Colonel Lee Ellis, CSP, USAF (Ret)

Leadership Symposium 2018

Keynote Speaker

Lee Ellis is Founder and President of Leadership Freedom® LLC and FreedomStar Media®. He is an award-winning author, leadership consultant, and expert presenter in the areas of leadership, teambuilding, and human performance. His past clients include Fortune 500 senior execu)ves and C-Level leaders in telecommunica)ons, healthcare, military, and other business sectors. Some of his media appearances include interviews on networks such as CNN, CBS This Morning, C-SPAN, ABC World News, Fox News Channel, plus hundreds of engagements in various industry sectors throughout the world.

Early in his career, Lee served as an Air Force fighter pilot flying fi[ythree combat missions over North Vietnam. In 1967, he was shot down and held as a POW for more than five years in Hanoi and surrounding camps. For his war)me service, he was awarded two Silver Stars, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star with Valor device, the Purple Heart, and POW Medal. Lee resumed his Air Force career, serving in leadership roles of increasing responsibility including command of a flying squadron and leadership development organiza)ons before re)ring as a colonel.

Lee has a BA in History and a MS in Counseling and Human Development.

He is a graduate of the Armed Forces Staff College and the Air War College. He has authored or co-authored four books on leadership and career development. Lee’s last book en)tled Leading with Honor®: Leadership Lessons from the Hanoi Hilton has received mul)ple awards since its release including Winner in the 2012 Interna)onal Book Awards in the Business and Management Category, and selec)on on the 2013 U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff Reading List. His latest book is en)tled Engage with Honor: Building a Culture of Courageous Accountability.

Lee and his wife Mary reside in the Atlanta GA area and have four grown children and six grandchildren.

Accountability for Everyone This session will focus on an overview of our Renaissance Learning ini)a)ve. All stakeholders (students, staff, and parents) benefit from the implementa)on of STAR 360, Accelerated Reader, and Accelerated Math 2.0. Learn how students can take ownership of their own learning, how staff can meet each student’s personalized learning needs, and how parents can monitor their child’s progress.

Technology IntegraKon for Administrators Administrators will learn the various levels of technology integra)on using the SAMR framework and how technology resources should be used by students as a learner tool.

Technology for Parents: Parent University Parent University is a plagorm that helps parents become a partner in their child’s educa)on through educa)onal online courses. It’s about what children are learning in school, developing healthy ahtudes and mo)va)on for success, the power of talk and play, building posi)ve family rela)onships, as well as healthy ea)ng op)ons and wellness resources.

How do we document accountability for Accelerated Reader 360 and Accelerated Math 2.0? Principals will iden)fy and interpret the metrics on dashboards and key reports associated with a successful Accelerated Reader 360 and Accelerated Math 2.0 implementa)on. They will review a checklist of behaviors that support a successful implementa)on to use as a guide for classroom walkthroughs and reflec)on.

Empowering Principals to Shape the Vision of Academic Success Presenter: Renaissance Learning Presenter Suite A

How can we empower principals to lead the Renaissance implementation to improve student achievement? Principals will gain clarity about district expectations for the Renaissance implementation. They will be able to generate reports and interpret campus achievement data through the lens of the Renaissance benchmarks and in relation to the Georgia Milestones Assessment System.

Moving from Data to Insight to Action Presenter: Renaissance Learning Presenter PLC 1

How can principals move teachers toward more effec)ve data-based decision making? Principals will review their role in establishing and suppor)ng data literacy on their campus. They will be able to navigate the Renaissance plagorm and in turn guide teachers to the Renaissance Mastery and Instruc)onal Planning reports and resources available to support the crea)on of instruc)on ac)on plans.

How can we set growth goals and use STAR to monitor and evaluate the effec)veness of our interven)ons? Principals will review their campus growth data and reflect on how curriculum and classroom prac)ces contributed to student growth. They will also learn how to set growth goals for students and how Star can be used for progress monitoring purposes to check for growth and the effec)veness of interven)ons.

How can we get parent support and involvement to support our partnership with Renaissance to drive student success? Principals will learn about Renaissance resources such as Home Connect and AR Bookfinder and how they can educate parents to use these resources to support prac)ce at home.

The AdvancED Engagement Review Team commended the Bibb County School District this year for our level of stakeholder engagement, and especially our use of the plagorm Let’s Talk! from K12 Insight to communicate with stakeholders. This session is for newcomers to Let’s Talk!

And for those who want to become more proficient in using the plagorm.

Learn communica)on )ps from K12 Insight, as well as how you can use Let’s Talk! to your advantage by sending out your own messages to stakeholders.

As part of this workshop, par)cipants will also receive handouts and informa)on on how to request media for your events, cra[ crisis communica)ons, and share your good news with stakeholders.

Do you want to learn how to navigate Georgia’s Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) plan to support College and Career Readiness for all students? This session focuses on the use of flexibility waivers and innova)ve approaches to create college and career readiness opportuni)es for all students. Also, par)cipants will learn how to navigate through the ESSA plan in order to connect the dots and feel empowered to leverage federal and state funds around iden)fied con)nuous improvement goals.

Leadership Symposium 2018 Breakout Sessions | Day 2 Finance: MUNIS 101 Presenters: Vicki Huleo and Elaine Wilson PLC 4

MUNIS has been the Bibb County School District’s accoun)ng so[ware since July 1, 2016. BCSD began using MUNIS for payroll in February 2017. This workshop is for new staff to learn how to use our system and for those who want to become more proficient in using the system.

This will be an interac)ve workshop so bring your laptop ready for hands on work. We will go through the procurement process star)ng with the crea)on of a requisi)on through the final product of payment for this requisi)on. You will learn how to look up individual account numbers and know how to drill down to see the actual invoice payment as well as running reports to monitor account balances, what purchase orders are outstanding and what requisi)ons have not been converted to purchase orders. We will be looking at QBE and grant funds as well as student ac)vity funds at the school level. When you leave this workshop, you will have a “How To” manual along with contact informa)on for accoun)ng and procurement department personnel.

Human Resources: Managing Employee A]endance Presenter: Paige Busbee PLC 3

Teacher absences is a leading indicator of student achievement and is directly related to school climate. This workshop will explore the causes and cost of absenteeism, personal leave, personal leave on designated cri)cal days, effec)ve documenta)on of poor aoendance, the FMLA process, and how to navigate FMLA to reduce the impact on the school’s mission and climate. Par)cipants will leave the workshop equipped to educate teachers on leave, leave policy, and procedures.

Principals will be confident in addressing chronic employee tardiness and frequent absenteeism.

Legal: Policies and RegulaKons Presenter: Randy Howard PLC 5

The Legal Department of Bibb County School District (District) oversees all legal maoers involving the Board of Educa)on and the District. With respect to the day-to-day opera)ons of the school system, the Legal Department is responsible for ensuring that our policies and regula)ons are current and in compliance with the federal, state and local law. The workshop is for all district personnel who desire a beoer understanding of the importance of policies and regula)ons, and how the policies and regula)ons govern the daily opera)ons of the school system. The workshop will primarily address recent policies approved by the since January of 2018 up to the present, and regula)ons pertaining to how policies will be implemented. The workshop will be conducted by the Chief Legal Counsel of the Legal Department.

OperaKons: OperaKonal Excellence: Lessons on Leadership, Teamwork and Strategy ExecuKon Presenter: Keith Simmons Suite D

A great deal of )me and energy has been invested into the development of your con)nuous improvement plan. However, even the strongest strategic plans fail to yield desired results in the absence of a quality opera)onal plan to guide implementa)on. In this session, par)cipants will learn how to ensure that everyone in the organiza)on understands their role in suppor)ng the strategic plan.

Session par)cipants will also learn how to build a founda)on for accountability, collabora)on, and execu)on across the organiza)on.

In education, it appears that we are seeing more and more kids with mental health issues. In this session we are going to discuss some reasons behind this, what research says happens with brain development of adolescents who have experienced trauma and strategies that we may use as administrators when dealing with these students.

This hands-on workshop is designed for administrators to learn how to effec)vely use Simbli for leadership team mee)ng agendas, materials, and minutes. Aoendees will learn how to create mee)ng agendas, upload mee)ng documents, link BOE policies to agendas, create mee)ng minutes, )e the mee)ngs to their con)nuous improvement plans in Simbli, take effec)ve mee)ng minutes as well as use Simbli’s Knowledge Base feature. The goal is for aoendees to create sample agendas and minutes to use for future mee)ngs during the school year.

Aoendees will need to have a Simbli login and laptop for this workshop.

Teaching & Learning: Get Better Faster … The Coaching Never Ends Presenter: Dr. Tanzy Kilcrease PLC 1

In an era of teacher shortage, it is impera)ve that we coach our novice teachers to accelerate their effec)veness to guarantee they receive the support necessary to remain in the profession. The Bibb County School District has implemented the “Get Beoer Faster 90 Day Plan” as a method to coach new teachers. The en)re process is built on the premise that with inten)onality and foresight, schools can assist teachers to be high func)oning within 90 days. This session will demonstrate how school instruc)onal leaders can schedule weekly observa)ons and feedback sessions to provide high leverage, bite-sized, observable ac)on steps as feedback to improve teachers’ instruc)onal prac)ces.

Par)cipants will receive helpful resources to beoer understand a guide that contains ac)on steps proven to change teacher prac)ce and to establish teacher efficacy. The implementa)on of “Get Beoer Faster” has improved administrators, instruc)onal coaches and teachers leaders’ coaching skills and has enhanced their knowledge of the skills needed to facilitate a rigorous and well-managed classroom.

This coaching model will retain teachers and enhance the instruc)onal leadership skills of building leaders.
