TAHA ANNOUNCES BOARD CHANGES The Texas Amateur Hockey Association announced a number of changes to the Board this week. Ted Skinner has stepped down as TAHA President, but will remain on the Board as Immediate Past President. Over the past five years as President, Ted provided great stability and leadership while presiding over membership growth, national recognition for local players and teams and major innovations such as guidelines for Tier I organizations, background screenings, match penalties and early adoption of USA Hockey’s ADM program. Changes in his work responsibilities no longer allow Ted the time to serve as President. With Skinner’s resignation, the Board selected TAHA VP Reggie Hall to fill the President’s position. Hall is a Coach with the Dallas Jr Stars organization and spent eight seasons with the Stars Midget Major Tier I team. He has been on the TAHA Board for just over a year and became VP last December. With the VP position vacated, the TAHA Board tapped former Travel Section President Mark Servaes to rejoin the Board following his relocation back to Houston. Servaes has been a valued member of the TAHA Board for the past four years and his

experience and knowledge will be invaluable to the Board and TAHA members. Additionally, Cesar Cepeda tendered his resignation as House Section President due to work and travel commitments. The Board unanimously voted TC Lewis to the position of House Section President. TC had previously served on the Board as Immediate Past President but gave up that position with Skinner’s resignation. As the Director of the Willowbrook Aerodrome rink in Houston Lewis brings a wealth of knowledge and experience on house league programs that the Board believes are the foundation of hockey membership growth within the Affiliate. All changes are effective immediately. Dallas to Host Induction The Texas Amateur Hockey Association is pleased to announce that the 40th annual U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame induction ceremony and dinner will take place in Dallas on October 15, 2012. This marks the first time in history the inductions will take place in Texas. The gala and ceremony will be held on the ice at the Plaza of the Americas rink in downtown Dallas. Tickets go on sale August 15th. The class will be formally installed into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame this fall in Dallas, Texas. To date, there are 153 enshrined members in the Hall, which was founded in 1973.

Dallas Oilers Hang Championship Banners and Award Championship Rings to Players By Julie Hirschy

I

t was a hot afternoon in late May when we gathered at ITC. The ice had been replaced by turf, a subtle reminder that off-season was upon us. Graduations and summer vacations were just around the corner; hockey was the last thing on many peoples’ minds. But for a hockey player…or coach…or parent, hockey is seldom far from their mind. The Dallas Oilers U18 AA Team was still thinking about hockey and still celebrating it’s recent National Championship victory. Players, Coaches, and families gathered together one last time to unveil banners and award State Championship rings to the

Players. Oilers Hockey Director Kevin “Smitty” Smith, and Coaches Mark Campbell and Brian Duly all reflected on the season - it’s highlights and even it’s low moments – in speeches that were filled with emotion, pride, humor, and gratitude. The NTXHL Championship and State Championship banners were unveiled. Players were called up one by one to receive their State Rings. When the time came to present the last banner, Players and Coaches all gathered at center ice. Together, as a Team - the same way they won the National Championship banner – they unveiled it. ■

Growing Girls Hockey O

ver the past 5 years Coach Hullum has been working very hard to promote girls hockey here in North Texas. Coach Hullum started with 4 girls playing together on a boy’s Squirt Recreational team and 5 years later the Wolves have an all-girls 12 and Under recreational team as well as a developmental program for all girls. This summer is the 4th all-girls team coached by Coach Hullum and this coming 2012-2013 Fall/Winter season the Lady Wolves will have an all-girls mite recreational team, 12 and Under recreational team, Coed PW recreational team for 12 years and older girls and an all-girls 12 and Under select/travel team. The success of growing girl’s hockey within the Wolves program is the creative and original thinking to introduce hockey to girls. The Wolves have implemented many programs to help spread the word about girl’s hockey, help make hockey available to all girls, and bring awareness of the opportunities girls have with hockey. When coach Hullum started most girls and parents assumed hockey was for boys so he started to educate parents and the girls program took off. The Lone Star Lady Wolves current programs include: 7th All Girls Learn to Play Hockey Clinic starting June 18th, Recycle the game, Free all-girl Skates, All Girls kids first programs, and most recently the 12U girls summer recreational team had its first “invite a friend to practice night”.

8 Keep your kids out of hot water – put them on ice!

The Lady Wolves 1st invite a friend to practice night was very successful. The Lady Wolves had a great turnout with 29 girls on the ice either experiencing hockey for the first time or improving their skills with the Wolves coaching staff. The Lone Star Lady Wolves had 13 girls from the invite a friend to practice night sign up for the 7th all-girls learn to play hockey clinic. The Lone Star Wolves have three (3) events scheduled right now for girls in 2012 with many more events coming. Scheduled Events: • 7th All Girls Learn to Play Hockey Clinic – 8 sessions - Starts June 18 • Bring a friend to practice and Hot Dog Party – August 6th • 2012 Girls Ice Hockey Weekend – Oct 13 and 14 For more details about opportunities for girls to play hockey please visit www.lonestarwolves.com or contact Coach Hullum Coach Scott Hullum scotthullum@technisource.com 817-296-4698 ■

Tornado announce full 2012-2013 schedule The Tornado will play 28 home, 28 road, and four neutral-site games this season By Corey Hersch

S

ome of the players may be different, but the goal remains the same. The Texas Tornado won their fifth Robertson Cup in May, their fourth National Championship since the franchise was founded in 1999. They’ll begin the defense of that title with four games at the Combat Hockey/NAHL Showcase Tournament in Blaine, Minn., from September 12-15. Texas has games scheduled against Michigan, Fresno, Janesville, and Coulee Region, the only four times they’ll play outside the South Division in 2012-2013. The home opener is scheduled for September 29th against the Wichita Falls Wildcats. Last season, Texas posted a 5-2-1 record over the Wildcats. On February 2nd, the Tornado scored three power-play goals against Wichita Falls en route to a 6-0 victory. Former Tornado captain Jack Prince picked up a hat trick in the game, as well. The Tornado will match up against the Wildcats eight times in 2012-2013, including a pair of Sunday games in October. If they weren’t already, the Tornado are going to become awfully familiar with the Amarillo Bulls by the end of the year. With 13 games between the two teams, this heated rivalry will only intensify as the season goes along. Tornado fans can ring in 2013 watching Texas and Amarillo play, with a three-game weekend series scheduled for January 4th-6th at Dr Pepper Arena. The two teams will also close out the season with games on March 30 and 31. In 2011-2012, Amarillo and Texas split eight games, with the Tornado coming away with a 3-3-2 record against the Bulls in the regular season. Two of those wins came in early March, when the Tornado went into Amarillo Civic Center and took four points with them as they left, with a 5-2 win on Friday and a 2-0 victory on Saturday. The Topeka Roadrunners finished with 80 points last season, the same amount as the Tornado. They were evenly matched in head-to-head play, as well, with Texas finishing with a 3-2-1 record against the Roadrunners in the regular season. On March 2nd, Hunter Leisner made 23 saves in a 2-0 shutout win on the road at Landon Arena. Topeka got the better of Texas in the playoffs, however, sweeping the

Tornado in a best-of-five divisional playoff series before being eliminated by Amarillo. This season, the Tornado will play Topeka 12 times, including home games on both October 11th and 13th. The Odessa Jackalopes had previously been members of the CHL, but played the Tornado seven times during their inaugural NAHL campaign in 2011-2012. After posting a 4-2-1 record against the Jacks, Texas would love to continue their winning ways during the teams’ 11 meetings this season. Last season’s games against Odessa were highlighted by a four-goal performance by Prince on December 30th, one of two games in which he scored four times. Texas went on to win that game by a final score of 9-1. The Tornado play host to Odessa on November 2nd and 3rd, and will head to Ector County Coliseum for three more games against the Jackalopes before the calendar flips to December. After one exhibition game and 12 regular season contests between Texas and the Corpus Christi IceRays in 2011-2012, it was clear that the two teams were getting a little sick of seeing each other. Games against the IceRays were always physical, and there’s no indication that will change this season. The Tornado went 6-51 against Corpus Christi last season and when they struggled, IceRays goaltender Anthony Stolarz usually had something to do with it. He was not in net for the Tornado’s 6-5 overtime win on December 11th, for example, but played twice in January against the Tornado, allowing just one goal in each game. Texas will likely be happy to see Stolarz leave; the New Jersey-native was drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers in the second round of the NHL Entry Draft and has committed to play his college hockey at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. It’s sure to be an exciting season of Tornado hockey, one which we hope you’ll be a part of. Individual game tickets go on sale on Tuesday, September 4th, but fans can purchase season tickets or inquire about group packages today by calling 972-335-9800. ■

Allen Community Ice Rink Expands Offerings as Hockey Popularity Surges

W

hile a study by the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association (SGMA) shows the popularity of hockey has declined nationally, the sport has bucked the trend by gaining popularity in North Texas. In fact, while the sport is often thought of as a favorite in colder climates, there are actually more professional hockey teams in Texas than any other state. Just in North Texas, you have the Dallas Stars, Texas Brahmas, Texas Tornados and the Allen Americans. For hockey and other ice sports to continue their positive momentum in Texas, it is critical that there are places where people can learn the fundamentals of skating and develop the skills needed to enjoy recreational skating, hockey and/or figure skating. Fortunately, the Allen Community Ice Rink (ACIR), located within Allen Event Center, offers these opportunities. With a full-size, state-of-the-art ice surface measuring 85’ by 200’ and a general seating capacity for more than 300 spectators, the facility offers everything skating and hockey enthusiasts might want. Amenities include locker rooms, equipment shop, meeting rooms, off-ice training areas and skate rental. ACIR is a member of the Texas Amateur Hockey Association, a USA Hockey affiliate, and is operated by the City of Allen’s Parks and Recreation Department. When it comes to learning the fundamentals of skating at ACIR, the Allen Skating Academy delivers quality personalized instruction for any and all types of skating. Those who want to learn or play the game of hockey can take advantage of grassroots hockey programs for both youth and adults and males and females. The ACIR also offers a full compliment figure skating programs, working with beginner to advanced skaters, and even hosts a synchronized skating team, the Allen Revolution. Many of the ACIR based skaters will compete in the ISI World Championships in July. For youth players, ACIR has fully implemented the American Development Model with age-appropriate learning that provides

players an environment in which they can reach their full potential and, most importantly, have fun. The Jr. Americans recreational hockey program features instruction by an ACIR Ice Hockey Instructor (not a volunteer parent) and offers Mite, Squirt and Pee Wee age divisions open to both girls and boys. With professionals from the Allen Americans lending a hand, it is a very unique program, and one that is without equal in the area. In addition to the Jr. Americans program, youth options include First Strides Learn to Play, Battle Camp, Mini Biscuits Mite 6 & Under Program and the Summer Skills Program. Beginner Hockey Skating and Advanced Hockey Skating are also offered through Allen Academy of Skating. For adults, the Allen Adult Hockey League (AAHL) is entering its fourth season and boasts participation from more than 200 adults. Adult options include American Made Learn to Play, Adult Intermediate Skills Program, Battle Camp, Summer Skills Program, AAHL I and AAHL D. Overall, program offerings have grown drastically in the past year having offered Pinktoberfest, a women’s tournament benefiting the Breast Cancer at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Allen and the Mid-Summer Meltdown, an adult tournament. ACIR hosted a Learn to Play Sled Hockey clinic in December and held Try Hockey for Free Days in November and February as well as participating in Hockey Weekend Across America in February. Additionally, a Girls Learn to Play clinic was held over Spring Break. With a commitment to quality, affordable programming and growing the game of hockey and teaching skating at all levels, if you haven’t gotten on the Allen Community Ice Rink Ice, the time to lace up your skates is now. Visit AllenParks.org for more information, call 972.912.1097 or visit in person at 200 E. Stacy Road in Allen. ■

Cosmo’s Tip of the Month Are You Doing Your Homework? By Cosmo Clarke

W

hile the hockey season is in progress, the majority of time is spent on team systems such as breakouts, offensive attacks, or positioning. Players have to take upon themselves to improve their own personal skills. How many scoring chances do you receive or create in a game? Practicing away from the rink on a regular basis will increase your chances of scoring when the time comes. Suggestions: A. Place pucks in a triangle or square or any other random pattern and work on your reach and “soft hands”. Develop a soft feel for the puck/ball using controlled wrist and arm motions. B. Hang durable plastic bottles from a hockey net and practice hitting the targets from

different angles both on the forehand and backhand. Change your foot position to face directly, stand side-on, and stand 45 degrees to target. If you are a left hand shooter, shoot off the left as well (opposite for right-handers). Learn to look at and focus on hitting your target; never settle for just getting close. Have contests with your friends and family or keep track of your accuracy percentage. Types of shots: a. wrist shots b. snap shots c. slap shots d. back hand shots e. flip shots ■

BEHIND THE BENCH By Mark Dyslin

W

aaahooo! The 2012-2013 season is nearly here! So besides shopping for a sparkly new whistle, you should be planning the initial team meeting, right? Of course right. This is the time to set the tone for the entire year. Before the gnashing of teeth. Before the furtive looks. Before the epic meltdowns over perceived slights in ice time. Before the advice giving phone calls on how to “strategize” (“Coach, I know they’re mites; but running an umbrella formation power play will give ‘em a huge advantage!). While I do not have enough space to detail an entire team meeting, I’ll toss out a few morsels for you to masticate. Consider an agenda somewhere along these lines: - Introduction (why you coach) - Coaching philosophy - Goals for the season - Equipment needs (depends on level) - Season schedule (practices, games, tournaments/travel) - Coach, player, and parent expectations Some keystroking on expectations. This is your time to establish alpha dog status; but please, be the house broken and caring top mutt. Nothing says BMOC like having the players and parents sign a code of conduct. It’s ever so easy to defend: explain that everyone needs to be on the same page now to make sure the players have a great experience. The players. It may be uncomfortable today, but this document(s) will come in handy down the road. A coach’s code of conduct should include things like: how you’ll balance fun with a strong work ethic; game management (high-brow phrase for winning and losing); being a positive

role model; how disciplinary matters will be handled; and goals for the season. If this is a developmental team let everyone know up front what winning means to the team. Have the kids sign a “Player’s Bill of Rights & Responsibilities.” This includes the player’s rights to have you: be consistent and equal in praise and discipline; always available to talk; and committed to develop players as individuals and as part of the team. Player responsibilities: understand the work ethic and commit to it all season long; be on time for practices and games; adhere to the team code of sportsmanship; and have fun! Now for mumsy and poopsy. The Parent Paradigm: adhere to the team code of sportsmanship; obey the 24 hour call rule; learn the game; respect team practice and game objectives; don’t car/sofa/table/picnic bench coach; and have fun! Oh, and for jerk wagons who lawyer up and refuse to sign, work with the association to delay the child’s participation until said knucklehead sees the light. Let this be the first time you talk about this stuff, not the last. Verbal and written reminders a couple more times during the year will nestle these concepts snugly upon the frontal lobes like a pair of well worn fuzzy slippers. Will this absolutely prevent problems from cropping up? Oh, heck no. Then again, we don’t live in an absolute world. But, it’ll make most think twice before twisting off at will. By the way, I love parents (I myself am one). I love that they invest their money and time in junior/juniorette’s pursuit of hockey. I just detest Mommy/Daddy-zilla; there’s no place for them. ■
