Summary Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd (RINL) is undertaking the expansion of the Vizag Steel Plant project in Andhra Pradesh, India. The project involves the expansion of a steel plant from the existing 6.3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 12MTPA capacity and being developed in three phases. The first phase of the project includes the construction of a Hot Rolled (HR) Coil mill, while the second and third phases includes the construction of a silicon mill and a cold-rolled mill respectively. The project also includes the construction of a water storage reservoir, modernization, and upgrade of the health of existing units such as blast furnaces 1 and 2, converter shops, Steel Melting Shop-1, strand combi-caster, sinter plants 1 and 2 to reach 7.3MPTA. RINL has submitted a feasibility report to increase the capacity of the plant. In July 2016, RINL submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) for approval to revamp the capacity of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) from the existing 6.3MPTA to 7.3MPTA.
In August 2016, L&T Construction was awarded a contract for the construction of water storage reservoir. The scope of the contract includes construction of an additional Balancing Reservoir of 12.32 millionm3 storage capacities and erection of associated structures which will meet the water requirements and ensure uninterrupted production from the Vizag Steel plant, taking care of its expansion plans, too.
