What is the

La Salle Core Value?

The preamble of the Foundational Principles of Lasallian Formation articulates the core values of Lasallian identity. The values of faith, zeal for service, and communion, taken together as dimensions of one spirit, capture an important dynamism that goes back to the time of the Founder and his first associates. It is this same dynamism that has given rise to the countless apostolic initiatives and innovations that have since grown out of St. John Baptist de La Salle’s initial response to the call of God discerned in the needs of poor and abandoned youth. Taken as one spirit, the spirit of faith, zeal and communion provide a paradigm for living the Lasallian story today.

These are intended to stimulate apostolic creativity, not to restrict it.

The intention of the members of the three committees tasked was to provide a starting point for discernment regarding the way the Lasallian charism and mission are to be incarnated in Philippine society today. They are intended to provide principles and parameters rather than specific answers and solutions. It is the task of individuals and institutions using these values to find ways in which to develop their own contextualized way of living out the Lasallian story in creative fidelity to the principles articulated herein.

The spirit of faith flows from a relationship of communion with the Triune God who wills to save all people by drawing them into a lifegiving communion with him and with one another in the Lasallian tradition, the spirit of faith is a spirit that allows one to:

TRUST: This one is a bit obvious, but sometimes the hardest to execute. We must trust Him in all things.

It’s commanded in Proverbs 3:5, but here we see Jesus commanding it again. Have faith in God, have complete trust and complete confidence. If we have faith in God feelings of worry, stress, anxiety, fear, and doubt should never surface. If we have faith in God, then we completely trust that He will provide all provision needed. Not only do we trust Him to provide provision, but we are completely confident that He will provide us with an abundant life as well!

PRAY: Like you mean it! Pray like God is in the room sitting right beside you. Mark 11:23 instructs us to pray without doubt in our hearts, and believe that what we say will happen. In the same verse Jesus says that if we do this, it will be done for us.

It’s okay to lift up our every need to God. It’s okay to give Him every single one of our burdens, worries, and fears. It’s okay to ask God to intervene in our lives, and ask Him for the provisions we need. He wants to hear our voices, and He wants a personal relationship with each and everyone of us.

READ SCRIPTURES: We must know the Word of God! We must make time to sit down and curl up with our Bibles. We need His Word inside, in our minds and in our hearts. Knowing God’s Word goes hand in hand with trusting God and praying. Read His promises, and then have great faith in God, that they will come to pass. Pray them over your life. In God’s Word we will find strength, hope, love, peace, and joy. We will also find promises of provision, and instructions to keep us away from sin and rebuke the devil. We will gain wisdom, knowledge, and understanding in our lives through His instructions.

LIVE OUT HIS WORD: We’ve done all that reading, studying, and note taking, now it’s time to start using our knowledge. Applying the Word of God to the lives we live, will deepen our walk with Him and strengthen our faith.

BE THE LIGHT: You are the light of the world, so shine bright my darling friend. We are to be loving and caring towards each other. We are to be encouraging, and build one another up. We should be joyful people, who don’t spend our days complaining.

What is

zeal of service

Zeal is the active expression of faith in gospel witness and service. It is oriented towards the integral salvation of persons, particularly the poor and the excluded. Zeal is the enthusiastic and total gift of self for the sake of the mission expressed in such qualities as gratuity and generosity, creativity and fortitude, compassion and commitment. It involves a preferential concern for the poor and the vulnerable. The desire to be of greater service to others conditions the quest for excellence and continuous self-improvement.

It is a whole hearted giving of oneself to the service of others, in gratuity and generosity, in creativity and fortitude, in compassion and commitment.

ZEAL OF SERVICE 1

CHANGE YOUR POSITION: We can serve others well when we actively decide to take on the role of a servant. This seems obvious, but missing this step can lead to doing more harm than good. When we study the life of Jesus, we find countless examples where he took on the role of the servant. From choosing to wash the feet of his disciples to the very decision of coming to earth and living as an ordinary human, Christ continually humbled himself for the sake of others and switched places with people in the lowliest of positions.

TAKE TIME TO LISTEN: It’s easy to assume we know what’s best for others and to simply give them that material thing. But, if we seek to serve others well, the best thing we can do is take the time to get to know people and honor them with a listening ear. If we skip this step, we make it a lot more about the good feeling we get from helping than we do about actually serving someone else.

CARE: When we listen to others, their needs might surprise us. By simply making the statement, “Let me know how I can help,” we’re opening ourselves up to a world of needs, not just the ones that are convenient or fit nicely into the time we’ve allotted to help. This often requires us to drop our own agendas, and it may cause us to serve in ways that stretch us beyond simply where we see ourselves “gifted.”.

RECOGNIZE: When we’ve listened to the full magnitude of someone’s brokenness, it can often be incredibly discouraging. We all have a natural inclination to want to either fix everything or create distance from what we can’t fix. But when we seek to serve others in light of how Christ served us, we can take comfort in knowing we are rarely the whole solution, that we may be one small part of a much grander plan, and that’s okay.

ALLOW YOURSELF TO BE SERVED: When we allow ourselves to be influenced and changed by the people we seek to serve, we create avenues for mutual respect and, ultimately, mutual change. In the same way, allowing yourself to be served (accepting a meal or coffee, or letting someone pray for you) is often an incredibly meaningful way to serve someone else. It levels the playing field and communicates to the person you’re serving that they have value, that they matter.

Communion in Mission

Communion recalls the dynamic of association by which the first Brothers bonded together for the sake of the particular mission entrusted to them by God. Communion has four dimensions. As a relationship with God, it is the source of all mission and ministry; as a way of accomplishing mission, it suggests the solidarity and collaboration that comes from sharing in one vision, one spirit and one mission; as a way of relating to others, it suggests openness to all persons and the desire to be brother or sister to all especially those in need; as a goal of mission, it suggests the unity that comes through reconciliation between God, human beings and creation.

How to uphold

Communion in Mission 1 2

Most of us have taken Communion at some time in our lives, and yet, the practice of Communion as a spiritual ordinance and time of reconciliation to God is often overlooked. When taking Communion becomes an occasional chore, we have missed the point. On the opposite end of the spectrum, when taking Communion is viewed as a means of salvation, we have also misunderstood its purpose in our lives.

As Christians, we are disciples or followers of Christ.

In the Gospels, Jesus told his disciples to take Communion in remembrance of him. Therefore, we receive Communion because Jesus told us to. In the early church, Christians practiced Communion regularly in their homes meeting together to break bread and drink wine in remembrance of their Savior. Today, however, the idea of taking Communion outside of the walls of a church feels foreign to some. It shouldn’t. Matthew 18:20 tells us, “For where two or three gather in my name, there I am with them.”
