Math Lesson (Back to School) by Scott Tinkham
Howdy Wise County, I have been an entrepreneur all my life since I was 14 years old trapping muskrats and selling the furs. Now I don’t know about you but what happened this week in Washington has me confused. The U.S. Congress sets a federal budget every year in the trillions of dollars. Few people know how much money that is so we created a breakdown of federal spending in simple terms. Let’s put the 2011 federal budget into perspective: U.S. income: $2,170,000,000,000 Federal budget: $3,820,000,000,000 New debt: $1,650,000,000,000 National debt: $14,271,000,000,000 Recent budget cut: $38,500,000,000 (about 1 percent of the budget) It helps to think about these numbers in terms that we can relate to. Therefore, let’s remove eight zeros from these numbers and pretend this is the household budget for the fictitious Jones family living in Wise County Texas:
Total annual income for the Jones family: $21,700 Amount of money the Jones family spent: $38,200 Amount of new debt added to the credit card: $16,500 Outstanding balance on the credit card: $142,710 Amount cut from their budget: $385 I don’t know about you but it doesn’t matter if you’re a Republican, Democrat or independent you should be scratching your head. As for me and my house come November 2012 I am going to “throw the bums out” if they are an incumbent I’m voting for the “other guy”. A little over the top...
Dear Dave, We have two teenage daughters, ages 17 and 16, who are both in high school and work in the family business. We’ve done our best to teach them how to handle their money properly, including how to spend, save, and give. Also, they’ve both been saving for college. My husband thinks it would be a good idea to start charging them rent to prepare them for life once they leave home. What do you think? - Frances Dear Frances, I think you’re way ahead of most parents. Teaching them to handle money properly when they’re young is a great thing. It sounds like they’re both bright, hardworking young ladies, too. I appreciate your husband’s heart and the fact that he’s looking for teachable moments, but teenagers paying rent while they’re living at home is a little over the top. Now, if either of them were 26 or 27 it would be a different story. I’d have no problem charging them rent of about $10,000 a month! But seriously, at their ages it’s still your job as parents to provide housing for your children. That’s just the way it is. These girls already know how to work and have grasped the basic concepts of managing money. I meet 50-year-olds on a regular basis who still can’t do that. With this kind of start, I think these young women will be fine and stand a great chance of becoming wealthy one day. So, while I understand your husband’s idea, let’s tell the drill sergeant to back off a notch on this one. - Dave

Dear Dave, I’m in the process of building an eBay store. How likely is it that this will turn into a full-time business for me? - Anonymous Dear Anonymous, I think the likelihood of this becoming a full-time gig has more to with you and your business model than it does with eBay. If you’ve developed something really unique and coupled that with great pricing and service, then eBay’s a great distribution and marketing system to reach people you wouldn’t otherwise reach. Still, you have to remember that eBay’s not magic. The real magic is your brain, hard work, and whether or not your business model is a good one. If it is, then eBay becomes a cool methodology through which your idea gets to market. Regardless of how you’re executing on the internet, you still have to be executing the business properly. You still have to use basic marketing and have good margins, prices and service. The big thing is you still 8

have to love on your customers a lot. Plenty of people think the internet is an easy path to fame and fortune, and they forget about the basics of building and handling an operation well on a day-today basis. Those are the ones who don’t last long in the business world, whether it’s online or brick-and-mortar! —Dave
Are unemployment benefits immoral?
Dear Dave, I recently lost my job due to layoffs. I’m luckier than most, because I’m debt-free except for my house, and I have three months of expenses saved. I’ll also receive a severance package from my former employer, and my wife still has her job. I’m struggling with whether or not to file for unemployment compensation. Do you think it’s morally okay to do this? - Brent Dear Brent, I don’t have a problem, morally or otherwise, with accepting something I’ve already paid for. The Social Security system in this country is a complete and abysmal mathematical failure. It’s proof that socialism doesn’t work. But that doesn’t mean I’m not going to take my money out. The government took it from me in the first place! Now, if accepting unemployment benefits causes you to get the idea you can sit on your butt at home and not do anything, then I’d question your character. I’m not hearing that kind of mentality from you, though. You sound like a hardworking guy, and you two have obviously been pretty smart and responsible with your finances. Make sure you look at your severance package as “survival money.” You’ll know exactly how much you’ll get, so make a budget and make it stick. Cut all excess spending, and that means no more eating out, vacations, and all that stuff until you’re working again and everything’s back on solid ground. Then, you can ease back into saving and resuming a normal lifestyle. Right now really is the time for you guys to live like no one else! - Dave
How about pet insurance?
Dear Dave, What’s your take on having pet insurance while building wealth in order to avoid being sidetracked by pet-related emergencies? - Anonymous Dear Anonymous, We have three dogs in the Ramsey household, and my wife and I love those guys a lot. They’re almost like little hairy children to us both. However, we do not have pet insurance on any of them. You might be thinking that

we’ve got plenty of money and don’t have to worry about that kind of thing. But even if we weren’t financially blessed it’s just not something we would do. Instead, we’d figure a reasonable amount for pet care into our budget. Now, don’t misunderstand what I’m saying. Reasonable expenditures to fix a sick or injured pet are absolutely fine. It’s the kind of thing anyone with a heart should want to do for a pet. But ridiculous amounts of money spent on an animal—many times spent selfishly on the part of the human because they’re so emotionally attached to the animal—can be cruel, inhumane, and financially disastrous. I’m not going to be mad at you if you have $2 million sitting in the bank and you decide to spend $10,000 to keep your dog alive. But pet insurance? Really? I don’t think so.- Dave
Is it too late?
Dear Dave, I’m 42, and I haven’t started saving for retirement. I’m self-employed and not making a lot of money right now, plus I have about $8,000 in debt. It feels like I’m living paycheck to paycheck, and I just can’t seem to save or get anything paid off. Can you help? - Avis Dear Avis, It’s never too late to start saving for retirement. If you’re breathing, there’s still time! My guess is that it feels like you’re living paycheck to paycheck because you are living paycheck to paycheck. Let’s back up a little and take a look at this. You already know that you’ve got some stuff to clean up before you’ll be in a position of strength. Paying off the debt is a great idea, but how do you make that happen? If you’re not making much money, you may have to take on a part-time job while you grow your business. It might mean a career change or something as simple as putting in more hours and kicking that business in the tail to really get it running. A lot of your money is going out the door every month to pay those debts. But if your debt was paid off, you’d have money to invest for retirement. It’s a combination of an income problem and an outgo problem that’s standing in your way, Avis. Get the income up and stabilized, knock out the debt, and then you’ll create cash flow to save and fund retirement! - Dave ■

“That attraction thing works for everyone but me!”, “I’ve never really understood the attraction concept.”, “Attraction - what does that mean?” I know you have heard these and many other questions about “The Law of Attraction” and how to apply it to your life. Many of you have read the book, listened to the DVDs or watched Oprah. And yet, attraction is still not manifesting change in your life, your business or your future. There must be something missing. There must be a better understanding. The Attraction law works in every dimension of life. It is possible to increase your physical, mental and financial well-being by applying the principles presented below. Simply put, attraction (focus on a thing) draws it to you - as if to fill a void. Ever notice, after much consideration and time spent focusing on your choice for a new vehicle for the family that everywhere you look on the way home from the dealer, you see your same “unique” choice on the road. Almost as if you called it to you. For sake of space constraints, let’s focus on financial well-being. First, you must choose what you want and what you don’t want in your financial life. Most people have no concrete idea of the desires of their heart. Attraction requires intention. What is your concept of financial success? Intention must be clear and focused. You must be an actor in life, not a reactor to circumstance. This is the basis for goal setting and planning. Secondly, you must let go of limits. These mental limitations can stop attraction. You must also, based on your vision and intention, see yourself having reached your goal. This is more that visionary thinking. To quote a favorite professor, you must “Act as if ” you have reached your goal. Clear out the driveway for the coming vehicle, arrange your files for the increase in clients, get quotes for equipment to handle the increase in business. Finally, take inspired action and release expected results. Continue to move forward toward your goal but do not make it a ‘do or die’ mandate. Be observant of opportunities that are drawn to you. Take action. These are steps to your goal. It is not the results; rather, it is the journey. Take time to enjoy the process. Learn to dance while the music is playing. ■

olonel Absalom Bishop was born May 4, 1804, in Pendleton District, South Carolina. His wife was Mary Tippen, born in the same district on January 25, 1808, They had six children. Colonel Bishop entered the Siminole War in Florida in 1837, going in as Captain of the Militia, and it was probably due to promotions that he earned the title Colonel. He was active in the movement that enforced the removal of the Indians of Georiga to reservations. It is said that he and his [partneer, a Mr. Codding, invented the fountain pen, during the time he lived in New York. He came to Texas in 1852, first to Hopkins County where he had a sawmill. The Bishop family came to what would soon become Wise County, in 1855. During the Civil War Colonel Bishop had a business on the northwest corner of the square in Decatur, and had painted a large Confederate f lag across his store front, and it was a sad day for him when the country became filled with federal guards and officials and he had to paint out the Southern flag. Colonel Bishop is best known for his part in selecting the site for the town of Taylorsville, later to be changed to Decatur. More can be learned about this man in the “Pioneer History of Wise County.” ■

She married Robert Nolen Gregg, Jr., who had been a Prisoner of War for 3-1/2 year during which time he helped build the railroad that led to the Bridge over the River Kwai in Thailand. his summer is turning out to be expensive for a lot of people in Wise County. We have record heat driving up electric bills, sky high gas prices and kids needing school supplies. In response, people are starting to get really excited about saving money. So, this month I’m going to veer away from my usual topic and talk about the newest old way to save money: coupons. You may have seen pictures posted on Facebook of shopping trips with retail value versus what was actually paid. There is even a new show (which I’ll admit I’m addicted to) on TLC called Extreme Couponing. With all of the new businesses coming into Wise County there are a lot of deals to be had using coupons. The key to success is learning to stack coupons. Basically that means that you combine manufacturer coupons with store coupons and sales. Then, when you find a really good deal you buy enough to last you until the next time it’s on sale. It’s a little complicated at first but as you get a hang of it you can start saving 50 – 90% on your grocery bills. To make it easier, there are several websites that do the hard work of matching coupons to sales for you.

Oxytocin is one incredible substance. Love Potion Number 9 kinda stuff here. We feel its effects when we meet a new friend and feel that electric charge. You know that high you get after an extra fun girls’ night out? Yep, that’s oxytocin. The euphoria after spending time with your sweetie is oxytocin. While all these warm fuzzy feelings are great, never again will a woman’s oxytocin level be as high as it is after birth, especially an unmedicated one. All this oxytocin seals the deal with mom and baby’s bonding at birth.
What’s that smell?
Our babies are designed to want their mamas just moments after birth. Amniotic fluid-like smells come from mom’s breasts so that baby is drawn to the familiar smell, which brings on nursing. When baby isn’t wiped down too much at birth (especially his hands), he is reminded of the home-sweet-home smell coming from his hands, then smells it on mom’s breasts and can crawl up to mom to nuzzle and cuddle with her. You bet this impresses mom and dad and they bond with their baby who is so smart and alert! Babies can hear while still in the womb so they recognize mom and dad’s voices after birth. They will gaze into mom’s eyes when she holds him close. They are hard wired to seek out their mom and dad’s faces and get to

Here are some ways to help mom and baby bond at birth and reduce the risk of postpartum depression: • Seek to give birth without medications that short circuit the hormonal cocktail & make mom and baby groggy • Have baby go right to mom’s chest after birth, skin to skin • •
Talk to baby right away Delay routine procedures like weighing, administration of eye ointment, injections and so on until baby is no longer awake & alert-about two hours after birth

omputers sometimes just need a little time. Have you ever been working on a computer and it locks up? Frustrating I know, but take a moment, and it could save you many minutes of waiting. Your computer sometimes is installing a program in the background, f inishing a scan, saving a big f ile, indexing a database. All of these things can take a tick or two, and seem to take longer than normal. Sometimes giving it a few extra heart beats to finish and it starts going. Avoid doing what I call “Thrashing”. That is when a computer seems to freeze when you hit a key, so you hit it again... and again.. and again.. OOPS! The reason is that the keyboard has a small memory buffer that retains your keystrokes while it is busy. If you hit too many, or too many times the keyboard buffer gets full and the
computer beeps. So don’t thrash, but if you do, you need to reboot. Rebooting can be done several ways, most are safe, but one is definitely not. You can use what is call the three finger salute, CTL-ALT-DEL. This opens a menu that allows you to change settings, inspect program list for hung programs, or reboot. However if your keyboard buffer is full, that won’t work. Secondly, you can turn your computer off if it does not respond to keyboard commands. Push the reset button, if your computer has one. If it does not then push the power button. Often one quick push will not turn your computer off. Just hold the power button down for a few more heartbeats, or until it turns off. This is the better than the alternative that should never be done. Pulling the plug on a running computer isn’t recommended. You may
have done it, when no other choice remained. Sometimes it does nothing and the computer starts right up. This is not always the case sometimes the hard drive is a system file or reading a windows program file. Pulling the plug during this can corrupt your data or corrupt your windows program. ■

Public Friendly Dining
A
ugust temps are not the only thing that is hot! Once again the news and social media are fired up about some restaurants not allowing children under six to be served due to poor behavior. This has created a great deal of heated debate. Adults, who wish to enjoy a quiet and pleasant evening out, do not want to be held captive by unruly children. And, parents of small children would like to choose where they go as a family to enjoy a meal. We have all experienced times dining out where young children have been present that were out of control. They were a disruption to everyone - including the restaurant staff. Unfortunately, age does not guarantee good manners, but here are a few things to keep in mind when dining out with the family. The first thing to remember is that public dining is just that, ‘public’. You are no longer in the comfort of your own home and must be considerate of those around you. Unfortunately, there is a growing attitude of entitlement when it comes to public dining. Many boldly proclaim it is their right to eat where they like. The restaurant is being paid to cook, serve, clean, and meet every request with joy. Personal responsibility has been limited to paying the bill. Parents, exhausted from a long day at work, are looking for relief and support in feeding their children. After a busy day, they just want to unwind and have a moment of rest. Forgotten is the couple who may be seated next to them who has hired a babysitter and would also like an evening of relaxation. As one client told me, he looks forward to a nice romantic dinner with his wife and doesn’t want to be interrupted by a young screaming child demanding a soda. Many parents believe their child is well behaved and should not be punished for those who misbehave. If their child was to act out, they are quick to simply get up and leave. Public friendly dining requires parents properly prepare their child for what behavior is expected at a restaurant.
Age Appropriate
Start by selecting a restaurant that will be a pleasant experience for all family members. Be realistic. A two year old does not possess the maturity to manage their behavior during a leisurely evening meal in a five-star restaurant.
Type of Restaurant
Select a family friendly restaurant. There are many options in every community from which families can choose. • Will you be able to be seated quickly? • Is there proper seating such as high chairs or booster seats? • Is there a children’s menu? • Are there child friendly activities like crayons or a playground? 18

• Will you be able to place your order quickly? • Does the food require the use of knife and fork? • Will the food arrive quickly?
Appropriate Skills
What skills does your child need in order for the experience to be positive for all? Just like thinking about the clothing one will wear to a certain venue, thought should be given to how one will be expected to behave. • Chew with your mouth closed. • Use your napkin. • Say please and thank you. • Speak in a low voice. • Eat neatly. Practice and patience are essential to teaching children appropriate behavior. Start at home and then provide bite-sized opportunities in public for your child to practice his or her new skills.
Other Solutions
This topic stirs passion on both sides. Here are some solutions that my clients and friends have shared with me. • Restaurants should have ‘Family Friendly Dinner Hours’. • Restaurants could post a sign saying, “Well behaved children are a delight.” This would be similar to the ‘No Shoes, No Shirt, No Service’ sign. • Require children to pass a certified manners class where they are issued a card which parents present to restaurants. This card could be renewed annually and would be a measure of assurance to the restaurant that the child is able to handle themselves appropriately. It is my experience that a well-mannered child is welcome in most any environment. Good manners do begin at home. Around the family table manners and civility are mastered. s you contemplate having breast augmentation, it is important to first realize you are considering a major surgery.
