Amongst the surrounding tower typology of urban highrise architecture, the built form positively responds to the site’s slender constraints. The incredibly small and narrow footprint enables the building to achieve views from signifcant heights without imposing on the streetscape or the neighboring buildings in either bulk or shadow. In collaboration with Gary Emery, a ribbon graphic was integrated into the design to create a building that is highly recognizable.

The extension takes inspiration from the traditional massing and building proportions of the district’s history. Principles of symmetry and balance have been applied, establishing key axes that emphasize the old and integrate the new. The result is a new massing that sits in harmony with the traditional style, while providing the necessary upgrades to meet modern living standards.

Taking advantage of the panoramic views of the Melbourne city skyline, the proposed design reconceptualized the interior spaces. Interior walls were removed to create a more logical and larger open-plan living with a study alcove. An island bench was added to complement the existing kitchen layout.
The materials palette consists of rustic oak foor, granite stone bench tops, and patterned porcelain tiles against clean white walls. The central platform is the design solution to a rising.
