GOOSE BLIND DEADLINES FOR CONTROLLED HUNTING AREAS Application deadlines are fast approaching for waterfowl hunters interested in being selected for the limited number of goose blinds at the controlled hunting areas at the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s Pymatuning or Middle Creek wildlife management areas during the regular Canada goose season. A goose blind application must be submitted using the form found on page 28 of the 2013-14 Pennsylvania Hunting & Trapping Digest. Hunters may apply to only one area per year and may submit only one application, which must include the individual’s ninedigit Customer Identification (CID) Number. The Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area will accept applications through the mail until Sept. 10, at: PGC Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area, P.O. Box 110, Kleinfeltersville, PA 17039-0110. A public drawing will be held at 10 a.m., Sept. 11. Applications for the Pymatuning Wildlife Management Area will be accepted through the mail until Sept. 14, at: PGC Pymatuning Wildlife Management Area, 9552 Hartstown Road, Hartstown, PA 16131. A public drawing will be held at 10 a.m., Sept. 21. Blinds at Middle Creek and Pymatuning will not be operational during the September season. During the regular season, shooting days at Middle Creek are Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, one-half hour before sunrise to 1:30 p.m. Shooting days at Pymatuning are Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, one-half hour before sunrise to 12:30 p.m. A separate drawing is held for blinds that accommodate hunters with disabilities. Applicants must submit a current copy of their Disabled Person Permit (to hunt from a vehicle) issued by the Game Commission. Also, the Game Commission again will hold special junior-only waterfowl hunting days at the controlled goose hunting areas at both Middle Creek (Nov. 16) and Pymatuning (Nov. 30) wildlife management areas. The junior-only restriction applies to the controlled goose hunting areas only; public hunting areas at Middle Creek and Pymatuning, and the Controlled Duck Hunting Areas at Pymatuning, remain open to everyone, including adults, on these dates. Juniors must hold a junior license and be accompanied by an adult, who may participate in the hunt by calling only. A special drawing of applications submitted by junior license holders will be held immediately before the regular drawing for goose blinds. Interested juniors should use the same application on page 28 of the 2013-14 Pennsylvania Hunting & Trapping Digest. Only one application will be accepted per junior hunter. Junior license holders not selected in the special drawing will then be entered into the general drawing. Successful applicants will be mailed a hunting reservation entitling them to be accompanied by up to three guests. On hunting days, hunters also may apply, in person, for a chance at any blinds unclaimed by a reservation holder. Persons who have previously hunted a controlled goose hunting area at the Game Commission’s Pymatuning or Middle Creek wildlife management areas may apply for unclaimed blinds on the morning of the designated shooting day, but only when there exists an absence of applications for the unclaimed blinds from persons who have not previously hunted a controlled goose hunting area. SPECIAL WATERFOWL HUNTING SAFETY REMINDERS Waterfowl hunters - whether hunting from shore or from a boat - are urged to keep safety first and foremost in mind, said Keith Snyder, Pennsylvania Game Commission Hunter-Trapper Education Division chief. “Basic firearm and hunting safety are critical,” Snyder said. “Treat every firearm as if it is loaded and make sure that the muzzle is always pointed in a safe direction. Never place your finger on the trigger until you are ready to fire. Be aware of any companions’ locations at all times and maintain a safe zone-offire. Waterfowl action can be exciting, but never swing your barrel toward another hunter.” “Make sure firearms are unloaded prior to reaching your CARD CREEK hunting location and immediately after you are done TRADING POST hunting. Also, if you are using a Vermont Casting Stoves boat, remember state law requires all firearms be • Wood • Gas • Coal unloaded in any boat propelled by motor or sail, and should be cased with actions open.” 348 Card Creek Road Snyder also noted that, Roulette, PA in Pennsylvania, all those using 814-544-7313 a boat are required to have a properly fitted personal flotation device (PFD) readily accessible and, regulations require a PFD to be worn during the cold weather months from Nov. 1 through April 30 while underway or at anchor on boats shorter than 16 feet in length, or in any canoe or kayak. For more information on boating laws and regulations, as well as safety tips, please visit the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission’s website (www.fish.state.pa.us). Better yet, take an approved boater’s safety course. Additionally, according to the U.S. Coast Guard, every year several hunters die from drowning and hypothermia.

It places a severe strain on bodily systems that can lead to hypothermia or, worse, cardiac arrest. Survivors of cold-water accidents have reported their breath driven from them on contact with the water.” Anyone falling into cold water should immediately ensure that their and any companions’ PFDs are intact, and work to find a way to exit the water or right the watercraft. Cover your mouth and nose - if possible - to prevent inhaling water. If you can’t get out of the water immediately and the shore is too far, raise your knees and wrap your arms across your chest to

STABLE FLIES: TAKING A BIG BITE THIS YEAR Colleen Cavagna, Cornell Cooperative Extension Community Educator The stable fly is usually found right where you would expect to find it, around livestock areas. You might see animals in pasture stomping repeatedly, tail switching and skin quivering; they are trying to shake off the stable fly from their legs and belly areas. What happens when you live near a livestock area or their numbers get large enough that they are seen outside their normal range? You may find a few stable flies landing on your ankles taking a bite. Brushing them off doesn’t stop them from coming back as they are aggressive flies. The stable fly looks similar to a regular house fly but they have knife-like mouthparts that pierce the skin to allow them access to their blood meal. Both male and female stable flies feed on blood several times a day. Stable flies can be transported long distances on weather fronts. These flies are a nuisance to both humans and livestock alike. While we can escape into our homes, animals have a harder time; production performance declines in infested herds because of the flies’ painful biting activity and animal fatigue from trying to dislodge flies Control in both the human and livestock settings requires reducing available breeding grounds. In a home-ground setting you should rake up and compost moist lawn clippings to reduce populations. Compost piles must be turned periodically to keep the pile hot and decomposition active. In a livestock scenario you would clean up any: spilled animal feed, moist soil with round bale interface, spilled feed around feed bunks, poorly managed compost areas and water weeds washed to shorelines. New fly catching traps are being evaluated as a way to manage this pest. A new trap “that has shown to have promise” is constructed of clear alsynite (a fiberglass-like material) cylinder. Alsynite is attractive to these biting flies. When outfitted with a clear sticky surface, alsynite (biting fly) traps have been quite effective at capturing stable flies. At least two stable fly traps are available commercially. Two possible sources among others are Olson Products Biting Fly Trap (alsynite) and Farnam’s Equine Products (non-alsynite but attracts via another method). Alsynite traps are currently being used at the Cornell Dairy Farm with much success. Researchers have recently learned that hanging a black cotton cloth (2x2 ft. size) near the trap increases the amount of flies trapped by three-fold. Flies are attracted to the black cloth thinking it is the side of a cow! Alsynite traps are a great addition to your current fly control methods; they are inexpensive, easy to setup, and not a chemical control method. You can purchase these traps online. Don’t forget Rover! Stable flies are indiscriminant; they will also feed on our most loyal friend the dog. If you have an outdoor dog or are outside a lot with your pet, know that stable flies will feed on the edges of their ears. There are insect repellents containing permethrin or pyrethrins that are effective at keeping them at bay. (Read the label to be sure they are for your pet and follow the directions carefully). No one likes to be bit by anything, let alone an aggressive biting fly, but reducing breeding grounds and installing some great biting fly traps will make the summer restful again. Same Name • Same Location • Same Owners “The bottom line is Always less at Carpet Express!” DOING MORE WITH LESS By: M.L. Wells, Cornell Cooperative Extension Master Gardener The years roll on and the garden grows-in size. There comes a time when it is prudent to reverse the process. Shrinking the area is not so hard, but giving up plants is another story. It seems to me when you have less time or your body dictates “garden less,” there are two approaches in the vegetable garden. Do I really need zucchini? How can I almost have as much in less space?! The list of what “I don’t need to grow” will vary person to person. You know your likes and what you mostly give away. Last year I decided to reduce the 1200 sq. feet by 1/4, a more manageable 900 sq. feet: 45 x 20. The hardest part was deciding to do it. Then the challenge, the fun and games began. The main techniques which came into play were as follows: 1. Increase the depth of the soil, 2. Start cool season crops early indoors and transplant outside with protective covers so they can be harvested earlier; thus freeing up the space for a second fall crop, 3. Interplant, 4. Utilize trellises, stakes, and fences (vertical growing), 5. Rethink tilling or digging the garden, 6. Think mulch instead, 7. Don’t forget the gardens second season: late July October, 8. Water when necessary To cover all of these topics, I will break this into a three part article! Let’s start with soil depth; allow me to relate my time living in Kentucky, 3 miles from the Ohio River and in the flood plain. When our dog died, my husband dug a 3 foot hole for the burial. It was rich, black top soil all the way down those three feet! In comparison, here in Allegany County we look at our meager mix of a few inches left behind by the glaciers and we know how unfair life can be. My garden in Kentucky was amazing. Everything grew twice as high and full and produced four times as much! This was a good lesson for me once I moved to Allegany County. I wanted my 3 feet of beautiful soil, so I started adding compost, leaves and other humus to my garden to add inches and produce more. You can add compostable materials to your garden too; if you want to speed up the process, consider buying some quality soil. Even if you only have a little money to spend on your garden, spend it on good top soil. I once calculated a wellplanned 10’ x 10’ space would yield $500 in tasty, pesticide free food. Adding 6 inches to a 10’ x 10’ = 2 cu yards at a cost of about $100. Don’t buy the bagged “stuff”. Go to a local contractor you trust and get a load of the “real thing”. Less garden area with deeper soil means less money spent on seed, fertilizer, mulch and less time to care for it. But it will produce more per sq. foot. fb FAITH CHURCH OF CHARITY (Independent Assembly of God) Grimes District Road Port Allegany, PA Pastor: Rev. June E. PENNSYLVANIA WATERFOWL SEASONS ANNOUNCED Annual brochure available at Game Commission’s website. The Pennsylvania Game Commission has made its selections for the 2013-14 migratory game bird hunting seasons and bag limits. Annual waterfowl seasons are selected by states from a framework established by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Game Commission selections were made after reviewing last year’s season results, waterfowl survey data, and input gathered from waterfowl hunters and the public. Final approval from the USFWS is expected by late September. The agency has posted the annual waterfowl and migratory bird season brochure and zone maps on its website (www.pgc.state.pa.us), making it convenient for hunters to access the information they need. Game Commission waterfowl biologist Kevin Jacobs said the outlook is mixed for waterfowl populations important to Pennsylvania. “Banding studies indicate most of Pennsylvania’s mallard, wood duck, and Canada goose harvests are derived from birds breeding in Pennsylvania and surrounding states,” Jacobs said. “These populations are monitored through the Atlantic Flyway

Breeding Waterfowl Survey. At the state level, the estimated number of indicated mallard breeding pairs (69,400) was 24 percent below the 1993-2012 long-term average of 91,000 pairs. Other surveys also indicate that mallard populations in the northeastern U.S. have declined from levels observed in the 1990s. The 59,600 wood duck breeding pairs estimated in Pennsylvania in 2013 is similar to the long-term statewide average of 52,000 pairs.” “Trends in wood duck abundance have indicated stable to slightly increasing populations across all years of the survey for both Pennsylvania and the northeastern U.S.,” Jacobs said. “The 2013 statewide estimate for American black ducks is 2,137 pairs. Black ducks have been observed at very low and declining densities since the survey was initiated in 1989. However, black duck populations in eastern Canada remain healthy and support open hunting seasons on this historically important species in eastern North America. American black ducks continue to account for about 5 percent of Pennsylvania’s total duck harvest.” The Pennsylvania estimates of total blue-winged teal (11,100) and total green-winged teal (6,300) are above average in 2013. “We don’t believe these estimates are indicative of true breeding populations of teal in Pennsylvania as many migrating teal are encountered during the survey period,” Jacobs said. “Estimates of total hooded mergansers (10,700) and common mergansers (28,000) are above average. The trends for both breeding merganser species have increased since 1993.” Jacobs noted that Pennsylvania’s spring 2013 resident Canada goose population is estimated at 279,000 birds. “The resident goose population appears to have declined over the past nine years following highly significant population expansion from 1990 to 2004, but it remains well above the Resident Population management plan goal of 150,000 spring birds,” Jacobs said. “We continue efforts to achieve the management plan goal primarily by reducing populations in southeastern and southwestern Pennsylvania.” Jacobs noted that spring population estimates and fall flight forecasts are obtained at large geographic scales. In the Atlantic Population Goose Zone, the regular light goose season will be Oct. 1 to Jan. 25, with a light goose conservation season to run from Jan. 27 to April 25. In the Southern James Bay Population Goose Zone, the regular light goose season will be Oct. 1 to Jan. 24, with a light goose conservation season to run from Jan. 25 to April 25. The Resident Population Goose Zone regular light goose season will run Oct. 28 to Feb. 28, and the light goose conservation season will run March 1 to April 25. Young Pennsylvania hunters will have two special days of waterfowl hunting, on Saturday, Sept. 14, and Saturday, Sept. 21. The Junior Waterfowl Days will be open to those 12 to 15 years old who hold a junior hunting license. To participate, a youngster must be accompanied by an adult, who may assist the juniors in calling, duck identification and other aspects of the hunt. On the junior waterfowl hunting day, Sept. 21, hunting hours for all waterfowl species closes at sunset. For more info., www.pgc.state.pa.us f

EASY HAIRBRUSH CLEANER The best thing that I have found for cleaning dirty hairbrushes is shampoo. I just put a small amount in a small pail of water, and then I put my brushes in the pail to soak. After an hour or two, I simply rinse them. The shampoo removes all of the buildup from hairspray or other styling products, and it also loosens any hair that I couldn’t get out before soaking. Let the brushes dry before using them again. They will be cleaner than ever before! -P. THE MEANING OF “LITE” As I was eating breakfast the other morning, I looked at the packaging for the “lite” cranberry juice I was drinking. It said “contains 50% juice,” so I looked at the ingredient list. The first item was filtered water! So, I’m going to start buying the regular, full-strength juice and save my money by cutting it in half with water. -DW in Florida

6 W. 2nd St., Coudersport, PA • 814-274-8044 WHY MARRIAGE CAN BE GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH Proponents of marriage may quote any number of reasons why couples should tie the knot instead of living a life of singlehood. A desire to raise children together is one reason many couples

wed, but getting hitched might also be better for your health. That’s right, a growing body of evidence has suggested marriage may be beneficial for men and women from a health and wellness standpoint. A 2006 study published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community found that, compared with married

people, people who are widowed, are divorced/ separated or have never married are more likely to die earlier. In addition to a greater combined wealth that may make access to health insurance or better healthcare possible, there are a number of possible reasons behind why married couples tend to be healthier and happier. * Safety: Being married and committed to one partner reduces your risk of developing a disease through intimate encounters. Furthermore, married couples tend to be less involved in behaviors that may put them at risk for violent altercations between others. Research by the United States Justice Department has found that single and divorced women are four to five times more likely to be victims of violence in any given year than

women who are married, while bachelors are four times more likely to be victims of violent-crime than men who are married. * Health monitoring: Married couples may pay attention to and monitor changes in each other’s health more so than boyfriends and girlfriends. Couples who can recognize the subtle changes in physical or emotional health may be able to identify problems before they become more serious. Couples may also be able to urge spouses to make appointments for routine health screenings and follow up on doctors’ appointments. * Greater financial security: Money is a primary source of stress for many men and women. But living in a dualincome household can ease some of that stress and the potential health problems that come with it. Some research has indicated that married men make as much as 40 percent more money than comparable single men, even after accounting for education and job history. Marriage could be seen as an indication of security and trustworthiness, traits appealing to a company. * Increased intimacy: According to information compiled by Richard Niolon Ph.D., nearly half of all married people engage in intimate relations twice a week, compared to 20 to 24 percent of single and cohabitating men and women. Sex releases endorphins that improve mood, can be classified as moderate exercise, creates a feel-good environment

that can reduce stress and promotes further contact between couples. * Improves mental health: Many people joke that getting married removes freedoms that lead to happiness, but researchers find that this isn’t the case. In their book, “The Case for Marriage: Why Married People Are Happier, Healthier, and Better off Financially,” authors Linda Waite and Maggie Gallagher found married men are only half as likely as bachelors and one-third as likely as divorced guys to take their own lives. Wives are also much less likely to commit suicide than single, divorced or widowed women. Married people are much less likely to have problems with alcohol abuse or illegal drugs. An international study of 17

developed nations from Steven Stack and J. Ross Eshleman found that “married persons have a significantly higher level of happiness than persons who are not married,” even after controlling for gender, age, education, children, church attendance, financial satisfaction, and self-reported health.

There are many healthrelated benefits to getting married. Men and women about to enter into a new life together can add good health to the reason why they are happy about their upcoming nuptials.

MAKING USE OF WEDDING LEFTOVERS In an effort to create a once-in-a-lifetime event that is remembered by all in attendance, many couples will admit to going a tad overboard with their weddings. From ultra-stretch limousines to bachelor/bachelorette parties in Las Vegas to course after course of food and beverages, some weddings are a lesson in excess. When the party has winded down, conscious couples can ensure that some of the excesses of the wedding get repurposed for good use. And that begins with the food. Many wedding caterers, in an effort to ensure no guest goes without their fair share of food, grossly overestimate the amount of food needed for the reception. That means there may be plenty of

appetizers and main courses leftover, all of which couples have paid for. There are a number of ways that food can be saved and given to others. * Create classy takehome-packages. People have become much less averse to taking home food they cannot finish from restaurants. As portion sizes continue to grow, taking a portion home to enjoy later is both cost-conscious and a healthy idea. While a wedding may be a formal event, it shouldn’t preclude guests from feeling comfortable taking home any uneaten food, particularly if they like the food. Provide the reception center with decorative to-go boxes or containers that can be used to package any food guests want to take home with them. Small, handled paper or fabric tote bags will make the leftovers

that much more portable. * Donate leftover food. Neighborhood food banks may be willing to accept food donations from your wedding. Although many deal with only nonperishable foods, some will pick up both. Before the wedding you can inquire within certain organizations to find out which specialize in what area of food collection. Feeding America (feedingamerica.org) has an extensive list of food banks and food-rescue programs available online. Some organizations can pick up food and deliver it within the same day to a soup kitchen. If you cannot find an organization to help, you may actually be able to donate your food to livestock. Some farms and recreational farmers will feed pigs leftover food. This is a way to ensure food will not go to waste. * Help reduce waste. You can speak with your wedding caterer about cutting down on the amount of food without making it overtly noticeable to guests. First, consider a sit-down dinner where portions are carefully measured rather than buffet where amounts are estimated. Also, removing extra courses such as dessert or breakfast bars can further keep down the amount of extra food as well as the cost. * Take it home. If you will not be traveling to your honeymoon directly after the wedding reception, you can have the catering staff package the food and you can bring it

appreciation. Though welcome bags need not be complicated or include any especially costly items, couples should keep in mind a few things when creating them for their guests. * Include an item that can be tied into your wedding. Couples having a destination wedding might want to include a memento of the trip in their guests’ welcome bags. Bottle openers, coffee mugs or keychains with the name of the locale printed on them make good additions to a welcome bag. But even those couples who aren’t having a destination wedding can include an item that reminds their guests of their trip, such as a shot glass with the couple’s name and the location of wedding. * Choose nonperishable foods. Some couples choose to include a snack in their guests’ welcome bags. Food makes a great addition, especially if your guests must travel a great distance to your wedding. The snack can quell some hunger that developed on their trip in or be enjoyed on their equally long trip

home. When including food in the welcome bag, be sure to include nonperishable items. Many hotels ask for the welcome bags a few days in advance, so perishable items are sure to spoil before guests arrive at the hotel. * Include bottled water. Bottled water makes a valuable addition to a welcome bag. Guests are used to staying in their homes, where a midnight glass of cold water is just down the hall in their kitchens. But vending machines that dispense cold drinks are not always easy to find in hotels, and guests will appreciate a bottle of water waiting for them in their rooms. A bottle of water before going to bed at night may also help those guests who might have enjoyed themselves a bit too much at the reception. * Include directions to the wedding venue and a schedule of the weekend’s activities. Couples typically include directions to the venue with their wedding invitations, which should indicate when and where the wedding will take place.

home. Keep your freezer empty and put the food inside. When you return from your honeymoon you will have plenty of dinners already premade so you can enjoy life as newlyweds. Otherwise, you can invite friends over to view honeymoon photos and serve the food as refreshments. * Recycle flowers. Food may not be the only item leftover at the end of the night. Guests who may not have taken home favors or centerpieces will leave behind many beautiful items that would normally end up in the trash. Flowers and gifts can be donated to a hospital or senior center to brighten the atmosphere. Be sure to keep just a few favors available for people who send gifts in the mail since they weren’t able to attend the festivities. There are a number of ways to ensure that the excesses of a wedding can be put to good use. By donating food and other items or simply taking them home with you, you can stretch your money and resources further
