Так само люди, що розмовляють різними мовами, лякаються, якщо перекладач зникає, не приходить або просто мовчить. Хто такі перекладачі? Ці люди залишаються непомітними, їхнє ім’я друкують дрібним шрифтом у перекладених ними книжках, а іноді й узагалі не вказують під час конференцій, симпозіумів та самітів. Перекладачі спостерігають за життям у всьому його розмаїтті, працюючи в лікарнях, у відділках поліції, на заводах чи на виставках і ярмарках. Подорожуючи різними країнами, вони вивчають психологічні та культурні особливості різних народів, часто не встигаючи побачити пам’ятки архітектури. Вони підписують договори про конфіденційність і зберігають державні та комерційні таємниці краще за будь-кого. Журнал “Тіні” ставить за мету створити платформу для спілкування між перекладачами з різних країн. Тут вони діляться своїм досвідом, спілкуються з авторами художніх творів, сперечаються і відкривають для себе щось нове в професії. Dear readers!

If all of a sudden people cannot see their shadows on the wall they get scared. Similarly, people speaking different languages get scared if an interpreter disappears, does not come or just stops speaking. Who are interpreters and translators? They are professionals whose name is printed in small font in the books they translate, or is not even mentioned during conferences, symposiums and summits?

Translators observe life in all its diversity; working in hospitals, police departments, at factories or exhibitions and fairs.

Travelling around different counties they learn thoroughly the psychological and cultural features of different nations, while often having no time to see architectural monuments. They sign non-disclosure agreements and keep state and commercial secrets better than anybody else.

The purpose of Shadows is to be a platform of communication for translators and interpreters of all countries. Here they can share their experience, talk to authors, dispute and discover something new in their profession.

The journal articles are also interesting for the readers who are not involved in any translation work. Translated literature is read and discussed everywhere in the world, and one can learn interesting facts about medicine, police, journalism or other fields from interpreters and translators, for they work in the field without actually belonging to it. Віктор Морозов, відомий український перекладач, співак і композитор, поділився з нами думками про труднощі перекладу Гемінґвея українською, ми, звісно, не забули про Гаррі Поттера в його 20-річчя і трохи поспілкувалися на загальні перекладацькі теми.

Victor Morozov, a well-known Ukrainian translator, singer and composer, revealed to us the difficulties of translating Hemingway into Ukrainian; we of course talked about Harry Potter at the 20th Anniversary of the book, and discussed some general problems of translators.

Н.П. Ідея цього інтерв’ю в мене виникла після презентації Вашого перекладу «Фієсти…» на Книжковому Арсеналі цього року. Там Ви казали, що попри те, що мова Гемінґвея здається простою, прийом «айсбергу» ускладнює процес перекладу. Який саме епізод роману було найскладніше передати?

N.P. The idea of the interview came to me after the presentation of your translation of «Fiesta « at this year’s Knyzhkovyi Arsenal* book fair, in Kyiv.You mentioned that despite the fact Hemingway’s language seems simple, the «iceberg» method makes the translation complicated. Which episode of the novel was the most difficult to translate?

Віктор Морозов. Мені важко виділити якийсь один окремий епізод, адже весь роман виявився значно складніший для перекладу, ніж я собі уявляв, згадуючи юнацькі враження від знайомства з творами Гемінґвея. Пам’ять зрадливо підсувала мені спогади про лаконічну та стислу манеру його письма, короткі речення, безліч на позір простих розмовних діалогів, тож я був переконаний, що перекладатиметься легко та швидко. Проте не так сталося, як гадалося, бо я не врахував підступної теорії «айсберга», що лежала в основі літературного стилю Гемінґвея, котрий вважав, що письменник, добре ознайомлений з матеріалом, про який пише, може «видаляти» з тексту зайві пояснення, приховуючи від читача підспудне значення описаних подій, що йде тільки на користь твору, а читач це приховане під поверхнею тексту значення відчуватиме підсвідомо (знову ж таки, якщо письменник добре знає, про що пише, бо інакше текст «провалюватиметься», буде сповнений порожнин). Тому то й на позір прості, мінімалістичні діалоги й описи виявилися далеко не такими простими для перекладу, адже треба було постійно морочити собі голову над тим, що мав на увазі автор і що він приховував від читача, для того, щоб адекватно, з правильними смисловими інтонаціями передати його задум.

Victor Morozov. It’s difficult to single out any single episode, because the whole novel turned out to be much trickier to translate than I imagined, recalling my impressions of reading Hemingway’s novels in my youth.

Н.П. Які питання залишилися до тексту оригіналу, що їх хотілося б поставити авторові? Віктор Морозов. Якби я мав нагоду перенестися на машині часу на декілька десятиріч у минуле й зустрітися з автором, я б йому сказав: «Шановний пане Ернесте, я розумію, що Ви хотіли приховати від читача глибинний зміст Вашого твору, але що ж робити в такому разі бідолашним перекладачам? Чи не могли б Ви скласти для нас окрему книжечку, у якій би все це належним чином розтлумачили, бо Вам же добре відомо, з чого складаються 7/8 айсберга, схованого від нас усіх, а ми ж то бачимо тільки ту 1/8 тексту, що стирчить на поверхні? СОС — рятуйте наші перекладацькі душі!»☺)

I remembered the concise style of his writing — short sentences, simple dialogues — so I was convinced that the translation would go quickly and easily. However, it didn’t happen that way at all because I failed take into account the deceptive «iceberg theory,» which was the basis of Hemingway’s literary style. He believed that if a writer of prose knows enough of what he is writing about, he may omit any additional explanations, thereby hiding from the reader the deeper meaning of the story, which only makes the story better. The reader’s subconscious will sense these things, but only if the writer knows his subject well; otherwise there will be «hollow places» in his writing. That’s why deceptively simple, minimalist dialogues and descriptions were far from easy to translate, since it was necessary to constantly speculate about what the author meant and decipher what he had concealed from the reader in order to adequately convey his ideas with their proper underlying connotations.

N.P. What questions have not been answered concerning the original text that you would like to ask the author?

Victor Morozov. If I had the opportunity to take a time machine a few decades back to the past where I could meet the author, I would say to him: «Dear Mr. Ernest, I understand that you wanted to hide the deepest meaning of your work from the reader, but what are we, poor translators, supposed to do?

Could you please write a small secret book for us in which everything is properly explained? Because while you are aware of what makes up the hidden 7/8ths of your iceberg, we only see 1/8th of it — the text that is on the surface! S.O.S. — save our translators’ souls!»☺ I would also ask Hemingway about something not directly related to «Fiesta,» but which undoubtedly

Я був переконаний, що перекладатиметься легко і швидко. Проте не так сталося, як гадалося, бо я не врахував підступної теорії «айсберга», що лежала в основі літературного стилю Гемінґвея. і сигарети італійським солдатам, що були в шанцях на лінії фронту, і після вибуху, внаслідок якого один солдат загинув, а другий залишився без ніг, Гемінґвей знепритомнів, а згодом описав цей свій стан: «І я помер. Відчув, як моя душа чи що там ще вислизнула з мого тіла, немов шовкова хустинка, яку висмикуєш із кишені. Вона політала довкола, а тоді повернулася назад, і я вже не був мертвий.» Н.П. Як Ви впоралися з проблемою того, що українські слова і речення довші за англійські, бо це є настільки важливим для передання стилю Гемінґвея? Віктор Морозов. З цією проблемою я вже зіштовхувався раніше, коли перекладав або редагував англомовні кінофільми для дубляжу. І якщо в книжці ще можна при потребі вставляти в діалоги довші слова, розтягуючи, так би мовити, речення, то під час перекладу кінодіалогів необхідно дотримуватися оригінального темпоритму, бо інакше вийде незбіг між текстом і рухом губ кіноперсонажа, який вимовляє цей текст на екрані. Цей досвід, мабуть, придався мені і в процесі перекладу лаконічних діалогів Гемінґвея. Н.П. В українській «Фієсті…» герої, які є англійцями, американцями та представниками інших культур, здаються трохи українцями, завдяки мовленню. Таке одомашнення було застосовано навмисно? Віктор Морозов. Я завжди намагаюся певною мірою «одомашнити» мову персонажів

influenced all of his later life and work — his ‘out of body experience.’ It happened in July of 1918, during World War I, when Hemingway, an ambulance driver, was delivering chocolate and cigarettes to Italian soldiers in the trenches near the front lines and an explosion knocked him unconscious, also killing an Italian soldier and blowing off the legs of another. N.P. How did you cope with the problem of different length of words in English and Ukrainian,

Ваші переклади «Гаррі Поттера» вже стали хрестоматійними, зараз мої студенти-перекладачі — це те покоління, яке зростало на книжках про Гаррі, вони Ваші великі прихильники, бо вже зараз вони можуть оцінити тонкощі перекладу. Вас багато запитували про переклади «Гаррі Поттера», але ж залишається ще багато питань, наприклад, як Ви працюєте над перекладом власних назв: відразу шукаєте найкращий варіант чи залишаєте це питання невирішеним до кінця книги? Віктор Морозов. Коли я працюю в студії над записом нових пісень, дуже люблю, коли вдається записати пісню з першого ж дубля, адже повторюючи запис знову і знову, можна вдосконалити його технічно, але іноді втрачається безпосередність першої й найавтентичнішої емоції. Так само і в процесі перекладу я найчастіше зупиняюся на тому варіанті перекладу власної назви, який спадає мені на думку відразу, спонтанно й легко, хоч інколи, звичайно ж, доводиться робити нові й нові «дублі»☺, шукаючи найвлучнішого рішення.

Мої діти були дуже схвильовані та здивовані, коли дізналися, що Ви погодились на інтерв’ю, тож ось два запитання від них. Віталій (23 роки): Чому Геґрід розмовляє гуцульською? Віктор Морозов. Не зовсім так, Віталію, — «україномовний» Геґрід розмовляє у мене діалектом, якого насправді немає, сумішшю карпатських говірок — бойківських, гуцульських, покутських тощо. Пояснюю, чому так сталося.

which is of dramatic importance for rendering Hemingway’s style?

Victor Morozov. I encountered this problem before when translating or editing English-language films for dubbing into Ukrainian. You can insert longer words into dialogues in a book, or stretch out sentences, but when translating cinematic dialogues, you have to follow the original length of speech, otherwise there will be a discrepancy between the text and the motion of the lips of the character speaking on the screen. This experience seems to have helped me a lot in translating Hemingway’s concise dialogues.

N.P. In the Ukrainian version of Fiesta… the characters, who are representatives of English, American and other cultures, seem to be a bit Ukrainian, thanks to their manner of speaking. Did you use domesticate their language deliberately ?

Victor Morozov. To some extent I always try to «localise» the language of the characters so that the translation sounds natural in Ukrainian, and is not just a literal copy of the English original. But the main thing here, of course, is to not overdo it, to find the right balance.

N.P. Your translations of Harry Potter are now classical, and now my students at the translation department belong to the generation who have grown up with books about Harry. They are now great fans of yours because they can truly evaluate all the nuances of translation. You have an-

When I’m translating names, I most often choose the one that comes to my mind immediately, spontaneously and easily. swered a lot of questions about Harry Potter but still there are a lot of other, for instance, what is your method of translating Proper Names: do you look for the best variant immediately, or leave it till the end of the book?

Victor Morozov. When I’m recording new songs in the studio, I really love it when I can record a song from the first take, because repeating the recording over and over might improve it technically, but sometimes the spontaneity and emotion of the first take is lost. Similarly, when I’m translating names, I most often choose the one that comes to

10 Річ у тім, що мова Геґріда в «Поттеріані» вельми своєрідна й дивна, не зовсім зрозуміла, скажімо, дітям у Північній Америці. Тому, перекладаючи «Гаррі Поттера» й розмірковуючи над тим, якою мовою мав би заговорити наш, «український» Геґрід, я пригадав, яке велике враження справила на мене ще в студентські роки книжка поезій Лорки в геніальному перекладі Миколи Лукаша, де поетичний цикл, написаний, якщо не помиляюся, каталонською мовою, Лукаш переклав гуцульською говіркою. Мені відразу здалося, що кошлатий напіввелетень Геґрід мав би народитися в горах, тому я й вигадав для нього характерну «гірську» мову — суміш карпатських говірок. Лєра (14 років): Вам більше подобаються романи про «Гаррі Поттера» чи їх екранізації? Віктор Морозов. Звичайно, Лєро, мені більше подобаються романи, адже жодна, навіть найталановитіша екранізація не в змозі відтворити всіх нюансів і сюжетних ходів роману, до того ж, читаючи роман, можна й самому вільно фантазувати й нічим не обмежувати власну уяву! Н.П. І ще кілька запитань загального характеру. Чи потрібно перекладачам об’єднуватися для вирішення спільних проблем? Віктор Морозов. Звичайно, потрібно, та це, властиво, і відбувається природним чином. Скажімо, перекладачі «Гаррі Поттера» з цілого світу (від Бразилії до Японії) створили своєрідний інтернет-клуб, обмінюючись думками стосовно проблем, які виникали в процесі роботи над текстом, і ділячись порадами. А восени 2009 року ми навіть зустрілися всі разом у Парижі на міжнародній конференції «Діалог між культурами за допомогою перекладів «Гаррі Поттера». Н.П. Чим схожі і чим відрізняються проблеми українських літературних перекладачів та їхніх колег зі Сполучених Штатів? Віктор Морозов. Найбільшою спільною проблемою перекладачів художньої літератури з України та інших країн світу (не тільки США) є належна оплата нелегкої перекладацької праці. Під час паризької конференції перекладачів «Гаррі Поттера» ми навіть думали про створення незалежної перекладацької профспілки для захисту власних прав під гаслом «Перекладачі всіх країн — єднайтеся!»☺ Також мені пригадується інша міжнародна конференція, що проходила в Охриді (Македонія). Vit (24) Why does Hegrid speak the Hutsul dialect?

Victor Morozov. Not quite, Vitaliy. My «Ukrainian» Hagrid actually speaks with a non-existent dialect, a mixture of Carpathian dialects — Boyko, Hutsul, Pokuttia, etc. I’ll explain why this happened. First of all, Hagrid in the Harry Potter series speaks a peculiar and rather strange language, not entirely understandable, for example, to children in North America. So when I was translating the books and thinking about what kind of language our «Ukrainian» Hagrid should speak, I thought about Lorca’s book of poetry brilliantly translated

One of Lorca’s poems, written, if I’m not mistaken, in Catalan, was translated by Lukash in a Hutsul dialect, and I remembered how much I liked this innovative approach when I was still a student. So I thought that a shaggy half-giant Ukrainian Hagrid would have been born in the Carpathian mountains☺, and I invented a special «mountain» language for him — a mixture of Carpathian dialects.

Lera (14): Which do you prefer, Harry Potter novels or films?

Victor Morozov. Naturally, Lera, I like the novels more because no film adaptation, even the most talented one, is able to reproduce all the nuances of a novel. Also, when reading a novel, one can freely fantasise, which does not limit a reader’s imagination!

N.P. Now can you answer some general questions?

Is it necessary for translators to unite to solve common problems?

Victor Morozov. Yes, this is absolutely necessary, and, in fact, is already happening. For example, Harry Potter translators from around the world (from Brazil to Japan) created an online community, exchanging views on problems that arise in the process of working on the text, and sharing tips. In the fall of 2009 we even all got together in Paris at an international conference on «Cultural Dialogue through Harry Potter Translations.»

N.P. What are the problems shared by of Ukrainian and American translators of artistic fiction and what different issues do they have ?

Victor Morozov. The greatest common problem of translators of fiction from Ukraine and other countries (not only the United States) is adequate payment for the time and effort involved in translating literary works. During the Paris conference of Harry Potter translators, we even thought of establishing an independent translators’ union to protect our rights under the slogan «Translators of all countries — unite!»☺ I also recall another international conference held in Ohrid (Macedonia). That was a conference of technical translators, to which I (as a translator of Harry Potter) was invited as an honoured guest. There is a saying: «bad is the soldier who does not dream of becoming a general.» In a similar vein, «bad is the technical translator who does not dream of translating fiction»☺. Indeed, it turned out that almost all the technical translators at the conference secretly dreamed of becoming translators of literary global bestsellers. However, the sparks in their eyes quickly faded when it turned out that translators of boring and monotonous technical texts usually earn a lot more than translators of artsy fiction☺.

The Ukrainian poet, Liubov Iakymchuk, once noted that apricot trees marked the border between Ukraine’s Donbas and Russia. If you are in East Ukraine in summer it is impossible not to notice them; their fruit falls and explodes on dusty summer pavements. However, the cultivation of apricot trees ceases abruptly at the border. The countries are also separated by two languages, as distinct as their landscapes. However, they share a common ancestor, the kingdom of Rus, with its capital in Kyiv.

Ukraine was part of the Russian Empire and many Russians still believe that the two countries are one nation. This conception leads some Russians to regard Ukrainian culture with hostility; a blasphemy against Russia. From the 17th Century onwards, Russia tried to strangle the Ukrainian language with bans and restrictions. In 1729, a decree required that all state decrees issued in Ukrainian be rewritten in Russian. The Valuyev circular of 1863 banned publishing secular and religious books, apart from Belles-lettres, in Ukrainian. Its author, the interior minister Pyotr Valuyev, stated that, «the Ukrainian language never existed, does not exist, and shall never exist.» The 1876 Ems Ukaz banned publishing new books and performing plays in Ukrainian. Yet, in spite of legislative strangulation, the language remained like a sea held in check by a levee.

Через таке сприйняття деякі росіяни вороже ставляться до української культури і вважають її протиросійським блюзнірством. Починаючи з XVII сторіччя Росія постійно намагається придушити українську мову за допомогою заборон і обмежень.

1729 року наказом Петра І всі укази, видані українською мовою, вимагалося переписувати російською. Валуєвський циркуляр 1863 року забороняв публікацію українською світських і реліґійних книг, окрім творів, що належали до красного письменства. Автор цього циркуляру, міністр внутрішніх справ Петро Валуєв проголосив: «Української мови не було, немає і бути не може». Емський указ 1876 року забороняв публікацію нових книг і постанову п’єс українською. Утім, попри законодавчі утиски, мова все ще була чимось на кшталт моря, що його стримує дамба.

Ukraine is breaking free of Russian domination; the last statues of Lenin have been toppled, and its literature is booming. The country’s authors were always more daring than their Russian counterparts.

The head of Ukrainian Studies at Cambridge, Rory Finnin, points out that many exceptional writers who chose to use Ukrainian could have pursued a career in one of the dominant imperial languages.

He notes that to write in Ukrainian was «to defy convention and imperial fashion, often at personal cost; it was to refuse to conform to imperial majorities, often at the expense of wider renown.

As Melville would say, they believed that it was better to risk failing in originality than succeeding in imitation.»

During the 1920s, the Soviet State fostered Ukrainian culture, albeit within Soviet parameters.

However, in Ukraine, where the indigenous language had been outlawed from most public space, the policy became the instrument of a genuine renaissance (Lavrinenko 1959). There was a volcanic eruption in Ukrainian literature in the 1920s which left a body of work that is a vital and neglected part of Europe's literary legacy. Most of the writers died during Stalin’s genocide of Ukraine in the 1930s.

Ukrainian literature is undergoing a second renaissance after the Revolution of Dignity in 2014.

Yet, even before then, it remained faithful to the experimental spirit noted by Finnin. The Russian translator of Ukrainian literature, Elena Marinicheva,

argues that Ukrainian literature has «advanced further» than Russian. Unfortunately the West has internalised Russia’s view of Ukrainian literature as second rate or artificial. When it comes to translated literature «The (Russian) empire strikes back.»

The volume of literature translated into English from both languages reflects the negative perception of Ukraine among English speakers. The statistics published by Literature Across Frontiers show that only 4% of the books published in the United Kingdom are translations from other languages (Donahaye 2013: 3). Their report identifies a number of issues that restrict the volume of translations into English, including «certain

Journalists and academics have routinely repeated Russian narratives about Ukraine for many decades Російська «м’яка влада» десятиріччями домінувала в британському академічному та політичному дискурсі щодо України. В англійських університетських підручниках 70-х років українську мову представляють як діалект російської. Журналісти та науковці постійно повторюють російські розповіді про Україну протягом багатьох років.

There are almost no statistics available on Ukrainian literature in translation into English. However, a study undertaken by Nadiya Polischuk of Lviv found that there were twenty-one books translated from Ukrainian into English between 2000 and 2013 and published on the European continent (this is defined as Europe, primarily the United Kingdom, excluding Ukraine). The study, however, includes Kurkov's Russian language works which, I believe, should be treated separately, perhaps as «Russian language Ukrainian literature». He accounts for all 16 of the translations and publications in the period up to 2012, and 17 of the translations in total; several of these are repeat publications. In fact, there are only four literary translations from Ukrainian to English published in this period in Europe, and none by an established major publisher. Three of these translations were published by Glagoslav,

16 a Dutch-British press, specialising in Eastern Slavonic literature, and one was published by Poetry Salzburg, an English language poetry press based at the University of Salzburg. So, even if we look at Ukrainian literature in translation, the situation duplicates the dominance of Russian language within Ukraine's own media space.

Polischuk also notes that there are clear differences between the situation in the United Kingdom and on the North American continent. The existence of several Ukrainian studies departments in North America has resulted in a more extensive and representative volume of Ukrainian literature in translation. However, classical Ukrainian poetry is absent from the list, and the modern publications she lists include a self-published volume.

Russian soft power has, for many decades, dominated academic and political discourse about Ukraine. Journalists and academics have routinely repeated Russian narratives about Ukraine for many decades — that the East is Russian speaking, that promoting Ukrainian is politically dangerous (and argued that Russian language use in Ukraine was simply an equality issue). These narratives have often been promoted by «friends» as well as «foes» of Ukraine. Ukrainians and their culture often have a negative brand. Ukrainian language literature is marginalised in translation — it is no accident that Ukraine’s most well-known author internationally writes in Russian. The Ukrainian state must be far more active in promoting Ukrainian culture and countering Russia’s influence upon academics, journalists, and publishers. It must work to ensure that the country’s literary cannon is given its rightful place in Europe’s literary heritage. This requires a package of initiatives and developing links with the publishing industry globally. I long to see the day Taras Shevchenko, Olha Kobylianska, Lesia Ukrainka and Pavlo Tychyna are included in the Penguin Classics list. I would love to see a Vasyl Stus prize sponsored

by PEN International. A strategy encompassing these kind of initiatives could transform the perception of Ukraine.

And let’s be clear — the West’s lack of empathy for Ukrainians has largely been conditioned by Russian soft power. That in turn has helped Putin. I think of the Ukrainian soldiers every day and that puts

Ukraine must above all else tell Europe bluntly — our army is fighting for your freedom, and your moral equivocation is a betrayal of your own values. The defence of Donetsk airport was a modern Battle of Thermopylae. The war for the heart and mind of the world must be won and literature has a place here for it shapes people’s imaginations. We need them to see Ukraine for what it is without looking through those tinted Russian glasses. If they only read Russian writers for whom Ukraine was absurd at best or an abomination at worst they will never truly see Ukraine. Equally, they will never see Russia and they will internalise that country’s imperialist narrative. Ukrainian literature is even more important than ever before to a west whose failure to «get» Russia may lead to its own demise.

The image that the West has of Russian culture, as somehow superior to Ukrainian, affects the esteem in which the countries are held. Ukraine is criticised for promoting its own language within Ukraine-Russia can bury numerous cultures under a kind of linguistic asphalt without attracting any condemnation. Ukraine needs to promote its own literature globally or it will always exist in the imagination of other nations as a shadowy Russian province. The legacy of several brave writers who enriched human expression will remain neglected. Literature is a crucial part of how a nation is seen by other nations. When people fall in love with Ukraine’s literature and its culture they will have more empathy with its citizens. It is no exaggeration to say that the Dutch vote against the EU-Ukraine association agreement was due to ignorance and xenophobia.

If the names of Shevchenko and Ukrainka were as well known in Amsterdam as those of Dostoevsky and Akhmatova, the result would have been very different. To misquote an England football manager, some people think literature is a matter of life and death but they are wrong. It is far more important than that.

Якби в Амстердамі знали імена Шевченка й Українки так само добре, як знають імена Достоєвського й Ахматової, результат був би абсолютно іншим. Oleh Shynkarenko told us about his novel Kaharlyk translated into English by Stephen Komarnyckyj, the way from The Guardian article about the novel to the publication of the translation, his cooperation with the translator and many other things.

What do you think your reader is like?

Мій ідеальний читач — це я сам, тому в моїх книжок навряд чи може бути більш ніж один читач. Мене дуже дивує, що інші читачі знаходяться взагалі. Коли на презентацію приходять навіть двоє-троє людей, то я сприймаю це, мов диво. Коли ж їх більше, то я часто не можу промовити навіть жодного слова від здивування. У моїх книжках відбито мій досвід, змінений моєю уявою. Це означає, що мій читач має прагнути дізнатися про це більше. На мою думку, це дуже дивне бажання. Якщо б я був своїм читачем, то я б ніколи своїх книжок не читав, а книгарні, де вони продаються, обходив би десятою дорогою. My perfect reader is me, so my books are unlikely to have more than one reader. I am astonished to know that anybody reads my books. When two or three people come to the presentation of my books I consider it a miracle. When there are more attendees, I am not able to utter a word, I am so astound. My books reflect my experience altered by my imagination. It means that my reader should be eager to know more about it.

To my mind, it is quite a strange desire. If I were a reader I would never read my books, and I would never step in the book-shops selling them. The most incredible thing is that I borrowed the content of my books from real life, so my reader could save a lot of time and money just taking the same things from real life. The idea came to my mind when I read on Facebook about the collection of a Ukrainian poet’s verses translated into English. It was published by Kalyna Language Press owned by Susie Speight and Stephen Komarnyckyj, a translator of Ukrainian origin. I wrote to them proposing to translate my novel, and attached the electronic copy of the book.

They read the novel and liked it, so they suggested organizing the fund-raising for this translation and publication. There was a review of your book in The Guardian (the UK) saying, «A book that the Ukrainian writer Oleh Shynkarynko published in chunks on Facebook during Maidan square protests in order to avoid censorship has been translated into English for the first time.» Was censorship really the main reason why the novel first appeared on Facebook?

Unfortunately, reviews in international media had appeared before the novel was translated into English, so none of the reviewers had really read it. All were excited by the idea that one can

One of the characters, Mykhailo Kalashnikov, speaks some chimeric dialect based on the online dictionary of the Church Slavonic language. It was translated by means of archaic English words about 1000 years old, not used by modern speakers. It is just like in the joke about some blind men and an elephant: each man felt a different part of the elephant body and told what it was like. Sure, the trunk produces an absolutely different impression compared to the hind leg. As far as I can see, the desire to send a message to a reader by means of a text is just a utopia, so you should concentrate on just making the text interesting to read.

Though my English language experience is rather limited, I have a feeling that the translator

Однако и теперешнее мое положение весьма схоже с вышеописанным, ведь перхоть звезд, среди которой я обретаюсь маловразумительной чешуйкой, ежевечерне вытрясаема на небосвод в прихотливом беспорядке. И кажущаяся их неподвижность вовсе не придает отваги малоопытному наблюдателю. О, вакуум, именно в сравнении с тобою все это шевеление напоминает отвратительно-бесцельную возню микробов! Как прекрасно, что у меня нет ни единой подвижной части, а те, что движутся, строго говоря, мне и не принадлежат. Уже давно создаю я видимость сотрудничества с подвижным ”. succeeded in creating a real English novel based on my text, which resembles Kaharlyk as much as Vauxhall resembles our ZAZ Zaporozhets. It might be that the translation is even better than the original, which sometimes happens.

Time and sounds are of great importance in the novel. How is it reflected in the translation?

Time and sounds after being translated got shaped even more mathematically. I was planning my novel to resemble a text-book in physics, so the translator almost made my dream come true. This is the episode characterising the cyborg FRS’s way of thinking, which sounds like an English conceptualist’s verse now: “My physical dimensions are so insignificant that hardly anyone would pay me attention if I was lying on table among rubbish and trinkets. My current position is very similar to the one above. Amidst dandruff stars, I am an unconvincing flake. Every night they sprinkle the sky in capricious disorder.

Their apparent immobility does not encourage the inexperienced observer. O, vacuum, compared with you this tumult recollects the repellently aimless bustle of microbes! Wonderfully I don’t have a mobile component. Those that do move, strictly speaking, are not mine. For ages I have feigned my cooperation with the mobile elements”.

The problem is that the block is written in Russian, and English does not have such a partner language, as Russian for Ukrainian. Therefore, the translator just made a remark that the episode is in Russian.

Even if English had such a partner language, this partnership would not be completely similar to ours. It is a problem of any text where the action is found not only within the plot but also within the language.

Were you asked questions about the novel, while it was being translated?

Yes, there were a lot of questions. We emailed regularly: though Steve is observing very closely what is going on in Ukraine, he cannot be here every day, so he was not always aware of some cultural aspects to some extent; for example, it was really

Even more difficult for the translation of Kaharlyk was the verse Old Grandpa’s Smartphone, which has the following form (see the Ukrainian version): GranДaДy had an old smart Фon MЕny saw Зat telefon, Many gioЛs zaТ Вos so preti Lukshri Дudes ant zo Meni.

В ньому розповідається історія з життя російськомовного українця, який отримав дуже погану освіту, свої знання про світ здобув із неякісних засобів масової інформації, які сформували у нього замість корпусу фактів цілу систему забобонів. Крім того, вірш написаний якимось дуже штучним локальним варіантом російської мови, що зазнав додаткових спотворень через відсутність необхідних букв кириличної абетки: текст викладався кам'яними літерами, які автор знаходив поблизу. Якщо необхідних літер кириличної абетки не було, то він користувався літерами латинської абетки. Разом із Стівеном ми створили багато версій англійського перекладу цього вірша. Я сподіваюсь, що остання версія є трохи ближчою до оригінала.

Я закінчив роман у лютому 2014-го, а отже, події на Майдані певним чином вплинули на нього. Якщо б революція програла, то публікація роману у Facebook дійсно могла би стати актом боротьби із цензурою. Взагалі найбільша складність перекладу з української на будь-яку іншу мову полягає в тому, що у жодної мови світу немає такої мови-партнера, як в української. Можливо, дещо схожий варіант із фламандською мовою у Бельгії. У неї там є два партнери: німецька та французька. І сто років тому в Бельгії їхнє партнерство нагадувало таке саме в сучасній Україні: фламандською у Бельгії було невигідно говорити у певних районах. Які є плани щодо перекладів Ваших творів: якими мовами, у яких країнах? Я сподіваюсь, що наступні переклади вийдуть у Чехії та Польщі, оскільки у мене там багато знайомих перекладачів, які вже мають копії моїх романів та читають їх. У Польщі навіть є одна перекладачка, що переклала половину “Кагарлика” для себе, в якості тренування.

It tells about a Russian-speaking Ukrainian, who is poorly educated and gained his knowledge about the world from some low-quality mass media, so instead of a fact base he obtained a system of prejudice. Moreover, the poem is written in some artificial local version of Russian, deformed because of the lack of necessary letters in Cyrillic: he made the text out of stone letters, scattered on the ground. When he found no Cyrillic letters, he just used Latin ones.

We created a lot of versions of the verse in English. I hope the final one is rather close to the original.

In general, the greatest difficulty for translation from Ukrainian into any language of the world is that no other language has such a partner language.

It might be that the situation about Flemish in Belgium is a bit similar. There are two partner languages there, German and French. A hundred years ago this partnership resembled what we have in today’s Ukraine: it was not reasonable to talk Flemish in some regions of Belgium.

I finished writing the novel in February, 2014, so the Maidan events affected it to some extent. If the revolution had failed, the publication of the novel on Facebook could have been a real act of fighting against censorship.

What are the plans for translation of your books: which languages and countries?

I hope new translations will be published in Czech Republic and Poland, for I know a lot of translators there, who now have the copies of my novels and are reading them.

A translator in Poland has already translated half of Kaharlyk for her to practice.

«KAHARLYK» AS «КАГАРЛИК» VIEWED BY THE ОЧАМИ TRANSLATOR ПЕРЕКЛАДАЧА We continue talking about the translation of Oleh Shynkarenko’s Kaharlyk with Steve Komarnyckyj, a creative translator, author and publisher who translated the novel into English.

This «dialogue» of the author and the translator is extremely interesting since they view some things through different lenses.

Ми продовжуємо розмову про переклад роману «Кагарлик» Олега Шинкаренка зі Стівеном Комарницьким, літературним перекладачем, поетом і видавцем, який переклав роман англійською мовою. Такий «діалог» між автором і перекладачем є надзвичайно цікавим, тому що на деякі речі вони дивляться по-різному.

You did what seems really impossible for a translator of Oleh Shynkarenko’s Kaharlyk: each section of the translation contains 100 words, as well as the original novel does.

Can you reveal how you managed to do it technically, what was the most difficult section?

I initially made a rough translation of the text which would be more than 100 words long.

Then along with our editorial director I would edit the paragraph, ruthlessly hewing away elements of the word for word rendition that were unnecessary in English. In the second paragraph for example two of the sentences in the original text read as follows:

This works beautifully in the original but can be reduced, by transforming a simile into a metaphor and conflating the second clause of the first sentence with the second sentence. The adjective «paper»

I also drew on my considerable knowledge of English literary styles to create a voice for the narrator of Kaharlyk which reflected the original but was also able to reach an international, literary audience.

We were able to reduce the volume of words in the translation by adopting numerous similar devices.

The trickiest sections were the poems in 26 800 to 26 900 where I had to have some intense discussions with Oleh. These sections mix Latin and Cyrillic with some crazy content which perhaps reflects a Russian nationalist reaction to globalisation wrapped in homophobia and set in a future dystopia.

The texts also supposedly were written by characters dragging huge stone letters into position and using the nearest they could find — hence the alphabet salad.

The book is beautiful, grotesque and funny all at the same time.

Там перемішуються латиниця і кирилиця, вони божевільні за змістом, що відбиває, можливо, російську націоналістичну реакцію на поширення глобалізації, яка замішана на гомофобії та яка з’являється у реаліях антиутопії. The text is written in Ukrainian, though we find a couple of important «characters» speaking Russian. Do you think it is a great loss of the readers of the translation not to have this distinction?

Yes and no. I considered using various devices such as giving these characters a regional English or American accent. The problem is this would, while emphasising the linguistic distinction, have dragged in unwanted associations. We don’t want English language readers to be thinking of Wales, for example, while reading a novel which reflects Ukraine’s current, unique realities. These devices often seem forced. I tried to reflect the distinction typographically by using italics and stylistically by providing these characters with a different voice. However, I used a smattering of Chaucerian English to convey Mykhailo’s use of Church Slavonic. This is not an exact equivalent but helps evoke the strange archaism of his language and has no distracting associations.

Did you laugh while reading Kaharlyk (I did, a lot to tell the truth, but it was a bitter laugh, because it touches something that really hurts)?

Yes of course — I found the Russian army leaflet, the shoot out with the Kyiv mayors, and Mykhailo hilarious. I laughed repeatedly when reading this book. I believe that the humour carries over into English. However, the humour, of course, evokes different responses in different audiences.

I cannot imagine how a Ukrainian feels having lived through the Yanukovych presidency and endured Russia’s endless attempts to dominate Ukrainian society. I laughed at the idea of the robot snipers, but I find it hard to be detached when I think of the Snipers Massacre. I am only a diaspora Ukrainian but I have a measure of anger about Russia’s interventions and how they have affected my family. However, most English speakers, unless perhaps they have seen Winter on Fire, will not have any emotional engagement with this image. The book will simply be a wonderfully multi-layered text. The humorous interplay between several layers of reality reminded me of At Swim-Two-Birds — I hope that English readers will eventually see the book as a classic worthy of comparison with Flann O’Brien.

Я намагався відбити відмінності за допомогою типографіки, наприклад, курсиву, а також стилістики, надаючи героям різного звучання. А втім, щоби передати церковнослов’янську, якою розмовляв Михайло, я використав англійську мову Чосера. Це не є прямим еквівалентом, але ж допомагає викликати те саме відчуття чужорідності, яке виникає під час сприйняття будь-якого архаїзму в мові, крім того, не спричиняє небажаних асоціацій. Ви сміялися, коли читали «Кагарлик» (я сміялася багато, але, чесно кажучи, то був гіркий сміх, бо роман торкається того, що болить)? Так, звісно! Я впевнений, що гумор вдалося передати і в англійському перекладі. Однак гумор, звісно, викликає різну реакцію у різних читачів. Я не можу уявити, що саме відчуває українець, який пережив усе, що відбувалося за часів Януковича, і відчув на собі безкінечні спроби Росії встановити своє домінування в українському суспільстві. Я сміявся, коли прочитав у романі про роботів-снайперів, але не можу абстрагуватися від думки про розстріли, які влаштували снайпери на Майдані. Я лише українець із діаспори, але я відчуваю гнів, коли думаю про російське вторгнення і про те, як це вплинуло на мою родину. Did you first read the book and started translating, or did you translated while reading? What is your usual method of translation?

I read the book first and then began work. I translated from a PDF of the book, which I had open alongside a word file into which I typed my translation. My work is very intuitive. I was taught to read by my father for whom English was a second language. He urged me to read every book I could and I am steeped in English literature. I recast the texts into an English which sounds as if it had been written by an English author. It’s hard to describe this process mechanically because it feels natural and organic. I am like a ventriloquist’s dummy through which the author speaks English.

What else would you like to tell about the translation of this book?

Translating this book was one of the most challenging but also the most rewarding projects I have undertaken. We funded the work with a project on Kickstarter which allowed us to secure support for the book in advance of publication. However, it required a vast commitment of time. The text itself made huge demands of me and the editor. However, the struggle with its multi-layered narrative and use of different languages enriched my own English language skills.

Would you like to translate other books written by Oleh Shynkarenko?

Yes! I would love to translate all Oleh’s novels.

He is an extremely original author who is hard to characterise. The playfulness with narrative is reminiscent of Flann O’Brien but the unique situation of Ukraine has helped him become a unique voice.

Читати мене навчив батько, для якого англійська не була рідною мовою. Він спонукав мене читати якомога більше книжок, тому я і зараз живу англійською літературою. Я перетворюю текст так, щоби він мав вигляд, ніби написаний англійським автором. Важко описати процес технічно, тому що я відчуваю його як щось природне й органічне. 30 Equally, Ukraine is the focus of what I see as a global struggle between oligarchic populism (Putin/ Trump) and popular sovereignty (Euromaidan the Venezuelan protestors). This conflict is also occurring within societies and individuals. Oleh’s work captures this struggle more adequately than that of any other author. I would translate all them — Ukraine’s voice is more important than ever.

Do you think a translator is a researcher to a great extent?

Yes, it is always important to research an author and a text. If you look at the authors of The Executed Renaissance you have to understand the context in which they lived and died. At a more basic level, language is constantly mutating and words drift in and out of use. The aim of all this research is to try to, and in a way, become the author at the moment they wrote the text and to write that text in English.

Of all Ukrainian poets, you translated Pavlo Tychyna, why did you choose his poetry?

I purchased a book by Pavlo Tychyna from a market stall in Ivano-Frankivsk in 1992. I already knew a little about his work from diaspora publications.

The poems were extremely complex but what shone out of the first collection was his rapture with life. I adopted a radically different approach to translating his poetry than I have used elsewhere. I decided to treat the rough translations as first drafts of original English poems. My work was, if you will, a perespiv.

I knew that this approach was the most effective way to capture the spirit of the poems and to evoke the same feelings in the English reader (in so far as is possible). I was lambasted by some for my work, but Sean Street, the well-know UK broadcaster and poet, described the texts as a «revelation». They were cited in The Guardian as the best work in an issue of Modern Poetry in Translation, which contained renderings of classical poetry by Seamus Heaney.

So I would argue that by translating the poetry as a poet I was able to convey the power of Tychyna more effectively than a conventional translator.

Щоразу, перечитуючи його, відкриваєш щось нове, помічаєш такі деталі, які відправляють тебе у подорож поміж культурами. Відчуття руху, пересування не залишає під час прочитання роману. Одіссея головного героя Олександра Сагайдачного починається з руху в часі та просторі в пошуках свого минулого, спогадів та коханої дружини і не припиняється навіть після завершення роману. На шляху до своєї мети Сагайдачний пересувається від одного українського міста чи села до іншого, і кожне з них є окремим світом із набором уявлень, упереджень, традицій і навіть богом. The Odyssey of Oleksandr Sahaidachnyi in Time and Space Natalia Pavliuk The review of the English translation of Oleh Shynkarenko’s novel Kaharlyk, undertaken by Steve Komarnyckyj.

Kaharlyk, by Oleh Shynkarenko, is a real challenge for a translator. It is a multi-layered text with complicated images and numerous allusions. Each time you read it you can discover something new and trace the details sending you to different cultures. The feeling of motion, a journey, accompanies you while you are reading the book. The main character, called Oleksandr Sahaidachnyi, starts his Odyssey moving in time and space to find his past, his memories and beloved wife, and this journey never finishes, even when the novel ends. On his quest Sahaidachnyi moves from one Ukrainian town or village to another, and each settlement is an individual world with beliefs, prejudices, traditions and even their own Gods. All the dangers that are now emerging or progressing in our world have obtained surrealistic development in the novel (though it does not seem so absurd now but, on the contrary, appear to be a reflection of the madness surrounding us).

Analysing the translation of the novel it is hard to single out the most important places or the most difficult challenges the translator, Steve Komarnyckyj, had to deal with, since the whole book is a big translation issue: its form, artistic images and devices, Ukrainian realities, proper names, stylistic use of the Ukrainian and Russian languages, modern and archaic lexis. It was also extremely difficult to preserve the unique

Для чистоти сприйняття я читала оригінал та переклад із достатньою перервою, щоби перевірити, чи справить на мене переклад таке саме враження за силою та якістю, що й оригінал. Експеримент виявився вдалим, і мене захопив текст, ніби я читала його вперше. Я знову опинилась у тому божевільному мозаїчному світі, що складається зі шматків, надзвичайних за суттю та формою. Філософські міркування та іронічний гумор поєднуються у щось об’ємне та справжнє, і деякі частини хочеться читати знову й знову. Перечитуючи роман в оригіналі та перекладі, я робила нотатки, і порівнюючи їх потім, з’ясувала, що мене найбільше вразили одні й ті самі моменти, що свідчить про високу якість перекладу. На жаль, мою оцінку не можна вважати повністю об’єктивною, тому що я не є носієм англійської мови, знаю українські реалії, переживаю зсередини те, що відбувається в Україні. Але ж досвід вивчення англомовної літератури підказує мені відповіді на деякі питання щодо перекладу саме англійською мовою. Завжди цікаво простежити, які засоби обирає перекладач для вдалого передання влучних висловлень автора. У деяких випадках вдається зберігати всі лексичні засоби, наприклад: «Місто — це не стіни та стелі, а простір, прихований між ними.» – «A city is neither walls nor ceilings, but the space concealed between them.» «Віра занадто абстрактна, щоб її втратити» — « Faith is too abstract to lose.» Іноді перекладач обирає слова, які трохи відрізняються від оригіналу, але краще передають думку та є стилістично більш вдалим вибором саме для мови перекладу. «Але людина зазвичай каже трохи не те, що вона збиралася! … Мова завжди псує наші наміри, саме тому ми затинаємося, декілька разів пояснюємо одне й те саме різними словами, а часто й взагалі не відчуваємо, що нас не розуміють. atmosphere of the alternative reality, the motion in time and space, the feeling of anxiety and constant search.

To have a clear perception, I read the translation after a certain period of time had passed since I had read the original text to see if the translation impressed me as strongly as the original. The experiment was a success; I was absorbed by the text as if I were reading it for the first time. I found myself in the same mosaic world, consisting of pieces, extraordinary by their nature and form.

Philosophical speculations and ironic humour are combined into something many-folded and real, and you want to read some of them again and again.

Reading the original novel and its translation, I was making notes, and comparing them afterwards, I found out that I was struck by the same pieces, which proves a high quality of translation. Unfortunately, my assessment cannot be considered objective enough, since I am not a native English speaker, and I know Ukrainian reality very well and live through what is going on in Ukraine every day. However, my experience of studying literature written in English provides me with the answers to some questions as for the translation into English.

It was interesting to trace which means the translator chose to render the author’s smart sayings. In some cases he managed to preserve all the lexical means, use direct equivalents, e.g, «Місто — це не стіни та стелі, а простір, прихований між ними.» — «A city is neither walls nor ceilings, but the space concealed between them.» «Віра занадто абстрактна, щоб її втратити» — « Faith is too abstract to lose.»

Sometimes the translator selected the words that differ from the Ukrainian original but render the idea better and stylistically are a better choice for the translation language. «Але людина зазвичай каже трохи не те, що вона збиралася! … Мова завжди псує наші наміри, саме тому ми затинаємося, декілька разів пояснюємо одне й те саме різними словами, а часто й взагалі не відчуваємо, що нас не розуміють. Але слова — це необхідна

Перекладач тонко відчув образ часу в романі, де його, здається, можна побачити, до нього доторкнутися, його рух скидається на рух повітря, яке може ледь дихати, а може нестися ураганом. Обмеження формою (100 слів у кожному сегменті тексту) змусили перекладача шукати лаконічні лексико-граматичні засоби, у деяких випадках минулий час у тексті оригіналу перетворюється на теперішній у перекладі, не завжди зрозуміло чому, хоча це додає розповіді певної динаміки. З деякими перекладацькими рішеннями можна посперечатися, але це не означає, що переклад недостатньо точний. Головне, що світ побачив цей сучасний український роман, непересічний і неповторний, створений завдяки майстерності автора. Англійська версія роману успішно написана завдяки перекладачеві, який до кожного слова додав своєї любові до української та англійської мов і культур.

The features of Ukraine and the world in 100 year’s time, including «slow races» where the horse that came the last was the winner, armed struggle of mayors of Kyiv for the power in the city where just about 100 people live, four towers of Obukhiv, each with its own myths, as well as morphones, konnektoms, smart satellites and warheads that have their own opinion and act as they like — all these are brilliantly rendered by the translator who found a way to preserve the Ukrainian colouring, using transliteration for some names, and making this world understood, as I feel, to the people of many other cultures.

The translator felt finely the image of time in the novel — it seems you can see the time, touch it, its movement resembles the movement of the wind, which can breathe slightly or dash like a hurricane.

The form restrictions (100 words in each block of text) made the translator search for some laconic lexical and grammatical means: sometimes the past tenses of the original text turned into the present in the translation, which is hard to explain, though it adds some dynamics to the story. There are some translation decisions that can be discussed but they are still accurate enough.

The main thing is that thanks to the translation the world can read this modern Ukrainian novel, unique and extraordinary, created by the author’s talent.

The English version is successful thanks to the translator, who put into each word his love for the Ukrainian and English languages and cultures.

A petition to the UN has been signed for the protection of translators and interpreters around the world for over two years. It has been signed by nearly 45,000 people, another 5,000 are required for it to be considered by the United Nations. На початку березня 2014 року, у Донецьку з’явилися всі відомі газети, журнали, теле- та радіоканали в особі репортерів і операторів, яким терміново знадобилися перекладачі, які також мали виконувати обов’язки зв’язківців, консультантів, логістів, штурманів, перемовників тощо, тобто бути «фіксерами». Петицію було створено організацією «Red T», яка захищає права перекладачів у місцях підвищеного ризику, а також п’ятьма міжнародними асоціаціями лінгвістів. Перекладач-фіксер — це поняття, яке з’явилося в нашому професійному вжитку чотири роки тому. Тоді, на початку березня 2014 року, у Донецьку з’явилися всі відомі газети, журнали, теле- та радіоканали в особі репортерів і операторів, яким терміново знадобилися перекладачі, які також мали виконувати обов’язки зв’язківців, консультантів, логістів, штурманів, перемовників тощо, тобто бути «фіксерами». Я працювала з журналістами тільки на початку подій, і мої спогади обмежуються тільки штурмами офіційних будівель, фантастично пародійними мітингами та засіданнями, прес-конференцією на конспіративній квартирі Губарєва та зустрічами з безпорадною адміністрацією міста й області. Але багато моїх колег і далі працювали, попри небезпеку й незахищеність.

Іn early March, 2014, Donetsk saw well-known newspapers, magazines, television and radio channels in the person; reporters and cameramen, who urgently needed interpreters. These interpreters had to perform the function of consultants, connectors, transport providers, navigators negotiators etc., that is they had to be fixers.

The petition was launched by the Red T, the NGO protecting the rights of translators and interpreters in the sites of high risk, and other five international associations of linguists.

The Fixer-interpreter is a notion we started using in our professional speech over four years ago. Then, in early March, 2014, Donetsk saw well-known newspapers, magazines, television and radio channels in the person; reporters and cameramen, who urgently needed interpreters.

These interpreters had to perform the function of consultants, connectors, transport providers, navigators negotiators etc., that is they had to be fixers. I was working for The Times journalists at the beginning of all the events, and my memories include the Ukrainian patriots standing face to face with separatists on the squares of the city, the first acts of violence beginning, then the seizures of official buildings and grotesque speeches by the new «leaders», the betrayals of the police, the press-conference at Gubarev’s conspiracy flat and interviews with the helpless city and regional administration.

He fixer needs to be prepared to resist aggression and provocations. They have to do their best for the reporter to have a story and for the whole team to stay alive. But some of my friends-colleagues continued working as fixers despite the danger, and being unprotected. To picture the work of fixers in Donetsk and Luhansk regions in 2014, when the wave of journalists was at its height, I talked to the interpreters who worked as fixers when the military action was growing rapidly.

They are experts in interpreting, follow the rules of interpreter’s ethics, and know professional duties better than anybody else. They are Yevgen Lobanov, Serhiy Krasnoshchokov, Igor Protsenko and Maryna.

What should a fixer be prepared to in the armed conflict zone?

Yevhen Lobanov: Apart from a standard set of skills required for conventional field interpreting, a fixer should have a certain degree of stress tolerance.

He or she should also be more focused on non-biased results, that is to try to exclude personal involvement.

An interpreter should first of all have a good command of languages and remember that any interpreting job has its own peculiarities, and working in a war you need to know war terminology. Working in a war, an interpreter has to understand that he/she is going to work at a site where they shoot. «революціонер», більше схожий на рецидивіста. Так, наприклад, команда тележурналістів складається з 2–3 людей, яких потрібно постійно тримати в полі зору, тобто перекладаючи для репортера, треба слідкувати за оператором і звукорежисером, бо «мирне» населення не завжди адекватно поводиться: може під дією «зеленого змія» почати душити журналіста або намагатися вкрасти бронежилети й каски (травень 2014 року, Краматорськ). Сергій Краснощоков. Треба усвідомити, що для фіксера на першому плані — роль посередника між репортером і чужим для нього середовищем. Звісно, ми виконуємо письмовий переклад документів, усний під час інтерв’ю та зустрічей, але, крім цього, треба бути готовим розшукувати людей, досліджувати різні події, забезпечувати транспорт і матеріально-технічну базу для журналістів, бути готовим поїхати до будь-якої локації, виконуючи роль штурмана. The interpreter cannot always like the interviewed: it may be an old woman who longs for the Soviet past, a former communist party official who lost the sense of life in the 1990s and obtained it again in 2014, and two gun-men to protect him in addition, or a «revolutionary man» who looks like a criminal. The fixer needs to be prepared to resist aggression and provocations.

They have to do their best for the reporter to have a story and for the whole team to stay alive. Thus, for instance, a television team includes 2-3 people, and you need to keep an eye on them at all times, which means while interpreting for the reporter you have to watch the cameraman and the sound engineer, because «civilians» do not always behave appropriately: being intoxicated they can start strangling a journalist or try to steal body armour and helmets (May, 2014, Kramatorsk).

Serhiy Krasnoshchokov: You should realise that the most important function of a fixer is to be an intermediary between reporters and the environment where they are aliens. Sure, we have to translate some documents, interpret interviews and meetings, but apart from that we should be able to find a person, study different events, provide a car with a driver, and spare parts for their equipment.

they do, and it is not easy because journalists can work 24 hours a day at a crazy pace. Compared to other interpretation or translation jobs this one requires more effort, stamina, savvy, patience and concentration.

Igor Protsenko: An interpreter should first of all have a good command of languages and remember that any interpreting job has its own peculiarities, and working in a war you need to know war terminology. Working in a war, an interpreter has to understand that he/she is going to work at a site where they shoot. You should know that when the mortars start firing from the Russian side you need to fall on the ground and crawl. You should be prepared for the possibility that your car may be riddled with bullets, and you won't have a vehicle in which to return to the base, so your driver should be experienced enough to take you back. You need to be able to concentrate and behave patiently with those who came to take your home away from you and disrupted the comfortable life you had. I will never forget working for the Spanish television channel TVE in Sloviansk. We were interviewing a bandit wearing the Russian army uniform who was telling us that he had come to liberate the population from Ukrainians and their violence. Asked if he was a citizen of Russia, he replied he was from Sloviansk (Ukraine) with an accent, with vowel reduction, typical of a speaker from central Russia. As a PhD in

However, the journalist must make a story, and the fixer has to hide their feelings and attitude.

How much is a fixer protected when journalists take a risk?

Yevhen Lobanov: It can be compared with a flight in a liner 10,000 meters above the hostilities when everything seems to be under control and all of a sudden something out of the way happens and this is the end. A fixer has no protection — he or she is not covered by Geneva conventions (more often than not the work is not official), he or she has no insurance and almost zero chance of being rescued. The only thing he or she can rely on is the help of media resources; as an example, the story about a fixer from Donetsk working with a large news corporation who was captured in the summer of 2014.

Maryna: Journalists are always at risk in a zone of armed conflict. If a reporter works for a large newspaper or channel they at least have insurance, and their family will get compensation of some hundreds or thousands of euros or dollars if something happens to them. While fixers do not have such an insurance, all they have is daily payment. All I can recommend to fixers is to have an

Serhiy Krasnoshchokov: Journalists who have worked in armed conflicts take care of the personnel’s safety, some media organisations provide fixers with insurance. However, the fixer needs to take care that reporters, especially freelancers who are hunting for bright and impressive shots, keep to the special rules and restrictions prescribed for foreigners and the media. They should keep an eye on the reporters to prevent them wandering into a banned area, using audio — and video recording devices where they are prohibited, stepping over a road border where it could be mined, touching the residuals of ammunition, fragments and heaps. You should also be prepared for abrupt changes in a situation and military action and react reasonably and carefully, according to the state of affairs.

Igor Protsenko: Journalists and interpreters risk everything, they risk their lives, and they have to realise what they are involved in. Here each person makes a choice, and my advice is: make this choice yourself. « …we are at risk. What was the hardest experience?

Yevhen Lobanov: I found it most difficult to work in places with a substantial number of people, rallies or meetings for example. Very often an interpreter is mistaken for a client and becomes a target for negative attitudes. Sometimes I had to explain that it’s the client who says the words, but not the interpreter. It is hard to stay away from personal involvement and cling to an impersonal translation of information when it comes to interpreting utter nonsense. It once happened that a doubtful client asked Russian-speaking colleagues about the accuracy of interpreting and to check the fixer’s work, begging pardon then for their mistrust.

Maryna: The most difficult task was to distract my mind from certain things, especially when working in a field where the remnants of 300 people were scattered (the Boeing catastrophe, July, 2014), or interpreting in a morgue where soldiers’ bodies are brought, and watching a forensic doctor who suspects that the reporters have brought some grenades (Dnipro, March, 2014).

Though the rates they pay are always lower than those that television people offer. Ми проводили 6–8 годин на день зі знімальною бригадою в місцях, куди вони мали прибути. Треба враховувати такі ситуації та мати відповідний одяг і запаси води. Було складно адаптуватися до нового режиму, коли вільний час залишався тільки на сон, а також усвідомити всю зону відповідальності, і що від тебе очікують більшого, ніж здавалося спочатку. Ігор Проценко. Найскладнішим у цій роботі для мене був страх, що ті, хто безконтрольно ходить всюди з автоматами, просто почнуть стріляти для розваги, і це не безпідставно. Наприклад, якось «спасители» (рос. «рятувальники») зайшли до автостанції з криком «Все на пол, лицом вниз!» (рос. «Усі на підлогу, обличчям долу!»), змусили всіх лягти на підлогу й почали стріляти над головами людей, водночас непристойно регочучи, потім спокійно роз’їхалися на машинах. Не було жодної гарантії, що не почнуть стріляти у вас. Важко працювати було завжди й зі всіма. На війні, навіть млявій, завжди складно і страшно, ти перекладаєш, і водночас будь-якого моменту ти можеш побачити автомат, спрямований тобі в голову, і почути кулі над головою, звук яких я не забуду ніколи, опинитися в підвалі — все це відбувалось у Краматорську. Кажуть, час лікує, але коли живеш у вигнанні, при цьому не в Парижі, а так далеко, що найкоротший маршрут триває 32 години… залікувати рани важко.

Особливістю українських фіксерів була їхня освіта, високий інтелектуальний рівень, ерудиція, високий рівень перекладацької підготовки та відповідальність. Вони працювали із принципу, не заради грошей «Ідеального фіксера немає, тому що жодна людина не може поєднувати такі суперечливі вміння і якості: мати перекладацькі навички високого ґатунку, знати людей із різних кіл суспільства: від політиків і чиновників до злочинців і бойовиків. Фіксер має вміти переконувати, бути приємним у спілкуванні, винахідливим, ініціативним, легко пристосовуватися

Serhiy Krasnoshchokov: For me, the most difficult thing was the eternal wait for the OSCE representatives to appear. The film crew were waiting for them for 6-8 hours per stay on the site where they were to show up. You should take into account such circumstances and dress appropriately, and have sufficient water in reserve.

It was also hard to adapt to the schedule, when you have spare time for sleep only, and realise all the responsibility you bear and the high expectations of the client, more than you could imagine setting up this job.

Igor Protsenko: The most difficult part of this job was the fear that those who carry guns uncontrollably can start shooting for fun and with no reason. For instance, on one occasion «saviours» came in the coach station and shouted, «Face down on the floor!» They made everyone lie on the floor and were shooting above people’s heads while laughing evilly. Then they just got into their cars and drove away. Nobody can guarantee they won’t shoot you.

It was hard to work with everyone and be everywhere. During a war, even if it is a low-grade war, it is always hard and scary. While interpreting you can have an automatic gun pointed at your head and hear the sound of bullets above your head, a sound I will never forget, and you can be thrown into a basement, which all happened in Kramatorsk.

They say time heals but it is hard to have your soul cured if you live in exile, in a place which is far from being like Paris but is so far away that the minimum time it takes you to get to Ukraine is 32 hours.

So the special feature of Ukraine fixers was their education and intellectual sophistication, the particular skill as translators and their commitment. They were doing the job from principal not for the money «The perfect fixer does not exist — no person could contain such contradictory skills…

They must have high level of translation skill, they should also be connected to a great variety of people — both politicians and high rank officials, and gangsters and insurgent commanders. The greatest skills of a fixer are powers of persuasion, charm,

guile, initiative, adaptability and patience to remove the stress involved in getting to where the journalist needs to be and allows the journalist the space to think about the story. A good fixer also has good judgement of the risks involved in the story and a good journalist listens when the fixer thinks that the risks are too great. The greatest fixers love what they do and are obsessed with knowing what is really happening. They bring stories to the journalists and make the journalists better than he or she is on their own.

In Iraq there are fixers with 20 years experience, same in Afghanistan.

In Ukraine, I had one of the best teams I ever worked with in Yevgeny and our driver Artur. Yevgeny was really committed, really intelligent and really brave.

Did you feel that you were having a kind of mission of delivering truthful information to the world community?

Євген Лобанов. Безумовно, так. Я би припинив співпрацю з клієнтом, якби події в його/ її викладі істотно спотворювали реальність. Мені пощастило працювати зі справжніми професіоналами. Мене робота приваблювала тим, що ти бачиш, що відбувається сам, без жодної цензури.

Yevhen Lobanov: Definitely yes. I would not work with a client who published distorted information.

I was lucky to work with top professionals. I was addicted to the job, because it gave pure information uncut and uncensored.

Марина. Ну, фіксерами стають здебільшого випадково, а правдиву інформацію доносять журналісти, саме вони формулюють конкретні завдання для фіксерів. Сергій Краснощоков. Звісно, завдяки нашій роботі більше людей дізнається про те, що відбувається, але на цьому і все, — таке собі емоційне відлуння тих подій. Насамперед перекладач має керуватися професійною етикою, наше завдання — забезпечити комунікаційний акт, переклавши так, щоби нічого не втратити й не додати зайвого. У журналістів свої моральні та професійні правила, і на жаль, вони не завжди зображають події об’єктивно. Прикро, коли готовий матеріал відрізняється від того, що ти побачив, і від того, як переклав. Це призводить до внутрішнього конфлікту, коли правильно й чемно робиш свою справу й не бачиш належного результату наприкінці. Ігор Проценко. Я особисто високої місії не відчував. А щодо світової спільноти, то мене вразила її реакція на результати роботи групи іспанського каналу ANTENA 3. Журналісти відзняли матеріал так, як було, змонтували фільм, де можна побачити, як вони бігли, а в них стріляли росіяни (їхній висококласний оператор зміг зняти все). Коли фільм вийшов в ефір, їм сказали, що все це неправда, а вони — лицеміри й погналися за дешевою сенсацією. Згодом я давав інтерв’ю одній із центральних газет у Парагваї, і результат був таким самим — «він усе вигадує, ніколи російських солдатів не було в Україні…»

Maryna: Well, you start working as fixer occasionally, while to deliver truthful information is the journalists’ objective, they usually give certain tasks to the fixers.

Serhiy Krasnoshchokov: Sure, thanks to our job more people learn about the event but that is just an emotional echo of what is going on. For an interpreter the most important thing is to keep to the professional ethics, our task is to provide a communicative act, translating in such a way that nothing is lost and nothing is added. Journalists keep to their own moral and professional rules, and unfortunately don't always reflect the events objectively. It is very disappointing to see a story which differs from what you saw and translated accurately. It brings you to the inner conflict when you do your job correctly and decently, and don't see an adequate result in the end.

Igor Protsenko: I didn't see my job as a mission.

Speaking about the world community, I was struck by its reaction to the work of the Spanish channel ANTENA 3. The reporters made a story about how it all happened, made a film where one could see how they were running away from the Russians who were firing at them (their highly professional cameraman managed to film everything). When the film was they shown, they were told it wasn't true, they were hypocritical liars chasing a sensation. I experienced the same later on when I was interviewed by one of the central newspapers in Paraguay, and the reaction was the same, «he is inventing the events, no Russian soldiers have ever been in Ukraine…»

Тінь експерта – Expert’s Shadow Healthcare interpreting is a necessary and yet underappreciated profession in the US. There are large numbers of first-generation emigrants in the country and there are also many people who come from all over the world to seek high quality treatment. However, the profession still under appreciated because the demand for these services in each language fluctuates greatly, so healthcare institutions cannot justify employing in-house interpreters. There are very few full-time interpreting positions in the hospitals, and most them include managerial tasks, such as organising interpreting through external companies in the city and remote interpreting in the country. Although in some cities with a densely situated Hispanic population, like Chicago, healthcare organisations have full-time interpreters, they are still required to undertake other clerical work, such as the translation of documents, travel planning, logistics, paperwork and escorting foreign patients; in addition to them providing language services.

If there are no full-time jobs for medical interpreters and college education is not free, the majority of medical interpreters, who work only occasionally, will have to be trained through other venues and not at a college. Medical institutions recognise this problem and provide a modicum of professional training within their institutions.

Because university education is very expensive in the US, very few people would consider investing money in the interpreting profession if they know they cannot find a full-time job upon graduation.

In fact, the leading interpreter training schools, like the Monterrey Institute of International Studies or the University of Arizona, which have professional interpreting degrees, are extremely selective, in addition to being expensive, and they train simultaneous interpreters for work in international organisations, such as United Nations and European Union, and for court interpreting. Even though medical interpreting is considered a crucial component in medical care, it is not well remunerated. A person with proper professional training, a university degree in translation and interpreting, can be hired as a full-time manager of language services and be paid a proper salary with benefits. Interpreters who work part-time and are on call have no benefits and are paid the sorry rate of $17-$25/hour. A single person could scrape a living working for $25/hour if they had plenty of work per week, but because the work load is highly irregular one cannot rely on any income whatsoever.

Economic problems aside, one should consider the complexity of the crucially important task of the healthcare interpreter. Refugees comprise a significant population of people who use the services of medical interpreters.1 Refugees come to the US in large communities that have survived together in refugee camps, sometimes for decades. They often speak a rare dialect or language, and sometimes this language has no written form, as in case of Wu with its 80 million speakers in Shanghai.2 Due to their adverse living conditions over extended periods of time, refugees often have little education, and their language frequently has not developed to accommodate the technological wonders of modern medicine. In a word, there might be no native terms 1

In

2015, 125,000 people in the world received a green card through lottery.3 In 2016, foreign nationals and their families received over 140,000 employmentpreference visas and 230,000 family-sponsored immigrant visas.4 Up until 2016, the US was the country that admitted the greatest number of refugees in the world. The projected numerical ceiling of refugee intake for 2016 was 85,000.

These young people have a really tough job. Not only do they have to figure out the profession and the US medical system quickly, acquire professional interpreting skills and get a grip on human physiology that they do not necessarily know in their native language, they also have to bridge a cultural gap for their community so wide that not many would dare to try to do so.

There are other fascinating challenges that healthcare interpreters in refugee communities have to face on a daily basis. Some communities are so small and live so closely together that often a young male neighbour and family friend ends up interpreting for an older female neighbour or family friend. 52 should refuse such an appointment for the reason of familiarity with the patient — the patient’s confidentiality is under threat and this can result in a patient’s apprehension that their medical condition is now known to a family friend. The patient may not disclose all the details of their condition or they may not come back for the treatment. And what if the patient is suffering from an ailment, let’s say a form of mental disorder, that is stigmatised in their culture? In this case the patient could even insist there is nothing wrong with them at all and that they made a mistake in coming to see a doctor. This patent will not be upfront about their symptoms and it will be difficult for a doctor to diagnose their condition.

The immigrants’ rights as "limited English language users" are protected by several American laws, such as Title VI of the 1964 Civil Right Act (section 601) and various other incentives in the healthcare industry, such as Standards for Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services, and certifications. The Civil Rights Act, namely, states, “SEC. 601. No person in the United States shall, on the ground of race, color, or national origin, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”5 This means that if a US institution receives government money for any of its programs or functions, they cannot have rules or regulations that put certain categories of people in a disadvantaged position, where the services

An interpreter in a tightly knit ethnic community finds himself or herself in a delicate situation where they have to balance the law of the land with the customs of their community for patient’s benefit.

There is another side to this problem that can potentially breach confidentiality. The mandate to preserve a patient’s confidentiality is absolute in the American healthcare system. There is a special law concerning it called the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, or HIPAA. This law mandates that a patient’s healthcare information remains under the patient’s control. It provides data privacy and security provisions for safeguarding medical information. For example, doctors and interpreters are not allowed to share any diagnosis with the patients’ immediate family without the patient’s oral or signed consent that allows the sharing of this information with specific persons, such as the patient’s child or spouse.

Ironically, this law goes against how things work in many traditional cultures. There, the survival of an individual often depends on his or her community knowing about their ailment. How can they help if they don’t know about the disease? In the US it is up to the patient whether they want to share this information or not. An interpreter in a tightly knit ethnic community finds himself or herself in a delicate situation where they have to balance the law of the land with the customs of their community for patient’s benefit.

Furthermore, many refugees come to the US after having experienced unspeakable horrors. Many refugees, including adults but more particularly children, require special mental health services.

Mental health interpreting is a separate, highly challenging specialisation in healthcare interpreting that is still understudied and underserved. Mental health interpreting requires an understanding of what the doctor is trying to do, so collaboration between the doctor and the interpreter is required.

A continuous assignment of the same interpreter to any given patient is required because of the trust which is necessary between the patient and the interpreter-doctor team.6 This does not necessarily mean that the doctor is aware of the need for this collaboration. Doctors have to be educated about the subtleties of health interpreting as much as the interpreters themselves.

The US Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Minority Health, a federal governmental organisation, also has regulations for inclusive and adequate medical care by creating program National Plan of Action to reduce health disparities between racial and ethnic minorities and by instituting Standards for Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services. These standards are “intended to advance health equity, improve quality, and help eliminate health care disparities by providing a blueprint for individuals and health care organisations to implement culturally and linguistically appropriate services.”7

An interpreter is the one who understands the doctor’s need to communicate with the patient straightforwardly and openly, and the patient’s limitations, sentiments and apprehensions.

Because mental health evaluation is often verbal and long (90 minutes), highly developed interpreting skills are crucial, and sheer physical endurance is a must. The emotional pressure of working with patients who have experienced terrible things and who eventually share these experiences with the psychiatrist is extremely taxing and requires professionalism, compassion and a significant aptitude for emotional endurance.8 Not all medical interpreters can sustain such pressure.

It is in our human nature to be helpful, particularly if you are already working in the capacity of a helper, a facilitator of communication, and the person who needs help is unwell and helpless. Patients who come to the US from elsewhere are helpless in many ways. First of all, they need medical help; then they are unable to communicate; then it is likely they will come from a culture that is very different from the culture of the US and this means that they self-impose the restrictions of their own culture related to social hierarchy, wealth, and gender. For example, in some cultures women and children may not be able to say anything until being asked. This means they will not answer any questions voluntarily and the doctors will get only the information they have thought to ask about. Foreign medical culture and modern technologies can also be alienating and, frankly, scary for them. All these factors can impede communication between the patient and the doctor.

In some cultures, even harmless chitchatting can create problems by allowing the patient to mistake their interpreter for a friend, who now has near familial obligations to help them and advocate for them.

An interpreter is the one who understands the doctor’s need to communicate with the patient straightforwardly and openly, and the patient’s limitations, sentiments and apprehensions. Because the interpreter is in the position of facilitator, in many cases the interpreter is tempted to assume a role that does not belong to him or her; in a word, the interpreter is tempted to become too helpful. Many an interpreter has made the mistake of giving their phone number to the patient, or carrying the patient’s baby, or giving them a ride home, or anticipating the patient’s questions by explaining something instead of letting the patient speak and clarify their own needs, or defending the patient’s rights or sensibilities in the middle of an appointment.

Excessive familiarity may allow the patient to lay a claim on their interpreter’s loyalty and this causes problems because what a foreign-born patient wants and needs in accordance with their own cultural sensibilities and experience may gravely disagree with interpreters’ professional rules of conduct and ethical principles.

For example, patients can tell an interpreter things about themselves, such as, “I’m not going to take this stupid medicine,” or “My husband beats me,” and in the same breath ask the interpreter not to tell this to the doctor. IMIA and NCHI ethics require that all communication facilitated by a healthcare interpreter remains transparent. Interpreters simply cannot not interpret what the patients tell them in confidence in the doctor’s office. What do you suppose the patient in the scenario above will think about the interpreter whom he or she thought of as a brother and with whom the information was shared in confidence? How do you think it’s going to affect the doctor’s visit? Well-trained interpreters know how to avoid this and similar situations. They conduct themselves with patients in such a way that the patients understand the rule of transparency during the visit and the fact that their interpreter is a professional on the job, not their buddy.

Many an interpreter has been tempted to clarify medical information, for example, a medical procedure with which the patient is not familiar, or even give medical advice or a social services consultation. For example, it would be easy for an interpreter to explain what an ultrasound or cardiogram procedures is, or share their opinion on how well certain medicine works, or help the

However, trained interpreters know that they are neither a doctor, nurse, social worker, nor a personal friend. Therefore, they are not allowed to jump in and fill the gaps by imparting seemingly relevant information or offering services that have nothing to do with language services. This is both for the patient’s and interpreter’s protection. What interpreters are allowed to do is to ask the relevant professional to clarify, to explain, to repeat, or to provide adequate services.

From technical interpreting skills to medical knowledge and the mastery of medical terminology, to diplomatic navigation of cultural subtleties, to emotional endurance, to professional conduct, healthcare interpreters stand out as serving members of their communities, not professionals who are just making a living. One may only hope that community members understand this and appreciate their interpreters accordingly, even if US medical institutions do not entirely do so.

Sometimes one can get into a funny situation. It is extremely interesting to know from a person who has experienced it many times herself.

My current experience of consecutive interpreting for high-rank officials showcases the following: the key contact agent at such events (for the translator) is the head of the protocol department of the corresponding institution. Or the personal assistant.

Both, if and when present and available, are very likely to make life easier for the interpreter; also, it is in their power to wreak havoc on him. Let me share briefly what my coordination with these people was like.

The most essential thing I have learned about the protocol priests so far: their job is WAY more stressful than ours is.

The protocol people have to perform a lot more tasks per unit time and keep track of quite an array of

Але хоча б приблизний сценарій зазвичай затверджують, тому не може бути, щоби протоколісту зовсім нічим було поділитися з перекладачем. Не мені вам розповідати, як важливо мати під рукою список імен, регалій та посад, хай навіть він буде й неповним. Проте найголовніше для перекладача на урочистих заходах — не покладатися повністю на службу протоколу та технічну службу й бути готовим до будь-яких несподіванок. Треба мати сміливість діяти, за потреби, не за сценарієм. Наприклад, одного разу охорона категорично відмовлялася пускати мене у двері залу, де мав за п’ять хвилин виступати міністр оборони та голова РНБО, а я мала послідовно перекладати зі сцени для іноземних гостей. Дотелефонуватися до протоколіста не вдалося. Активно рватися повз охорону, наче на відкриття модної виставки без черги, не варто, а спокійно, не панікуючи, сказати, що такий-от високопосадовець очікує на свого перекладача — варто. У будь-якому

processes and duty-holders, because anybody’s fuckup is automatically a protocol fuckup as well.

Thus, don’t count on any additional attention, let alone recognition of or deference towards your work (yours is, beyond all doubt, also difficult and responsible). Just take it easy, the protocol department might act a little rough at times: this is due solely to distracted attention and general fatigue. After all, the ceremonies and events are over, at the celebrations you will, most likely, have the chance to discover these people from an entirely different angle: they are warm, interesting, with a good sense of humour and many off the record stories. I mean way off the record.

Even more important for the interpreter at such events is not to rely entirely on the protocol and administrative departments and be ready for emergencies and surprises.

You need to have the courage to get off the beaten track.

The main thing you can — and should! — demand from them the day before is the game plan: the scenario, draft or blueprint of the upcoming event.

Of course, no one can guarantee that the version you get is the final one; changes can be made at any stage, sometimes on the go, during performances and speeches. However, at least a preliminary scenario is always discussed and approved; there is no such thing as “the protocol service cannot help the interpreter at all”. You know better than I do how important it is to have at your disposal the name list, with all the corresponding positions, notes and regalia, even if it is incomplete.

Even more important for the interpreter at such events is not to rely entirely on the protocol and administrative departments and be ready for emergencies and surprises. For instance, once the security officers utterly refused to let me into the hall where the Minister of Defence and the Chairman of the National Security and Defence Council were supposed to speak in five minutes (with my consecutive interpreting, on stage, for the foreign guests to hear). The protocol contact person didn’t pick up her phone. It would be absurd to try to take this fortress by storm, as if I were a desperate art aficionado at a fancy gallery opening. The best strategy is to tell the security, calmly, with dignity

Anyway, if this strategy fails, you can always blame the protocol guys (joking).

Whatever you hear before the actual work begins, keep track of what is going on around you at every moment in time; be constantly aware. Ukraine’s former President, Viktor Yushchenko, once asked me to spare the time and resort to chuchotage, but in ten minutes he made a pause and asked the participants of the meeting to switch to consecutive, because he got tired of the format. The Ambassador of Indonesia, before starting to speak, asked me at the stage to “present” him in my own words”. The Minister of regional development insisted gravely on the interpreter “taking off her jacket before going on stage”. He had a thing about the person standing next to him, you see: that person needed to wear a plain white shirt only. We had to explain that the fabric of the shirt is see-through, and the audience will definitely be distracted for all the wrong reasons, should we follow mister minister’s demand; this is not what he would have wanted for his speech. The deputy minister of education and science almost tripped over the carpet on the stairs on his way to the stage, and fell right into my arms (luckily, I was walking behind, just close enough to catch him). I still have no idea how I kept my balance with 220 pounds

When do the London police need an interpreter?

An interpreter is required by the police when someone with less than adequate English is arrested under suspicion of involvement in an offence and that person needs to be interviewed. Interpreters are also required to assist in taking statements from witnesses and victims of crimes who cannot express themselves fully in English.

Who are your clients, police or the suspect?

The client is the police force you are working with because it is the police who have contracted you to act as an interpreter and it is from the police budget that you are remunerated for this work. However, the interpreter is independent of the police and must act in a wholly impartial way when performing his/her duties. The interpreter is in fact working neither for the police nor for the defendant, but simply facilitating meaningful communication between the two parties.

In the UK the path to the professional interpreting in a legal setting is through passing exams with the Institute of Linguists Educational Trust (IoLET) and obtaining a Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (DPSI) in law option, or a Diploma in Police Interpreting (DPI). (Hlavac, 2013).1 What kinds of crime do you deal with most of the time?

Over a period of time any police interpreter will have experience of working with a wide variety of crimes, from the relatively minor, such as shoplifting, to Mayfield, K. (2016). very serious offences like rape and murder. Perhaps the offences which seem most to recur however are those of minor to more serious assaults, particularly assaults occurring in the domestic realm between couples.

Can you always be objective and unemotional doing your job?

Of course, that is precisely what is required of an effective police interpreter. We are often working under stressful and emotionally charged circumstances, dealing sometimes with very upset and even volatile or mentally ill people.

It is therefore of paramount importance, both for the effectiveness of a police enquiry and for the emotional wellbeing of the interpreter, that objectivity and emotional distance are maintained in the carrying out of one's duty. I feel I am able to do this well enough by concentrating on the words being spoken rather than the events or emotions to which they might refer.

It is worth mentioning that all cases, even the seemingly minor, simple ones, have elements of interest. I am interested in every case in which I am involved because a case will always involve people,

64 personalities, and that is something which I think I will never tire of. Police interpreting, as well as providing an income, can, if the interpreter is paying proper attention, also give one a rich education and valuable life lessons.

I am interested in every case in which I am involved because a case will always involve people, personalities, and that is something which I think I will never tire of.

Interpreters’ professional bodies have developed ethical guidelines for interpreters, all based on similar principles:2 competence, accuracy, truthfulness, impartiality, confidentiality, integrity, respect and professionalism. However, the codes are not strictly prescriptive and can be described as a general professional guidance. Nevertheless, the principle of interpreters’ impartiality or neutrality is emphasised in all these codes. In legal interpreting, and in the context of investigative interviewing specifically, interpreters’ impartiality becomes paramount for securing justice. For this reason, interpreters declare their impartiality at the beginning of the assignment, strive to be as unobtrusive as possible, speak in the first grammatical person, and do not offer their personal opinion or advice, aiming at highest level of accuracy in conveying each utterance from one language to another (Goodman-Delahunty et al., 2015). Тому перекладач оголошує про свою неупередженість на початку роботи, про тверді наміри не впливати на зміст, говорити від першої особи однини й не висловлювати особистої думки, не надавати порад, і намагатися якомога точніше передати зміст кожного висловлювання під час перекладу з однієї мови іншою (Goodman-Delahunty et al., 2015). The style is rarely confrontational and never, in my experience, aggressive. What police officers are trained to do is pick up on inconsistencies in a suspect's account, and the police will often not reveal all the information, or evidence, in their possession to the suspect and/or his legal representative.

What is the interrogation manner of the Metropolitan police?

As for the interrogation manner of Metropolitan police, I can say the following. First of all the questioning of a suspect is always called an interview, never an interrogation (although interestingly in Spanish it translates precisely into that, "interrogatorio", rather than "entrevista" for interview). The style is rarely confrontational and never, in my experience, aggressive. What police officers are trained to do is pick up on inconsistencies in a suspect's account, and the police will often not reveal all the information, or evidence, in their possession to the suspect and/or his legal representative. The information given to a legal representative before an interview is called disclosure, and will generally be the bare bones of the reasons and circumstances of a suspect's arrest. Suspects are often advised to give no comment interviews, particularly when a legal representative is not convinced that his client has much of a defence and/or he is not sure the police have, prior to the interview, revealed all the information they have. The reason for this is that he doesn't want the suspect to say anything that might incriminate him, as it is, after all, for the police to prove his involvement in the crime Mayfield, K. (2016). 66 he is being questioned about, not for the suspect to prove his innocence. Something that many people who have not had any involvement with the police and legal system fail to understand is that it is not the police who charge a suspect; that job falls to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), lawyers acting for the State who will base their decision as to whether there is sufficient evidence to proceed with a prosecution on the evidence presented to them by the police and their assessment of the likelihood of a prosecution resulting in a conviction. The role of the police is to investigate, not to prosecute. An important distinction. Another common misconception is that, in cases of assault, for example, it is the victim who presses charges. Again, this is never the case. A victim may well be a witness in a prosecution case, but it is the CPS which is prosecuting the offender.

A caravan moving through the sand dunes stretching as far as the eye can see, lazy camels, sleepy cameleers in white robes, and scorching desert sun. That is what comes to mind when we hear the word ‘nomad.’ Modern digital nomads look nothing like their predecessors. They are a new generation of independent people who combine remote work or online business and travel. Often, the only thing they have is a backpack that contains a laptop, a small camera, and a couple of T-shirts.

Digital nomads are not tourists. Neither are they adventurers nor vagabonds. They are quite well-off people who believe the world is their oyster. They spend some time in one place and then head off to another location on the globe. One month in Berlin, two weeks in Porto, three months in Phuket, one month in Istanbul and two seasons in Lviv — that is how the usual itinerary of a digital nomad might look.

So how can one earn money while travelling?

There are several options: you can work remotely in a company, become a freelancer or build your own online business. If your boss says you are not required to show up at the office to work, but continues to send you paychecks, you have hit the jackpot. If that is not the case, you may have to invest some effort and put your financial stability at risk to pursue your dream.

But where do they find time for this entire «work and travel» concept? If you work 9 to 5, you may already know that your job tends to occupy all the time you have scheduled for it. You may also know that it is almost impossible to work effectively for eight hours straight. The bad news is that this is how the entire world rolls. The good news is that an increasing number of people understand that more is not better. The Pareto law says that 80% of the results come from 20% of the efforts. This means that three hours of productive work during travel are more than enough to accomplish your daily tasks without the need to spend half of your life staring out of the office window in dismay. In fact, studies show that working a lot is harmful to your health. Money is a thing of the past. Time and freedom are the new attributes of rich people.

The experience of moving to a new country, not as a tourist but rather as a local is unparalleled.

Many believe that travel requires a lot of money; it is true and false at the same time. The less time you spend on a trip, the more money you need. A white collar worker can spend the same amount of money for a flight to an exotic country and allinclusive hotel during a two week vacation than a budget nomad during three months of travel. If you are a full-time traveller, sometimes you can avoid spending any money at all, like the guy who hitchhiked from Croatia to Australia and slept on the couches of strangers he met on his way. Such an adventure, however, is not for everybody. Usually, digital nomads stay in each country for several months and find an apartment for short-term rent.

Food prices in grocery stores all around the world are more or less the same. Nomads rarely buy clothes, household appliances and other things that are desirable for more comfort, so that is a huge money saver as well.

You can go to any country in the world, spend as much time there as you want, and do whatever you want. Having the choice to surf in Bali or lie on a beach in Thailand, go to an expedition to Africa or bike through Peruvian Andes can sound amazing.

But, as counterintuitive as it sounds, huge choice can easily make a person unhappy. This is how our brains work and we can do nothing about it. Also, the more stuff you carry with you, the harder it is for you to move around. Fitting all the things you own into a backpack means that a lot of sacrifices have to be made and you must truly embrace the minimalist philosophy.

Try to answer these simple questions: «Why do you want to become a digital nomad, and are you ready to challenge your entire lifestyle to do that?» But in the end, if you manage to overcome your fear of the unknown and decide to go on a lifelong journey, the world will see the birth of yet another free person.

Before quitting your job and spending all your savings on a fancy laptop and a one-way ticket to Sri Lanka you should understand that travel is not a silver bullet and a simple relocation to another country will not solve your problems.

You will just bring them with you to a new place. If you need an office, a manager, and a fixed schedule to be able to work effectively, then nomading might not be your thing. 74 When asked to describe my experience working as “a translator in South Africa”, I wondered whether I was truly qualified to respond. On the one hand, I am a born and bred South African working as a freelance translator and copywriter in Cape Town, so I would seem to match the profile. But on the other hand, I have spent nine years building my career in France, returning to my native country nearly three years ago with a well-established client base abroad, for which I continue to work every day. Wouldn’t the lack of South African clients detract from my credibility as a translator in South Africa — or is that a situation that applies to most freelance translators?

The nature of my work means that I was able to seamlessly transfer my business from France to South Africa, and my working methods are still exactly the same.

Well, working in the digital era means there is very little need to be located in the same region as your clients. And apart from the obvious advantage of being near my family, the lifestyle in Cape Town is very appealing. I live in Sea Point, along the Atlantic Seaboard. Some mornings I get up at 6 a.m. to finish a late-morning deadline. Once that is done, I can head out for a leisurely run along the Sea Point promenade, breathing in the invigorating ocean air, accompanied mainly by pram-pushing mothers,

didn’t know — sunshine was all I was used to!

Studying in Strasbourg, and working in Paris, I was initially overwhelmed by the extensive cultural activities, restaurants, shops, cinemas and musical concerts on offer, and hardly gave any thought to the sea, mountains or sunshine. The Christmas markets were magical. But over the years, I began to feel oppressed by the lack of space, polluted air and, generally, feeling like a foreigner (even after becoming a naturalised French citizen). And I must admit, the lack of sunshine was proving to be difficult.

But the grass is always greener: returning to South Africa, people here struggled to understand my decision: why would anyone leave Paris? Isn’t it the most beautiful city in the world? What about the lack of safety and political insecurity in South Africa? Surely you would have a better future in Europe? Granted, those issues were not my main concerns. I missed my home country and simply wanted to return to my roots.

In terms of working space, I left behind a happy setup in Paris: living in a 30m2 apartment in the Marais district, working from home was not ideal. I soon found office space that I shared with five journalists.

It was within cycling distance from my apartment (competing with buses and taxis for space on the road ensured I was wide awake when arriving at the office every morning). Shared office space is a great solution if you find working from home to be a lonely or cramped exercise.

But in Cape Town I’m quite happy to work from home. Here, I can afford a much bigger apartment with a separate study and balcony, so it never feels like the walls are closing in on me. And although some people may find the prospect to be lonely or monotonous, I think they fail to take into account the amount of work going on inside a translator’s head: there’s little time to feel lonely when you’re agonising over a turn of phrase or consumed in researching a new topic.

Життя у тіні – Life in Shadow I have discovered, however, that having family nearby comes with its own challenges, especially being the only freelance translator among a group of lawyers who need to appear in court or clock in at the office: whenever the dog needs to be taken to the vet urgently, or someone is having car trouble, or some errand needs tending to, my schedule is always understood to be the most flexible one! It’s not always easy to explain that my deadlines are not mere formalities.

The best thing about my work is that I have two homes, two cultures. I return to Paris about three times a year, always with great excitement.

One of my clients is a French bank based in La Défense, and I spend February and March every year working on-site on the translation of their Registration Document (an extensive report covering all aspects of the bank’s operations over the last year). Apart from financial translation, I do a lot of copywriting in a very different field… fashion.

This requires me to attend briefing sessions at the client’s offices every season (a leading French fashion house), when the new collection is presented. These opportunities to travel to Paris always feel like a holiday — I love being back in a French working environment, enjoying all the things I loved about the city, and catching up with old friends.

Isn’t that the essence of freelance translation, after all — broadening your horizons and shaping your own lifestyle?
