Тінь письменника – Author’s Shadow технічних перекладачів, на яку мене, як перекладача «Гаррі Поттера», запросили в ролі почесного гостя, оточивши неабиякою увагою, адже, перефразовуючи приказку «Поганий той солдат, який не мріє стати генералом», можна сказати, що «Поганий той технічний перекладач, який не мріє перекладати художні тексти» ☺. І справді, виявилося, що майже всі присутні там технічні перекладачі уявляли себе в душі перекладачами світових художніх бестселерів, проте захоплений блиск у їхніх очах дещо тьмянів, коли заходила мова про оплату праці та з’ясовувалося, що перекладачі нудних і одноманітних технічних текстів заробляють набагато більше, ніж перекладачі художніх творів ☺. Н.П, Багато перекладачів пов’язані з музикою (грають на музичних інструментах, співають, створюють музичні твори, танцюють). Як Ви можете це пояснити? Віктор Морозов. Ось це мені пояснити найлегше ☺, адже людина, так чи інакше пов’язана з музикою, набагато краще може відчути внутрішній темпоритм твору, вловити притаманну цьому твору «мелодію» і, відповідно, зробити переклад таким, щоби його хотілося не просто читати, а наспівувати, мов улюблену пісню! ☺

N.P. What are the problems shared by of Ukrainian and American translators of artistic fiction and what different issues do they have ? Victor Morozov. The greatest common problem of translators of fiction from Ukraine and other countries (not only the United States) is adequate payment for the time and effort involved in translating literary works. During the Paris conference of Harry Potter translators, we even thought of establishing an independent translators’ union to protect our rights under the slogan «Translators of all countries — unite!»☺ I also recall another international conference held in Ohrid (Macedonia). That was a conference of technical translators, to which I (as a translator of Harry Potter) was invited as an honoured guest. There is a saying: «bad is the soldier who does not dream of becoming a general.» In a similar vein, «bad is the technical translator who does not dream of translating fiction»☺. Indeed, it turned out that almost all the technical translators at the conference secretly dreamed of becoming translators of literary global bestsellers. However, the sparks in their eyes quickly faded when it turned out that translators of boring and monotonous technical texts usually earn a lot more than translators of artsy fiction☺.
