Former Mayor Vera Hewitt Street in 1966, a business that quickly became a cornerstone of everyday life in Clonmel. Generations of customers passed through its doors for brown bread, sausage rolls and cakes, but they often stayed just as much for the conversation. Vera had the rare ability to make each person feel as though they had all the time in the world. Her commitment to public life was equally enduring. She served twice as Mayor of Clonmel and was deeply involved in civic and voluntary organisations, including the Clonmel Chamber of Commerce, the South Tipperary Mental Health Association, the Tidy Towns Committee and the Clonmel Bianconi Twinning Committee. The passing of Vera Hewitt marks the end of a life that seemed, in many ways, inseparable from the daily rhythm of Clonmel itself. For decades she was a familiar figure in the town — behind the counter of her bakery, at civic events, or quietly involved in the work of improving the community she loved. Born Vera Hogan in Limerick, she arrived in Glenconnor, Clonmel, at just ten days old and would remain rooted there for the rest of her life. From modest beginnings in a thatched cottage, she grew into one of the town’s most recognisable and respected citizens. Those who met her rarely forgot her warm nature, her ready conversation, or the unmistakable sound of her laughter. With her husband Billy, she founded the bakery on Mitchell

stories. Her life was one of service, enterprise and kindness — the sort of life that quietly strengthens a town. Clonmel is richer for having known her, and poorer for her loss.
