EXPOSITION PAVILLION In my 2nd year, we were tasked with designing the Achitecture Institute’s Art Exposition Pavillion. My design, as per my line of thought, was greatly influenced by Fundamentalism. Base colours, forms and materials.

SEA FRONT GARDEN

In order to master designing on unlevel and steep terrain our carriculum required that we design a garden/park. We were given the excercise on a piece of A4 paper with all topographical data on it. We first had to come up with our designs the analogue way then further export all the data and create a digital version at well. My concept of this design as you can see the zipper resemble how it opens up the belly of the earth to reveal one of the most precious of elements in her, ‘WATER’ The rest my is my signature touch in the use of pure geometry. The actual site to this project is located in Algiers, Algeria overlooking the Mediterranean.

MULTIMEDIA LIBRARY In my final year I chose the Multimedia Library/Mediatheque amoung the options that we were given. Located in the heart of Ouled Yaich, Blida, Algeria this Library was to rejuvenate and engender a culture of pursuing knowledge mainly within the youths of the area. With the socio-economic situation in Algeria, the youths, especially those from a fairly undeveloped region like Blida, had been brought up without a yearning for education considering education was actually free on all levels.

To change the perception towards education of the youths in the area, I decided to totally break the trend of conservationism in Ouled Yaich. By going ‘High Tech’ I aimed at breaking the stereotype of the ‘traditional library’ to introduce the deserved ‘cutting edge’ association to the modern library. I hoped this would excite the youths to view the library as a ‘go to’ area rather than the ‘place for nerds’ traditional perception. The Concept is a simple abstract representation of how the traditional forms of media were stored. For example, books in a shelf slightly tilted as if they are being withdrawn. The same could be said for CD cases or Vinyl records etc. The red overhang form connecting the 3 volumes represents the modern ‘Digital Wave’ that has sucked up the roles of all the other forms of media storage.

NATIONAL HOUSING When I joined the Ministry of Local Government Public Works & National Housing a new housing scheme was launched and I was granted the privilege to be part of the design team that worked on the numerous housing projects. This particular group of flats is located in Prospect, Harare, Zimbabwe. These flats were targeted at medium range earners with an average size family.

I was also tasked with the Master Plan lay-out and coordination. All graphic post processing for presentations were my responsibility. Due to restrictions in government procedures and security measures, I cannot get into much detail and I have also omitted other features of the design. Nevertheless, to keep the overall costs at a bare minimum, the aesthetics on this design was sacrificed. .

BORDER CONTROL This was part of the Redevelopment of the Ports of Entry of Zimbabwe Project. I was part of a team of 5 Architects governed by 4 Chief Architects and all that is presented here was my contribution; the Border Control & the Master plan. The brief requested a structure to house 3 teams of the Security & Control Department at the Zimbabwe - South Africa port of entry. Due to the high level of security profiling that this project falls under, I had to leave out/alter certain elements of the design.

MEZZANINE

N The desıgn concept ıs centred on the fıgure 3 that I derived from the 3 layers of security to be housed in the building. This naturally resonates with the triangular forms found throughout the design. It further aligns well with the Shona people ‘Chevron’ pattern and the Ndebele people’s cultural triangular geometry. All seemed to fall into place with this concept as I further stretched things and made it interesting by fitting Metatron’s Cube on the walls.

BEITBRIDGE SOLAR BRIDGE This was also part of the Redevelopment of the Ports of Entry of Zimbabwe Project. This was one of my contributions, ‘The Solar Bridge’. A new bridge was required separating freight traffic and to linking the Freight Terminals on either side of the border thus reducing congestion. It was further decided to incorporate a solar system on the bridge, making it a Solar Bridge to add power to the grid at the border. The 2 parabolas ‘leaning’ against each other came from the notion that the two countries have had each other’s support from the time of Apartheid in South Africato the current economic crisis in Zimbabwe.
