ENEMY TO FRIEND The prisoner of war’s breath was very hoarse and I think I can hear his stomach rumbling

A crucial battle had just finished; we just eliminated an army of the Republic of China, brutally. There were a dozen of people after the battle that were lined up in a straight line. We have to take care of them left after the battle. By the time that the sun set my superior assigned me to take care one of the prisoner of war since, I was a medic, so I get to take care a one of them that was also a medic. IV

“Hey, you sure you don’t want to eat?” as I pointing to the cold, hard buns that I just took minutes ago. “…” “You do know that we are the good side?” “…” “You know what? Lights out, time to sleep.” The prisoner of war’s breath was very hoarse and I think I can hear his stomach rumbling. Sun rises and the birds are singing. I shake the prisoner up so I get to have time to show and introduce him around, just doing what I was commanded to do. As the prisoner starts rubbing his eyes, my friends had came out of their places. The prisoner sits up and stares blankly. “Come on, let’s go and get our brunch.” as I urge him. “…” Slowly we opened the door, the cold, fresh air rushed into us; hard soil with snow on top of it was under our feet and little whiff comes out the houses. Then we walk toward the place that serves out the buns. “Hey, that’s the headquarter and that’s the storage chamber.” Pointing toward both two places. At that moment, I feel like talking toward a block of wall, it just feels so frustrating. The prisoner and me lined up for the brunch, his faces’ colour is pale and his breath is hoarsening.

Qi Zhong Soldiers use a strange look at the prisoner like something strange is happening; like I am bringing a pet or an animal that they never seen before. Finally, when we got our brunch, I bring the prisoner back to the camp so he can eat slowly. The most amazing thing happens and the prisoner finally starts talking. “My name is Ji Xian Li” That moment feels like being ambushed, a surprise. I was so excited that he finally starts talking. Still, I am worried about his health condition. So I told him to eat first then talk. Later on, I quickly asked him more things, and he answered them one by one. “Where are you from?” “Dong Bei, Shang hai Guan” “Do you have any brothers or sisters?” “Yeah, I got a few siblings.” “Why do you join the army?” “I thought that the nationalist was the right army to choose.” “Let me tell you something about revolution: it is only when the civilians think it is good, then it is good. They like People’s Republic of China so we are the good side. Here let me show you.” Then I look him to the town and everyone smiled at us and they were all very enthusiast when they saw us. Say a lot of kinds things like “Do you want to come to my house for dinner?” He was very nervous and later on at night, when we go off and go off and go to people’s house to eat. He isn’t use to this so we just took some food and go back to the dark, little shelter. He said he isn’t use to this since that they would actually bring food themselves. I just stay with him and talk him through. Few days later, he started to think like how we think. Another few days later, he became he starting to wearing the same hat, the same cloth, same pair of shoes and stand with us in a straight line.

Afterword 1945, China’s communist and nationalist had started the Second Chinese civil war. At the end of the war, 2.8million prisoner of war has been estimated. By the time 1949, there was about 70%-80% in the army of People’s Republic of China were from the Nationalist army as prisoner of war. The war has ended by the Communist party took over the mainland of China and the nationalist took over Taiwan which was happened at 1950, April.

The war didn’t start off very good for the communists but by the time 1947, the communist had starting to strike back towards the nationalists. And by the fall of 1948, the communists had started to getting control of Dong Bei, Hua Bei and Hua Dong which had become the three great battle throughout the Chinese Civil War and because that the communist had won the battles, it made the nationalist having the casualty of around 150 thousand soldiers.

Even though that the war has already end for a very long time, the situation between China and Taiwan is still very intense for example the Taiwan Strait missile crisis.
