W
e have made it to the July issue of Wise Family Magazine. It has been a challenge since Kim’s passing getting it to her standards, but I think Kim would be proud of this issue. Sara, our graphic artist has done an incredible job and it has been a pleasure working and getting to know her over the past few months. I think this months cover is one of the best we have had over the years. Another cool thing is the fact that Kim’s nephew Taylor has been learning the family business. He has been out and about in Wise County selling ads for the magazine and representing Wise Family at events and meetings. He’s doing a great job and I’m sure Kim is smiling down on him. Thank you for reading Wise Family and hanging in there with us through the past few issues and the past 7 years. Not a day goes by that I don’t think about Kim and I can’t tell you the feeling I get in my heart when I’m at Starbucks and I see someone reading Wise Family, it means Kim is still with us in Wise County at her Starbucks office. Getting back to this issue, the other day I heard myself complaining about the heat so I asked Sara to look for some old pictures that our readers sent in last winter check out page 22, it will make the July day seem ten degrees cooler. Becoming the Good Agent
Dear Dave, I recently graduated from college, and I think I’d like to get into the real estate business as an agent. I don’t have much real world experience, so what can I do to learn and become a great real estate agent? - Ryan Dear Ryan, Congratulations on finishing college! It sounds like you’re ready to hit the ground running. I think the first thing anyone in your situation should do right now is get a first-hand look at the day-to-day life of a really good real estate agent. Find out what someone who sells 100 houses a year does on a daily basis, how they got to where they are, and how long it took them to get to that level in terms of skills, referrals, knowledge, and recognition in the marketplace. You might consider driving to a nearby city—one that’s far enough away so that competition won’t be a factor—and finding a superstar agent. Tell them your situation, and ask if you could ride around with them for a day or two and pick their brain. Basically, I’m talking about interviewing them and finding out how you can be them when you grow up. Believe me, you’ll learn tons about the technology and marketing sides of things, too. Real estate is probably the perfect example of The Pareto Principle. It states that 80 percent of the people make 20 percent of the money, and 20 percent of the people make 80 percent of the money. Learning as much as you can as quickly as you can is a great first step to making sure that you’re in that top 20 percent! - Dave
Finding Life Balance
Dear Dave, I own a small company, and lots of times I feel like I’m devoting too much time to the business and not spending enough time with my family day to day. How do you find a balance between home and work? - Pat Dear Pat, You know, I get asked this question a lot. Truth be told, the idea of everything being in balance on a daily basis is a myth. No one can perfectly juggle all that life has to offer—the spiritual, emotional, financial, home, work, and physical—every single day. It’s just not possible. Still, you need to make sure you strive for balance over the scope of time. I started running a few years ago, and I’m out of balance if I’m training for a marathon, because I spend more time training. The same is true with work. There are times when you have to work hard, and occasionally this can bleed over into other things. I think the answer 8

lies in really being into whatever you’re doing. Listen and participate in conversations with your kids instead of watching television. Take your spouse out on dates, and turn off the cell phone. When you’re with your family you should really be with them. Then, when you have to work, chances are they won’t be mad at you. Honestly, we waste so much time and then we complain that we’re out of balance. Ebb and flow takes place in every aspect of our lives. So, I think we should all stop wasting the time we have! —Dave
Jumpstart Your Plan!
Dear Dave, I’m 26, single, and I’ve been working your Total Money Makeover plan to pay off my debt. Right now, I have just $25,000 left to pay off, including my car. Recently, I was offered a chance to move to Singapore for the next six months as part of my job. I won’t have any real expenses while I’m there, but I’m worried about the effect it might have on me getting out of debt. How can I make all of this balance out? - Jared Dear Jared, Why does there have to be a balance here? In my mind, this whole situation is a fantastic catalyst for helping you get out of debt even faster than before. Think about it. You’re single, and you’ve got no strings attached. This is a wonderful opportunity to travel and make more money and save more money than ever before! You’ll be able to accelerate your financial plan and have a great cultural experience, too! Now, I’m not up for this idea if you’re going over there just to hang out and goof off. But if you’re committed to the plan and to getting out of debt, then this is something you absolutely must do. You could even go ahead and sell the car now. You’ll be rid of insurance payments, buying tags, and all that stuff. Plus, it’ll just sit there losing value while you’re gone, anyway. I’m not hearing anything negative in this entire situation. Go for it, Jared! - Dave
No Writing, No Money!
Dear Dave, I called a creditor recently to settle an old debt. They offered a settlement, but said it was their policy not to put settlement offers in writing. Should I accept the deal? - Joseph Dear Joseph, No way! If you don’t have anything in writing, then you have no proof that they extended the offer or agreed to a specific amount. The only one who will have “proof ” of anything in this scenario is the creditor, and that’s just asking for trouble.

My suggestion for handling this ridiculous situation goes something like this. Explain to them that you seem to have reached an impasse, because you have a policy of never accepting settlements and handing out money unless the settlements are in writing. No writing, no money! It’s not a hard concept to understand, and it’s fair to both parties. - Dave
Planning For Retirement
Dear Dave, I’d like to move to Las Vegas when I retire in about 10 years. I’ve saved up quite a bit of money, and could pay cash for a property now. Should I go ahead and buy, and maybe rent it out for a while, or wait until I actually retire? - Bruce Dear Bruce, If you can pay cash now and still have plenty of savings left over, then there’s no reason not to go ahead and buy. The housing bubble has burst out there, and you’ll be able to find some real bargains in and around Vegas. I’m not big on being a long-distance landlord, but I’d be tempted to do it in a situation like this. Keep in mind that you’ll probably have to renovate the place if you rent it out for several years. It’s just the nature of things in the rental world, so make sure you figure that into your cash plan—and your emotional plan, too! - Dave

Integrity: The Solid Foundation of Business “Integrity should not be a commodity.”

T
he first needed trait for a successful business is to adopt a complete and thorough understanding of personal and professional integrity. By definition, Webster states that integrity is “a firm adherence to a code of especially moral or artistic values; incorruptibility, soundness, completeness”. That trait should be rooted in each of us; sadly, there are gaps. We can look at the world around us or read the news and see reports of behavior that lacks all integrity. As business owners, we must strive to provide service and products that reflect integrity in all of our dealings. It is on this basis that we grow and prosper, both ourselves and our community. One of the best ways to understand integrity in practice is to look to examples around us that demonstrate this character trait. In our area, I look to the Wise County Clerk‘s office here in Decatur. Lead for over twenty years (that reflects observable integrity!), by The Honorable Sherry Lemon, I have found all of the traits mentioned above in action. The team of women and men working with Lemon reflect her thoughtfulness, compassion and attention to detail. They are committed to a level of integrity that is unsurpassed in this area. The training provided to her team has proven to develop into a cohesive and professional display of knowledge and leadership. I applaud their actions and the trust they provide. What can we learn from this local model? Our businesses must reflect a strong adherence to honesty, morality and trust. We must invest in training of ourselves and our employees. We must demonstrate knowledge and leadership in our field of service. We must have the integrity to refuse to compromise on matters of principle. We must ‘walk the talk’. he little settlement of Cottondale dates to before the Civil War? As early as 1860 it had stores, blacksmith shop, school and church, drug store, doctors. Post office was recognized 1875, residents did receive mail. After the death of her husband, a Mrs. Woodruff came to the town and married Mr. Bridges, she cared for the mail in a trunk until it was picked up by the proper persons. Margaret Stephenson Mann was believed to be the first white woman to live west of the Trinity River. She was born in Roane County Tennessee, January 2, 1863, came to Upshur County, Texas, where she married James Mann, November 23, 1891. Mrs. Mann is buried at Cottondale, having died December 23, 1920. One of her sons, W. J. Mann was one of Wise County’s early day sheriffs, and later served as a Wise County Commissioner. ■

Rosalie Gregg was born near Hayden, New Mexico. Ms. Gregg graduated from Paradise High School and from Decatur Baptist College. She married Robert Nolen Gregg, Jr., who had been a Prisoner of War for 3-1/2 year during which time he helped build the railroad that led to the Bridge over the River Kwai in Thailand. Laying Down the Law
According to Webster’s Dictionary, “integrity” is a firm adherence to a code of especially moral or artistic values. That sounds good, but what does it mean to you in everyday life? How do we know if we have integrity? What if we lose it, can we find it again? Think of it this way. Integrity is the picture. Traits like honesty, reliability, morality, and ethics, among other things, make up the colors in the image. If your picture lacks any color, the image becomes distorted and blurry.

So what does this mean to me? If you are an honest person, but you are unreliable and immoral then your integrity is compromised. The same applies if you are a dishonest person but you are very reliable. Without a single part, your integrity as a person weakens significantly. Only when you hold all the pieces will other people see you as a person of integrity. Just doing enough to “pass” in this area is not acceptable. What happens when we err in life and make mistakes that compromise our integrity? Will that damage buff out or is it a total loss? Your personal integrity is a bit like trust. Once you lose that trust, it is often an arduous process to rebuild. Failing to show up on time once or twice is generally not on the same level as lying or stealing but they all compromise your integrity to some extent. The first may be remedied with a sincere apology and dedication to avoiding it in the future. The latter will take significantly more effort on your part, if it can be fixed at all. Integrity is a lifelong process that must be nurtured and evaluated constantly. A few self-evaluation questions may be in order. Regardless of the situation, do you do what you say you are going to do? Can people trust what you say is the truth? And if you really want to gauge your integrity: When faced with a dilemma or problem do I make the morally and ethically right decision regardless of how difficult it may be? ■

As the wife studies she realizes she wants someone more experienced in the room to lean on. She and her husband have several discussions about how potentially awkward it would be to have a doula there. She has the tools to help yet she’s virtually a stranger. How can this be reconciled? There is a delicate balance to achieve here. First of all, the doula spends time with the couple to understand how they work together. She makes it her mission to get to the heart of their desires surrounding their birth. She knows what a great experience it can be and it’s her top priority to help the couple “stop and smell the roses” in birth, so to speak. The doula’s goal is to make Dad the hero in his wife’s eyes. There’s not much more to intimacy than hero status, now is there?! Another part of the doula’s job is to melt into the background when appropriate. I look away when they are stealing a sweet kiss or quiet conversation. I have left the room for a while so my clients could have some time alone before their baby was born. I want to stay as long as I am needed after the baby is born, but never a moment too long. Once baby has started nursing and the couple feels settled in, I am out of there quickly so the couple can bask in their achievements. Before we knew what a doula was, my husband and I always chose to have our babies with just the staff and us. Once we started giving our first born child siblings, we kept the extended family at bay while Big Sister met the new baby. Childbirth is sacred and the moments around it should be protected and cherished! Make a plan before baby is due to ensure mom has just the right people in the room to achieve the intimacy she desires. ■

The Dog Days of Summer
W
ith summer comes long sunny days, lazy days at the pool and delicious outdoor barbeques. But along with the days of frolicking and fun comes extremely high temperatures, which can be dangerous for your dog. Veterinarians at the University of Pennsylvania’s Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital have some advice for keeping your dog comfortable in the summer months. • Heatstroke is a major danger in the hot days of summer. One way dogs can develop heatstroke very quickly is when they are left alone in a car – even if the window is cracked. Symptoms of heatstroke include: heavy, loud breathing, staggering gait and a bright red tongue or gums. If you think your dog may have heatstroke, apply cold compresses to his belly or wet him down, and take him to the veterinarian immediately – heatstroke is life-threatening. • The coolest hours of the day are in the early morning and late evening. These are the times you should exercise and feed your dog. • Although a swimming pool may seem like a good way to cool down your dog, make sure you don’t leave him

unsupervised. Not all dogs are natural swimmers and could drown if they fall in. • If your dog is kept outdoors be sure they have shade and fresh water access at all times. If you live in a warm climate, it is a good idea to hose down the dog before work, at lunch or whenever you can to provide extra cooling (even if your dog is not overheated in the first place). • With the warmer temperatures of summer, cars over heat and may leak antifreeze. (This is the bright green liquid found oozing from that car with the engine fan on.) Also, people change their antifreeze and may spill or leave unused antifreeze out where pets can access it. Antifreeze tastes sweet and is inviting to pets (and children). It is also extremely toxic in very small amounts. • Dogs spend more time outdoors in summer, and increased exposure to nature comes with an increased risk of parasites like fleas and ticks, as well as encounters with rabies carriers. Check for ticks and f leas by grooming your pet daily. • Many animals have a fear of thunderstorms and fireworks, due to the loud noises produced. Allay your dog’s fears by actively distracting him with play, instead of with just a stroke or caress. In the long term, he may come to associate that stress factor with positive things like playing and treats. Turning on the TV or the stereo can help muffle some of the noise. othing beats the slower pace of summer. There is time to enjoy moments sipping iced tea with a friend, taking a dip in the pool, sitting on the porch watching the sun set, and trading in our bulky winter clothes for the freedom of more minimal apparel. Staying cool and looking polished is not always an easy task, especially if you work in an office environment. Clothing and grooming are instant communicators of who you are and provide others valuable cues about your professionalism. Here are a few tips so you don’t let your image melt in the summer heat.
Dress Smart
Select clothing that breathes. Technology has not only changed how we communicate with each other, it has also transformed our fabric choices. High tech fabrics can keep you cool and wick perspiration away from your body. These features were first introduced into sportswear, but we are now seeing them spring forth in business clothing. Select wrinkle free fabrics. Who wants to spend their summer ironing or picking up laundry at the cleaners? Don’t forget a jacket or wrap. Although the temperature may be sizzling outside, most buildings range from cool to downright cold. Also, a jacket provides greater authority if you are in a business setting. Wear comfortable shoes. The most popular footwear in summer is flip flops. While they may be comfortable

Be well groomed. Summer heat not only causes horses to sweat, it leaves people dripping with perspiration. Extra attention to bathing is a must. Create hair free zones. Ladies, pay special attention to those parts of the body that make their summer debut. Whether you shave, wax, or use a laser treatment, you must remain hair free. Bare feet deserve extra attention. With sandals and flip flops the mainstay of footwear, your feet must be in tip top shape. Schedule a pedicure every few weeks, or treat yourself to one at home. Don’t forget the sunscreen! I know we hear this all the time, but along with soap and water, it is a must! Apply enough, and apply it often! ■

Pink Lemonade Ingredients 2 cups white sugar 9 cups water 2 cups fresh lemon juice 1 cup cranberry juice, chilled
Prep Time: 10 Min Ready In: 10 Min
Yields about 3 Quarts Directions - In a small saucepan, combine sugar and 1 cup water. Bring to boil and stir to dissolve sugar. Allow to cool to room temperature, then cover and refrigerate until chilled. - Remove seeds from lemon juice, but leave pulp. In pitcher, stir together chilled syrup, lemon juice and remaining 7 cups water.
Yields 3 Quarts Directions Combine the watermelon, strawberries, lemon juice, sugar, and water in a blender. Blend until smooth.

Prep Time: 10 Min Ready In: 10 Min Yields about 6 servings Directions Cut the lemons in half and scoop the pulp into a blender. Add half of the rinds along with the sugar, vanilla extract, and 2 cups of the water. Blend until smooth, then strain into a serving pitcher and stir in the remaining water.
