We met on September 24, 2012 at the Newark Valley Railroad Depot for our thank you dinner. There were 27 members in attendance for the lasagna and salad with apple crumble ala mode for dessert. A big thank you to the Newark Valley Historical Society ladies for their well prepared and filling meal!

We also entered into an animated discussion about how to promote more interest in younger car enthusiasts, This is a subject that we will be working on much more in the year to come. One suggestion that needs to be looked into more deeply is a set aside portion of the show for more modern cars. The October meeting will be held on October 15,2012 at 7:00PM. The weather is colder and so we have to return to the Tioga County Office building in the CONFERENCE ROOM. SEE YOU THERE!!!

President’s Ponderings

“To catch the reader's attention, place an interesting sentence or quote from the story here.”

There has been so much activity this summer that I sometimes wonder if I haven’t some how been tricked Into another full time job. I have become more convinced that it would benefit not only Tioga Region but also the car hobby itself if we become more involved with other regions of AACA. Thus I attended the car shows of both Iroquois and Onoquaga Regions and one tour sponsored by Iroquois Region. Guess what? I have made more friends in the area who know and love cars as I do! One thing that I have learned from these outings is that the other clubs have the same problem as we do, there just aren’t enough bodies to make the jobs that need to be done easy. Also the members of those other clubs are suffering from our same malady, we are all getting older! The latter malady makes it more difficult to work for the needed suc-

cess of our shows. (And you thought I hadn’t heard the voices in our meetings!)

In fact, think of the weight that would come off our shoulders if we were to double the new recruits to eight!

New England Concours d’Elegance September 29th dawned dreary and wet, what a downer for the beginning of a tour to a top rated car show. The eight of us met at 8:00AM at the Cracker Barrel in Binghamton, N.Y. Cheryl and I were joined by Carol and Bob Seidel, George Simon, Emily and Howard Seymour, and Charlie Kuhlman for breakfast before traveling to Saratoga Springs. I am not sure which one of us came up with the name “The Presidents Tour” as the three A.A.C.A. clubs from the Triple Cities were present. Carol Seidel is the president of Onoquaga, George Simon is president of Iroquois, and, of course, I have the honor with Tioga. The other members of our group each hold offices in Tioga Region as well, but the main point is that we all have become friends due to our involvement in collector cars. Breakfast finished we all

mounted our modern cars to begin the trip. We had agreed in advance that we were going as spectators and not as exhibitors. Route 88 was somewhat open due to the rain and since I was in the lead it was easy for me to set the cruise control at just under 65. With the exception of one female deer that threatened to cross in front of me there was little to do but steer and admire the colors of fall along the road. True the rain and overcast kept most of the brightness out of the picture but it was still beautiful.

and I all felt that we could not go wrong with the Ford Racer that you see in the picture at the right. The car was tagged at $225.00 but we were given the price of $175.00. This is the fourth car we bought from Reggie, and he has always given us a break on the prices. Like our last car for the raffle this car has up graded wheels that were meant for riding on grass as well as pavement. The seat is also padded which makes this a step above most of the offerings now on the market.

We intended to eat lunch in Ballston Spa on the way to On the way east on 88 we the show but I made the dropped of at Dwaynesburg mistake of forgetting that to visit Needful Things, a there was only one ramp at favorite antique shop the exit we needed. Concours Continued Saturday’s show turned out to be a mixed bag cruise in with cars from as early as the thirties through a modern Mustang. There were several cars that had been highly modified as well. The only vendors were those selling food. By the time that our group arrived the entrance fee had been dropped so we were able to enter without the $10.00 admission. Since there were less than a hundred cars on the field it took us a short time to see the show so we continued into the Saratoga Car Museum to see the display of NASCAR cars.

Sunday morning dawned not only chilly but also very damp. Breakfast was a confused get-together where some ate at the motel and Cheryl and I forced the group to watch us eat at the local Friendly's. The Concours was a duel field affair where the front field contained more cruise in type cars and the rear field contained the invited cars.

Although the show book listed a total of 124 cars, I think the total on the field was more like only 100. Yes there were some impressive cars represented like the 1904 Oldsmobile and We were a bit late getting the outstanding 1937 Grato the motel in Glens Falls ham. The rain came during the presentation of awards, but the show had already been made less pleasant by the starting and movement of a poorly tuned Cobra that had not seen it’s exhaust system in the last several years! That Cobra sounded like it was ready to swallow more than one valve and perhaps a piston or two thrown in. The awards were also rather humerous as there were awards for; Most Opulent Interior, Best Designed Grill, Most Stylish Headlamps, Most Intriguing Rear View, First Choice to Buy If You Won the Lottery, Best Car To Drive to California, and Most Striking Color Combination. In all there were 24 trophies given out but there were only four that were identified with a car make! George stopped on the way home to pick up the Peddle car.

This year lets all make an effort to recruit at least one new member.

The Peddle Car Winner Lucas Carr from Walton New York Asked Grandfather Les to buy him the peddle car when he saw it at the car show. That prompted Les to buy a ticket. By the time they had made it home, I had called to inform them they had won. Lucas now races his older brother who owns a 1955 Chevy peddle car around their home. Sure looks as if Lucas is proud of his new car and I bet there are times when big brother comes in second to the delighted young man in his “Model A” I wonder if there is a younger sibling who would like to drive our next year’s offering?
