As. Oy Samoan Fale, Jätkäsaari, Helsinki (INARO): The building located in Jätkäsaari, Helsinki consists of

housing 4420,0 m2 and commercial space 356,0 m2. The developer is Rakennusteho Oy. The building mass is divided into parts which are connected in the facade by zones of garden rooms. As part of the project, INARO has carried out a study on the possibilities of multisensory and universal design in residential construction, and the results of the study have been taken into account in the design. Im working as a project architect in the projects master and construction drawing phase.

Malminkartano residential quarters, Helsinki (INARO): Old dispersed campus area is transformed into a communal and climate-friendly neighbourhood. A detail plan design comissioned by the land owner AEL and the city of Helsinki as a result of a winning entry of an invited competiton. The sub phase of the project for me was to produce material for calculating the costs for the detail planning by examining and modelling the layout of the chosen example quarter. Pööli, Parking and office spaces, Hämeenlinna (INARO) : The building consists of four interconnected masses, which makes the large parking facility seem more humane in size. The perforated Corten cassettes façade is alive in both its

exterior and interior architecture and gives its viewer a variety of experiences as lights and shadows change according to the times of day and season. My part in the project was to carry on the contruction phase and the layout design for the office spaces as a project architect. Click here for more information about the project.

Rullakkotori square and community centre (INARO): The main objective of the community centre locating in the new area of Postipuisto, Helsinki, is in sharing spaces and reinforcing the social networks in the area. All the housing companies in the neighbourhood are participating in its planning, financing and usage. The community centre serves as a versatile gathering space for the residents of the area. The spaces of different sizes and types enable a wide range of uses and functions. I was involved in the sketching phase of the project taking part in massing and creating the layout and room program for the building. For more info click here.

Dwellings Promoting Sustainable Lifestyles in Vartiosaari: The topic of the thesis work is to study sustainable lifestyles in Vartiosaari island in Helsinki, Finland. The commission for the project was given by the city planning office of Helsinki. Vartiosaari, located seven kilometers east from the city center, has remained mostly natural and unbuilt despite of the city’s expansion around it. In autumn 2013 the city planning committee decided that a new city district of 6 000 - 7 000 inhabitants will be built in Vartiosaari.

The thesis work is design centered and consists of housing area in the north-eastern part of the island. The purpose is to study (1) sustainable lifestyles, (2) ways to improve the nature connection in housing and (3) constructions for hillside topography.

The project studies a new typology which combines positive aspects of sustainability from urban apartments blocks and suburban single family housing. Another objective is to examine adaptation on hill side topography and minimize the negative visual and ecological effects from construction.

The total construction in the project is 14 480m2 including 88 apartments. The building stock consists of apartments of 3 rooms and kitchen and 4 rooms and kitchen. Kaarti Manege Renovation, Kaartinkaupunki, Helsinki (4th grade): The basic approach to design is to respect the existing structures throughout the whole design.

Layers of time including the original use as army manége building as well as the 1950’s change to parking hall are highlighted with material selections: the original part’s from the 19th century are made of red brick, additions from the 20th century out of on site casted concrete and new structures out of massive cross laminated timber a building material of the 21st century.

Building functions are divided according to their level of publicity.

Floors which can be reached directly from the street level, either from the Kasarminkatu or from the Fabianinkatu, contains spaces like shops, ateliers, workshops and sports facilities. The aim is to connect Tähtitorninmäki -park, which has now been kind of a back yard of the manége, better to the city structure on Kasarminkatu -side. The restaurant/cafe is located above the main entrance with access to rooftop terrace on top of the addition part from the 60’s.

Rest of the spaces in floors 2 and 3 are dedicated to seminar and auditorium spaces.

With big variety of different functions in a building which has limited amount of daylight available both physical and mental connections vertically should be highlighted. The solution for the problem is to distribute the stairs in the building in order to get long diagonal views through the intermediate floors. At the same time the visitor is able to get a hint of the buildings interior dimensions as it was originally built in 1877.

(4. grade): Sustainable building design course organised by Aal-

to Creative Sustaianability is done in collaboration with Anahita Rashid (real estate) and Hesam Pakbeen (industrial design). In our group we desided not only to make sustainable buildings i.e. frames for people to live in but also to provide a design that affects on peoples lifestyles and behaviour. In analysing phase we ended up listing positive and negative aspects of different lifestyles from down town to suburbs and between single family living and apartments. Floor area ratio, daylight conditions, transportation, services, sharing, self sufficiency in energy and food production, recycling and waste management as well as private, public, safety and different age groups were highlighted in our project.

The outcome is five towers of single family house units placed on top of each other. Houses are connected with bridges to sixth tower with shared spaces a lift and a staircase. Each house is sorrounded with own garden balcony. Thanks to

pentagonal volume and specific floorplan every unit is provided with

open views and good daylight conditions.

Itä-Pasila revitalizing

Sustainable urban planning -course was also proceeded in multidisciplinary groups in Aalto university. Our group included Ahrum Jeon and Hesam Pakbeen from industrial design, Harald Arlander from landscape architecture and Jinhyun Kim from real estate. We started our project with the approach that Itä-Pasila is an island in the urban structure of Helsinki. The main positive aspects for the island like appearance are location in the heart of transportational network and unique, uniform urban typology of the area. On the other hand Itä-Pasila is surrounded with both physical and mental barriers and because of its unique typology the street network of the area is not matching with the surrounding city. Our design consists of two parallel axis: ‘Culturoad’ on the Asemapäällikönkatu and ‘Ringreen’ the green belt with pedestrian and biking lanes connecting the east and west coasts of Helsinki.

We took a look to the future and thought about the effects of Keski Pasila development in social relations of the area. Itä-Pasila will definately gain benefits from the development in central areas in many ways but we concern that the distance between the highrises of Keski-Pasila and suburbian blocks of Itä-Pasila might get too long. Itä-Pasila can’t compete with urban street life with many cafees and commercial trademarks. It’s surrounded by big transportational paths, but none of them is actually passing through the area. On the other hand Itä-Pasila is perhaps the most diverse area in Helsinki when it comes to nations, cultures and languages. After flavored with the history of the area as an active place of transportation on iron wheels there will be portable Bazaar and Art Galleries in old train and tram wagons. Ringreen is bringing together two bays of the gulf of Finland, the main green areas of Helsinki as well as all the main north-south oriented pedestrian routes. As Pasila is being the transportational hotspot of the future’s Finland it’s obvious that the bike and pedestrian connections should be also updated to meet the demands of 21th century.

Aalto Tongji Rooftop Project

Modular unit system ATDF Rooftop project, Shanghai (5. grade): Multidisciplinary Creative Sustainability master programs rooftop project was proceeded in two faces: first part as an intensive workshop week in Aalto, Helsinki and second a field trip to Tongji university in Shanghai to kick off the implementation part of the project. The core of the course in Helsinki was in concept and service design while in Shanghai our main task was to convince the Aalto Tongji Design Factory board to really start improving the rooftop through utilizing the outcome of the workshops. After the presentation in Shanghai we already started to activate the rooftop with some temporary functions together with local students. In workshop phase our group developed a modular system as a flexible platform for learning, relaxing, sharing, innovating and meeting - a collage of different cultures and actions! The design is based on a modular system which can be easily transformed for activities with different function and scale. We wanted the rooftop to be a central meeting place for people from different disciplines and highly self sustainable in food production - like a village in the countryside which doesn’t need much inputs from the outside world in order to sustain, but which also has very few outputs to the nature thanks to efficient recycling of materials and reuse of organic waste and manure. The more holistic approach in the project was to gain higher appriciation for rural lifestyles in urban China because we think that knowledge and appreciation for nature is one of the fundamental pilars in change towards more sustainable human behaviour.

Aalto Learning Centre

Aalto Learning centre (4th grade) is a new central hub and library building for Aalto University. The site is centrally located right next to the main building of Aalto University at the Otaniemi campus area. The concept of the building represents the modern era of facilities for encounters and interactive learning. In a given room program there was a division in to three different gategories: meeting, learning and doing. The approach I chose is to create spaces as accessible as possible as well as to encourage people to meet and interact with each other by designing a open and visible floorplan. After studying and analyzing the room program I came up with the centric, radial function diagram which is easy accessible with no corridors or dead ends and where the social intensity of different functions is divided gradually with focus around the ‘meeting dwell’ in the heart of the buiding.

Chapel

Island

The place of silence, Oulu (3. grade): A task in this project is to create a chapel/place for mental activity. Already from the beginning I’ve been inspired by the character of the place. The site is located at the north end of the Gulf of Bothnia where the river Oulujoki reaches the sea. The place of silence is build on a small shoal in an area where the varying wind conditions are constantly changing the sea level between -0.500 and +0.800 meters. The project is based on an idea of a split leveled construction creating an on going interplay with changing sea levels. The building masses and materials are assimilated into the eternal character of northern nature as well as into the function of the building as a place for visitors to calm down and meditate. Instead of a bridge, the island is reached at summer time by boat and at winter along the frozen sea. These primitive transitions are in essential role when experiencing the place.

Private house, Oulu (2. grade): The small, 8mx16m, site for the house is by the sea on an small island in the city of Oulu. The wooden constructed house is providing spaces for both living and working, on a dense structured modern housing area. The challenge in the project is to divide the space efficiently according to the different functions and at the same time ensure that there’s enough day light for each part of the house.

My solution is to create a small inner court yard, which is not only ensuring the required light into the different parts of the house, but also creates an exiting architectural tension between interior and exterior.

Stairs study

Stairs (2. grade):This is an additional task by the laboratory of industrial design, for attached private house project, which we proceeded on a 2nd grade.

I ended up in this kind of form giving after having turned the function and the character of the stairs over in my mind for a while.

The linked, split leveled contrution is expressing the vertical movement experienced when climbing up or down the stairs. While using these stairs the user is facing the rhythm and the on going interplay of varying views, lights and shadows.

sists of indoor bandy stadium, two hockey rinks, gymnastics hall, a 75-room hotel and an office space of 1100 m2. The bandy division of the Sport club Helsingin IFK contacted me at summer 2012 to make preliminary sketces and illustrations for the venue with an intention to be the latest forerunner in the field of big wooden sport venues in Finland. By putting together different functions we gained not only the economical circumstances to run the complex but also the possibility for synergy advantage like heating the hotel and office spaces with the exhaust heat energy from the ice cooling system. Another more local idea for the ecological sustainability was to cover the whole 25 000 m2 complex with a green roof to minimize the effect on the ecosystem of local storm waters.
