TAHA ANNOUNCES BOARD CHANGES The Texas Amateur Hockey Association announced a number of changes to the Board this week. Ted Skinner has stepped down as TAHA President, but will remain on the Board as Immediate Past President. Over the past five years as President, Ted provided great stability and leadership while presiding over membership growth, national recognition for local players and teams and major innovations such as guidelines for Tier I organizations, background screenings, match penalties and early adoption of USA Hockey’s ADM program. Changes in his work responsibilities no longer allow Ted the time to serve as President. With Skinner’s resignation, the Board selected TAHA VP Reggie Hall to fill the President’s position. Hall is a Coach with the Dallas Jr Stars organization and spent eight seasons with the Stars Midget Major Tier I team. He has been on the TAHA Board for just over a year and became VP last December. With the VP position vacated, the TAHA Board tapped former Travel Section President Mark Servaes to rejoin the Board following his relocation back to Houston. Servaes has been a valued member of the TAHA Board for the past four years and his

experience and knowledge will be invaluable to the Board and TAHA members. Additionally, Cesar Cepeda tendered his resignation as House Section President due to work and travel commitments. The Board unanimously voted TC Lewis to the position of House Section President. TC had previously served on the Board as Immediate Past President but gave up that position with Skinner’s resignation. As the Director of the Willowbrook Aerodrome rink in Houston Lewis brings a wealth of knowledge and experience on house league programs that the Board believes are the foundation of hockey membership growth within the Affiliate. All changes are effective immediately. Dallas to Host Induction The Texas Amateur Hockey Association is pleased to announce that the 40th annual U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame induction ceremony and dinner will take place in Dallas on October 15, 2012. This marks the first time in history the inductions will take place in Texas. The gala and ceremony will be held on the ice at the Plaza of the Americas rink in downtown Dallas. Tickets go on sale August 15th. The class will be formally installed into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame this fall in Dallas, Texas. To date, there are 153 enshrined members in the Hall, which was founded in 1973.

Off Ice Training Tips By Luke Beltrand

W

elcome back to another great season! I just wanted to go over a few tips for getting back into mid season form this time of the year. Hopefully you had a stellar off season training program leading up to the season (I know all of my players did and saw incredible result!). If so then you are most likely going to need to move on to more of a “Maintenance” phase. This means that in regards to lifting weights we want to focus more on maintaining the strength we have already achieved so that we do not lose said gains. Lifting programs should also emphasize muscular balance, core strength, and injury prevention. The number one goal of off ice is not only to make sure a team is strong, fast and in incredible condition but also to minimize injuries. All training programs should be designed with this in mind. There are many training techniques out there today being used that are not only subpar training regiments but use exercises that actually increase risk of injury. Let’s say you were not able to do much working out over the summer and you are pretty

out of shape. You may want to focus on a more results oriented program so you can maximize on gains early in the season. Once again this should never come at the expense of risking injury but you may want to afford a decrease in performance now (due to soreness) to allow for a much more athletic and finely tuned hockey player later! Another focal point would be explosive speed and anaerobic conditioning (discussed in a previous article). This is where we develop our hockey specific conditioning of a 1:2 or eventually 1:1 work to rest ratio. Make sure movements are hockey specific, increase stride length and stride power. We also want to work on foot speed as the development of Power + Quickness = Speed. If you have any questions on training techniques or want to see some of the stellar results we are getting for our hockey players please feel free to email me at lbeltrand@crullfitness.com. ■

Texas Tornado By Corey Hersch

obertson Cup title, beginning September 12th against the Michigan Warriors at the Combat Hockey/NAHL Showcase in Blaine, Minn. Before they get there, however, head coach and general manager Tony Curtale will get a few more looks at his roster, including Saturday’s Black & Gold game at the Ice at Stonebriar at 4:00 p.m. “Our vets look fantastic to go along with a lot of really quality rookies we have in camp this year,” Curtale said. “My staff and I have a few tough decisions to make, which should make the Black & Gold game that much more competitive.” With 10 players from last year’s team aging out of the league and two others moving on to play Major Juniors in Canada, there are holes to fill from last year’s team. It’s never easy to do, but Curtale feels he has the right guys to do just that. Two of those players returning from last year’s team are Metroplex natives, Justin Greenberg and Hunter Leisner. Greenberg scored the game-winning goal in overtime of the Robertson Cup final, while Leisner, the team’s starting goaltender, was acquired in a midseason trade last year and helped lead the Tornado to its fifth NAHL title. “Winning the Robertson Cup will definitely help him this season,” Curtale said of Leisner, who took part in Dallas Stars Development Camp this summer. “He put his game together at the right time last year and we’re hoping he carries that momentum into this season.” “We’re grading guys every day,” he added. “And we really feel this is the most talented group of guys we’ve had in seven or eight years.” That’s high praise from a coach whose team, eight years ago in 2004, began a run of three straight Robertson Cups. The Tornado had previously won the NAHL title in 2001--the team’s second season-- and after reeling off three in a row from 2004-2006, added another Robertson Cup last season. But young talent up front provided by players like Chase Matson, Leo Lumm, and Scott Conway has Curtale excited about what this season will bring. Matson, a ’94 forward out of Livonia, Mich. with a physical game, is a product of the Compuware hockey program, where he picked up 9 points and 18 PIMs in 25 games last season playing for the 18U team. He was taken in the second round of the 2012 NAHL Entry Draft, but with the Tornado’s first pick, at 45th overall. Lumm signed a tender from the Tornado before the draft, meaning the team held his NAHL rights exclusively. He was teammates with Matson on last year’s

Compuware 18U team, where the ’95 forward from netted 13 goals in 26 games and also picked up 46 PIMs. Conway is another ’95 forward, skating last season for Victory Honda and scoring 20 goals and 18 assists. He also hails from the United Kingdom, and just like former Tornado captain and franchise-leader in points Jack Prince, played his midget hockey in Michigan before beginning his Junior career with the Tornado. “We like what we have coming in on D, too,” Curtale said. “Nick Blase and and Mitchell Mueller are big and physical and really good defensively. Anthony Mousseau and Ryan Tinsley have a lot of talent offensively, as well.” All four defensemen were born in 1994, giving them three years of junior hockey eligibility. Blase was selected in the third round of the 2012 NAHL Entry Draft, Mueller was taken in the 10th round, while Mousseau and Tinsley were given tenders for the upcoming season. The Tornado will play their first four regular season games at the Combat Hockey/NAHL Showcase in Blaine, Minn. beginning September 12th. They will then return home for their home opener, scheduled for September 29th at Dr Pepper Arena in Frisco. Opening faceoff is at 7:30 p.m.. ■

2012-2013 Season for the Area’s NHL Prospects ByTanner Wilson

ith the 2012-2013 Season getting ready to start in the next few weeks (According to the league/level of cours) to get the schedules and some notes to at least get started to start following for these guys as they looking to possibly get their chance to make their NHL Debut this season, or at least continue to move up the team’s prospect rankings if they haven’t signed and if they lucky enough. Possibly a chance to sign their NHL Entry Level Contract this season. Right now, they are 7 players that have been taken in the NHL Draft since 2007 where we have at least 1 player taken in every draft since 2007 (3 was the high water mark in 2011 while they were none in 2010). 4 of them have been signed to Entry Level Contracts as Matt Donovan, Chris Brown, Stefan Noesen & Austin Smith are looking to get their chance of a life time to make their NHL Debut. While 3 others in Colin Jacobs, Blake Coleman & Colton Hargrove are looking to continue to impress and move up the prospect ranks for their team this season.

IceTimesMagazine the Americans Won Gold and was taken in the 2nd Round of the NHL Draft. At the time he was the highest drafted player to ever come out of the Southwestern Part of the Country. 2010-2011: Played in World Junior Championships where the Americans won Bronze in Buffalo, N.Y. & in the NCAA National Championship Game where the Wolverines lost in OT to the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs. Also played in the Big Chill in the Big House Game in front of a World Record Crowd of just under 110,000 fans. It broke the record for the most fans at a single hockey game. Brown is also the only player from the Southwest to ever win Medals at both the IIHF U18 & U20 World Championships 2011-2012: Signed his NHL Entry Level Contract with the Phoenix Coyotes

Stefan Noesen (Plano, Texas/Ottawa Prospect)

Stefan’s Profile: www.ontariohockeyleague.com/roster/show/id/1459 2011-2012 Team: Plymouth Whalers (OHL) 2011-2012 Season: After he finished the season with the Whalers as the team’s leading scorer for the 2nd straight year & in the playoffs where he scored 15 points in only 7 games where he was injured for nearly the entire 2nd round of the playoffs. Many in the Ottawa Senators Org. are saying that was he was one of the team’s biggest surprise in the Draft and felt that he was overlooked despite being the states first ever 1st Round draft pick in our history. Many comments have been made about his ability to improve his skating, work ethic and strength. Even if he does have to go back to Plymouth, because of a very strong prospect pool that is emerging in Ottawa right now with the likes of Mika Zibanejad, Matt Pumpel & Jackob Silverberg right now. Having to battle with all these strong prospects will only continue to make him work harder reguardless of where he ends up. Because of the current Canadian Hockey League Egilibity Rules, he only can go to either the Plymouth Whalers this season or to the Senators if he makes it, so he wouldn’t be allowed to go to the American Hockey League, even if the Senators felt he would be ready to make that jump from the Major Junior to the American Hockey League Level. 2012-2013 Season Ahead: Because of a possible NHL Lockout Pending, they could be a chance that he may have to return to the Plymouth Whalers where he would be part of a very strong team that some think could be a serious contender to win the OHL Western Conference and things go well, could be looking to play deep into May for the OHL & Memorial Cup Championship Event that will take place in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan this season. He also will be looking to be a serious contender for the 2013 IIHF U20 World Championship Roster for this year’s event in Ufa, Russia. Major Career Achomplishment’s 2009-2010: Made his OHL Debut with the Whalers where he only played in half a season with the Whalers in his Debut Season. 2010-2011: Lead the Whalers in Scoring with 77 points (33G 44A) and was taken in the 1st Round (21st Overall) in the 2011 Draft 2011: Was invited to the USA Hockey WJC Player Development Camp 2011-2012: Continued to take over for the Plymouth Whalers as he 888-878-8465

lead the Whalers in Scoring. He also had 2 5 point games during the 1st Round Series against the Guelph Storm. 2012: Once again he was invited to the USA Hockey WJC Player Development Camp.

Austin Smith (Coppell, Texas/Dallas Prospect)

Austin’s Profile: http://theahl.com/stats/player.php?id=4464 2011-2012 Team: Colgate Univ. (ECAC Hockey)/Texas Stars (AHL) 2011-2012 Season: Austin entered the 2011-2012 Season among the healthiest he has ever had in his Career after a 2010-2011 season that was effected by a hip injury that he fought through and effected his development that year. He came out of the gate flying where he averaged nearly a goal a game with 36 goals in 38 games and added 21 assists to have 57 points which was good for 3rd in the entire country. He won both the NCAA Hockey Goal Scoring & ECAC Hockey Conference Player of the Year Titles as well as being named to the Final 3 for the Hobey Baker Trophy before losing to Jack Connolly of the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs. He had some explosive nights during the season as he had more multi goal games (7) then being held off the score sheet completely (5) last year including a 4 goal game against RPI back on February 4th. During the post-season, he was looking to find a way to help the Colgate Raiders reach the NCAA Tournament. Probably the one major thing he couldn’t do in his NCAA Career as his Colgate Raiders Team was never able to qualify for the NCAA Tournament in his 4 year career. After defeating Quinnipiac in 3 games during the ECAC Hockey Conference Quarterfinals. They were buried by a pair of Union College Goals just 4 minutes apart in the 3rd period by Daniel Carr & Jeremy Welsh to put their Conference Championship & NCAA Tournament Hopes on ice. After the Raiders ended their season back in March, he signed his NHL Entry Level Deal with the Stars as he was able to play in the final 12 games of the AHL Season where he was able to register 3 assists, average 2 shots on goal per game and had several close calls with scoring attempts. With no playoff hopes on the line for the Texas Stars, it was a time to see an improving prospects pool for the Dallas Stars make their Pro Debuts along with fellow Dallas Prospects like Jack Campbell & Reilly Smith as well as he got to to play with. 2012-2013 Season Ahead: As he goes into his full full pro season, he will need to prove to the Dallas Stars that he can be a constant scoring threat on the ice before he can get his chance to make his NHL Debut. Major Career Accomplishment’s 2007: Taken in the 5th Round (128th Overall) of the Draft as he became the first player since the Stars moved from Dallas to be taken in the Draft. 2007-2008: Played his first and only Junior Season with the Penticton Vees (BCHL) where he lead the team in goal scoring and was huge in the Playoffs to win the 2008 BCHL Championship. 2012: Won the NCAA Hockey Goal Scoring & ECAC Hockey Conference Player of the Year Titles. He was also in the Final 3 for the Hobey Baker Trophy & signed his NHL Entry Level Contract. Keep your kids out of hot water – put them on ice! 17

BEHIND THE BENCH By Mark Dyslin

A

few years back I was watching Detroit practice at a local rink when Chris Chelios caught my eye. He was about 43 at the time, just a few years younger than your humble servant. I remember saying to my buddy how some of these guys can’t seem to let go of the game. How they should know when to call it quits before they embarrass themselves, clinging to the game like a dog on a steakbone. My friend (yes I have one) was quick to point out something I didn’t think of: leaving hockey means they have to grow up. Don’t take that comment at face value, like I did. The more we talked the more I realized it was actually a very astute observation. These players are (mostly) very responsible citizens. Some have families, mortgages/rent, and other things that you and I do to eke out a living. The major difference is their job is a game. It’s play time. Yeah, they have to perform, but it is still recreation. After 20 or so years in the league, the prospect of having to get a “real” job has to weigh heavily on these guys. They have to enter the world of grown ups. Schlepping to an office/mill/warehouse/classroom day in and day out and doing those things their moms and dads did. From performing in front of thousands of adulating fanatics to creating a report on the impact of changing office supply vendors to save 23% on paperclip expenses. Who can blame them? I started reminiscing about all this because I am at that same point in my little corner of the hockey world. I have been coaching youth sports since 1996, hockey since 2000. I have coached both my boys from Mites through High School. Most years I coached the regular season as well as parts of summer sessions. I gave private lessons, ran clinics, organized field trips to NHL games, and spent a lot of time promoting youth hockey. For three years I worked for your Dallas Stars in one of the local rinks. I have spent countless high quality hours in all things hockey. Utopia, brutha. Now retirement from youth hockey is reaching out for my throat with its icy claws, slowly choking the essence of happiness from my soul. What? A little over the top?

I find myself just as anxious as the Chelios’s of the world. I already have that boring, run-in-themill job, so I am not all angst ridden over that. Been digging in that salt mine for a millennia (well, more like 30 years but feels as long as a Mayan calendar). But over the last 16 years I had hockey to mix things up. It was my elixir. My glazed donut and Mountain Dew®. My generoso caramel ginseng espresso macchiato with a 5-hour Energy® chaser. Being a youth hockey coach was pure enjoyment: I helped kids learn to play a game and laugh. And you know how powerful children’s laughter can be. If more world matters were negotiated in a kindergarten play room, wars would be rendered obsolete. I’ve watched 6-year old boys try to scratch the paint off the blue line. I’ve seen a 9-year girl change from a wallflower to one of the most admired kids on the bench. I’ve talked a room full of 11-year olds “off the ledge” minutes before their first Pee-Wee game (when checking was introduced at that level). I’ve listened to a 14-year old boy share his fears as his mother battled cancer (and eventually beat it!) . I’ve witnessed a gaggle of 18-year olds go through the trials of getting into college. Nothing lasts forever. I knew this day would come like a mudslide; burying me under a tsunami of goop, suffocating my spirit, extinguishing the Kafkanian life-flames as...too much again? Well, damnit, it feels that way. I didn’t think it would be this bad. I know time is nature’s salve and I’ll get over this some day. But today it sure doesn’t seem possible. To all of you who I’ve had the distinct privilege of meeting at the rinks, thank you! To all the parents who allowed me to take a few hours a week of their children’s time from them, thank you! To Ice Times magazine, thank you for letting me burp-up my thoughts in the public domain. To my family, thank you for always letting me do what I love for as long as I did (and with minimal complaints!). I feel obligated to close with something corny. Let’s try this: keep your laces tight and your sticks on the ice. Buh bye! ■
