Browne as one of the two newcomers in the area, as incumbents
Mary Hanna Hourigan, John Crosse and Anne Marie Shiner also made it across the line on the day.
Saturday itself was a bright sunny day and from the very beginning, when the tallies started in the Cashel Tipperary area, it was obvious that it was going to be a good day for Independents. O’Heney’s home boxes of Emly and Lattin were first opened, and he built up a very substantial lead on all the other candidates. When the first of the Cashel boxes were finally opened, it was obvious that Browne was also going to do well, along with Burgess, and as the day progressed all three went further and further away from the pack. By one o clock in the afternoon, all three had passed the 1500 vote mark that was set by most of the grizzled tallying experts as the likely quota, and were sure to be elected on the first count. In the end that figure finally settled at 1560, and all three performed better. Then after lunch came the long night of actual counting and the area was the last to finally declare a first official count, electing the first three candidates, which was to include two first time winners.
Irish democracy is an open affair. It’s done in public and can be filled with raw emotions. Once the hall closed, the people left, many to local hostelries or back home to their own areas where even more supporters, neighbours, relations awaited to celebrate with the winners or commiserate with the fallen. Those who won now have responsibilities to fulfil and we wish them all the best in their endeavours. And we’ll likely see many of them again in five years time, when the sport will begin again in earnest once more.

Shock in Golden and Cashel as local man passes away in Australia
There was profound shock in the communities of Golden and Cashel at the weekend when news filtered through of the heartbreaking passing of popular local man Kevin Ivers after a tragic accident in Australia. Kevin had been living in Australia for the best part of ten years, but still retains very close family roots in West Tipperary. His father Richie comes from the well known Ivers family in Oliver Plunkett Park in Cashel, and his mother Ann is a proud Golden woman. Both parents were devastated when they got word of the tragedy, and now face the long trip to Australia to say goodbye to their beloved son. He will also be deeply missed by his Australian partner Rhyllie, and their two sons Sonny and Banjo, as well as his brothers Paddy and David and sisters Donna and Aoife, some of whom have also made their own
lives down under. Kevin was a bubbly character who also had a good word to say about everyone, and enjoyed the craic. He will be deeply missed by so many people, his family, friends and his neighbours.

Master Your Mind, Revitalise Your Health.
Would you like to experience more get-up-and-go?
Why can’t fresh healthy meals prepare themselves?
Does it feel as if caffeine – and the thought of the bed that you will eventually fall into – is the only thing fuelling you through the day?
Are you fed up with fighting one germ after another?
How can we even achieve a natural high? Isn’t it all about macrobiotic diets, marathons, and meditation?
For most of us, there is only one thing stopping us from achieving our health goals… and, whilst all the above are certainly great things in their own right, lasting change is down to another kind of ‘M altogether’: The Mind.
The mind is in charge of the body and unless we take control of it, some things (our perpetual attempts to lose weight/get fitter/squeeze in a daily walk-in natural surroundings/drink less alcohol/drink more water/sleep better/ditch the time-sucking social media gadgets) will never change. Even our willpower is governed by certain energy centres – or chakras – in the body so wishful thinking can only get us so far. But when we take a systematic yet spiritual approach to self-care, the health effects can be immense and the results can be fast, spurring us on to reach for greater heights. Pranic Healing is a complementary therapy which does just that, combining ancient healing methods with modern science.
So many of our obstacles are created by the mind and the mind alone. It is literally the only thing that stands between the life we have resigned ourselves to living (and sadly, in many cases, tolerating) and living our very best life. Those last five words may sound like an idealistic cliché, but they are totally achievable. Sometimes we just have to remember the basics of Pranic Healing. Everything is energy. We simply need to manipulate it to master our mindset. Those magical ‘M’ words again, but they really do contain the power to upgrade every aspect of our lives!
Gardening for Wildlife
Parents are the best equipped to take care of the chicks
By Albert Nolan
While June is not the month to sit back in a garden it is certainly a time to enjoy the fruits of your labour. Many of the early crops will be ready for harvest providing a feast for the taste buds and the senses.
The eagerly anticipated new potatoes are going down a treat in my house. They are gently boiled, and then served with a little butter and salt and sometimes with scallions or the tops of onions. In the morning the left-over potatoes are fried in a lot of butter to make a warm and filling breakfast for the hungry day ahead.
The broad beans are being picked regularly and have a very sweet taste and generally don’t make it out of the tunnel. If they do make it to the kitchen, they are boiled for a few minutes, mashed with butter and salt and served on crispy toast. There is a plentiful supply of fresh lettuce, coriander and parsley to garnish summer dishes and the great joy of growing is sharing any excess produce with family and friends.
The tops of many vegetables are edible and are very tasty. The young leaves of garlic have a less
intense taste than the bulb and are delicious in salads quiches and pasta. The leaves of carrots also make a fabulous pesto, and the young leaves of beetroot can be eaten in salads.
Besides eating, other gardening jobs include hardening off the tomatoes now that all risk of frost has passed. Tomatoes are perfectly happy outside in a sheltered spot and nothing beats rainwater for bringing on the fruits.
A very common question at this time of the year is what to do if you find a baby bird. Our natural parental instinct is to pick it up, put it in a shoebox and take home this apparently helpless creature. This action, while it has the best of intentions behind it, will condemn this poor chick to a slow death by starvation. That is unless we have endless time and patience and a steady supply of worms and cater-
If we haven’t yet taken a Pranic Healing course, then sitting down to relax and empty the mind with the Twin Hearts meditation is a great place to start (see below for a Meditation in your area) alongside practices such as positive affirmations and deep breathing techniques. These things alone are powerful habits that can easily be slotted into our days. As Master Choa Kok Sui says, “Sometimes the mind is like a wild horse. It doesn’t know how to behave. If emotions and passions are not controlled, how can you have stillness?”.
Those of us who have been on Pranic Healing Level 1, Advanced Pranic Healing and the Pranic Psychotherapy courses, can add all the cleansing and energising techniques that we have learnt from those courses to the mix. Now we have a toolkit and a half to keep our lives on track! But scheduling is key. Sunday afternoon is a great time to sit for a few moments with the diary to give each protocol or technique a nonnegotiable time in the coming week… else we fly by the seat of our pants and procrastination reigns supreme. Once again, these commitments needn’t be long or feel heavy; slowly wins the race, as they say.
Wherever you are on your journey to better health, know that every little step is one in the right direction to the future you deserve.

pillars to feed the growing chick. The first action to take is to initially do nothing. If the chick is not in any immediate danger from a cat or dog or out near a busy road just leave it alone. When the chicks fledge the nest, they hide in nearby vegetation and are still being fed by the parents.
If there is a cat nearby or the chick is in danger from traffic gently pick up and place up high like a tree or shrub and the parents will be able to locate it.
Another simple action to help wildlife in your garden is to put a bell on your cat. This gives birds a fighting chance as they find it very hard to sneak up on them.

“Wren”
Many are of the opinion that the Wren is our smallest bird where in actual fact it lies second from bottom, being pipped at the post by the striking Goldcrest. This however doesn’t detract from its delicate and busy nature. Like many of our smaller birds the Wren is always in a state of perpetual motion, which is especially true of its tail that flicks from horizontal to vertical every second or two. Wren’s are a lot more visible during the winter months because in many instances they are far more communal at this time of the year, gathering together in groups for both protection and heat. My local wintering flock used to use an old nest box at night but in
Countryside and wildlife matters with Rupert Butler
recent years have opted for a vacant Swallows nest that lies just beneath my gutter. The nest in question is easily accessible via a large bamboo that sits in a pot directly beneath. During the colder months I have counted nearly thirty of these tiny birds sleeping in this tiny structure. How they all fit is beyond me but those on the bottom must surely be cosy in the extreme.
Their nests are a work of art, normally a dome of moss with a tiny entrance at one side, hidden in the depths of some ivy or similar. The Wren has its own distinct place in Irish folklore due to its betrayal of St Steven, commonly referred to as the first Christian martyr. Is was
said that the Wren led his pursuers to his hiding place. As a result every St Stephens day the ‘Wren boys’ used to go out hunting this wee bird with sticks and stones. The common phrase ‘ give us a penny to bury the Wren’ was associated with these hunts as the boys in question would knock on doors looking for a penny to bury with the bird. If the household in question declined to pay, the bird was buried beside it which meant it would bring twelve months of bad luck to those inside. Although they may not have the best track record in olden times Wrens will always be welcome in my garden for they bring an energy which few can match.

NEW ARRIVALS IN THE WARDROBE
20 Tipp Echo 12-06-2024
Carrick United
On Thursday evening last, our under 14 players travelled to the picturesque sports fields in Kilmacow for what would be a game that could see them win the league with two games to spare. Going into the game unbeaten, there was a high degree of optimism in the squad and they started the game full of confidence, playing some great passing football.
Kilmacow, however were not letting the Carrick lads get it all their own way and made some threatening moves that saw Ryan Crowley being called into action between the posts on a few occasions.
Fresh from his four goals bagged in the last game against Villa, David Osazuwa Momah brought his scoring boots with him again on Thursday night and after nine minutes a slick move down the left side saw him cut in and finish the ball into the Kilmacow net.
Barely ten minutes later David once again found himself one on one with the ‘keeper and kept his cool to slot the ball past the outstretched arms of the Kilmacow number 1.
Following the second goal the
Carrick side seemed to relax a little too much and Kilmacow finished the half very strong, causing some concern for the Carrick bench.
Ten minutes from the full time whistle the home side had the ball in the Carrick net directly from a free and this seemed to be the kick that the Carrick lads needed, waking them up and making them refocus.
The Carrick mentors switched their system around and it paid dividends within a few minutes as Darragh Revusky tapped in from a Fionn Power shot. Shortly after in what was without doubt the goal of the game, a blazing
run from his own box, down the left hand sideline was cut across by Alex O’Dwyer, knocked out into the path of the onrushing Fionn Power who blasted the ball from all of thirty yards, almost lifting the Kilmacow net out of the ground.
A fantastic win for this team who are back to back under 14 B league champions and testimony to the hard work put in by Anthony and Ian’s management.

Local Elections
There was a widespread sense of delight around the electoral area of Carrick On Suir over the course of Saturday afternoon, as it became clear that the tallies meant that the electorate for the L.E.A. had returned their two sitting councillors.
Feelings around the town were very strong in the build up to the elections that the town needed the two sitting local representatives returned. These notions were solidified, as is often the case nowadays, on social media. One particular post by popular Treacy Park resident Jackie Coady, calling for the town’s people to vote for the two local candidates received hundreds of positive responses and comments. Paraphrasing the “Three Carrick Smashers” song, Jackie’s post was used as a platform for people to express their thanks to the two candidates and a strong desire to see them re-elected and continue on to
represent the community.
Late on Saturday night, the first count for the LEA saw David Dunne (SF) elected on the first count just behind incumbent Fianna Fail councillor Imelda Goldsborro who topped the polls.
After what was a hard couple of weeks for Cllr. Dunne, who lost his mother Joan after a dignified battle with illness just over a week before voting day, the relief and emotion was very visible on David’s face.
Speaking to the Tipp Echo, Cllr. Dunne thanked all who gave him the honour of representing them for the next five years and stated that he was humbled beyond words at the numbers that marked their first preference beside his name.
As Sunday unfolded and the counts came in, it became apparent that the electorate from the town and it’s surrounds had gotten their way, as the other
sitting councillor, Kieran Bourke returned on the fourth count.
This sizeable vote to re-elect Cllr. Bourke, was a reflection of his hard work on behalf of his constituents. The outgoing Cathaoirleach and member of the ETB, Housing and Infrastructure committees, Cllr. Bourke is widely recognised by the towns people as a hard worker and a proud man of his town.
The people of Carrick spoke loudly on Friday last, and even though there are many unresolved issues in the town and wider areas, without the re-election of these two men, it is most probably true to say that what is being done for our community, the town enhancement projects, and many similar projects may well be lost in the quagmire of bureaucracy and red tape that has seen us fall so far behind the rest of the county in many aspects. Thankfully these two public representatives will not let that happen.
Carrick Davins

Our u9’s had a super time at their blitz on Saturday morning showing great improvement over the past few weeks. Well done to all.

Munster Final draws huge attendances to Thurles
The Munster senior hurling final brought a full house attendance to the Cathedral Town for the clash of Limerick and Clare which was a colourful spectacle in the home of hurling.
From early morning until late into the evening the crowds enjoyed all that Thurles had to offer with the pubs, restaurants, cafes and shops enjoying a second bumper day following on from the clash of Tipperary and Cork in the round robin which also packed the stadium to capacity.
The Munster Final is now staged on rotation with Pairc UI Chaoimh and the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick also in the mix. So, it is unlikely that
Thurles will host the final again for another three years, even though it is regarded as a very special venue for the big game.
Limerick and Clare brought great colour to the town and the car parks and approach roads were all packed with cars as the supporters arrived in early and soaked up the atmosphere. There was great chat along the roads too as people made their way to the game and the stewards and Gardai had little bother in shepherding the throngs as they made their way into the stadium. By game end, the supporters were getting back to their cars and heading for home as quickly as possible having enjoyed a fine spectacle in the Field of Legends.
Election Count was a big success in Presentation Thurles
The count for the local elections was hosted in the Presentation Secondary School Sports Hall at the weekend with large attendances on both days. From early on Saturday morning until well into Sunday afternoon, political enthusiasts joined with candidates and their families for the count which was undertaken in the main by local authority staff members.
Security was tight on the door as the count venue had to be monitored and controlled, but there was a real buzz about as the tallies began to come through. It
took until after 11pm for the first counts to be announced and there was great excitement as the first candidates were elected. The count was postponed then until Sunday morning then when the remaining candidates were eventually elected. The Parents Council, staff and students of the Presentation Secondary School were on hand to provide much needed refreshments for all in attendance in the adjacent primary school assembly hall and their efforts were very welcome and appreciated by all those who had spent many hours at the count.
Abbey Road Safety Works to commence
Work is due to begin in the coming weeks to address pedestrian safety in the vicinity of Thurles Train Station and onto Abbey Road, Thurles. The development will consist of the construction of enhanced pedestrian facilities and speed reduction measures in the area around Thurles Railway Station entrance and Bohernanave Road Junction onto the R660. These areas have been problematic for many months with traffic making it very hard for pedestrians to cross from one side of the road to the other. The works are designed to create safer passage and they include.
• Provision of a new pedestrian crossing on the western side of the Railway Station entrance on the
• Tightening of the Bohernanave Road junction and installation of wider footpaths.
• General footpath improvements to provide enhanced pedestrian connectivity to the railway station.
• Associated drainage and road marking in the area. The works have been welcomed by elected representatives with Councillor Micheal Lowry describing them as “positive and welcome.”

Fr Joe Walsh Silver Jubilee
Thurles Parish Pastoral Team and members of the public have offered their sincerest congratulations to Fr. Joe Walsh on reaching his Silver Jubilee milestone.
Fr Joe has been part and parcel of the Thurles parish for a number
of years. Indeed, he is currently in his second stint in the parish where he has made an enormous contribution to the community. Fr Joe has been submerged in parish life and he received tremendous support from
parishioners in recent times following the passing of his parents. That support offered reflects the esteem and the regard in which he and his family are held – Fr Joe would be the first to offer his support to anyone locally
who needs it and he would give it freely and without equivocation.
Thurles parish has expressed heartfelt thanks and appreciation for all Fr Joe’s kindness, support and dedication over the past 25 years during a distinguished
ministry which has taken him to Upperchurch and Templemore amongst other places during his time .
May the Lord in His goodness richly bless him and give him joy as he celebrates his 25th

Tipperary Town Heritage Sculptures Celebrate Women
For over a year members of Tipperary Town’s Task Force Heritage Group have been working on a project to produce two outdoor woodcarvings to celebrate the rich heritage of Tipperary Town. Sylvia Greene, a member of the group often walked past the Post Office and noticed two tree stumps that she hoped could be transformed into heritage sculptures, and Margaret McCoy, the Post Office Manager was enthusiastic when the suggestion was made to her. Funding was received from Creative Ireland and the very talented chainsaw sculptor, Will Fogarty (Fear na Cóilte Chainsaw Sculptures) was recruited to do the work. After much discussion within the group it was agreed that the sculptures should depict women. One wood carving represents a member of Cumann Na mBan, the Irish republican women’s paramilitary organisation that was formed in 1914. The second sculpture depicts Aleen Cust, the first female veterinary surgeon in Ireland and Britain. Margaret McCoy, Post Office Manager, Tipperary Town, said that it is great to have something that represents women as this is rare in most towns. Group member Jacqui Finnan said that a Cumann na mBan wood carving would be great. “Women all over the country, including Tipperary, went largely unrecognised for their huge contribution. There were also many safe houses in Tipperary where women risked their own lives to shelter volunteers” said
Jacqui. Katherina Ryan, whose great grandmother was a member of the movement, modelled a Cumann na mBan uniform to assist Will Fogarty. It is difficult to imagine in 2024 what the lives of the women of Cumann na mBan consisted of, and the enormous sacrifices they made to achieve Irish freedom said Katherina. “My great grandmother, Catherine McGrath, Bonerea, Cappawhite, being one of them. Catherine joined the Annacarty Branch, 3rd Battalion, Tipperary 3rd Brigade of Cumann na mBan in 1919. She lived there with her husband and four children and as the house was so remote it was used constantly as a safe house for the men on active service. In her own words ‘I gave my best services to the cause night and day, as the occasion demanded’ recounted Katherina. The second sculpture represents Aleen Cust, a local woman from Cordangan, near Tipperary Town, who was Ireland’s first female veterinary surgeon in Ireland and Britain. Martin Quinn, also a member of the group said that he discovered the amazing story of Aleen Cust when he was doing research for his book, ‘Tipperary People of Great Note’. “Since then, Aleen Cust has had exposure on RTE Nationwide, a two day conference in her honour and a book to celebrate her life. A workbook in English and Irish about Aleen, was also prepared by the Tipperary Heritage Officer, Roisin O’Grady, and it has been distributed to all the schools in Tipperary. I am delighted
to see Aleen Cust recognised with a local sculpture” said Martin. The project was delayed due to the uncertainty regarding the future of the postal service in Tipperary Town, but it has now been agreed to erect the sculptures as initially planned on Post Office land where the sorting office will remain. This will happen in the coming weeks. Local residents have offered to help with planting the area around the statues. Chairperson Mary Alice O’Connor has welcomed the project. “I welcome this project reaching fruition and thank everyone for their involvement, and I especially would like to thank Heritage Officer Róisín O’Grady, who has been so supportive of our committee over the years” said Mary Alice. Sylvia Greene also added her appreciation and thanks. “We would like to thank the many people who have helped to deliver this collaborative project; Creative Ireland, Tipperary Town Revitalisation, Tipperary County Council, Will Fogarty for his amazing work, the Post Office staff, particularly Margaret McCoy, and Murgasty Residents Association for their help with landscaping” said Sylvia. The members of Tipperary Town Revitalisation Heritage Subgroup who have steered this project are; Mary Alice O’Connor (Chair), Martin Quinn, Jacqui Finnan, Sylvia Greene, Mary Margaret Ryan, Katherina Ryan, Annemarie Ryan (Shiner), Carmel Fox and the group is supported by Michael Begley.

Official Opening of River Ara Walkway
The sun shone brightly in the sky as the River Ara Walk in Tipperary Town was officially launched by Councillor Declan Burgess, Cathaoirleach of Tipperary Cahir Cashel Municipal District on the morning of Thursday 6th of June. The event was well attended by the public and a host of local community and voluntary groups. Attendees were welcomed to explore the impressive amenity before Councillor Burgess unveiled a specially made plaque to mark the occasion.
The River Ara Walk originated as a collaboration between Tipperary County Council, Tipperary Tidy Towns and Tipperary Town Chamber of Commerce, who were awarded LEADER funding from South Tipperary Development Company to develop the concept and design for the project in 2018.
The site was acquired from the Department of Education after extensive consultation with The Abbey School CBS, who shared the collective vision of the project partners, who worked with the Council and consultants VESI Environmental to develop the design and secure Planning permission from An Bord Pleanala in November 2020.
The project has created a community walkway 1km long, 3m wide, which is fully accessible and links Abbey Street to
Glenview Square along the banks of the River Ara. The walkway also includes fully inclusive amenities including a natural playground, amphitheatre, wetland area with a boardwalk traversing it, instream river improvement works, and extensive planting and biodiversity.
The river forms a natural setting for education for the local community and visitors about local biodiversity and the valuable ecological services it provides.
Councillor Burgess said that this project is part of a wide ranging series of improvements in Tipperary Town being driven by Tipperary County Council and Tipperary Town Revitalisation.
“That includes the development of the Market Yard that recently secured further funding under the Town & Village Renewal Programme to enhance the public toilets and amenities, the enhancement of Tipperary Hills, the upcoming redevelopment of the former Civic Offices at Dan Breen House as a Youth & Further Education and Training Centre and the redevelopment of the former Tipperary Courthouse & Bridewell as a development hub for adults with intellectual disabilities. It also includes the planned Soloheadbeg Heritage Trail and enhancement of Redmond Square (The Plan)” said the Cathaoirleach.
Director of Services with Tipperary County Council
Sharon Kennedy thanked and acknowledged all who had contributed to the project since its inception, including the local Tidy Towns and Chamber, and the project funders. The total project investment in the River Ara Walk was €961,625.60 and was funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development under the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund (RRDF) and the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS), with matching funding also provided by Tipperary County Council.
Sara Bourke of South Tipperary Development Company said that they were delighted to contribute to the initial design under the LEADER Programme and were thrilled to see this project come to fruition, while local Tidy Towns Chairperson Paul O’Callaghan thanked the Council and everyone associated with the development, along with TUS Supervisor Eddie Tuohy, whose staff help maintain the amenity. “We now have two amazing parks in Tipperary Town. Our River Walk Park and The Hills Town Park. We hopefully will have a third wonderful park with the proposed development of The Plan at Redmond Square.
Very few towns can boast of such recreational facilities” said Paul.

Killusty National School’s ‘Green Flag for Water’
Killusty National School recently received the ‘Green Flag for Water’. The project, run by Green Schools, An Taisce Education Unit, was a very busy and enjoyable time for the school community. Each class from junior infants to sixth class played their part in the project by making drawings, researching, taking watermeter readings, making graphs, doing experiments, detecting leaks, measuring
and recording water usage and curbing waste.
The project also focussed on the plight of many third world countries who have great difficulty procuring water for their daily needs.
Climate change has not helped their struggle. So it was with great pride that the students accepted this award and are confident that they will use the knowledge acquired to work towards a sustainable future.

Camida announced as Legacy Partners of The Junction Arts Festival 2024
Camida is proud to announce its partnership with The Junction Arts Festival, taking place in Clonmel from 28 June to 07 July. This year’s festival theme, “Legacy X Next,” celebrates the enduring power of artistic expression, highlighting the continuity and innovation that defines the creative journey from one generation to the next.
As the Legacy Partner of the festival, Camida is supporting a very special element of the programme that celebrates the life’s work of three Tipperary greats; John D. Kelly, Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin, and Una Troy.
‘Visual Emotion’ a stunning exhibition by John D. Kelly will launch on 27 June at various locations throughout the town of Clonmel including The Tipperary Museum of Hidden History and The Main Guard.
John D. Kelly, an awardwinning photographer with a career spanning 40 years, has captured significant moments from the transition of film to digital photography, and from darkrooms to the cloud. Known for his work with the Nationalist newspaper and as the official photographer of both Clonmel Junction Festival and Kilkenny Arts Festival, John has collaborated
with curator Kate Horgan to develop “Visual Emotion.” This not to be missed exhibition will feature a selection of his most impactful images.
A panel discussion on ‘The Educational Legacy of Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin’ will take place at The Main Guard on Sunday, 30 June at 1pm. The event will celebrate the legacy of Ó Súilleabháin, an inspirational lecturer at UCC and the founder of the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance at UL. The panel includes Helen Phelan, Director of the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance at UL, composers Mel Mercier and Marian Ingoldsby, and Music Generation Tipperary’s Aidan O’Donnell, who will share memories and insights into Mícheál’s influential career.
Una Kealy’s talk on playwright Una Troy will take place at the STAC Chapel, Kickham Plaza at 1pm on Monday 01 July. Una Kealy, a lecturer in English & Theatre Studies at Waterford’s South East Technological University, will present on the life and work of Una Troy. Her talk will focus on Troy’s “Mount Prospect” and the role of women playwrights and practitioners from the southeast of Ireland within the broader narrative of Irish theatre. This presentation is
part of a module called Theatre of the South East and is also kindly supported by the South East Technological University. Speaking about Camida’s Legacy Partnership with the Junction Arts Festival, David Anchell, Managing Director, Camida commented, “Camida has been proudly supporting the Junction Arts Festival for some time. It is a real highlight on the social and arts calendar here in Tipperary. This year we are particularly excited to be involved as Legacy Partners as this programme is very close to our hearts. Camida has a unique connection to each of the individuals celebrated, we have been working with John D. Kelly since our early days in business and we are very much looking forward to his extraordinary exhibition.
Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin’s legacy also holds a special place for us, as O’Sullivan Insurance, our long-time insurance provider, is owned by his brother John. Remarkably, Una Troy lived in Clonmel adjacent to our offices and like Una the team at Camida is passionate, talented and innovative, making this partnership feel destined. We are delighted to be part of it all.”

Irish Businesses Unprepared for DORA EU Act, Cybersecurity Company Warns
“Irish businesses are ill-prepared for the EU legislation, DORA, which applies from January 2025.”
According to Paul Delahunty, Chief Information Security Officer with Stryve, the Irish multi-cloud company.
Stryve is urging businesses to act now to ensure that they are compliant.
The Digital Operational Resilience Act is aimed at the financial sector and its critical ICT providers, for example, banks, investment and insurance brokers plus their ICT suppliers.
Tipperary native Paul Delahunty explains, “Christine Lagarde identified a major cyber incident as having the potential to cause a liquidity crisis across Europe.
The DORA legislation is the EU’s response to harmonise ICT risk management in Europe and mitigate this risk to the European Central Bank.”
The onus on the leadership to comply
He continues, “DORA is now in force. Companies have until January 17th 2025, to make sure they comply. That means companies affected by the Act have just seven months to get their house in order or potentially face embarrassing repercussions, financial penalties
or possible criminal sanctions.”
The legislation places the onus on the company leadership to comply with the Act. Therefore, members of the C-Suite and management teams may be personally responsible.
Paul said, “We are likely to see heavy ‘GDPR-like’ penalties applied from 2025 for companies who do not make an effort to comply. DORA is a risk-based approach where ICT and financial entities must take steps to mitigate ‘reasonably identifiable’ cybersecurity risks. Companies are not expected to have a crystal ball or predict every possibility; however, they are expected to put sensible measures in place to reduce risk.”
According to a survey of Irish ICT business leaders conducted by Stryve (Jan 2023)
— 54 per cent are not aware of the legislation — 82 per cent of respondents do not understand their responsibility under the Digital Operational Resilience Act. — 83 per cent are unfamiliar with the five pillars of the legislation. — 63 per cent admit they are not well prepared for the Act. The DORA framework outlines the standards for ICT risk management and operational resilience across the European financial sector.
Stryve is reminding businesses to act now to understand and reduce the risk. The cyber security specialists have free resources available on its website www. stryvesecure.com for more information.

Limerick juggernaut makes little of Banner roar - who can stop them? Tipp on manager search -again!!
By Noel Dundon (Tipperary Media)
History made in Munster then with Limerick hitting six titles in succession - a remarkable achievement for a team of juggernauts which seems to be slowly rolling into gear once again with the intention of adding to their history making feats
Who can stop John Kiely’s men now? That is the big question Most would have placed Clare as the firm favourites to give the champions a bloodied nose Truth was, they barely laid a glove on them Dress this final up any way you like, but the reality is, Limerick won it comfortably and could have been much further in front when the final whistle was sounded
Granted, Nickie Quaid made a few saves and Clare struck the upright as well, but these were reminders to Limerick of what could happen rather than real affronts to their title In fact, many of those chances resulted in errors in the Limerick defence rather than anything Clare really created - perhaps the same could be said of the goal before half time which gave the Bannermen a real shot in the arm, just when the Limerick men had punched them in the stomach with a flurry of points Clare needed everything to go right for them in this game, and a lot to go wrong for Limerick But, a lot went wrong for the challengers instead and the missed opportunities from open play and from placed balls, will just not cut it at the top level When you are encountering a side as good as Limerick, you have to be firing on all cylinders - Clare were not The early threat of Shane O’Donnell was snuffed out- why? Because Clare were simply unable to get the ball in to him Limerick claimed their customary grip on the middle third and just suffocated the Clare men as they milled and thrashed about, crashing into players, horsing fellas over and seemed over intent on engaging in physicalities rather than actually playing ball - Peter Duggan a case in point So trying to bully Limerick will work then? Eh no
Think of that period when Limerick were struggling in the first half - who were the ones who got them firing? Kyle Hayes, Declan Hannon and Diarmuid Byrnes - the half back line Gearoid Hegarty extended his big paw twicetwo scores David Reidy and Cathal O’Neill were all over the field with legs to burn - and Clare tried to bully them? No, tactically, Clare got this one wrong and that will surely irk them because in truth they could have mixed it with
Clare had they adopted a more conventional approach
John Kiely will be happy with the outcome of this game, not just because Limerick won a history-making sixth title in succession, but because there is still much for him to work on in the weeks to come They still have gears left to explore and as they drive towards five they will leave nothing to chance Only an off-day of pretty dramatic proportions will deny them the Liam MacCarthy Cup now For footballs sake
Another defeat for the Tipperary senior footballers in the Tailteann Cup brought the curtain down on a pretty dismal season it has to be said And, it has also signalled the end of the Paul Kelly era as the search for a new manager begins - a second in twelve months
Tipperary would not be an attractive proposition right now - there were problems enough for the Football Board twelve months ago as they scoured the country trying to get somebody to take on the team And, events on-field since will not have helped the reputation of the squad
The pity is that Kelly and his management team had introduced a decent smattering of new blood and were this work to be dismissed over the winter months, it would be a great shame Hopefully that will not be the case
On a more positive note, any potential new manager coming into the set-up would know that things cannot get any worse So, perhaps there is an element of somebody taking a chance and embarking upon a journey which could lead to somewhere The priority has to be to get out of division 4 of the Allianz National Football League - let’s be honest, provincial and All-Ireland honours will not be on the agenda, nor should they be After the season just completed, they don’t deserve to be More from THE VIEW anon Don‘t miss it

Slattery and Michael Ryan, while 3rd spot went to Billy Phelan, Sean O’Dea and Terry O’Brien on 98 points.
The Ladies Thursday 12 Hole Stableford saw Mary Britton secure another win on 23 points.
Thursday also saw Captain Mark Dillon and Lady Captain Paula Spillane compete in the Munster Captain’s Competition where, despite a strong showing from each, they were not to take the coveted prize.
Friday, our Mixed Team played away Templemore in the Mixed Competition. Michael O’Donnell, Paudie Lahart, Willie McGarry, Patrick Johnson, Teresa O’Brien, Ann O’Dea, Margo Condon and Phil Whyte put up a fantastic display but unfortunately we lost 3:1 to Templemore, who were fantastics opponents, and we wish them the very best in the next round. Saturday saw an influx of new and eager young faces as junior golfers from 6 - 14 signed up for coaching with Super Coach Paudie Lahart. There was a fantastic atmosphere as Paudie put his new young charges through their paces. A true measure of the success of the session was the general disappointment of the proteges to discover that time was up for the day. We are looking forward to seeing them all again next week. Saturday also saw the Heffernan family from Kildare and Dublin return to Slievenamon for their Annual Grudge Match and a
chance to compete for the coveted Heffernan Perpetual Trophy. There was high goof humour, mixed with a ruthless competitiveness (as Heather Bailey can attest), with Glen Heffernan eventually being declared winner, for the second year running. A slap up feast in the Coffee House afterwards ensured familial relations remain undamaged, and plans are already afoot for next year’s rematch. Sunday saw our Ladies host the Carrigan Cup Competition, with prizes sponsored by O’Dwyers Golf Store. Our winner was Joan Morrisey, with Marian Power in 2nd, Marie Quirke 3rd, Best Gross Paula Spillane, Front 9 Ann O’Dea and Back 9 Helen Clinton. The ladies also took the opportunity to surprise Lady Captain Paula Spillane with a birthday cake, which information she had thought had been kept under wraps! And finally to our Pierce Purcell Team. What can we say. Over the past 2 months, they have brought us on an incredible adventure as they took one scalp after the next to reach the Quarter Finals of the Pierce Purcell Competition. Today they played away to Cahir Park - last year’s All Ireland Semi Finalists. After a nervous start, they fought back, played some really incredible golf and never let up for a moment. The final score of 4-0 to Cahir in no way reflects the closeness of the matches, the quality of the golf or the heart and commitment of our players, and we are incredibly proud of them. What a ride!
A Golfer’s Prayer
May my Swing be straight and the ball fly far, May my round be blessed with no worse than Par. Cahir Park Club Classic

Captain Don Quill thanked Gary Morrison and Morrison BMW Cahir for the very generous Sponsorship and Gary in reply, stated he and Morrison BMW Cahir are very happy to be associated with the Classic and Cahir Park G.C.
A 3 person Champagne Scramble with 2 scores to count on all Holes, the overall Winning Team of James Smith, John Smith and Don Lonergan (Slievenamon G.C.) scored fantastic 102pts.
The All-Ladies Team category was won by Fionnuala Foley, Maura Lyons and Antoinette Dougan, (Clonmel G.C.) with 89pts.
The Mixed Team category was won by Niall Morrison, Yvonne Morrison and John Morrison with
93Pts.
There was a Hole in One shot on 5th Hole by Jimmy Flynn on the first day of the Classic.
Ten cards were pulled for additional prizes and so, thirty further golfers were celebrating their luck.
A wonderful evening was enjoyed in the Clubhouse on Sunday, further to the enjoyable Club Classic and the success of two of the Men’s Teams on the day. Interclub Competitions
On Sunday afternoon, following the last team playing in the Club Classic, the Junior Cup Team set off v. Tramore G.C. Cahir Park was under the Management of Eoin Ahearne and Susan Carey and the team won comfortably 4:1.
The Junior Cup Matches were closely followed by the Pierce Purcell matches v. Slievenamon G.C. Cahir Park was managed by John Morrissey and Tom Hickey and again the home team was successful.
Congratulations to both Teams, Panels and Managers and good wishes for success in the next round.
Ladies Open Day, Thursday 13th June.
