This thesis project is based on Dr. Michel Cabanac studies on the ontology of pleasure. One such driver os physical pleasure is alliesthesia, defined as a change between two sensations. This proposed train station harnesses the rhythmanalysis of indoor vs. outdoor, hot vs. cold, standing vs. walking, and other opposite thermal conditions that so often occur in the ritual of public transit. The site is located in Jackson Heights, Queens, and is based on the proposed Triboro Train, utilizing an abandoned rail track that would, for the first time, connect Bronx, Queens, and Brooklyn. The goal is to create pleasure from highlighting dynamic transient temperatures rather than static comfort. By having multiple zones of different heating and cooling intensity, we can allow those merchants to find a temporarily comfort zone while allowing the transient user to use the space to generate pleasure. This project is based on Henri Lefebvre’s Marxist Humanism treatise “Towards an Architecture of Pleasure”.
