There has been some concern that our monthly meetings have not been properly announced in the newsletter, as a result it has been suggested that the lead story of each newsletter be the date and time for the meeting. The February

meeting will be our usual Breakfast meeting at the Blue Dolphin in Apalachin. The date for this meeting is February 23, 2013 at 8:30 AM. We will have the separate dining room as we normally do so that we can conduct our meeting

without affecting the other patrons of the restaurant. As usual the breakfast is your choice of the normal menu at your expense. Please call Cheryl or I at 785-8867 to give us a count for the restaurant. Hope to see all of you there!!!

Another Memory Quiz In the early days of the automobile there was a seat that was referred to as the “Motherin-Law “ seat, What was this

seat and what vehicle style would have had this feature installed? Hint another name for this feature was the half rumble.

Answer found on last page of the newsletter. NO PEAKING!!!

New York S.B. 1899 This information comes from the Sema Action Network; Legislation has been reintroduced in the New York Senate (S.B. 1899) to provide that historical vehicle owners only pay a one time registration fee of $100.00 upon initial registration. The bill has been referred to the New York Transportation Committee for consideration. The bill was approved by the full Senate last session, but died in the Assembly when the legislature adjourned for the year.

The reduced registration fee would be available to owners of historical vehicles owned and operated as an exhibition piece or collector’s item and used for club activities, exhibits, tours, parades, occasional transportation and similar uses. Under current New York law, a historical motor vehicle is either a vehicle manufactured more than 25 years ago or one which has unique characteristics and which is determined to be of historical, classic or exhibi-

tion value. The $100.00 one time fee would replace the currant annual fee of $28.75 If you can contact your Senator or Assemblyman ask him or her to support this bill as this one time fee makes sense for us as well as the collector car hobby. Our cars are not used as daily drivers, and they do not add to the congestion of every day driving, why should we have to reregister these cars every year?

Oops This newsletter almost didn’t happen. After creating five pages of this letter my computer suddenly decided that it would take a vacation. In a

panic I rushed to Staples with my tower under my arm and dread in my heart. The long weekend passed while I tried not to worry more.

One hundred dollars later I was reinstalling all the wires and testing the errant equipment. The good news is that it WORKS!!!!

Why Pay For Our Yearly Registrations? We drive our cars only part of the year!

Emerging Trends In the past two to three years there seems to be a new awareness of the need for auto enthusiasts to recognize the likes and interests of each other. More and more clubs other than those affiliated with AACA are making their outings and events open to non-member car owners. I have received information for car shows, cruise-ins, and dinners put on by clubs other than our own with open invitations to our club members. Some of the reason for these invitations of course is to entice our members to become members of the other clubs, but they also are interested in forming a more cohesive front for the overall car enthusiasts hobby.

time went on there has emerged more interest in the restoration movement. It is with the above thinking that I am beginning to include information from other clubs in our newsletter. The separation of our fully restored or carefully preserved automobile from the modified or even cannibalized automobiles only tend to make the interest in our format less as the public are thrilled by the loud noise and garish colors of those cars we do not attract.

Some of the advantages to a more united front can be found in the influence we the car enthusiast can have in local lawmaking from a larger representation.

By recognizing the other clubs in our area we bring more interest in making the car hobby an even more exciting attraction than it has been in the past. I may not be thrilled to see a modified1950 Studebaker with a Chevy 350 installed, but there are advantages to having such a car included in but not necessarily beside a fully restored 1950 in a car show.

Sema has proven the advantage that a larger organization has in helping move government thinking in the favor of our interests. True Sema first seemed to be more interested in the hot rod and custom market, but as

Unfortunately even the Tuners are authentic interest cars to some of the public. We can’t afford to ignore the trends of the day. We gain strength by inclusion rather than seclusion!

Although this picture doesn’t show it well there is a third seat behind the two bucket seats on this roadster. This third seat would be centered in the body and a bit difficult to enter. Since most roadsters were considered a bachelor's vehicle, the inference was that the young man’s date would have her mother as a chaperone during the time of their trip. The half rumble soon developed into the full rumble seat as car bodies became more complex. Some of you will recognize the car in the picture as the Ford Model K that belongs to the AACA Car Museum that was displayed at our 2010 car show. This car and most others of this era were of course used only in the heat of summer and most of the occupants would have been bundled in “Dusters” to ward off the dust that would be kicked up from the dirt roads where the car would have operated. Gone are the days of true automobiling adventure!
