failure. A resolution has none of these elements. So forget about your resolutions this year and set a goal. Set a goal that you can realistically achieve, one that you can evaluate your progress, and give yourself a reward for achieving it. If you haven’t noticed, there is a relatively important election looming in 2012. We are continually inundated with ads and television coverage of the candidates. Don’t be misled by all the nonsense. Your right to vote is a very important part of our American way of life. I encourage all of you get educated on the candidates for national and local elections before you cast your vote. Who you vote for is up to you but don’t vote for someone just because of what you hear in the mainstream media. Hear what the candidates themselves have to say and the past record of each candidate. Each individual American vote counts. ■

Laying Down the Law

W

elcome to the New Year! I am excited about 2012 and what it holds for you and your family. At the beginning of each New Year, many people will sit down and make resolutions about what they would like to accomplish during the upcoming 12 months. Many resolutions center on personal development or weight management. I find that the universal truth about resolutions is that they are almost never fulfilled. Rarely do we hear people talk about how they successfully completed their resolutions from the previous year. This year, I am officially cancelling the process of making resolutions for the upcoming year. That’s right, CANCELLED! There will be no more making resolutions to take that college class, learn Spanish, or lose 20 pounds. Essentially, resolutions are statements of what we would like to accomplish but they carry no penalties, rewards, or methods of enforcement and evaluation. This is why most resolutions don’t work out. So what do we need? I like the term “goal.” A goal is measurable at all times. You always know where you stand and how far you are away. Meeting a set goal should always have rewards and, conversely, failure to meet a goal should have consequences. A goal has a set time frame to accomplish and is easily evaluated for success or

Every Day… by Scott Tinkham

Every day I get a little older, I’ve become nice to myself, and less critical of myself, and the world. I am starting to believe that’s thing do really happen for a reason and if you are patient and hang in there, you’ll find things most often work out for the best. The longer you live you’re going to experience the loss of dear friends and loved ones who leave this world too soon, and that bothers me. When you look back on a memory you become forgetful of the bad ones and they fade until they’re forgotten and all you have left are memories of the good times and the good things. I do remember the important stuff. Like smiles and the feeling of being loved. Like you, my heart has been broken. You can’t love without love lost. How can your heart not break when you lose a loved

one, but broken hearts are what give us strength and understanding and compassion.. I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my beard turning grey and the hair on my head turn loose, and to have my laugh lines be forever etched into deep grooves on my face. So many have never laughed, and so many have died before their hair could turn silver. As you get older, it’s easier to see the big picture. Life is good and as you get older you’re not afraid to be a little corny and say things like “Life’s a garden, dig it” I am learning to like me. I am not going to live forever, but while I am still here, I will not waste time thinking about what could have been, or worrying about what will be. I’m going to live 2012 in the now, with gratitude. Happy New Year Wise County ■

Dave Says

A parent’s last days

Dear Dave, I need advice on how to handle things where my mom is concerned. She was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) a year ago, and now she wants our family to do things together that we can’t afford. Last summer, we took a trip to Norway, and mom paid half, but it still made things hard on us financially. What can I do? - Emily Dear Emily, I’m really sorry to hear about your mom. I know that’s tough on everyone in more than just a financial sense. What you’re facing is very sad, and I understand that you want to spend as much time with her as possible. At the same time, though, you can’t bankrupt your family, either. I think you need to sit down with her and gently explain that while you love her and want to spend as much time with her as possible, you can’t put your family in financial danger to help her with a bucket list. You have to balance your love for your mom and this awful situation with what’s best for your own household. Make reasonable decisions on what you can and can’t do with her. Can you stretch yourself to do a few special things? Sure, but stretching is one thing; breaking is another. If she’s leaving you insurance money, you could stretch a little bit, then put that back into your funds later. But don’t go into debt to make these things happen. That will just start a cycle of borrowing that you can’t afford and leave you with a pile of payments later on top of your grief. Your family has enough to worry about right now. Don’t put a bunch of debt on the list, too. That’s going too far. God bless you, Emily. - Dave

The meaning of diversification

Dear Dave, What exactly do you mean when you talk about diversifying your investments? - Sharon Dear Sharon, When it comes to investing, diversification simply means spreading your money around. This helps reduce risk, because you’re not putting all of your money into one company. This way, you won’t lose everything if that one company goes broke. It’s also why I tell people not to put all of their money into their own company’s stock. I have lots of mutual funds with one or two mutual fund companies. Within those two companies they’re called fund families. Think of it like a brand of soup. Campbell’s® is a brand, but they have all kinds of 8

WISEFamilyMagazine.com • 940.210.1769

different soup. I also have money in different banks and in different money market accounts, and I have money in different types of real estate. So, I’ve got several different kinds of investments, but not a million different things running around out there. If I listed them all out they wouldn’t even take up an entire page. I like to keep things fairly clean and simple, and I encourage you to do the same! - Dave

A down payment is not an investment

Dear Dave, I’m saving up money to buy a house in the next couple of years. How should I invest this money before I actually buy something? - Candace Dear Candace, The problem is that you’re not really investing; you’re just saving. Investing means you aren’t going to touch the money for five years or more. If you may use the cash to buy something within five years, you’re really just kind of “parking” the money for a little while. If it were me, I’d put it in a money market account. It’s basically just going to sit there and not earn much, but you won’t lose anything, either. If you’re lucky, you might see one percent interest in the short term, but that’s about all you can expect considering the lowinterest rate environment we’re in these days. - Dave

Who’s liable?

Dear Dave, I attend a small church with about 100 members. There is a $97,000 mortgage at 8.75 percent on the building, and the note was signed only by the pastor. In the event of default, are the members of the congregation liable? - Charlene Dear Charlene, Unless you signed the note, you are not liable. If the pastor signed the note personally, or on behalf of the congregation, it would actually depend on the wording in the note as to who is liable in case of default. But this whole situation is kind of silly, and I’ll tell you why. If everyone in the congregation gave an extra $83 a month in their tithe – that’s only about $20 more every Sunday – you could have this mortgage knocked out in a year! There’s absolutely no reason for your church to be in debt 12 months from now. This is a prime example of what happens when a church adopts the same mentality as the rest of the world. The Bible itself warns us that the borrower is slave to the lender! - Dave

Dear Dave, Is it always a good idea to put the maximum amount of money you can afford into a down payment when buying your first home? - David Dear David, Absolutely! Even though most people can’t pay cash up front for a home, you always want to make as big a down payment as possible on any home you buy. Making a down payment of at least 20 percent helps you avoid private mortgage insurance, plus the whole idea is to pay that sucker off and become debt-free as fast as possible. Also, avoid 30-year mortgage plans. Stick with a 15-year, fixed rate loan. Now, when it comes to putting money toward your down payment, make sure you don’t touch your emergency fund of three to six months of expenses or your retirement savings. Those things are off limits. But scrape together any other extra cash you can, pile it up, and apply it to your down payment. You’ll be glad you did! - Dave

Relating to parents

Dear Dave, My mom and dad are terrible with money. They’re getting older, so I’d like to see them start saving something for retirement. How can I teach them your principles? - Suzanne Dear Suzanne, I hate to say it, but you probably can’t. My grandmother used to say, “Those convinced against their will are of the same opinion still.” When you start trying to talk to your parents about money, you run into what’s called powdered butt syndrome. Once someone has powdered your behind, they usually don’t want your opinion on money or anything else. S till, as parents get older, especially if you have a particular skill or expertise, they might ask your opinion from time to time. It may be hard for them to take you seriously, though, even if you’re a world-renown expert. To them, you’re always going to be their little girl. It’s great if they will listen to you, but you’ll probably have better luck getting them in front of someone knowledgeable in the field. I’m talking about someone who isn’t you, even if they’re not quite as smart as you! - Dave

Don’t do it!

Dear Dave, My husband and I have been married for three months, and we’re debt-free. Right now, we’re trying to save up a 20 percent down payment for a house. I work for a

real estate company, and they’re really pushing us to take advantage of a first-time homebuyer deal. The program offers 100 percent financing, no money down and no private mortgage insurance. They say it’s a great deal. What do you think? - Stacy Dear Stacy, You guys are off to a great start! Don’t blow it now. Those people are wrong. I grew up in the real estate world, and this is a bad idea. Slow down. It’s great that you guys are young and debtfree, but you need to do things that are smart for you. And for you, smart includes a couple of things. First, make sure you have an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses in place. Then, keep saving up for a big down payment. You know, when I hear the advice you were given I just want to smack somebody. Haven’t the mortgage lenders learned anything from the last few years? Nothing down, interest-only and sub-prime loans are a big part of the reason for the financial debacle in this country. A house is not a blessing when you’re broke, and a bargain is only a bargain when you’re ready to buy! I always recommend waiting at least a year after you’re married to buy a house. It takes that long to decide how close you want to live to your in-laws! Plus, you want to spend some time getting used to each other, and knowing each other even better, before making what will be your largest asset purchase. - Dave ■

The Joy of Service to Others “I slept and dreamt that life was joy. I awoke and saw that life was service. I acted and behold, service was joy.” - Rabindranath Tagore s we begin a new year, we should determine to pursue joy in our work experiences. Joy is defined as, both “receiving great happiness” and “something that brings happiness”. It is then by definition, a give and take experience. It must become an everyday action; present in our every waking moment. Joy is contagious. Your daily expression of joy changes your workplace and all the attitudes of the people involved in your day. You must consciously offer joy as an honest expression of your view of life and work expectations. The instilling of joy changes the atmosphere of success in your businesses. This change will reflect in both staff and clients alike. It will provide positive focus and ease negative expectations. As stated by writer Richard Wagner, “Joy is not in things, it is in us.” The art of joyful expression is an attitude. Joy differs from general cheerfulness. Joy is a trait. It is who we are; cheerfulness is conditional-dependant on circumstances. Similar to a muscle, joy grows as we feed and exercise it. Are conditions in your workplace conducive to the growth of joy? If so, positive results happen. Employees love to come to work. Customers come back, repeatedly. People grow in personal worth. It is true. “Joy comes from using your potential.” When joy is present as an everyday atmosphere in your workplace, interpersonal pressures seem to ease. Trust and self-confidence grows. We increase the value of our business by increasing the value of our employees and also the lives of our clients. True joy abides by choice.

Consider the businesses you have visited where joy seemed a foreign concept. The lack of true, expressed joy shows on the faces of staff. Does your office need a ‘joy’ adjustment? Take the time to stop and evaluate the atmosphere in your place of employment. Special note should be made; this ‘Joy Adjustment’, in a perfect world, should flow from the head down in the business but regardless of where you fit into your workplace, let it start with you. Remember, joy is contagious. It is time to ‘infect’ your co-workers with joy! Make the decision to pursue joy - in the life of your work, your home, and your daily activities. Change the world as you experience it. You are unique. As a member of mankind, it is your responsibility to change, develop and grow both individually and in the lives of others in your world. Start today to make a joyful difference everywhere you find yourself. True service to the world is joy. Express yourself and watch the world take on a new shine.. ■

Wise County Wonderings

Did You Know…

T

he Wise County Heritage Museum houses a research archive where you may find much of the infomation you need in your search for your family? There are several books on the history of many Texas counties. There are census records, funeral home information, cemetery information not just Wise County, but for adjoining counties. Since many of Wise County’s first settlers came to Texas from Tennessee you will find many volumes of information from that state. There is information on other states as well. You will find ships lists of those coming into the United states. Thanks to the late Catherine Troxell Gonzalez, we have the Wise County messenger abstracts beginning with the 1880 issues, when it was published in Paradise, through 1910. These are indexed and makes it easy to find if your relatives married, had children, died, divorced, etc. during that time period. Obituaries have been sorted by year and date. Many of the family files have been recorded on CDs, and are available to purchase. These are just a few of what you may find in the archive. The archive is open every day from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, except Sunday. If a person is not a member, it will cost $1.00 to use the facilities, plus the cost of copies made and the use of the microfilm reader. (members, too, must pay for copies and use of the reader). We do not allow books to be checked out of the building. Our workers are very knowledgeable as to what is available and will be of great help to you. ■

20 Foods to Help You Look and Feel Great by Dina Aronson

I

T’S A FACT: WHAT YOU EAT HAS A POWERFUL effect on how you look and feel. Of course, we all know that no single food is a miracle cure for a poor diet. But if you already eat a well-balanced diet that emphasizes vegetables, fruit, whole grains, and beans, a few strategic choices can put you over the top in terms of how you look and feel. 1. Apples Apples are a good source of pectin, a soluble fiber that provides bulk and digests slowly, helping you feel full. A 1997 study in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition found that 5 g of pectin was enough to leave people feeling satisfied for up to four hours. Two large apples provide about two-thirds that amount. 2. Black Beans They’re low in fat and packed with 15 g of fiber per cup (about 60 percent of your daily requirement), which fills you up and digests slowly so you’re less likely to crave unhealthy foods. 3. Cantaloupe It satisfies a sweet tooth but is superlow in calories (less than 100 in half a cantaloupe) and nutrient-rich, says nutritionist Carol Ann Rinzler. For a filling, balanced lunch, Rinzler suggests topping half a seeded cantaloupe with a scoop of protein-rich bean salad. 4. Carrots They’re a smart weight-loss food: convenient for snacking, low in calories, and rich in fiber. (One cup of carrot sticks contains just 52 calories and 4 g of fiber, about 16 percent of your daily fiber needs.) A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that fiber intake predicted weight gain in young adults. The more fiber they ate, the less likely they were to gain weight. 5. Cereal A 1999 study in the International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition found that people who consume high-fiber breakfasts eat less at lunch than those who eat low-fiber or high-fat breakfasts. For best results, look for cereals that contain at least 6 g of fiber per serving. 6. Chile Peppers Some scientists say capsaicin, the substance that gives chiles their kick, may help your body burn calories at a slightly faster rate, although more research is needed. Scientists do agree that capsaicin decreases your appetite when consumed from whole peppers. Varieties include jalapeno, cayenne, and habanero (the hottest). Place half a pepper (with some ribs and seeds removed to control the heat) in marinara sauce as it simmers.

7. Green Tea A 1999 study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that people who consumed green tea burned more calories than those who took either caffeine alone or a placebo. For weight-loss benefits, pour 2 cups of water, brought just to a boil, over 1 teaspoon of green tea leaves. Steep in a covered container for 30 minutes. Drink up to 3 cups a day. 8. Onions Nutritionist Verne Varona says onions accelerate the break down of fats in your food. As a result, your body is more apt to excrete them than to store them in fat cells. It’s also worth noting that one large onion contains a meager 57 calories. 9. Strawberries They’re full of water, high in fiber (3 g per cup), and superlow in calories (just 43 calories per cup), which makes them ideal for weight loss. 10. Vegetable Soup Soup contains relatively few calories but takes up space in your stomach so you feel full, says researcher Rolls. She suggests that you eat a bowl of brothy vegetable soup before meals to dampen your appetite. Avoid soups that contain cream, cheese, or other high-calorie ingredients. 11. Whole-Grain Bread A 2001 study in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association found that breads that contain unrefined grains require you to chew vigorously and create a feeling of fullness, making you less likely to overeat. Scan bread labels and choose brands that list whole grains (like whole wheat, barley, or oats) as the first ingredient and contain at least 2 g of fiber per slice. 12. Brown Rice It’s a source of complex carbohydrates, which provide sustained fuel and prevent fatigue. It’s also rich in the B vitamins that help turn food into energy. If you’re short on time, try instant brown rice, which takes only 10 minutes to prepare. 13. Water If you feel tired despite getting enough sleep and eating well, drink more water. Fatigue is a common symptom of dehydration, and most people “are in a constant state of low-grade dehydration,” says naturopath Mark Stengler, N.D. Drink 6 to 8 glasses a day. 14. Avocados They’re one of the richest plant sources of B vitamins. (Half an avocado provides one-third of your recommended daily amount.) A ripe avocado yields to pressure when gently squeezed. A rock-hard avocado will ripen in a few days at room temperature. 15. Bananas These convenient snacks provide

magnesium, a muscle-tension fighter that helps you relax, and more than half your daily requirement of [B.sub.6], a nutrient that may ease depression. 16. Oatmeal It’s rich in thiamin, a B vitamin. Even a mild deficiency of this vitamin can hamper brain function. Unlike other sources of thiamin, like pork and liver, oatmeal is very low in saturated fat and rich in heart-healthy soluble fiber. 17. Orange Juice One 8-ounce glass provides 18 percent of your daily requirement of folic acid, a B vitamin that may prevent depression. Several studies suggest that people with low levels of folic acid are generally more depressed than those with normal levels. 18. Potatoes Potatoes produce a calming effect because they clear your blood-stream of amino acids that compete with another amino acid, tryptophan. When tryptophan is free to enter your brain, it helps make serotonin, a brain chemical that induces calmness, says

researcher Judith Wurtman, Ph.D. If you really need to relax, she recommends a plain baked potato; eating highprotein foods at the same time neutralizes the effect. 19. Almonds Twenty-four almonds contain 9 g of monounsaturated fats (as well as some good-for-skin omega-3 fats) and 6 g of protein. They also have nearly half your recommended daily amount of vitamin E, 7 percent of your daily calcium needs, and a notable amount of zinc, all nutrients that keep skin healthy. 20. Tomatoes They’re packed with the antioxidants beta carotene, vitamin C, and lycopene, all known to protect against sun damage and skin cancer. To increase your absorption of lycopene, a powerful antioxidant, researchers recommend cooking tomatoes in a small amount of olive oil. Life Skills

Goal Setting Tips that Work As a teenager I loved the idea of making New Year’s resolutions. It was fun thinking about all the things in life I would like to change. I viewed this process much like asking a fairy godmother to grant me three wishes, that somehow, just by asking, I would be granted my request. The idea of hard work and focus to bring about change did not enter my mind. I am sure my list read something like lose weight and save money. This makes me chuckle today since I maintained a healthy weight, and without a goal for saving money, what was the point? Like many teens, I did not realize the value personal reflection and planning had to direct my life. Over time I did give up making meaningless New Year’s resolutions in favor of setting believable, measurable, and challenging goals that would define my destiny. Start With the End in Mind Why do you want to achieve a particular goal? The more fully you can answer this question the more motivation you will have to achieve it. To set a financial goal to save for retirement, while being important, may not be enough to motive you. Take time to think through what you would like your retirement to look like and then research what it will take financially to make that a reality. Pictures are powerful. Consider creating a visual storyboard of what you envision your life looking like when you achieve your goal as a way to help you stay motivated. Your Attitude Determines Your Altitude Many goals are defeated by negative self-talk that fuels a defeatist attitude. A positive attitude is vital

for achieving your goals. Write your goal out as though you already have achieved it using positive and motivating language. For example, “I look forward to my daily workout. It is fun! I love how I feel and how all my clothes fit.” Post this where you can read it every day. Words are powerful and how you speak about yourself and your goals will either motivate you or defeat you. You Are Who You Hang With Surround yourself with people who will support your goals. If your goal is to improve your food choices for better health, hanging out with those who load up on soda, fast-food, and large portion sizes will be a challenge. Find a friend who loves to work out, eat healthy, and enjoys a fit lifestyle. Time spent with people who have mastered a goal you are working toward will prove to be motivating and inspiring. The beginning of the year is a natural time to reflect, refocus, and reframe your life. Take some time to think about what you would like your life to look like next year, in five years, and twenty years. The choices you make today will create the life you will live tomorrow. Here is to your success! ■ Deborah King, AICI CIP Deborah King is President of Final Touch Finishing School, Inc. which she founded in 1989 in Seattle. 10 Ways to Nurture Children Today

C

Be intentional in your efforts to connect right now.

onnecting as a family should be simpler than ever. But somehow our hectic lives and work schedules trip us up. Some of us go days without a hug. Days! We must make time for more nurturance. We Have a Wii—But We Need a ‘We’ Clinician Michael Ungar discusses the need for our children to feel noticed and loved in order to embrace “we” instead of simply “me” in The We Generation: Raising Socially Responsible Kids (De Capo, 2009). Ungar says parents often attempt to connect through expensive material things, by becoming too permissive, or even by overprotecting. But the key to connection is to offer opportunities for compassion because “Give a child a chance to connect, and she will.” To connect, we need to nurture. 10 Ideas for Nurturance The following are an expression of nurturing themes weaved through my professional and personal experience and from books referenced above. 1. Laugh ‘til your cheeks ache. The latest research supports that laughter can decrease stress hormones and boost the immune system! As Daniel Pink points out in A Whole New Mind (Riverhead, 2005) “laughter is a social activity—and the evidence is vast that people who have regular, satisfying connections to other people are healthier and happier.” Tell jokes, watch comedy, and most importantly, model a good sense of humor yourself. 2. Play for your health. Backyard football or Monopoly at the dining room table may register as old fashioned “just in the movies” scenarios reserved for “other” families, but they aren’t. Get outside. Touch each other. Fall in the mud. Laugh out loud. It’s not time spent being “unproductive.” It is life. 3. Bring the spiritual home. Whether you attend religious services or not, be intentional about discussing and modeling the values of your faith. It is quite easy to get caught up in the realm of the physical world so it takes conscious effort on your part to provide balance. 4. Frequently provide a stage. Habitually ask your child what they think they do well and then have them demonstrate. For my son, it has always thrilled him to show off his ability to effortlessly walk on his hands. What is it for your child? Writing cursive? Pouring juice without help? They love showing you new skills and strengths. Your glowing response makes them feel ten feet tall.

5. Leave work behind. Easier said than done. Take as many family vacations as your employment allows. The opportunities which will spring from time away from the grind relaxing with your children are pure GOLD and will add up to memories for a lifetime. No one at the end of their life wishes they had just taken less vacation. 6. Eat three. Set a new rule about family meals together: everybody is expected at the dinner table at least three times a week. While it may not always be realistic to squeeze in three dinners, think about Saturday breakfasts, Sunday brunches, or Wednesday late night cookies and milk. At our house, we have Italian Friday Nights where we are often joined by a few of our children’s friends. 7. Time Always Matters. Give them your time. So often we underestimate how much our kids want to spend moments with us. It’s important to carve out family time even if you get the message their friends have passed you up on the influence scale. 8. Listen to highs and lows. Implement this easy best/worst exercise into every mealtime conversation. Ask your child to identify their best and worst daily moments. (Don’t use this time to lecture if their ‘worst’ happens to be failing an exam.) Open your heart and connect with the feelings they express. Share their joy! Cry with them over defeat. If you haven’t tried this, you may be surprised at how much you’ll learn about your kids’ inner lives. 9. Create a “We.” Rally your children to help with a project. Whether it is helping an elderly neighbor with gardening, painting the family room, volunteering at church, or organizing the garage, join forces and see that the fruits of your labor extend way beyond an afternoon of hard work. 10. You don’t have to be a great writer to write great love notes. Words are powerful and sometimes easier expressed on paper. Fill the page with dreamy thoughts, your wishes and hopes, and what makes them awesome. Leave the note on their pillow, and know it will touch them deeply ■
