Clonmel celebrates historic Olympic Bronze Medal for Daire Lynch and Philip Doyle

When Daire and Philip crossed the finish line in third place, securing the bronze medal, the plaza erupted in joy.

The heart of Clonmel was brimming with pride and excitement as local rowing hero Daire Lynch, along with his teammate Philip Doyle who hails from Banbridge, Newry, Co Down clinched a bronze medal in the Men’s Heavyweight Double Sculls final at the Paris Olympics on Thursday morning.

This monumental victory marks the first Olympic medal for Tipperary in 92 years, harking back to Nenagh’s Bob Tisdall’s gold in the 400m hurdles at the 1932 Los Angeles Games.

Kickham Plaza in Clonmel was transformed into a vibrant hub of celebration, with thousands of residents and supporters from across Tipperary gathering to watch the race live on a big screen. The atmosphere was festive and electric, enhanced by the baking summer sun and the provision of free ice cream, tea, and coffee.

Mayor Cllr Michael Murphy kicked off the event, urging the crowd to cheer passionately for Daire and Philip. From the race’s start, the plaza resonated with the cheers and shouts of an enthusiastic crowd. As the boats powered down the course, the tension was palpable. When Daire and Philip crossed the finish line in third place, securing the bronze medal, the plaza erupted in joy. Romania claimed the gold while the Netherlands took silver.

Speaking after the race, Daire Lynch expressed his gratitude for the local support: “There’s a huge Irish support, a load of people came from Clonmel, my mother’s family is all here, my dad’s family, so it’s great to see them all here. I kind of stayed away from it all for the last week, stuck to my own bubble, but it will be good to see them now. I saw the big screen in Kickham Plaza that’s down at the

Clonmel View from the

end of the town. They didn’t want to send too much to me, which was good of them, they didn’t want to make me too nervous over the whole thing, so it will be good to look back on that now.”

Among the crowd at Kickham Plaza was Jimmy Fennessy, Daire’s first rowing coach from Clonmel Rowing Club. He beamed with pride: “I’m very, very proud of him, his family, the town of Clonmel, and more importantly our Clonmel Rowing Club. Our wee club, The Island, is 150 years old and boy is this some achievement. We did have another person years ago who was on the periphery of the Olympic squad, Dr. Pat O’Callaghan’s son Hugh. He was our idol growing up, but this has gone to a whole new level, and Daire deserves every single thing he has got. I have a saying: the three A’s application, ability, and attitude and he had the whole lot in abundance.”

Paul Nugent, PRO of Clonmel Rowing Club, echoed these sentiments: “Today is a memorable day for the people of Clonmel, Tipperary, and Ireland. We thank the people of Clonmel for coming out in such large numbers to enjoy this historic occasion.”

Mayor Cllr Michael Murphy also shared his congratulations: “As Mayor of Clonmel Borough District, HUGE CONGRATS to Daire and Philip. The massive turnout on the Plaza cheering you on was phenomenal. We are so proud of you, Olympic Medallist. Thanks to everyone who turned up in huge numbers, to Carol Creighton and her team

for the superb organisation, and Tipperary County Council for sponsoring the free ice cream and coffee!”

Cllr Richie Molloy added, “What a fantastic bronze medal for Ireland. Major congratulations to Clonmel’s Daire Lynch and his rowing partner Philip Doyle. This is a fantastic achievement, and Clonmel, Tipperary, and Ireland are so proud. The community spirit on display this morning at Kickham Plaza was incredible.”

The well wishes and congratulations flooded in from all directions. One enthusiastic fan said, “Proud of ya lads, they could hear me screaming up in the high Alps.” Another added, “Brilliant, so thrilled for you, Daire.” Yet another supporter remarked, “Massive achievement, well done guys, especially Daire from our native hometown. Great to watch it at the plaza. An historic day.”

As the crowd began to disperse, the elation and pride were evident on every face. Clonmel was alive with the celebration of this historic achievement. Well done to the town in putting on the

event to show support with the public of all ages turning out in large numbers for the two rowers Daire and Philip , a bit of history made the first Olympic medal won by a Tipperary resident in

One message summed up the sentiment perfectly: “Thank you, Daire. You’ve put Clonmel Town back on the map. Well done, and we hope you enjoy every second of your extraordinary achieve

This historic moment will be remembered and cherished by the people of Clonmel, Tipperary, and all of Ireland for years to come, celebrating the remarkable accomplishments of Daire Lynch

Clonmel Rower Wins Bronze medal at the Olympics

The architects of the Plaza will be delighted to see their vision of a bustling town square brought to life.

It’s a little bit surreal to be writing a report “Clonmel Rower Wins Bronze medal at the Olympics.”

Perhaps I had drifted off into a trance when I went for a long row up to Sandybanks and was only brought back to reality by a splash of water into the face from Andy Ryan’s oar.

But no, I wasn’t daydreaming. It really did happen on the 1st August 2024 at the Vaires-SurMarne Olympic rowing course.

Daire Lynch from CRC rowing with Philip Doyle from Belfast created a little bit of history when they won the bronze medal in the mens heavyweight 2x on Thursday morning.

In a wonderful initiative, Clonmel Borough District Council organised a big screen in Kickham Plaza for the semi final and final so that the people of Clonmel

could all come down to watch the race together.

Blessed with a beautiful sunny day, the Plaza was well attended for the semifinal, but for the final it was jam packed. The architects of the Plaza will be delighted to see their vision of a bustling town square brought to life. Local media along with RTE were in attendance to record the occasion and in scenes reminiscent of Italia’90, the mayor of Clonmel rallied the troops and whipped the crowd into a frenzy of excitement before the race started at 10.30am.

The six boats aligned themselves on the starting pontoon waiting for the lights to go green just like they do it in Formula 1.

And off they went with Spain and Romania taking the early lead.

Daire Lynch and Philip Doyle were ensconced midfield alongside the Dutch, the current World

Champions and silver medallists from Tokyo. 2000m is a long race when you row at the intensity that these crews were going and we were satisfied with where the Irish boat was positioned. At the 1000m mark ,USA, the Netherlands and Ireland were starting to make inroads into the Spanish, but the Romanians remained steadfastly in front. At 1500m the Dutch momentarily moved alongside the Romanians who responded with a push to get their noses back in front again. Daire and Philip were engaged in a battle with USA for the bronze medal position. At the Olympics nobody wants to finish 4th. Just ask Eamon Coughlan. With the

needle on the rev counter gone way into the red zone Daire and Philip somehow managed to break free from the Americans. Crossing the line it was Romania 1st, Netherlands 2nd and Ireland 3rd. A historic bronze medal for our boys in the boat Daire Lynch and Philip Doyle. The first Olympic medal to come back to Tipperary for 92 years to the day since Bob Tisdall won the 400m hurdles in Los Angeles in 1932. The large crowd gathered at the Plaza were elated with the result. When the Irish tricolour was raised up the flagpole, tears streamed down the eyes of Clonmel supporters as they came to terms with the magnitude of the

occasion. Many of the Clonmel supporters in Paris stayed around for Fridays racing, another red letter day for Irish rowing when three Irish boats contested three finals.

Red hot favourites in everybody’s eyes except Paul O’Donovans, the lightweight 2x made history winning the gold medal by clear water. Paul O’Donovan thus became the first Irish sportsperson to win medals in three different Olympics.

Valent Sinkovic celebrated his 36th birthday in style winning the mens coxless pair with his brother Martin. Displaying super human determination, the Sinkovic brothers powered home

like an express train snatching the gold medal from the GB boat in the last five strokes. The rowing at the Olympics provided us with the full gamut of emotions- joy, heartbreak, close finishes, parental pride and for Daire Lynch a fairytale ending to a journey that began at CRC in 2014. Daire and Philip were gracious in their acceptance of all the plaudits and wished to acknowledge the helping hand they got along the way from their coaches including Jimmy Fennessy and Pat Kinsella. Great ambassadors for their town and country, you couldn’t but be proud of these titans of Olympic rowing.

His former classmates from St Mary’s CBS and the High School in Clonmel travelled to Paris to support Daire and they weren’t disappointed with his magnificent achievement and finding time afterwards for the group photo.

What’s next for your Mind?

How are you feeling right now?

Do you find yourself worrying about the future?

For many, there is a feeling of much uncertainty in the world today. This can affect your health on all levels and lead to feelings such as anxiety, stress and fear – all preventing you from being able to move forward. However, there is no need for endless worry – you are much more in control than you think.

Here are a couple of tips to help support you:

Poositive Thinking

You are the creator of your life, whether you realise this or not. Everything starts with a thought – when you think it, feel it, speak it and then behave accordingly. It’s important to plant the seeds of thought that you want to harvest in your life.

If you constantly focus on the negatives, of yourself and of others, then you will notice that these are magnified and then become ingrained into your belief system. So, when you’re aware you are doing this, it’s important to replace the negative thoughts or seeds with ones that are consistent with the future you want to attain. Positive thinking will improve your life in all areas.

Regular ‘You’ Time

When stressed and busy, the last thing you feel you can do is to take some time out to relax – but this is exactly what is needed. Just like a phone needs to be charged regularly and fully in order to work, you also need to recharge your body as well as your mind. If your mind is constantly cluttered with thoughts and worries, then there is no possible way to think clearly and make good decisions.

Taking time to build a routine practice to clear your mind is possibly one of the most important things you can do for yourself. You can achieve this from simple breathing techniques or by doing the Meditation on Twin Hearts. This Meditation has been scientifically proven to calm your emotions and enhance your positive thinking. When done regularly, you will very quickly notice

the positive change in your outlook, your mood and even the behaviour of the people around you.

Once armed with these techniques, you will find that you begin to reprogram yourself which will lead to more peace of mind and happiness. This will result in positive outcomes in your life, including improved health on all levels.

Cashel Girls ready for All-Ireland challenge

Cashel’s sporting eyes will face towards Croke Park on Sunday next, when four of the King Cormac’s Camogie club players line out on All Ireland final day, to play in the Junior final for Tipperary against Laois.

It will be a huge day for the players and their families when Grace Moloney, Aoife O Brien and the Fahie twins Anna and Lily line out, and hopefully bring home the Kay Mills Cup. The Juniors have had a long tough road to get to this final, but have risen to the occasion every time they were asked. Playing in Division 2B of the Intermediate league, they more than held their own against teams that were supposedly ranked a Division higher than them, before coming

Rock of Cashel

out of their group to play a strong Armagh team in the semi final. Although they had beaten their Northern opponents by 11 points in the group stage, the semi final was a much closer affair with just a single point between the teams at the final whistle. There will be a big Cashel crowd travelling for the final and there’s no doubt that the girls will be deserving champions of they can pull off one more win against the women from the O Moore County. We’re all looking forward to seeing the Cup in the City of the Kings in the weeks ahead.

announces Heritage

week events and urges tourists to book early

Heritage Week is fast approaching at the famous Rock of Cashel, and the organisers have announced details of two events that will take place in August, urging people interested in attending to book early and ensure their place. The first event announced this week is a talk called ‘Pilgrimage in Medieval Tipperary’, which will be given by Dr. Louise Nugent on Saturday 17th August at 2pm.

Louise Nugent is an archaeologist, researcher and author specializing in medieval pilgrimage and pilgrim souvenirs. In 2010 she completed a doctoral thesis Pilgrimage in Medieval Ireland

AD 600-1600 at the school of Archaeology at University College Dublin. She curates the blog Pilgrimage in Medieval Ireland and is the author of the

book Journeys of Faith: Stories of Pilgrimage from Medieval Ireland.

The second event of Heritage Week 2024, are Bilingual tours (English and Irish) on the Rock of Cashel. Turais threoraithe dhátheangacha ar Charraig Phádraig. Join Mairéad, Sinéad and Pádraig for a bilingual guided tour (English and Irish) of the Rock. These tours will take place on Thursday 22 August and Friday 23 August at 12pm. These tours are available to everybody, free of charge, and all are welcome, but once again, to ensure you don’t miss out, you should book ahead. For bookings, people are asked to visit the social media pages of the famous monument, and use the links to the Eventbrite site where they will facilitate the bookings.

Cashel’s shoe buyers were left in a state of shock this weekend when one of the longest serving shops in the town announced that it would be closing its doors for the last time in just a couple of weeks. Noel Fahy made the announcement in a video on his social media page, in which he said that after almost forty years in business at the top of Main Street, he had decided it was now time to retire to focus on other things.

The shop is almost a town institution. Sitting as it does at the top of Main Street and Canopy Street, it was for four decades the place to go to find the best in footwear fashion. Customers came from not only the town, but from many places around as Noel and his staff always had the bets in style. But they were always very practical too, and many children shod for the first time after Noel or one of his staff had made the first measure of their feet. And Noel thanked those staff members

especially in his announcement, saying that they felt more like a family than a staff for all that time. In the end, the longevity of the shop came to an end in a combination of time for Noel, but also the changing tastes and shopping patterns of customers. The creeping domination of the online business world, accelerated by the Covid years, has changed peoples shopping habits, and made it harder for the High Street stores to compete. It can at times be impossible to offer the sheer range that can be found browsing the internet. But it is also a pity, because there is nothing like the personal touch, the piece of sage advice when buying, or simply the banter and chat in a shop, which was always a part of Noel’s sales technique.

There will be one final sale, and no doubt lots of bargains to be had before the door shuts, and Noel reminded customers who are holding vouchers for the shop,

to come in and make sure they are spent. The town will wish Noel well, and hope he enjoys the

Cashel connection to Olympic champion for 100 years ago

Paddy returned home to a rapturous welcome back in the States

With the Paris Olympics in full flow at the moment, and the historic achievements of the current Irish team captivating the public in every county of the island, it takes one Cashel family back in time, to 1920 in fact, when one of their more famous antecedents took home a gold medal.

In the colours of his adopted country, the United States.

The O Dwyer family, from the Old Road in Cashel, have always been associated with sports. The patriarch of the family John, once ran a sports betting shop in town, ably assisted by his extensive knowledge of sports of all kinds, and of course in more recent times, his son Ryan famously won provincial hurling titles with both his home county of Tipperary and his adopted county of Dublin, when he lives and works. But over one hundred years in the past, the family’s great grandfather Paddy Ryan, also lined out for his second home, when he successfully represented America in the hammer throw in the 1920 Summer Games in Antwerp in Belgium.

Paddy was born in Limerick in 1883 and took up the sport of throwing the hammer, and other weight lighting sports at a relatively tender age. Immensely strong, he won his first national hammer throwing title at the tender age of nineteen in 1902,

when beat the great Tom Kiely, who was the foremost thrower in the country at that time. Kiely himself was an athlete worthy of recognition, as just two years later, he represented Ireland at the Olympic Games in 1904, which were held in St Louis, America.

Both the British and American Olympic teams offered to sponsor Kiely to attend the games, but he was a committed Irish nationalist and paid his own way to the Games, thus representing Ireland, almost two decades before the nascent Free State was born. And he did it in style, winning the All Round event, which would be similar to the modern Decathlon, became the first multi event Olympic winner in history.

But back to Paddy Ryan, and his success in the hammer against one of the legends of Irish sport. In 1910, he emigrated to the United States, and continued his sporting escapades. In 1911, he placed third in the Association of American Universities title competition, and improved to second a year later in 1912. But he finally came out on

top in 1913, winning the title, and later that year established a world record in the Hammer throw that was to last for 25 years, and 45 years as an American record. Over the next nine years, Paddy won the AAU titles every year with the exception of 1918, when he was in Europe with the American Army after they entered World War One on the side of the Allies.

His chances of Olympic Glory had to wait until later in his career however. When Paddy went to American, he worked as a labour foreman, but hadn’t established citizenship by 1912, so was unable to compete in those games that were held in Stockholm in Sweden. He likely would have been a shoo- in to make the team for the 1916 Games, but they were scheduled to take place in Berlin in Germany, and were cancelled because of ongoing German participation in World War One. So, he continued to wait, and finally got his chance in Antwerp in 1920. There, he entered into two events, the Hammer throw which would have been his speciality, but also another throwing event at that time, the 56 lb throw, which was featuring at the 1920 Games for the first and only time. In the

Hammer throw, Paddy took the Gold medal, beating off his closest rival, multiple Olympian Carl Johan Lind from Sweden, but the huge margin of 14 ft, completely dominating the event. In the fifty-six-pound throw later in the Games, he added a silver medal, beaten by his American team mate Pat Mc Donald, and having Lind behind him once again in the Bronze position. Paddy returned home to a rapturous welcome back in the States, but having reached the pinnacle of his chosen sport, retired from throwing just

over a year later, after once again winning the American title in 1921. Always a homebird, Paddy was often said to have been asked while away, “what part of America was he from”, to which he’s answer “Limerick”. Not even Ireland, but Limerick. He returned home to settle down, and lived out the last four decades of his life near the village of Pallasgreen, where a statue now stands to commemorate and remind people of their famous son’s

achievements. One of those was to have a family of children, which included a daughter Bernadette, the youngest of five daughters, who eventually married John O Dwyer of Cashel, and finally finished up in the Old Road. John and Bernie ended up having the own family, and they are rightly proud of the “Irish Whale”, Paddy Ryan, who became a Golden champion all those years ago.

Saint Nicholas’ Boxing Club Secure Funding

After many years of uncertainty and speculation, the news that Saint Nicholas’ boxing club had received funding to secure the purchase of the parish hall that they have operated out of for decades was met with much jubilation amongst the public in the town.

Speaking on the matter on Wednesday of last week Cllr.

Carrick Swan

Notes

David Dunne said that it was a real pleasure to be able to have assisted the club alongside fellow local councillor Kieran Bourke with the matter and praised all in the club for their hard work, dedication and doggedness that saw them prevail and at last have a permanent home that they can call their own. The grant

of €95,000 will see the club, which has produced several all-Ireland winners, Irish national representatives and hundreds of top class athletes down through the years, be in a position to take charge of the building and will go towards the refurbishment of the roof on the building.

For many years the hall was also the site of the kitchen of the old meals on wheels organisation which sadly ceased operating in August of 2018 and was replaced by the Meals Assistance programme operation out of the Community Centre in Carrick beg.

Carrick Swan Open

New Facilities

The hall has always been seen as the home of the boxing club and now, with this fantastic grant, St Nicholas’ Boxing club can now proudly announce it as its own.

In the same week that the club announced this brilliant news, one of the real stars of the club, young Rylee Finn was out representing Ireland in the European championships once again. The result, against the Russian boxer did not go in favour of the young Carrick lad, but Rylee has a lot more to offer, there are great days ahead for this young elite athlete who is a credit to his club, his parents and our town.

Explore Carrick On Suir

be highlighting several of the events taking place and speaking to some of the organisers of the various different aspects of the day.

The first event that takes place, aptly enough, does so around the very centre of our town, the river that has proved a commercial and economic lifeline to our ancestors since the towns foundation.

On Friday night last, hundreds gathered in Pairc Na nEalai for the official opening and blessing of their new training and wall ball area. The blessing was performed by Father Jimmy, and many present wished the ever popular priest well and expressed their sadness as he prepares to leave the parish for pastures anew.

The young cygnets played a blitz on the evening, showing off their newly acquired skills. Following on from the blitz the kids were presented with goodie bags by Swan county players Stefan Tobin, Aaron and Emma

and it gives a great incentive to all of the youngsters coming up through the age groups to see their fellow club members succeed at inter county level.

On August the 17th a fun filled, exciting day will take place around our ancient town. Running in conjunction with national heritage week the event has something for everybody. With the works around the blue way and the Castle Park area nearing completion this day of celebration, focusing on our heritage and culture promises to highlight all that is special and unique about our area. The launch of the event takes place on the day before, Friday 16th of August in the town hall where a four week long exhibition by Carrick Camera Club entitled “Carrick On Suir and its hinterland will be unveiled. Over the coming weeks, in the lead up to the event we will

Mr Brian White and Mr Ralph O Callaghan will be hosting a 2 km guided walk, commencing at the car park of Dillon Bridge from 10 a.m. on the Saturday morning. The walk will include detailed accounts of life as a boatman on the ancient waterway. Out of all aspects of the town, the river Suir’s history, and the life endured by those who sought out their living from it’s bounty is one of the most important to know and understand. Many families have history stretching back hundreds

of years on the river and the knowledge of the water, it’s dangers and it’s secrets have been passed down through the generations. The current generation have sadly missed out on the sight of dozens of home made Carrick Cots gliding up or down the river on incoming tidal waters, nets stretched between two cots, with skilled boatsmen holding a side each, waiting for the tell tale pull of the mighty salmon, the silence of the oarsmen as the glided seemingly effortlessly and then the frantic paddling and net hauling as tension is felt on the many times fixed net and the men attempt to capture their elusive prey. This starting event for the day promises a peak into the lives, the struggles and the hardships faced by these boatmen and is a must for anybody interested in learning about their local history.

Tipperary ETB and Sue Ryder House in Nenagh collaborate on new book

: Residents at Sue Ryder House in Nenagh launched a book of their own writings at a special event hosted by Tipperary Education and Training Board (ETB) in June. The book, called Vision and Verse, came about after Sue Ryder House contacted Tipperary ETB to organise digital skills classes. The ‘Get to Know Your Smartphone’ class was widely enjoyed by residents, but it soon became apparent that the residents had much more to offer through their storytelling and singing. It was decided to compile

these stories into a book, which generated great excitement for each class. Nuala Gallagher, Tipperary ETB tutor, supported by resource worker Liz Duggan, thoroughly enjoyed encouraging the residents each week to create their pieces for the book. Mary McDonnell, Manager of Sue Ryder House, facilitated the class which took place in the main lounge of the building. Each week, different people joined the class to engage or simply listen to the stories. The result of this engagement is the beautiful book of short stories and poetry, Vision and Verse. Although the

course has finished, the residents still meet every Tuesday to share stories, be a listener, or just have a chat. This demonstrates how much everyone enjoyed the class.

To launch the book, a wonderful event was held at Sue Ryder House in June, where the contributors to the book had the opportunity to read some of their stories and poems with pride.

Mary McDonnell also presented a birthday cake to resident Ellen O’Brien, who turned 101 the day before the launch of the book. It was a beautiful event, and Tipperary ETB was delighted to be part of it.

SEAN HOGANS ‘Flying Column’ First March Annual Commemoration

On a January day in 1921 a group of men in trench coats and caps, all armed, made their way through the South Tipperary countryside. They had started out on their March at the farm of Helen Prendergast which was located just outside the rural village of Ballylooby. The Prendergast farm house was part of a secret network of IRA ‘Safe Houses’ which were located throughout this part of South Tipperary, the area known as the Galtee Vee valley, stretching from the Galtee Mountains to the Knockmealdowns. For generations the flame of rebellion burned bright in these parts and many an Irish rebel had sought refuge in this part of South Tipperary .Less than 2 miles from Prendergasts is Drumlemmon where the ‘White boys’ agrarian movement first formed. It was just fields from there that a new generation of fenians, the men of the Tipperary ‘Flying Columns’ of Dinny Lacey and Sean Hogan

would carry out a successful ambush of crown forces at Hylands Cross on 23rd Aprill 1921.Just a mile from Prendergasts the famous’ seithrun keating’ was born at Burgess. He would be forced like many an Irish man to go ‘on the run’, his crime against the crown was collecting the ancient history of Ireland at a time when they were attempting to destroy our culture. For hundreds of years the British had attempted to subdue this part of Tipperary and in each generation brave men and women stepped forward to stand against Tyranny. Now in 1921 the latest in a long line of patriotic Irish men to defy the crown and attempt to rid their land of the Tyranny of English misrule and occupation, were mobilising, and had organised themselves into highly mobile units of fighting men. In Limerick the first ‘Flying Column ‘had been formed led by Donnacha O Hannigan in 1920, and here in Tipperary the first

Column had being in operation since September 1920 under the leadership of the great Dinny Lacey. This group of men now marching between Ballylooby and Clogheen in the shadow of the Knockmealdown mountains was the newly formed no.2 ‘Flying Column of the 3rd Tipperary Brigade IRA.’ Their leader was Sean Hogan and Dan Breen accompanied them having been sent to help get this new Column organised. Hidden Boithrins, mass paths, lanes surrounded by double ditches, and fields were their preferred route, but they also marched along the public roads. Led by Dan Breen and Sean Hogan two of the most wanted men in the then ‘British Empire’ this group of Irish men were ready to face the British and their hirelings of the RIC. That day in January history was being made as this was the very first time this newly formed ‘Flying Column’ had marched under arms. Their destination that

day was Fitzgeralds of ‘Kilinure’ where they were looking forward to supper. Catherine Fitzgerald had two sons in the Local Active Service Unit of the IRA Paddy and Bill. Their home like most of the ‘Safe Houses’ was hidden at the end of a long boithrin and the rolling hills in this part of the county gave good natural protection and cover to the IRA to come and go and like a lot of the ‘Safe Houses’ it was in an area that was friendly and supportive of the Republican cause. In close proximity to Fitzgeralds were other Safe Houses and homes of members of the local active service unit. As this was the first time this ‘Flying Column ‘had marched under arms, Dan Breen and Sean Hogan were taking no chances and the local Unit or company of the IRA were all on guard duty to enable the men to relax and enjoy the Fitzgeralds hospitality. Maurice MacGrath had been chosen by Dan to organise the lookouts and Maurice

himself stood guard with the men in the fields around Fitzgeralds. The safety of the wanted leaders and the entire Column was now the local Active Service Units responsibility. All approach roads were watched. The Column had just sat to eat when Maurice MacGrath rushed in to warn the men that the ‘Tans’ were coming across the fields from the Cahir direction. Dan Breen ordered the candles in Fitzgeralds to be quenched and directed local man Tommy Ryan and Maurice to lead the escape. Using a mass path and the cover of the high ditches surrounding an old 12 century church site, the ‘Flying Column’ made good their escape passing the field they trained in the ‘Ban Doite’on the way.

On Saturday next the 10th of August we will have our 3rd Commemoration to honour Sean Hogan’s ‘Flying Column’, the local Active Service Unit of the IRA, and the women of the ‘Safe houses’, who when terror stalked

our land, they stood against tyranny and fought the British out of Tipperary. We are honoured to have one of Irelands top Historians, Dr Tomas Mac Conmara to give the oration this year. Dr Mac Conmara has written extensively on this period and two of his six books include ‘The time of the Tans’ and ‘The Scarriff Martyrs’. He is a regular on the ‘Today Show’ and is an award-winning oral Historian. The Commemoration will begin at 2.30pm with a march following part of the route Sean Hogan, Dan Breen and the ‘Flying Column’ took all those years ago. It is fascinating that today over 100 years later the same boithrins and much of the landscape has not changed and you are ‘walking in the footsteps’ of the ‘Flying Column’ it is a ‘Landscape of Revolution’ and it is a unique experience to stand where those men passed all those years ago. This event is non-political and all are welcome. Beir bua.

The Mercantile Bathroom & Tile Company

The Timeless Elegance of Brushed Copper Taps and Showers

In the realm of interior design, the finishing touches often make the most significant impact, and when it comes to bathroom fixtures, brushed copper taps and showers stand out as a prime example. Aesthetic Appeal Brushed copper taps and showers offer a subtle yet striking aesthetic that can transform the look of a bathroom. The brushing process gives the metal a soft matte appearance that contrasts beautifully with high-gloss and polished surfaces. This texture adds depth and interest, making the fixtures a focal point in both contemporary and traditional settings. Consider pairing them with complementary materials and colors to enhance their visual impact. Neutral tones, natural stone, and wood finishes work exceptionally well, creating a harmonious and inviting space. Brushed copper taps and showers are more than just functional elements in a home; they are statement pieces that

reflect a sense of style and sophistication. Their unique combination of beauty & durability makes them an excellent choice for those looking to elevate the design of their bathroom. Whether aiming for a modern, rustic, or classic look, brushed copper fixtures offer a timeless appeal that can enhance any interior space.

Ursuline debating team enjoy an unforgettable experience

Eye onThurles

Last week was an unforgettable one for the Thurles Ursuline Secondary Schools Concern Debating team in Berlin. The week began with a breathtaking panoramic view from the glass dome of the German Bundestag, giving the team a unique perspective on the heart of German government. Next, the girls had the incredible opportunity to visit the Irish Embassy in Berlin. They were warmly welcomed by the Irish Ambassador, Dr. Nicholas O’Brien, who shared his insights on the importance of diplomacy and the future of Ireland’s international relations. The team impressed him with their knowledge and passion for global issues, which he highly commended.

The event continued with an educational tour of the Welt Hunger Hilfe organisation which operates joint development ventures with Concern. Here, the team met Marlina, who explained the process involved in publishing the Global Hunger Index on a yearly basis. This index is a crucial reliable resource for debaters, and the girls found it fascinating to learn the story behind it.

A day filled with learning, inspiration, and memorable experiences for the Ursuline girls who will remember it for a long time to come.

Celtic Brothers to help raise the Cathedral roof again with return concert

The brothers have crafted a very casual banter and delivery during their live shows

Following a brilliant concert in the Cathedral of the Assumption a few short years ago, the very popular Celtic Brothers are making a return trip and are set to light up the aisles with their unique take on many contemporary classics.

It was indeed a memorable evening when Robbie, Des, Johnny and Richie Willoughby performed with their band, chiding and cajoling each other as the sibling jibes went back and forth much to the delight and amusement of the audience. And, enthusiasts can look forward to more of the same on Friday, September 27th, with all proceeds from the event going towards the Cathedral Reroofing Project. Celtic Brothers’ passion for singing and performing, combined with a genuine closeness, stems from a childhood filled with music and singing, a love they carried with them throughout their formative years into adulthood, a gift given

to them by musical parents who also had a touring band.

Having recorded four albums as the six-piece Willoughby Brothers, the now refined fourpiece Celtic Brothers comprises of Robbie, Des, Johnny and Richie whose unique and recognisable sound which includes a repertoire featuring a blend of Irish ballads, popular classics and contemporary songs that take their audience on an emotive musical journey.

Performing in Ireland, the UK and the U.S.A, entertaining and endearing audiences for the past number of years Celtic Brothers are delighted to bring their newly evolved show to their loyal and

valued followers, of which there are very many. The brothers have crafted a very casual banter and delivery during their live shows which are complemented with laughter especially when the oldest brother in the pack, Richie, recalls anecdotal stories of them growing up as children. They also pay respect to their late mother

Breda who died aged 38 when the brothers were children leaving the brothers having to rely solely on their father which made them grow even closer.

Richie was the first to follow the stage spotlight, joining his parents’ band playing the drums at the tender age of 13, while Des went on to to study singing with the renowned vocal coach Dr Veronica Dunne, before joining and touring extensively with the Three Irish Tenors. Not only have the brothers a love of singing in common, but they also share a passion for sport, Gaelic football and handball in particular and impressively hold All Ireland handball medals. Adding to the family’s sporting success, Richie,

Johnny and Robbie are also World Handball Champions.

Their new album ‘Homeland’ topped the Official iTunes Charts, and has featured prominently on Ireland’s National Radio station RTE 1’s playlist.

The Cathedral of the Assumption Reroofing project has been running for some years now and is gathering pace all the time. This latest concert will help to bolster the fund to get the much needed works underway and follows on from other similar events featuring the likes of James Kilbane, Patrick Feeney and Phil Coulter. A total roof replacement has been on the cards for some time and visitors to the Cathedral can see the effects of the ailing roof in the decorative ceiling which is showing much proof of the problem.

If you wish to support the reroofing works, why not purchase a ticket for the Celtic Brothers this week. Tickets now on sale in Thurles Parish Centre, Bookworm and Holycross Abbey Shop. Book early to avoid disappointment.

Thurles mourns the passing of the late Antóin Ó Briain

Thurles town came to a standstill this week following the passing of the late, great Antóin Ó Briain who was laid to rest alongside his wife Alice and his son Michéal in St Patrick’s Cemetery on Sunday. A former teacher and Principal in Gairm Scoil Mhuire in Thurles, Tony, as he was known to most, was a magnificent teacher who maintained an interest in his pupils long after they had departed his classroom. This Limerick city native arrived in Thurles to teach in the old Vocational School in Castle Avenue – now the Municipal District Offices – and he never left, marrying his sweetheart Alice (Quinn), a primary school teacher who spent the majority of her career in nearby Scoil Ailbhe.

Antóin came to Thurles with a reputation – that of a very fine rugby player with Young Munster – and it wasn’t long before the local Thurles RFC sought out his talents, thus commencing a link with the club which continued right to the grave. Thurles RFC’s flag adorned his coffin and Tony bore the club tie as he lay in repose at home in Caragh, Brittas Road – a home which always had the key in the door and an open invitation to friend and stranger alike.

Of course, many will recognise Tony as one of the driving forces behind the local cumann of the Fianna Fáil party. He was a member of Thurles Urban District Council for many years, serving as Chairman on a number of occasions, and he never allowed politics to get in the way of making the right decision and for the right reasons. He acted as Director of Elections too on a number of occasions and represented the party on many local and national

representative bodies, where his no-nonsense, common sense and down-to-earth approach was very welcome and much appreciated. He was certainly a great advocate for Thurles and represented the town with great distinction on many national and international platforms.

Tony was also a man who would say what he felt and his direct approach won him many admirers, even if the message he was delivering might not have been the one the recipient necessarily wanted to hear. His integrity, decency and honesty were greatly appreciated and if Tony did not have the answer to a query or a question from a constituent, he would go to the ends of the world to find one. He really was the epitome of local representation. If rugby was one of Antóin’s great passions, another was musical theatre. And, having started at a young age following overtures from the late Jack O’Mahony, this construction teachers’ talents were put to good use in set building and stage managing with Thurles Musical Society. Tony was to give a lifetime of service to the Society, was accorded Honorary Life Membership – as was his wife Alice – and was, at the time of his passing, Honorary President of TMS, an honour which was also Alice’s prior to her passing five years ago. Tony was Honorary Treasurer for many years and was one of the public faces of the Society as he met and greeted patrons coming into the Premier Hall for all the shows. He also featured on stage for one year only, as he donned the vestments as the Priest and famously married Maria (Maria McElgunn) and Captain Georg von Trapp

(John Scott) in the Sound of Music in 1991 – he really looked the part as the kindly Parish Priest. Above all else, Antóin was a man who gave of himself tirelessly. He possessed an energy and drive which was second to none and he devoted much time to parish matters, acting as Minister of the Word, working on various parish bodies, boards of management, committees and groups. He spearheaded the Cathedral Restoration project which saw the total transformation of the Cathedral of the Assumption in Thurles – it was an enormous task and the work continued with the redevelopment of the Cathedral presbytery, the building of the Parish Office, the restoration and refurbishment of St Joseph and St Brigids Church, Bóthar na Naomh and the adjoining curates house, and the building of the Lámh Chúnta centre. At the time of his passing Tony was the Chairman of the Thurles Cathedral Raise the Roof project which has seen many fundraising projects including a new lotto running to generate a fund so that the ailing roof can be replaced.

Tony was a man of great devotion – a daily Mass goer when his health allowed. His, and Alice’s, faith could well have been tested following the tragic death of their son Micheál overseas four decades ago. But Tony showed incredible courage and resolve and displayed a strength of character which was truly admirable as he held his family together and helped them work through a very difficult time in their lives. He always maintained that but for his faith his God, this task would have been much more difficult, if

Great regret as Fr Joe to depart Thurles

There is great disappointment and regret in Thurles this week at the news that Rev Fr Joe Walsh will depart for pastures new in September following diocesan changes announced by Archbishop Kieran O’Reilly. The very popular Fr Joe, who is soon to complete his second stint of ministry in the Cathedral Town is heading for west Tipperary and the parish of Annacarty and Donohill and he will also offer pastoral assistance to Ven. Archdeacon Eugene Everard, Moderator of the Parish Pastoral Combination of Tipperary Town; Bansha and Kilmoyler; Solohead and Oola; Anacarty and Donohill.

Fr Joe has given supreme service to the parish of Thurles and its people and despite having endured a few very difficult years with the illness and subsequent passing of both his mother and father, he continued to work tirelessly and gave everything of himself in the process.

A native of the parish of Killenaule and Moyglass, Fr Joe enjoyed the respect of everybody in Thurles and much further afield. But, he had a very special rapport with the youth and worked as chaplain to Mary Immaculate St Patrick’s College Campus for a number of years –he had studied for the priesthood in that same college in its

not totally impossible.

Of course, Antóin was also totally devoted to Alice and together they put many thousands of Thurles boys and girls through their hands. They shared a great interest in their past pupils, but it was their own Jim, Micheál and Edel who really were the centre of their world. Jim moved to the US to make his way in life – a very regular visitor home to Brittas Road, thankfully he was in Thurles to spend time with Tony before he fell suddenly ill a week before his passing.

Edel followed her father into education, teaching in Belvedere College in Dublin and shares his love of gaeilge – Tony was chairman of the Board of Management of Gaeilscoil Bhríde at the time of his passing.

Tony and Alice were very proud of their children’s achievements, and when the grandchildren arrived, they doted on them with great affection and joy.

Tony endured a difficult few months recently as two of his sisters Mary and Margaret passed away in quick succession. Then his great friend and fellow teacher Muiris Ó Cléirigh also died suddenly leaving Tony in deep sadness. Tony was also predeceased by his brothers Pat and Seamus and he will be sadly missed by his children Jim and Edel, his daughterin-law Carol and son-in-law Ger, his sister-in-law Mary (Guilfoyle), his brother-in-law Joe, his adored grandchildren Michele, Andrew, Kevin, Sarah, Oisín, Conall and Aoileann, his nieces and nephews, his relatives, neighbours and a wide circle of dear friends.

Perhaps a simple measure of the man was the number of Guards

of Honour which accompanied him on his final journeys through the town he came to know as home – Thurles. Thurles Rugby Club, Gaeilscoil Bhride, Thurles Musical Society, Fianna Fáil, colleagues in education – they all stood shoulder to shoulder in deep respect for a man they respected deeply.

The Thurles Cathedral Choir and members of Thurles Musical Society raised the roof of the Cathedral in honour of their friend during Requiem Mass as Chief Celebrant, Rev Fr James Purcell – a personal friend of Antóin’s – spoke with great affection and regard for a man who was friend to many – his singing of Antoin’s party piece ‘O Lord it’s so hard to be humble’ brought many smiles to the congregation in his generous, warm and heartfelt homily.

Antóin, the construction and woodwork teacher, had been building a home for himself

in Heaven for many decades through his many great deeds and works for others. He was generous to a fault with his time and would say: “The man who made time, made plenty of it.” For somebody who was not a native, he understood perfectly the town and its people, and his gentle influence helped to shape the community which exists in Thurles to this day. What greater legacy could he possibly leave behind.

Brittas Road seems empty this week; Bookworm in Thurles has an empty chair at the coffee table; the Premier Hall front of house is all the poorer; Tony has replaced the House of God in the Cathedral for a new Heavenly Home where the reunion with his beloved Alice, Micheál and his extended family has surely been a joyous one.

Antóin Ó Briain – rest easy. Ni bheidh do leithéid an arís.

previous existence before being ordained.

While Thurles deeply regrets Fr Joe’s departure, there is also acknowledgement amongst the faithful that the labourers are fewer and fewer, while the harvest remains vast. And, Thurles’ loss will be Annacarty and Donohill’s gain and this very sincere and popular man will bring vibrancy and energy to the parish. Fr Joe still has a number of weeks to go before his departure but already preparations are underway for his move.

Fr Joe is pictured (right) with Rev Fr Vincent Stapleton CC and Rev Fr James Purcell PP, Thurles parish.

Bansha Show has been an integral part of the community since its foundation in 1956. It has

developed over the years into an important local event encompassing all sections of community life, and keeping in the ethos and spirit of Muintir na Tíre and its founder the late Canon John Hayes. The idea for the Show was the brainchild of Canon Hayes, who along with being Founder and President of Muintir na Tíre, was also Parish Priest of Bansha & Kilmoyler. Unfortunately Canon Hayes only lived to see the very first show as he passed away on January 30th, 1957. However his memory is very much alive in the annual show which is affiliated to Muintir na Tíre. Entries for the show can be submitted to banshashow922@gmail.com and all entries close at 12:00 Noon on Wednesday 16th August 2024.

facilities, along with being widely available on social media and in the reception areas of public buildings in the town. Tipperary Town Revitalisation and Tipperary County Council have commissioned Raymond Burke Consulting to develop a new vision and business plan for the facilities, and the current survey is the first step in a broader effort to ensure that the town is served with stateof-the-art sporting and recreation infrastructure into the future.

John McCahill, Chairperson of Canon Hayes Recreation Centre said that the Board of Directors of CHRC are delighted to get this process underway. “Our Board

has been working hard to make improvements to our Centre in recent years and has made some progress. It is clear however that the Centre will need significant investment in the near future, along with the Swimming Pool. We are asking the public to give their views at this early stage on what the priorities should be. This will really help us as we put the plan together with the Task Force and the Council” said Mr. McCahill. Along with the public survey there will be direct engagement with the various clubs and associations that use the CHRC and Swimming Pool, and this will be used as the basis

for a new business plan aimed at leveraging the funding required to upgrade the facilities in the coming years. The survey can be found in the reception areas of both facilities and on their social media pages, and can be completed up to 22/08/2024. Tipperary Town Olympian returns to a heroes reception

Speaking at the reception Amee-Leigh thanked Breeda Christie for her coaching

Olympian Amee-Leigh Murphy Crowe returned home to a heroes reception in Tipperary town on Saturday August 3rd.

Murphy Crowe who began playing rugby aged 15 at her local club, Clanwilliam RFC, came back to her home grounds to be welcomed by club members and members of the local community in Tipperary town. A piper played her into the grounds where she was met by an array of flags, bunting and lots of colourful banners, to recognise her achievements on the world stage. Club officers were there to greet her along with her 94 year old athletics coach Breeda Christie, who was looking every bit as young as she was when she was coaching Amee-Leigh at 8 years of age over 20 years ago. Also present was the Club President Liam Downey, who presented her with a bouquet of flowers, and her former club coach, Padraig Culbert, who outlined some of the international achievements of Amee-Leigh, the flying Irish winger who scored three tries in

Ireland’s opening two games at the Olympics. Speaking at the reception Amee-Leigh thanked Breeda Christie for her coaching expertise and described her as “Tipp town’s national treasure”.

“I can’t thank you enough for helping me make my way to rugby and to Paris 2024” said AmeeLeigh. Pat Ryan who was compere for the reception asked AmeeLeigh a few questions about her career and he began by asking her what brought her into rugby.

“I was doing an individual sport for quite a long time and coming into secondary school I wanted to get involved in team sports. I enjoyed being part of a team as they can become your best friends and your family. When I met my boyfriend Niall, I saw that his family were big rugby fanatics and they influenced me a lot including taking me to games at Thomond Park and I became a massive Munster fan. Clanwilliam offers a welcoming and warm community and they were really good people to be around. I really enjoyed spending time at Clanwilliam and

I had great fun at training, even in the rain! I would never change the journey that I have been on for anything” said Amee-Leigh. Speaking about her journey, Amee-Leigh went on to say that it was quite an honour to have had a journey like that. “To be able to have a journey like that, to be able to play underage and then to play for your province is such an honour, and the destination of playing at the Olympics. The main part of that journey is how I actually got there in taking all those steps and working hard for Ireland. One thing my parents have taught me is make sure and enjoy your life as some people don’t get life for that long”. AmeeLeigh went on to speak about her career highlights. “For me in January when we won in Perth (first World Series win), there is no other feeling than being the best in the world and that has been the highlight of my career to date. To be able to say at that moment that you were the best team in the series, was just something so special. To be able to do it against Australia, where they were at home with a home crowd, was just a wonderful moment. Our captain Lucy Mulhall is an inspiration. She epitomises what a good person is and she has taught me how to be a good person. If you are a good person first you will become a

good rugby player, and she has taught that to us all. She is a real class athlete and she has a never say die attitude” said Amee-Leigh. Before she went off to meet the supporters and to sign autographs Amee-Leigh extended thanks to her family, her boyfriend, her team mates and to the community of Tipperary town and district, who had shown such support to her during her preparations and during the games. In conclusion she had some words of advice for younger people. “I never though as a child that I would end up on a rugby pitch. I thought I would go to the Olympics to be an athlete and I didn’t, and that dream sank for a few years until I found the Rugby Sevens Programme. Never give up on your dreams. I had always dreamed of being an Olympian and to do it is extra special. It is really hard if you have a dream and you want to achieve something that high. It is not going to be handed to you and I never expected anything in my life to be handed to me, but if you have a massive dream you just have to dig into it and don’t stop believing in it, even if it is a rainy Tuesday night or a Sunday when you want to stay. Just think about the end goal and if you can achieve that goal then you will make my heart content in knowing that you gave it the very best shot” concluded Amee-Leigh.

the week in sport

Unraced Stake wide open with Glorious Syd topping the semifinals

Both Semi-Finals of The Fr. Jerry Condon Unraced Stake were the feature of Friday nights racing at Clonmel. Michael Spillane’s Gaytime Lomo the eye catcher last week absent, having been sold, made the opening semi-final very open. Tight between three from traps it was Haydeezrebel in one that led around the opening turn slightly clear of Dakota Drive and Glorious Syd. Just half a length separating the three into the third corner and in a driving thrilling finish Ian Bourke and Timmy Ryan’s Glorious Syd snatched it by a short head in 28.88. The Adam Dunford trained Fastnet Supreme winner last week was the second semi-final favourite and led from traps, but Good Rocky shadowed him down the far side. Stride for stride running the final bends Bang Out Cashout challenged with pace but sticking to his task The A-C-C- Syndicate owned Fastnet Supreme held on to win by a short head over the late challenger in 29.40. Next Friday night’s final of this unraced stake should be quite interesting. Trap draw will have a big say but the six finalists are dogs with bright futures. Kicking off racing on Friday night Elizabeth Sives’s Swift Lilith a debutant showed good railing at the opening turn to lead all from the opening turn to win comfortable in 29.54. Eleanor O Neill’s Noguts Noglory lived up to his

name with a very determined run in the second despite a very strong challenge to win in 29.44. Golden trainer Graham Holland had a real battle with David Hickey’s Out Yonder in the A2 525. The Holland trained Da Guvnor owned by Graham Ashe joining the longtime leader at the final; two bends came very hard on the run in to snatch it by a neck in 28.69. A dog that grabbed the attention of everyone back in early July was Down To Business trained by Bernadette Connolly for Darragh Kelly and Sharon Mulcahy when winning at Clonmel in 28.51. Since was down the field nursing a niggling injury but came back last Friday night to produce the fastest time of the night run in the final race when dominating from the second bend to win in 28.49. Expect this lad to feature in bigger events before the year is over. Sunday night at Clonmel Track was a night of celebration with the very popular man Jim Lynch celebration a momentous birthday with family and friends. Jim very well respected at Clonmel track running his dogs under the prefix “Kilcash” and also secretary at Crohane & Killenaule Coursing Club always has a smile and soft approach in all his dealings with people. His surprise birthday very well supported ran well into the night and with some very exciting races to add to the occasion a great night was had by all.

David O Neill from Cahir saw his runner Chamberlain Pat produce his best run to date with a powerful finish to win in 28.78. Billy Murphy and Frances Mullan’s Ascot Ogan made it four on the trot with a trap to line run in 29.06. Fethard man Graham Howson saw Rathcoole Peg make it back to back wins in the final race of the night while another Fethard man

and trainer David Flanagan saw Saheel Charm owned by Matthew Derrick land the fourth race of the night. Cahir man Seamus Quirke was all smiles when Shanahee Ava landed her career first win in the fifth as she sneaked up along the rails on the run in. The roof lifted with Codswallop landing his career first win from the cheers from The Manknown-

othingaboutdog Syndicate. The lightly races youngster showed very good determination from the second bend to dominate to the line in 29.45. Paul Davies made it a hat trick of wins for Fethard when Eskvale Bobo landed The A5 in 29.67 while veteran trainer Christy Browne saw Tuco Reef deservingly land the eight race in a thrilling finish in 29.77. The

run of the night came in the tenth race when Clonmel owner Mary O Connor saw Minor Rocker make it a trap to line performance to produce the fastest time of the night in 28.71. Not really unexpected from this lady as she showed genuine potential early in her career but is one who relishes the inside traps which she showed when winning in the blue sheet.

Ian Bourke, Timmy and Robbie Ryan with Glorious Syd, semi-final winner of The Unraces Stake
Back to Clonmel from Dublin for the Bank Holiday were Billy, Sean, Zach and Max Peters with Alisha Darcy at Clonmel Track The A-C-C Syndicate with Fastnett Supreme, semi-final of Unraced Stake winner
