How To Be Lovable You’ve got to be real. Don’t be a phony. Come on as yourself. The hardest thing in the world is to be something you’re not. As you get closer and closer and closer to what you are, be that, and come on all the time that way. You’ll find it’s an easy way to live. The easiest thing to be in the world is you. The most difficult thing to be is what other people want you to be. Don’t let them put you in that position. Find “you,” who you are, come on as you are. Then you can live simply. - Leo Buscaglia

Health Wise 7 Ways You Can Take Care of Your Heart Health

A

fter having chest pains or even a heart attack, a doctor might suggest steps to take and then people would begin to change their lives. Now, it has become increasingly obvious that the time to think about these issues is before problems develop. Here are 7 ways you can begin. 1. Exercise regularly. A regular workout is good for your heart as well as your waistline. You do not have to bench press heavy weights or run marathons. Anything that will elevate your heart rate to a good target level should be sufficient. The right level for good heart health should be somewhere between your resting heart rate and your maximum heart rate. A good rule of thumb is that if you can converse as you exercise, you are not overdoing it. 2. Eat colorful, low-fat meals. Adding color to your meals will give you a lot of nutrition to help you maintain good heart health. If you eat an assortment of colors of vegetables and fruits, you will be getting a variety of vitamins and minerals too. As you concentrate on produce as a key element in your diet, remember that these foods should not be drowned in heavy fats. Accompany them with fish or lean chicken for a low-fat meal. 3. Get good sleep. Getting enough rest is vital to good heart health. A strong correlation seems to exist between a lack of sleep and developing certain heart conditions. It appears that 7 to 8 hours is about right, while 5 or less can be harmful. Even sleeping too much may be a heart risk. Do yourself a favor and get just the right amount of sleep. If you think you have a sleep disorder, this is a great reason to get help with it. 4. Reduce your stress. Stress not only creates problems within your body, such as dangerously elevated levels of certain hormones; it also may contribute to how you manage your other risks. When you are under stress,

you are not so focused on what you will eat, how you will exercise, and other habits you might have. You can improve your health by learning to meditate, pray, or just plain relax. 5. Take fish oil supplements. Omega-3 fish oil supplements have been shown to help with certain aspects of heart health. If your triglycerides are high, it can be a precursor to heart problems if not treated. Omega-3 fish oil supplements can lower those triglycerides significantly or keep them at a healthy level. Omega-3 has also been shown to help by reducing arrhythmias and decreasing plaque in the circulatory system. 6. Try garlic supplements. You may or may not decide to use them as a part of your daily regimen. The evidence on whether garlic helps your heart is mixed. It seems to lower blood cholesterol somewhat, and may lower blood pressure. It can be helpful, and many people have seen good results from using it. It is not a dangerous substance by any means so it would not hurt to try. 7. You can get a supplement containing plant sterols. Plant sterols are well known for their ability to maintain low cholesterol levels. They work by imitating cholesterol and preventing its absorption into the body. They can be found added to certain foods or in capsule form as supplements. It is never too early to think about taking care of your heart. It is important to see your doctor and discuss all the ways you can live a healthy life. Not all methods are suitable for everyone, and only you and your doctor can decide. However, these 7 paths to heart health and wellness are a good place to begin the conversation. Will Thomas is a diet and wellness coach. here is a day in the life of every teen that they will never forget. This is the day that the shackles of youth are removed and freedom of adulthood reins supreme. This day, you are no longer a child but the master of your destiny, the chieftain of your future, and the conqueror of all that you survey. This is the day that you are allowed to drive. Getting your license in Texas, however, is not like it was years ago when your drove around with the Coach/ drivers-ed teacher a few times, took your test, and were given a license. Today, there are multiple tasks you are required to complete before your journey is complete. The licensing process is roughly broken down into three steps. 1. Apply for a license. You must apply in person at a local DPS office and meet several conditions (age, residency, written exam, personal information, etc.) 2. Get your learner license. If you are under 18, a learner license is required. You are required to take a drivers education program or the parent driver education program, submit proof of school enrollment and attendance, called a VOE form, and get parental authorization. 3. Complete the Graduated Driver License Program (GDL). The GDL has two phases of driving for minors. Phase One is six months and requires you to maintain a valid learner license and be accompanied by a person 21 years old or older at all times when driving. Once you

reach the age of 16 and have completed the classroom portions, you can obtain your “provisional license” and graduate to Phase Two. Phase Two restricts your driving privileges during the 12-month period following the issuance of the license. During this time, you can’t have more than one passenger who is not over the age of 21, are limited in driving times, and cannot operate a wireless device while driving. Once Phase Two is completed, the remaining restrictions no longer apply. The list of things that can delay your freedom is more than just the three step process above. If you commit certain Class C misdemeanor crimes (fine only), that involve drugs, alcohol, or driving outside your permit among other things, you may have a lengthy delay before you are permitted to legally drive. Do not take this lightly. If you have further questions about this, please contact your local DPS Drivers License Office or visit their website at www.txdps.state.tx.us. See you next month! ■

Dave Says

Sister needs an attitude adjustment!

Dear Dave, My older sister hasn’t worked in two years. She hasn’t even looked for a job, she’s 36, and she’s been living with our parents the whole time. They want to set her up in an apartment and pay the rent, but I think this is a bad idea. I love her, but what can you do for someone like this? - Dee Dear Dee, First of all, your parents aren’t helping matters. She needs a job and a future, and she’s not going to find either one as long as mom and dad are enabling her irresponsible behavior. It’s sad for parents when they see their children harming themselves through their own stupidity and laziness. She’s being both stupid and lazy, and unfortunately, these things aren’t illegal. There may not be a great ending to this story, because it all rests on your sister. She has the entire family tied up in knots, and in a sense, she’s controlling everyone right now. But if you want my advice, here it is. Give her the address of the nearest homeless shelter, and send her on her way. Right now, she’s not just lazy and irresponsible, she’s arrogant. And arrogance can only be erased after someone has been broken. When she’s been broken, then she’ll be coachable. In situations like this, you have to love someone enough to let them be broken. Otherwise, they’ll continue in the same destructive behavior pattern. This is sad, and I wish none of you were involved in such a mess. But she’s had the opportunity to stop this inappropriate behavior at any point during the last two years. Chances are, if she’ll change her attitude and become more humble and trainable, she can build from there. - Dave

Is online trading okay?

Dear Dave, How do you feel about online trading for building a stock portfolio? Assuming that someone has done their homework on which stocks to buy, is there anything else to know about do-it-yourself trading? - Kevin Dear Kevin, There’s one very important thing to know – don’t do it! This kind of thing is one rung below day trading on the ladder of stupidity. Here’s the problem. When most people talk about “doing their homework” on single stocks they’re just barely skimming the surface. And most of the time this involves just talking to their broke friends. There’s no way you and your golfing buddy are going to dig up and decipher the kind of solid, reliable information you’ll need to be successful at this kind of thing. I’d much rather go with a mutual fund that’s spent millions of dollars analyzing companies and doing real research. What you’re talking about is a million times riskier than using good growth stock mutual funds – selected by professionals – with 90 to 100 different stocks. - Dave

The car or the snowball?

Leasing from your company?

Dear Jonathan, I’d hold on to it if your car can make it a while longer. But if it’s really on its last legs, and you’re about to fall through a rusted floorboard, you might consider your plan. You need to ask yourself if you’re just whining, or if it’s an actual situation. It sounds like you guys are doing a fabulous job so

Dear Stephanie, A few automakers do this kind of thing, but I’d advise investigating the deal very carefully. And it wouldn’t hurt to take a cold shower first – just to make sure you wash off any car fever you may have. Some of the automaker offers are just another way for the company to fleece drivers. But some manufacturers offer their employees programs that aren’t a traditional lease. A few of them offer the use of a high-quality car for very little money per month and no hidden catches. In these cases it can work out pretty well. In some

Dear Dave, We’re working on our debt snowball and are scheduled to become debt-free except for our home a year from now. The problem is I’ve got a very old car that’s on its last legs. Would it be okay for us to put the debt snowball on hold for a month or two, and save up money for a newer, inexpensive used car that’s in better shape? - Jonathan

far of paying down your debt. Even if you take a month or two off to save up for a better car, you’ll still have everything paid off except the house in about the same period of time. I’m not going to fuss about a couple of months’ difference in this kind of situation. Doesn’t it feel great when you actually sit down and take a moment to think and formulate a plan instead of just wandering around lost? You guys have thought this thing out, and now you’re ready to move ahead with a sensible idea! - Dave

Dear Dave, I know how you feel about leasing a car. But what about the car leasing programs that auto manufacturers offer their employees? - Stephanie

Investments using home equity?

Dear Dave, Right now our debt is keeping us from investing. Do you recommend making investments with a home equity line of credit? - Paul Dear Paul, Let me answer this very, very carefully. No! You don’t borrow on your home, Paul. You never want to put something as precious and important as your home in jeopardy just for the sake of investing. Follow the Baby Steps. First, get $1,000 in the bank to start your emergency fund. Second, pay off all debts from smallest to largest – except for your house – using the debt snowball. This will lead you to Baby Step Three, which is fully funding your emergency fund with three to six months of expenses. Once you’ve done all this you’re ready for Baby Step Four, which is investing in Roth IRAs and other pre-tax retirement. When you’re debt-free except for your house, you’ll find investing is easy because you’ve freed up your most important wealth building tool – your income! - Dave

That being said, my perspective probably won’t help. There’s a saying that goes, “Those convinced against their will are of the same opinion still.” He needs a serious change of heart. You said you love my plan, right? Then sit down with this guy, and show him the numbers. Show him where all the money is going, and tell him it’s just plain wrong for him to eat out all the time while you have to work just to make ends meet. People can do all kinds of things when they’re stressed out because of money problems. I’m sure taking a cut in salary was a blow to his self-esteem. However, it’s time for a strong wake-up call when these behaviors start to have a negative impact on family and finances! - Dave ■

Dave Says

instances you’d lose more in value every month – even if you bought a car with cash – than you would pay out under a good employee program. Some companies even offer gas and more in the deal. Just make sure you check the details thoroughly. Use your head and a calculator – not your heart – when making the decision! - Dave

Dave Ramsey For more financial help, please visit daveramsey.com

Time to break out the lunchbox!

Dear Dave, I love your plan, but I think my husband is attached to eating out. Budgeting is very hard for him, and the cost of his fast food lunches is making it difficult for us. He’s also taken a salary cut recently, and I’m working a parttime job to help us get by. Can you give him some tough love from a male perspective? - Suzanne Dear Valerie, It sounds to me like you’ve been way too nice. You’re acting like a mother dealing with little kid, and that’s not a good way to relate to a husband. Plus, if you guys are having money problems, the only time either of you should see the inside of a restaurant is if you’re working there! A man has several jobs in life, and one of those is to take care of his wife and children. You’re wife shouldn’t have to work so you can stuff your face with fast food. When you married him, you didn’t want a little boy. You wanted a man. He needs to grow up and start acting like one! 940.210.1769 • WISE

The heat is on: Five getaways to kindle the romance Kealakekua Bay,” says Away.com’s senior editor Kate Chandler. Hawaii is known for its sandy beaches, but it has so much to offer, such as snorkeling expeditions, rolling golf courses, interesting cultural and natural history and plenty of yummy food choices. You can also choose to do nothing at all besides just basking in your love somewhere indescribable.

Take a hot air balloon ride

What better way to experience the beauty of Napa and Sonoma wine country than with a birds-eye view? Book a sunrise or sunset tour, complete with a mini-picnic and local sparkling wine to set the mood as your drift above the vines and wineries. Very few things can match the serene energy you feel as you watch the first rays of sun begin to paint the morning sky. (ARA) - Romance is in the air. Whether you are celebrating Valentine’s Day, planning a honeymoon, or just looking for a fun getaway with your better half, these trip ideas are guaranteed to ignite a spark.

Escape on a cruise

Put away your smartphone, shun the hassle of cooking and don’t even think about making the bed. A cruise ship is the perfect place for couples to skirt reality for a while. Pretty much anything you could want is at your disposal and you hardly have to lift a finger. The top cruise lines have really upped their game in the culinary realm, so try a few different entrees and a few different desserts, and splurge for a drink package. For uber-relaxation, book a couples’ massage. Celebrity Cruise’s AquaSpa, for example, pampers its guests as they literally watch the ocean float by.

Splurge for a dream vacation

Hawaii embodies the words dreamy, romantic and sensual like almost nowhere else. The Big Island of Hawaii was named by Away.com as a top-10 destination for a honeymoon vacation on a budget. “Hawaii is a great choice for a honeymoon, but many people think they can’t afford it. The trick is to look beyond the name-brand places on the Big Island, like Kona, in favor of a hidden-gem like

Hear a gig

The saying goes that it takes two to tango. But in Austin, Texas, you might well swap in the two-step instead. Orbitz. com named Austin one of its 2012 Hotspots, and for good reason. Austin is the self-proclaimed “Live Music Capital of the World,” and this music mecca is living up to its reputation. It’s home to more live-music venues per capita than anywhere else in the United States, so any time, day or night, just follow the sounds to find something playing. While you listen, loosen your belt and enjoy the good eats that Austin has to offer. The city is well known for its barbecue and Tex-Mex dishes.

Watch the stars

For those who prefer to experience the outdoors with a touch of luxury, head somewhere like Amangiri in Canyon Point, Utah. This resort rests on 600 acres and was consciously designed to blend into its surroundings; every window has a sweeping view toward Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. One of the best aspects of the American Southwest, whether you’re staying at a ranch or roughing it in a tent, is that you’re never too far from an unobstructed view of the night sky. Grab a blanket or two and snuggle up for some truly romantic stargazing. ■

Wise County Wonderings

Did You Know…

T

he Wise County historical Commission has compiled a Wise County History Workbook, for any Wise County teacher involved in teaching Wise Counry History? Below is listed a few tidbits from that workbook. Wise County was once a part of Red River County. We officially became a county as approved by the Texas Legislature on January 23, 1856, with the county name to be Wise, named for Henry A. Wise, a Virginia Patriot and statesman. (Oh, did you know a descendant of Mr. Wise lives in Wise County?) Decatur was first called Taylorsville, but some residents became unhappy with President Taylor, and chose Decatur for the naval hero, Stephen Decatur. The first post office was called Odessa, but it had closed for a time, and when a new post office was to be begun, it was found there was one by that name in Ector County, therefore a new name had to be selected, and Newark was chosen. Paradise was known as Eldorado, but when time came for the installation of a post office, there was already one by that name, Paradise Prairie was selected, but was soon shortened to Paradise. We once had a village named Gum, located between Bridgeport and Decatur. The first record we have of white men in Wise County area, is in 1836. A group of Texas soldiers were in a fight with the Indians at a location we know as THE BATTLE OF THE KNOBS. Located a few miles north of Decatur. More can be found about it in C. V. Terrell’s “85 years Texas to the Atomic Bomb.” It is also recorded in Texas Military records in Austin. ■

Wise Information

Tips for taking great family photos (ARA) - Everyone loves when a family photo turns out just right, especially during the holidays when families gather together and holiday photos are abundant. Great photos capture personalities, feelings and emotions, and freeze memories in a time capsule. But often, the photos you snap (especially photos of little ones and large groups) don’t make the cut, aren’t “holiday card worthy” and last less than five seconds before being deleted. Since most families don’t have a resident professional photographer, here are some useful tips to help any member of the family take wonderful pictures that will be shared and saved for generations to come: * Don’t be scared to be the paparazzi. Keep your camera handy at all times and snap lots of photos. When your camera is always handy and you take lots of pictures, you’ll greatly improve your chances of getting the pictures you’ll love. * Lights, camera, action. If you’re tak ing photos outdoors, do it either early in the morning or late in the afternoon. The light tends to be richer at these times and you won’t get squinted eyes and shadows from the overhead sun. If you’re shooting indoors, see which time of day the room lights up the most and choose that time for the photo shoot. * Make sure the group is happy, comfortable and fed. If you have little ones in your group, it is especially important to make sure they are rested and fed before attempting a photo shoot. Make a conscious effort to schedule family photos earlier in the day or later in the afternoon to avoid mid-day meltdowns. * Give babies a comfortable place to lounge. Newborns can be placed in a comfortable (and photo-friendly) place like the Boppy Newborn Lounger. This pillow has a recessed interior so baby can snuggle comfortably in it while you snap

away. Cover it with a white sheet for a neutral background. * If you are shooting wiggly kids, try placing them in a wagon or basket to contain them in one spot and give them a new perspective. * Be aware of the background. It’s easy to focus on a great smile while forgetting about what might be in the background of a picture. Make sure backgrounds are simple and don’t distract from the main attraction - the people. * Set the sports or child mode. If you have a large group and/or children in your group, try using the sports or child mode on your camera instead of the auto setting. These modes are designed to capture clear shots of fast moving subjects and increase your odds of getting a photo where everyone is smiling and has their eyes open. * When shooting little ones, get close and stay low. When taking photos of children, zoom in on their faces and make their faces fill your entire view finder. Also, it’s important to get down on your knees and shoot pictures of kids from their eye level, so you see facial expressions instead of the tops of their heads. * Enlist the help of a friend. Ask a friend to take photos of your family for you so you don’t have to rely on the camera’s timer. This will help to ensure the photos aren’t too posed since your friend can engage you and your family, tell a few jokes and make funny faces to help you capture more natural photos. Great photos capture wonderful memories. A little preparation can ensure that you will be able to share amazing photos of those you love. So, don’t be afraid to act like the paparazzi, get creative and try out new ideas. ■

10 Smart Tips for Your Athlete

E

Prevent sports injuries and play it safe.

ven the mildest injuries can throw a wrench into your child’s fun this sports season so it’s wise to be mindful of ways to keep everyone healthy. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), three million kids get injured in sports each year. Most of these injuries occur as a result of falls, being struck by an object, collisions, and overexertion. Even if your athlete will only be playing backyard sports, keep these safety tips in mind:

1. Protective Gear and New Shoes Are a Must.

As parents we worry about our kids constantly but sometimes we don’t worry about the right things. Helmets save lives! According to the AAP, cycling, skateboarding, and skating are responsible for the majority of sports-related head injuries, so protect their tender noggins. Buy proper mouth guards, protective guards, and the right shoes (FYI: soccer cleats won’t work for baseball). Shoes from last season may be worn down and uneven on the bottom which can cause an ankle to twist, so don’t chance it.

2. See the Doctor for a Check of Previous Injuries.

5. Prioritize Safety During Practices.

The AAP reports that 60% of all organized sportsrelated injuries occur during practice so make sure you talk to your child about wearing proper protective gear and concentrating at practices just as much as during games.

6. Be Aware of Unsafe Playing Fields.

Dips, divots, holes, and uneven surfaces have “sprain” written all over them. Coaches may get busy with players and the nitty gritty, so if possible, parents should take time to walk the field and report any potential issues.

7. Warm-ups and Stretching Are Critical for Safety.

Talk to your child about the threat of straining muscles. Light jogging, stretches, and warm-up exercises warm the body’s tissues and keep them flexible. Warming up also clears the mind, aids focus, and mentally prepares them for the game.

8. Confirm That a First-aid Kit Will Be Accessible.

Again, coaches are often burdened with responsibility and details so this is an area where parents can pitch in. Kids and sports are too dangerous a combo to ever be without a first-aid kit.

Before allowing your child to participate, make sure to get the green light from your physician. Your child may be advised to tape the injured area or wear a supportive ankle brace during games. Make sure to follow all recommendations to prevent re-injury.

9. Hydrate.

3. Insist on Proper Rest.

Time is often of the essence where sports injuries are concerned. Even if the injury appears only to be an ankle sprain, see a doctor to avoid future issues such as instability or arthritis. ■

This is especially critical during summer vacation when kids and parents alike tend to stay up too late. Proper sleep will aid in preparing your child for the match, help her concentrate (and avoid injury) on the field, and then recover.

4. Just Say No to Bare Feet For Sports.

Warm weather may be all about barefootin’ it, but sports is not! Uneven surfaces and getting kicked or stomped on spells bad news for little feet. Explain to your kids how it won’t be any fun to be stuck inside with an awkward cast or bandage because they were too busy to tie on shoes.

Hydration during both practices and games is critical, so go ahead and be the parent who always has an extra bottle – it’s too important.

10. Seek Immediate Treatment For Injuries.
