Dear Representaꬅve McElra韀,

There has been a great deal of discussion about SB 253 in Carteret County ‐ and a great deal of consternaꬅon about how we ended up with this "Resoluꬅon" in the first place. Since the bill is now in the NC House I would like to ask you to kill this bill in its current form. I have seen your responses to quesꬅons about this legislaꬅon ‐ staꬅng that you do not get involved in local issues and that you and Senator Sanderson are only doing the wishes of the people of Carteret County. I would respecꬅvely tell you that you are not doing our wishes.

I would like to draw to your aꬅenꬅon the e‐mail chain below ‐ which was part of a Freedom of Informaꬅon Request made to the Carteret County Commissioners a few weeks ago. I would ask that you pay parꬅcular aꬅenꬅon to the e‐mail from Chairman Mansfield dated December 9th in which he states: "Robin thinks now may be a good ꬅme to address this issue since the current elecꬅon cycle has ended." If this resoluꬅon is the "will of the people" why would these advocates of the bill not bring this up during the elecꬅon cycle? How could an issue as important as changing the elecꬅon of our school board members not be discussed in public? Why would this "Resoluꬅon" have to be added to the consent agenda with no public noꬅce if people approved of this move? WHY WAS IT NOT PUT TO A VOTE OF THE CITIZENS?

We both have been in poliꬅcs long enough to know that the only reason it was pushed through is the principles involved fear no poliꬅcal backlash for their acꬅons. You claim to be against "Big Government" but you, Senator Sanderson, and rest of the TEA Party sure are not afraid to use governmental power to enact a law that goes against the wishes of the ciꬅzens. If you thought you could win a vote, it would have been place on a referendum to begin with ‐ but you know it would never pass so you are taking the cowardly way out. SHAME ON YOU. SHAME ON ALL OF YOU.

This bill may very well pass the House and become law and I can promise you that if it does ‐ EVERYONE who has had a hand in this charade ‐ ALL of you are going to pay a price at the ballot box in your next elecꬅon. It is not too late to do the right thing and kill this bill or at the very least amend it to make it a referendum to be voted on by the ciꬅzens of Carteret County ‐ to say you are doing the will of the ciꬅzens is a lie. Yes the request from the County Commissioners was not illegal but it was done immorally and I would expect you to hold yourself to a higher moral standard than to pass this bill in its current form.
