A Time of Transition, A Time of Appreciation W

hile just a few weeks into the position of Executive Director, it has been a whirlwind. Starting this position on March 1 was an intentional decision on my part, and yet the pace, the number of great events, and the learning curve have all been eye-opening. “Congratulations on the new position! How is everything going?â€? is the beginning of nearly every conversation I have with each person I meet. This question gives me the opportunity to share how excited I am to step into this organization and how much I learn every single day. Transitions have always brought RXW P\ H[FLWHPHQW WUHSLGDWLRQ UHĂ HFWLRQ DQG GHVLUH WR OHDUQ DQG they require energy, patience, listening, and trust. Splitting my Ă€UVW FRXSOH ZHHNV EHWZHHQ WKH RIĂ€FH DQG PDQ\ VWDWH WRXUQDPHQW venues, I have found this to be absolutely true, and yet, by far, the thing I feel most is appreciation.

The Minnesota State High School League has a rich tradition of great activities and tournaments for students, coaches, and directors, and spending time in and around these tournaments, I have been so impressed by all that I have experienced. In this article, I share just a few of the things Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve seen or heard recently that makes me truly appreciate our MSHSL: Our tournaments are staffed by some of the most passionate individuals I have encountered. They give of their time and their expertise, simply to provide the very best experience for all students, whether they are participants, play in the band, support their team as cheerleaders, or in the fan section. Many of them have expressed their pride in serving our tournaments for the past 15, 20 or even more years. <HW WKH\ UHPDLQ Ă&#x20AC;OOHG ZLWK JUDWLWXGH WKDW WKH\ FDQ EH D SDUW of the tournament in some way. They regularly share the fun interactions that they have with teams and how often they are thanked for the work they do. It is truly a team effort and we have an amazing team!

Our League staff is both talented and dedicated. Without question, my role right now is to be where they need me to be, and at the same time, to stay out of the way. This is the right answer, because these folks have been working for months to prepare for each tournament, they arrive early (some even stay over night at the venue) and they stay long after the last team has left. They take pride in offering some of the best tournaments not only in the state, but in the country, and we are all fortunate to experience them.

The partnerships we have with fantastic venues add to the experience and provide special memories for our students. DW 7DUJHW &HQWHU RU VWHSV XS RQWR WKH UDLVHG Ă RRU DW :LOOLDPV Arena, there is bound to be a smile, a look of amazement as they scan up and around, and a poke or a punch of a teammate saying â&#x20AC;&#x153;Can you believe we are here?â&#x20AC;? These memories are ones that will never be erased.

Dave Stead has never lost his passion for promoting the special opportunity that education-based athletics and activities provide. The recognition he has received at tournaments is most appropriate, and yet, it is my own experience this month with Dave that has me thankful. This has been one of the illuminating experiences I have encountered. His friendly, yet professional approach in which he treats everyone he meets with a friendly smile, offers them his ear, and shows them the greatest respect is consistent and most genuine. In doing so, he has set an example for each of us, in our work at the League and in our work in schools. He has demonstrated that we can have the highest of expectations and still treat all people in the best possible way, regardless of the situation.

Finally, I appreciate the emotions and learning that our student participants experience through their involvement in our activities. I have seen teams that, minutes after a challenging loss, were smiling, hugging one another and taking pictures, just because they had the opportunity to participate in a state tournament with some of their best friends. At the same time, I HQFRXQWHUHG Ă&#x20AC;YH \RXQJ ODGLHV LQ WKH KDOOZD\ XQGHU 7DUJHW &HQWHU walking with championship medals on, arms around one another and crying, just after winning a state title. I asked them â&#x20AC;&#x153;You did win, right?â&#x20AC;? They broke out into big smiles amidst the tears and replied â&#x20AC;&#x153;Yeah, we won!â&#x20AC;? yet it was so apparent that they were experiencing the mix of emotions associated with reaching the pinnacle and knowing that their season was now done and that, due to graduation, this team was never going to be the same again. What a special experience.

Our Minnesota State High School League offers so much to all of our participants, young and old, and I am so thankful to be a part of the experiences it affords.

oah Carlson of Houston High School, Kevin Cornelius of Orono High School, Brianna Kreft of West &HQWUDO $UHD +LJK 6FKRRO DQG $OOLVRQ 3UHVWE\ RI $OH[DQGULD $UHD +LJK 6FKRRO ZHUH DZDUGHG WKH Minnesota State High School League's Academic, Arts, and Athletics Award on March 24 during ceremonies held at the Loews Hotel in Minneapolis.

(VWDEOLVKHG LQ WKH DZDUG NQRZQ DV WKH 7ULSOH ´$Âľ $ZDUG UHFRJQL]HV DQG UHZDUGV KLJK VFKRRO seniors from across Minnesota for their achievements in the classroom, the arts, and athletics. To qualify for the award, students must have a â&#x20AC;&#x153;Bâ&#x20AC;? or better grade-point average and participate in League-sponsored DWKOHWLF DQG Ă&#x20AC;QH DUWV DFWLYLWLHV /HDJXH PHPEHU VFKRROV DUH LQYLWHG WR QRPLQDWH WZR VWXGHQWVÂłD ER\ DQG a girlâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;for the award.

Award recipients are selected through a multi-level process involving the Leagueâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s administrative regions DQG D FRPPLWWHH RI DWKOHWLF Ă&#x20AC;QH DUWV DQG HGXFDWLRQDO OHDGHUV 2QH JLUO DQG RQH ER\ IURP &ODVV $ VFKRROV and one girl and one boy from Class AA schools receive a four-year, $1,000 scholarship. %DQG FKRLU VSHHFK 5RERWLFV EDVNHWEDOO WUDS VKRRWLQJ JROI 1RDK LV D 1DWLRQDO 0HULW VHPL Ă&#x20AC;QDOLVW UDQNHG Ă&#x20AC;UVW LQ KLV FODVV and has taken many college-level classes at Houston High School.

He is vice president of the Minnesota Honor Society. The arts are Noahâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s passion, and his social studies teacher, Jacqueline Mathers, calls him â&#x20AC;&#x153;phenomenal.â&#x20AC;? For example, the list of instruments that Noah can play is amazingâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;we counted 11 of themâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;everything from piano and organ to bass guitar, oboe, clarinet and accordion. Noah sings, is the baritone section leader of the Southeast Minnesota Honors Choir. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also played major roles in school WKHDWUH SURGXFWLRQV DQG LV SUHVLGHQW RI WKH 5RERWLFV WHDP 7KLV ODVW experience has him interested in pursuing a degree in computer engineering. He plays varsity-level basketball and participates in trap shooting and golfâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;all of which Noah says, â&#x20AC;&#x153;push his comfort zone.â&#x20AC;? His teacher comments that Noah is a â&#x20AC;&#x153;true team player,â&#x20AC;? who encourages his teammates to do their best. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The sports I played in high school have helped me develop as a person. They have pushed me past my comfort zone and allowed me to explore things I otherwise would never do, such as trap shooting...

This sport challenged me to learn the proper way to shoot a gun safely while simultaneously being a lot of fun.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in the arts that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve found my passionâ&#x20AC;ŚEach instrument is a unique puzzle waiting to be solved while each piece of music is the key.â&#x20AC;?

He is a National Merit Scholar commended student, and in 8th grade, took math at the high school level. Kevin says he was constantly thrown into large groups of older students. Because of his talents, he was placed into the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s highest band as a freshman tenor saxophone SOD\HU ZKLFK $UQROG FRQĂ&#x20AC;UPV LV ´UDUH Âľ .HYLQ ZDV VHOHFWHG IRU WKH 0LQQHVRWD %DQG 'LUHFWRU $VVRFLDWLRQ¡V WK DQG WK JUDGH 4

Honor band and the All-State band, which performed at Orchestra Hall with the Minnesota Orchestra. The band director says Kevin â&#x20AC;&#x153;leads by example and has a great work ethic.â&#x20AC;? In sports, Kevin was captain for the freshman B-squad and junior varsity soccer teams, and captain of the varsity Nordic Skiing team. He is also SDUW RI 2URQR +LJK 6FKRRO¡V 5RERWLFV WHDP â&#x20AC;&#x153;I consider it one of my biggest honors in high school to have been named the captain for my freshman b-squad and JV soccer teams.

It told me that my teammates not only liked me as a friend, they respected me as a leader. To me, nothing could have been better.â&#x20AC;?

West Central Area High School Brianna Kreft *3$ 5HJLRQ $ Band, choir, speech, volleyball, basketball, softball Brianna says â&#x20AC;&#x153;persevering through failure and tribulation is what makes a champion.â&#x20AC;? She has taken college-level courses, as well DV KHDOWK Ă&#x20AC;HOG VFLHQFH DGYHQWXUH ELRORJ\ DQG D PRFN WULDO FRXUVH She received the MSHSLâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ExCEL award. Brianna is involved in band and choir, receiving honors and superior ratings. She has SDUWLFLSDWHG LQ VSHHFK VLQFH WK JUDGH ZDV QDPHG 093 HYHU\ \HDU DQG ZDV D VWDWH Ă&#x20AC;QDOLVW WZLFH %ULDQQD ZDV FDSWDLQ RI WKH varsity volleyball team for two years, and last year, she was named 093 DQG DFDGHPLF DOO VWDWH %ULDQQD ZDV FDSWDLQ RI WKH YDUVLW\ basketball team this year, and plays softball, too. She won the Big Bat Award last year. Teacher John Van Kempen says whatever activity Brianna is involved in, everyone around her looks up to and follows her lead and approach on being successful. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My sophomore year, I was nominated for the Minnesota Ambassadors of Music: a 16-day long trip to seven European countriesâ&#x20AC;ŚAthletics has taught me to set goals, work hard and work collaborativelyâ&#x20AC;ŚBecause of my experiences, I know that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s okay to make mistakes as long as I learn from them. The difference between good and great is admitting defeat but growing from it and being appreciative of the journey. I believe my involvement in arts, athletics and academics has molded me into the person I am.â&#x20AC;?

Band, choir, visual arts, tennis, golf $OOLVRQ LV D 1DWLRQDO 0HULW VHPL Ă&#x20AC;QDOLVW 6KH HDUQHG D RQ KHU ACT test and created her own independent study to complete a digital arts portfolio, so sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d have it ready for college applications.

Early in high school she participated in band, and played the piano as students rehearsed for musicals. She is a student adjudicator and section leader for choir. Allison plays varsity tennis, and this year was captain of the tennis team. She also plays varsity golf and has been captain for the past two years. Allison volunteers at her church where she plays the piano, bass, guitar and sings GXULQJ Ă&#x20AC;YH ZRUVKLS VHUYLFHV 6FKRRO &RXQVHORU 0HJKDQ 2UJHman-Crumb, says â&#x20AC;&#x153;Allison is the kind of student who only comes around a few times in a school counselorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s careerâ&#x20AC;Śand that her â&#x20AC;&#x153;well-roundedness and infectious passion for learning and service shines brightly.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have been the rehearsal accompanist for three high school musicals and played piano in the orchestra pitâ&#x20AC;ŚI am also a student adjudicator and section leader for choir. I have developed my leadership abilities, my organizational skills, and my ability to work with others. Being a tennis captain [and involved in the

arts] has drastically improved my leadership and teamwork skills.

Continue to Make a DiďŹ&#x20AC;erence The following is a reflection shared by Dave Swanberg, president of the MSHSLâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Board of Directors, during the Triple "A" Awards banquet on March 24.

O

n behalf of the Minnesota State High School Leagueâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Board of Directors, it is my pleasure to welcome the families and friends who are in attendance today. I am truly humbled to be a part of this prestigious ceremony. The 32 students being honored here today have demonstrated excellence in the Arts, Academics and Athletics.

Congratulations to each, and every one of Dave Swanberg you! You have all made a significant difference in your schools and communities. Whether it was in the classroom, on the stage, or on the playing field, you have taken advantage of the opportunities your school has provided and worked hard to achieve success. Today, we are here to celebrate and honor your accomplishments and the relentless pursuit of excellence that you have demonstrated in high school.

Each of you comes from different backgrounds, different schools and different communities. Each of you have been involved in different types of MSHSL-sponsored activities throughout your high school careers. However, there is one thing you all have in common: You are all difference makers.

It is obvious that you have been difference-makers on your athletic teams, your Fine Arts teams, in theatrical productions, band and choir concerts, classrooms, and student governments.

The immediate impact you have made in these areas is easy to see and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sure it was enjoyable to watch by your parents, teachers, coaches, teammates and spectators. I would also like to tell you that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going to take a few more years for you to understand the long-term differences that you have made in your schools and communities.

schools and communities have admired and looked up to you?

People that wish they could play an instrument or sing like you, wishing they could draw, paint or create something out of clay like you? How many want to be able to run, jump or throw like you?

How many people wish they had your work ethic, dedication, enthusiasm or intelligence? You are all role models to more people than you will ever know, and this will have a lasting impact.

To you, the Triple â&#x20AC;&#x153;Aâ&#x20AC;? award winners, on behalf of your teachers, coaches, advisors, directors and administrators I would like to say thank you for being a positive role-model. Our schools and communities applaud your efforts. Being a positive role model isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t always easy, but you sure do make it look easy.

However, your job is not finished. I would like to challenge you to continue to look for ways to make a difference.

I imagine you have all heard the story of the young person walking along the beach throwing beached starfish back into the water one by one. An elderly man stops and asks what they are doing, and then tells them there is no chance of making a difference because there were too many starfish washed up on the beach. The young person reaches down and picks up a starfish and looks the man in the eye and saysâ&#x20AC;Ś â&#x20AC;&#x153;it will make a difference to this one.â&#x20AC;?

President John F. Kennedy once said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;One person can make a difference, and everyone should try.â&#x20AC;? You all have demonstrated the character and possess the skills to make a difference. As you continue your journey, I would like to challenge you to look around and check for those starfish that are washed up on the beach in our schools and communities. Unfortunately, there seems to be an increasing number of them. When you see them maybe eating lunch alone, being bullied or picked on in the hallway, or not being included in an activity, take the time to reach down and pick them up and give them another chance. You will make all the difference in the world to that one person.

My most memorable experience in my athletic career at Apple Valley so far was my junior year State Basketball Championship runâ&#x20AC;Śmy proudest moments were in the last minutes of the State Championship game when I was sent to the free throw lineâ&#x20AC;Ś.I made both free throws and extended our lead over Champlin Park to seal our State Championship.â&#x20AC;?

36 HIGH SCHOOL JUNIORS RECOGNIZED FOR LEADERSHIP AND COMMUNITY SERVICE T he Minnesota State High School League and Wells Fargo honored some of the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s top student leaders with the ExCEL Award during ceremonies at the Girlsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; State Basketball Tournament on Saturday, March 17.

ExCELâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Excellence in Community, Education and Leadershipâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;is a unique recognition award that is given annually to high school juniors who are leaders in their VFKRROV DFWLYH LQ Ă&#x20AC;QH DUWV DQG RU DWKOHWLF activities, and who had made community service a central part of their lives. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The young people that we are honoring today are community service-centered and very deserving of this award," said Lisa Lissimore, the associate director that oversees the ExCEL program. â&#x20AC;&#x153;These student leaders go beyond the classroom DQG WKH Ă&#x20AC;HOG RI FRPSHWLWLRQ WR LPSURYH WKH quality of life for othersâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;giving wherever help is needed.â&#x20AC;?

Creating Student Connectedness T

odayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s students are under an incredible amount of pressure: academic pressure, achievement pressure, peer pressure, performance pressure and parental pressure to name some.

All come at a developmental time in life when they are starting to separate from their parents and family in search of an identity and a path for their life. For many of these students, these emotional and social pressures are resulting in a mental health crisis.

The National Institute of Mental Health reports that more than 3 million teens ages 12-17 have had at least one major depressive episode in the past year.

More than 2 million report experiencing depression that impairs their daily funcWLRQ 7KHUH DUH PLOOLRQ WHHQV WKDW KDYH an anxiety disorder. And many experts believe it is hard to quantify behaviors related to depression and anxiety, because they are deliberately secretive.

Todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s headline in the USA Today, ´œ:KDW LIV¡ 3ODJXH 3DUHQWV RI 7HHQ 6XLcides,â&#x20AC;? author Carmen Garner states, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our students are dying because they are not equipped to handle situations created by adults-situations that leave a child feeling abandoned and with a broken heart.â&#x20AC;?

What is causing this mental health crisis with todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s youth?

Multiple studies show that much of what is causing the mental health crisis of our youth is a lack of connectedness to nurturing adults and a caring community. Caring communities once provided a web of nurturing adults that answered the fundamental questions of childhood: Who am I? Who will love me?

What can I do with my life? What will I stand for?

7KHVH TXHVWLRQV ZHUH DQVZHUHG Ă&#x20AC;UVW LQ the family circle and then by the extended community. Connectedness to nurturing adults and a caring community provided young people with a sense of belonging, a rootedness and a sense of self. It was the caring community that ensured a place of safety and security that allowed for self-actualization. It is where young people learned about their unique value, the value of others and their interdependence.

While there are many reasons, think of the frenetic pace many families live today.

The focus of childhood is no longer about helping children discover the answers to the fundamental questions of childhood, and instead, has become an outcome-based chase to acquire experiences that will provide them access to an â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;eliteâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; club. This pace is so demanding there is little time left for connection to nurture the hearts and minds of our childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;little time left to help them discover who they are becoming.

Author Madeline Levine states in her book The Price of Privilege that â&#x20AC;&#x153;Adolescents need tremendous support as they

t is amazing how many times I hear or see that phrase during the high school state wrestling and hockey tournaments. I read about it in the newspapers. I view the threads through the multiple social media outlets. I see and hear it from television VSRUWVFDVWHUV DW DQG RU IURP WKH HDUO\ PRUQLQJ VKRZV where, with coffee cups in hand, the sunshine crews daily preview the games and contests and the possible outcomes.

I hear it in the crowds as they gather in anticipation of the Ă&#x20AC;UVW FRQWHVW , FDWFK SLHFHV RI LW IURP WKH WRXUQDPHQW ZRUNHUV DV WKH\ Ă LS IURP SDJH WR SDJH LQ WKH ZUHVWOLQJ RU KRFNH\ SURJUDPV In a ritual as old as the tournaments themselves they toss out questions likeâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; :KLFK KLJK VHHG ZLOO ORVH LQ WKH Ă&#x20AC;UVW URXQG"Âľ ´:KLFK WHDP GR \RX WKLQN LV SRLVHG IRU DQ XSVHW"Âľ or ´:KR GR \RX WKLQN ZLOO EH WKH FKDPSLRQ WKLV \HDU"Âľ At these great gatherings of family, friends and fansâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;where tens of thousands will attend the high school state tournaments at the Xcel Energy Centerâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; their passion and emotion, their loud and creative support and their focus to will a victory for their team or athlete always amazes me.

They become predictors and prognosticators. They all are trying to determine who is going to advance and who ultimately will become the next state champion. Everyone in the arena knows itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tournament time and anything can happen.

But it is very different behind the scenes as the student athletes and coaches access the locker room areas and begin their individual and collective preparations for their game or match. They know there will be a winner and a loser. They donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think about it, but they know it. To each of them the state tournament is not about the scoreboard. Instead, it is about will, character, resolve and most importantlyâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;hope.

The foundation of their hope is the sense of belongingâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;belonging to a team, belonging to something that is bigger than anything they could have ever imagined could come trueâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;they belong to a childhood dream that plays out in front of themâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;live

At these great gatherings that are the state tournaments, before tens of thousands of fans, friends and family we see student athletes give everything they have on a simple but deep idea called hope. We see incredible performances based on hope. As they step out on the mat or skate out on to the ice each of them knows â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tournament time and anything can happen.â&#x20AC;?

They compete driven on hope. We witness heart-stopping and heart-breaking performances we will remember for a lifetime. We remember them because we see their will, character, resolve and hopeâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;the true rewards of participation in high school sports.

And when it is over, when they leave their locker rooms, we see smiles and we see tears. We smile with their smiles and we tear-up when we see their tears.

They know the outcome is already global: social media is blasting out replays, the TV reports later that night will showcase WKH ZLQQHUV ZKLOH EULHà \ PHQWLRQLQJ WKH RWKHUV DQG WRPRUURZ PRUQLQJ¡V QHZVSDper will post the outcome in bold black numbers and letters and color photos.

5HJDUGOHVV RI WKH VFRUHERDUG WKURXJK VPLOHV DQG WHDUV ZH hear them say: â&#x20AC;&#x153;I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t thank my teammates enough for the great year.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our fans are the best.â&#x20AC;? ´0RP DQG 'DG , KRSH \RX DUH SURXG Âľ Through the smiles and through the tears we see them acknowledge their hope and recognize they belong. That is the greatest testament of all, not the scoreboard, not the heart-stopping or heart-breaking performances. No, it is the acknowledgement of belonging, built on a positive foundation of their dream called hope.

The sport of dance in Minnesota is unlike any other. As part of the MSHSLâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lineup of extra-curricular activities, students have the opportunities to participate in the Fine Arts. The Fine Arts activities include, Debate, One-Act Play, Visual Arts, Music Contests and Festivals, and Speech. The MSHSL has had scores of participants in the Fine Arts also excel at the national level in their Fine Arts activities. In this edition of the Bulletin, we asked this question of participants:

â&#x20AC;&#x153;How has participating in the Fine Arts enriched your high school experience?â&#x20AC;?

IRIS FRENCH Cannon Falls, Speech, Music â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 5:33 on a Saturday morning. I drag myself from my warm bed as I question why Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m awake at this ungodly hour, but as much as I want to crawl into bed and fall back asleep, I know that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not an option. Instead, I throw my hair up and wash my face and feeling a bit more awake, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m able to slump to the kitchen to get an absurdly large cup of coffee. By this point, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 6:01 and I have exactly 19 minutes to get myself out the door. I Ă&#x20AC;QLVK JHWWLQJ UHDG\ DQG DUULYH DW WKH VFKRRO MXVW WKUHH PLQXWHV early. Masses of other high school students, also in suits, also questioning their reason for being anything less than completely asleep on the Saturday morning greet me at the doors, and we march through the cold onto the bus and take off toward our Ă&#x20AC;UVW VSHHFK WRXUQDPHQW RI WKH VHDVRQ I never planned on joining the speech team. I was a dancer for most of my elementary and middle school career, but I also wanted to be just like my big sister, Lily, and Lily was doing speech. In seventh grade I was placed on the Junior Varsity dance team, and I was ecstatic. The next year, I made JV again, however, this year I would participate in speech part-time along with doing dance. I only competed at a few speech tournaments, but by the end of the season, I was hooked. I danced on the JV team for one more year while doing speech, but for the entirety of the dance season I was merely waiting for it to be over so I could start doing speech full time. The next year, I quit dance.

As a senior, underclassmen often ask me for advice regarding their own high school careers, and I always tell the story of how I quit dance. Not because I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t enjoy the sport, but because I found my home on the speech team. Participating in speech has forced me to work harder than I ever have before, and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s encouraged me to be the best I can be both during competition, as well as my day-to-day life. So, my advice for underclassmen is this: Find what you love and hang on tight. It wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t always be a smooth ride, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s worth it, especially when it comes to the arts.

Entering the foreign school, the team is greeted by hordes of students who appear to be much more awake than we are. Some are talking to walls, and some are seeking out old friends from different schools. I grab my binder and water bottle and begin mentally preparing myself for the three rounds ahead where I will speak in front of a judge using ridiculous voices and telling lame jokes in hopes of getting called up on stage to receive a medal at awards. Once I have arrived at an adequate stretch of wall, I put down my things, rub the sleep from my eyes, and begin talking to no one as I prepare myself for the day ahead.â&#x20AC;?

ALLIE LAMOTE Marshall, Speech â&#x20AC;&#x153;Although my high school experience has had many ups and downs, participating in Fine Arts has helped me get through a lot. Before high school, I never really felt like I belonged, like I was just a kid in the background. I was diagnosed with Auditory 3URFHVVLQJ 'LVRUGHU LQ WKH WK JUDGH DQG EHFDXVH RI WKDW , have always struggled in school and struggled to keep friends.

When high school came along, I was nervous. Then one day I saw that they were having auditions for the big fall musical that our school puts on every year. After weeks of waiting, the FDVW OLVW ZDV Ă&#x20AC;QDOO\ SRVWHG DQG , IHOO LQ ORYH ZLWK WKH DFWLYLW\ LQVWDQWO\ , KDG Ă&#x20AC;QDOO\ IRXQG D SODFH ZKHUH , Ă&#x20AC;W LQ ZKHUH P\ learning disability didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get in the way. All of a sudden, instead of being in the background I started to excel. Joining the high school speech team is another activity that I am absolutely in love with. Every year, I tried a new category. I have done +XPRURXV 6WRU\WHOOLQJ 3URVH 32, 3RHWU\ DQG 'UDPD , ORYH the competitive nature of this activity. I always have put speech as my top priority, and always getting better every year, and this year, I was given the amazing opportunity to be a captain on our team. Speech is more than just about the medals and the trophies; itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s about making a difference and using my voice. Preforming is something I will keep with me forever. It is because of the Fine Arts that I found who I am, and know that everybody has something they can excel in. If you put your mind to it, you have the power to reach for the stars.â&#x20AC;?

AWARD-WINNING SUCCESS

Winning the Triple "A" Award was a springboard to amazing journeys for these past recipients.

F

or the past three decades, the Triple "A" Award is one of the Minnesota State High School League’s most prestigious honors. The annual award, presented in March during the boys’ basketball state tournament, honors seniors that excel in academics, the arts and athletics.

The Triple "A" recipients are selected through a multi-level process involving the League’s member schools, the League’s administrative regions, and a special committee of educators, business leaders, and members from the Fine Arts and athletic communities.

Thirty-two overall winners are selected at the section level; a male and female from each of Minnesota’s eight geographic sections in Class AA and A. The nomination process originates at the member school level when one male and female Triple "A" Award winner are declared. A student must have a 3.0 grade-point average and participate in MSHSL-sponsored athletics and Fine Arts activities to be considered for the award.

At the section level, dozens of school winners are pored over before two recipients are selected before moving on to the state level. From the section winners, four winners are selected; a male and female from Class AA and a male and female from Class A. Winners receive a four-year $1,000 scholarship toward their college education.

“When we envisioned the Triple "A" Award, we wanted to ensure that Academics, Arts and Athletics were key components,” said Dave Stead, who retired April 1 after serving as the longest-tenured MSHSL Executive Director. “This award is the highest honor the MSHSL can bestow on a student in every member high school.”

As part of the nominating criteria, Triple "A" Award winners must also comply with the League’s Student Code of Conduct.

The 2018 winners honored last month, in Class A, were Noah Carlson of Houston High School and Brianna Kreft of West Central Area High School. In Class AA, Kevin Cornelius of Orono High School and Allison Prestby of Alexandria Area High School were selected.

Since the award’s inception in 1988, more than 14,000 students have represented their schools in the Triple "A" Program. This year’s honorees bring the MSHSL’s Triple "A" Award winners to more than 100.

After winning, then what? What then happens when the Triple "A" Award winners move on from high school? Where are they now and what kind of impact did their high school experiences have on their journeys into college and the professional workplace?

Former St. Cloud Tech student selected NFHS Section 5 Heart of the Arts recipient By the NFHS eorgina Simon, who graduated from St. Cloud Tech High School in 2017, was selected the 2018 Section 5 recipient of the National High School Heart of the Arts Award by the National Federation of State High School Associations.

The National High School Heart of the Arts Award was created by the NFHS to recognize those individuals who exemplify the ideals of the positive heart of the arts that represent the core mission of education-based activities. This is the fifth year that the National High School Heart of the Arts Award has been offered.

Section 5 includes Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa and Missouri.

While a student at St. Cloud Tech, Simon was an Advanced Placement Honors student with a 3.9 grade-point average who participated in speech, theatre, musicals, choir, volleyball, track and basketball.

During her emotionally-charged performance at the 2017 Minnesota State High School League State Speech Tournament,

Simon addressed the traumatic plight of vulnerable women in the Democratic Republic of Congo during civil war – while at the same time provided revealing insight to her parents’ similar real-life experience.

Simon’s parents are from South Sudan, where they fled war and crossed the border to an Ethiopian refugee camp. There, they were selected to come to the United States through a lottery system nearly 20 years ago. Her parents wanted to be able to provide education and opportunities for Simon and her siblings.

Through her 2017 speech performance, Georgina Simon Simon educated and increased awareness of the suffering of women in war-torn Africa, and she has a similar future of increasing awareness ahead of her. A clinical psychology major at the University of Minnesota, Simon has the goal of providing mental health services in underdeveloped countries, reducing stigma surrounding mental illness, and increasing awareness in emerging countries. Her unforgettable speech was just a step toward her visions of bettering the world around her.

What can coaches do to help athletes through injury?

S

tudents-athletes get injured in sports practice and competition. Each athlete will have an individual response to injury that may differ from teammates. A big concern for an injured athlete is the fear of looking weak to teammates, coaches, parents, and fans. The pressure on athletes is to stay in the game, but there are several reasons for not â&#x20AC;&#x153;playing hurtâ&#x20AC;? as playing at less than 100 percent can adversely affect both the player and the team.

Coaches are in a position to encourage athletes to report an injury and receive proper medical attention, rather than succumb to pressures relating to â&#x20AC;&#x153;not being tough enoughâ&#x20AC;? to stay in the game.

The conundrum for athletes is the high stakes of losing a starting or regular rotation position on the team as a consequence of injury reporting. Athletes may be reticent to report injury based on the saying â&#x20AC;&#x153;no pain, no gain,â&#x20AC;? which does not really apply to injury and playing hurt, but rather the muscle discomfort that occurs with intense training and the effort that goes into improving as an athlete.

Why is playing injured a bad decision? $ VLJQLĂ&#x20AC;FDQW LQMXU\ ZLOO UHGXFH DQ DWKOHWH¡V VNLOO DQG SHUformance level, and has the potential to affect the performance of the team. Coaches may not pick up the change in player effectiveness, losing the chance to substitute a reserve who is not LQMXUHG 3OD\LQJ LQMXUHG LQFUHDVHV WKH ULVN IRU UH LQMXU\ RU LQMXU\ WR DQRWKHU ERG\ SDUW IRU WKH DIIHFWHG SOD\HU 3OD\LQJ LQMXUHG DOVR forces substitution patterns to compensate for the injury, which take the place of embedded learned skills and may persist after the injury heals.

When tissue is disrupted by injury, the neuromuscular patterns that control learned movements (engrams) are interrupted. These engrams are housed in the brain sub-cortex and are imprinted by repeated use. Engrams are the reason you can get back on a bike and ride after the winter off or even several years away from peddling or operate a motor vehicle without concentrating on the basics of driving. Concussion injury uses a graded return protocol, so this process has been in the public eye and is not new to coaches or athletes.

During injury rehabilitation, motor skill learning progressions start with basic skills and progress to higher level skills that distinguish great from good players. After injury has healed, a rehab protocol usually advances a player through a set of return progressions, starting with basic skill activities and progressing to higher skill sets until full function and ability are restored. The customary criteria for returning an athlete to full competition are SDLQ IUHH IXOO UDQJH RI PRWLRQ VWUHQJWK SRZHU DQG HQGXUDQFH

equal to the opposite limb, and full functional capacity (general ERG\ VWUHQJWK FRQGLWLRQLQJ SUH LQMXU\ FDUGLRYDVFXODU Ă&#x20AC;WQHVV and no joint instability).

Injury can slow an athlete and a half-step late can be the difference between successful execution, re-injury or injury to another body part. Encouraging athletes to report and heal may reduce the adverse long-term consequences of injury for the athlete and improve team outcomes.

They are events that should be on everyoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Bucket List.

Adapted athletics donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t belong, you say? You clearly havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t EHHQ WR DQ DGDSWHG DWKOHWLFV FRQWHVW 7KHUH LV QRWKLQJ OLNH LW LW is sport and sportsmanship in their purest form. It is something you need to see to take in the embodiment of why we got involved in educaWLRQ EDVHG DFWLYLWLHV LQ WKH Ă&#x20AC;UVW SODFH The Adapted Athletics state tournaments donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t happen without WKH GHGLFDWLRQ DQG HIIRUWV RI 5LFK Matter, the MSHSL Assistant Director that oversees adapted athletics, and the Minnesota Adapted Athletic Association (MAAA). They dedicate themselves to the process of providLQJ D Ă&#x20AC;UVW FODVV UHJXODU VHDVRQ DQG state tournament experience. $V WKH &RRUGLQDWRU RI 2IĂ&#x20AC;FLDOV I have the honor and privilege of FRQQHFWLQJ ZLWK RIĂ&#x20AC;FLDOV RI DOO VSRUWV VSHFLĂ&#x20AC;FDOO\ DW VWDWH WRXUQDPHQW WLPH :KLOH VWDWH WRXUQDPHQWV are the crescendo of the season, it is also the exclamation point on a detailed process that gets us from tryouts to Championship Saturday.

To make sure that this process is as smooth as possible from WKH RIĂ&#x20AC;FLDWLQJ VLGH RI WKLQJV WKH 2IĂ&#x20AC;FLDOV 'HSDUWPHQW KLUHV 5HJLRQDO DQG 6WDWH &RRUGLQDWRUV WR RYHUVHH UXOHV LQWHUSUHWDWLRQV mechanics and state tournament selection. Before their seasons, Jacki, Tom and Michelle meet at the /HDJXH RIĂ&#x20AC;FH WR GLVFXVV UXOH FKDQJHV PHFKDQLFV FKDQJHV RU points of emphasis. These discussion points are then placed in the online rules meeting for their respective sport. The adapted sports get their rule basis and content from the corresponding NFHS sport. For example, Michelle and I will go over the fastpitch online meeting and delete any slide that does not apply to adapted softball. $Q\ RWKHU PRGLĂ&#x20AC;FDWLRQ RU FKDQJH ZLOO EH SODFHG LQ WKH 0LQQHVRWD PRGLĂ&#x20AC;FDWLRQV DQG SRLQWV RI HPSKDVLV VHFWLRQ 5XOH FKDQJHV for adapted athletics are found in the rules supplement for each sport. These changes are discussed and approved at the MAAA PHHWLQJV WKDW DUH KHOG TXDUWHUO\ DW WKH /HDJXH RIĂ&#x20AC;FH 7KH FKDQJHV that this group supports are then submitted to the MSHSL Board of Directors for consideration and approval.

Adapted athletics follow the NFHS rule book with changes that are indicated in the supplement for each sport. Assignments are emailed out and contracts are electronically submitted, which is a similar process for all League-sponsored sports.

All of this behind-the-scenes work takes place for all sports. However, after teaching developmental adapted physical education for 10 years, the Adapted Athletics tournaments have a special place in my heart. Seeing the joy and excitement of athletes at MSHSL tournaments never gets old. If you want to see greatness in action, attend the Adapted Athletics state tournaments.

This note was sent to the League office by Andrew Cook, a basketball official Amanda Berg, a PE teacher at Dassel-Cokato, organized and coordinated an Officials Appreciation Night during the Dassel-Cokato and Norwood-Young America varsity boys basketball game. Amanda worked with Perry Thinesen (AD) to post signs and spread the word, asking fans, volunteers, and anyone in attendance, to thank an official. At the beginning of the varsity game, the public address announcer read a few words of encouragement and appreciation to the officials that worked the game. Amanda and Perry also provided pizza, water and Gatorade for Tim, Nick and I after the game. We thanked Amanda for the appreciation event of the evening. Jason Nickleby had a good reminder in his recent email regarding incident reports, and he pointed out that an incident report could be submitted for a good incident as well as a bad incident.

Referee crew praises sportsmanship in Minneapolis City Conference The following note was sent to Minneapolis Washburn AD Reggie Perkins and Minneapolis Southwest AD Ryan Lamberty This is just a note of praise to you and your boys’ basketball programs, as well as your fans, for the positive roles they played in an incredible high school basketball experience at Minneapolis Southwest.

From the opening tap to the final horn of the third overtime, players and coaches from both schools displayed high levels of sportsmanship and respect toward one another.

As the game continued (and continued), each team intently strategized ways to come out on top. Throughout the aura of intense competition, the players and coaches never wavered from showing strong sportsmanship and respect to the game, as well as one another.

The players and coaches were respectful of the officiating crew throughout. When they had questions on a rule interpretation or a call, they asked in a respectful manner.

A handful of participants thanked us afterward following the long game that extended late into the evening.

Please share this note of praise on a job well done on many fronts with your participants, coaching staffs and school communities.

Hockey official makes player feel a little more at home Here is a social media post from MSHSL hockey referee Steve Mikkelson of Brainerd Last year, I reffed a boys high school hockey game at East Bethel arena. The visiting team was Princeton. I arrived wearing my usual CCM jacket and CCM hat with the Canada flag on it. A Princeton player told me he liked my hat, especially because of the Canadian flag. He said he and his mom recently moved to Minnesota from a small town near Toronto. We had a nice short chat. His coach approached me near the referee room to thank me for taking time to talk to his player. He said because of a divorce and such they ended up moving to Princeton where the mother has family, and he’s a good kid but having a hard time with the transition. I thought about this him on my drive home that night. I decided to order another CCM hat, with the Canadian flag of course!

When the hat arrived, I wrapped it and attached a note.

That night I was heading to work a game in Pine City. I knew Princeton was playing that night in Little Falls, so I stopped by the Little Falls arena on my way to leave the package with the rink manager, and asked that he give it to the Princeton coach when they arrived. The note on the outside was to the coach, asking that he give it to the kid from Canada. The note inside, with the hat said, “I thought maybe you’d want your own CCM hat to help you miss Canada a little less while you adjust to life in Minnesota, from the CCM ref you met in East Bethel.”

Fast forward to this season when I reffed in Princeton again. During the postgame handshakes, he approached me, with a big smile, his hand outstretched, and said “thank you so much for the hat you gave me last year, ref, I love it and it means a lot to me.” I shook his hand and told him “you are welcome.” I left the ice smiling and feeling great!

Instead, he was invigorated and full of zeal at what he could do to help honor the students and schools in his region.

He is most proud of creating the region Triple "A" banquet held annually at Cragunâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s where 32 recipients are honored. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think that Triple A is just the neatest thing,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Every year, that banquet is one of my top two or three highlights. It is so great to see what these young people have done. I get chills when I hear their accomplishments. Instead, they plan to attend numerous volleyball and basketball games. They also plan to increase their church volunteer service, and watch as their two grandchildren, ages 8 and 5, get involved in activities.

Board of Directors Meeting February 1, 2018 Minutes Summary, continued ʄ Bob Gardner, the NFHS Executive Director, is retiring effective August 1, 2018. ʄ The State Association Executive Directors attended the Winter Meeting in Scottsdale, AZ in January; e-sports was discussed. ʄ MSHSL executive staff presented at the MSBA conference; because of the weather the MSHSL booth was cancelled. ʄ 6WDII LV FXUUHQWO\ UHYLHZLQJ WKH &ODVVLÀFDWLRQ Tournament Format feedback received from member schools. ʄ Dave Harris, Region 8AA Region Secretary, announced his retirement as of July 31, 2018.

8. The Executive Committee’s report was received and included: ʄ Because Erich Martens' start date is March 1, 2018, a transition period will be extended. It is recommended that the contract approved for Dave Stead by the Board of Directors at the August 2017 Board of Directors meeting be voided. Dave’s fulltime contract will run through April 1, 2018. ʄ Request from Warroad High School to allow students whose parents teach in Warroad but who live in Canada and attend school in Warroad be granted varsity eligibility for more than one year. No action was taken by the Executive Committee. ʄ Brainerd High School is adding boys’ and girls’ lacrosse for the 2018 season and has requested additional games against schools who already have a full schedule. ʄ Kittson County Central hockey had requested the possibility of having junior varsity scrimmages against club teams or other non-school teams or allowing a junior varsity team to play an additional game. No additional information was submitted by Kittson County Central hockey and no action was taken by the Executive Committee. ʄ The Region 7A Committee made a request regarding tournament formats and neutral sites. Region Secretaries will discuss this item at their March meeting. ʄ The current Region Seeding Policy was reviewed.

Some changes were needed because of additional co-op teams. ʄ MSHSL Podcasts were discussed. There is some concern about the miscommunication of issues in a school community.

13. Approved the Eligibility Committee Minutes from the February 1, 2018 meeting.

Discussion Items A. Jimmy Bell, Student Angler Organization, presented a proposal at the October 5, 2017 Board Meeting. Mr. Bell presented additional information and answered questions from the Board Members. The organization is requesting the MSHSL to be a Presenting Partner similar to Robotics and Clay Target Shooting. % &ODVVLÀFDWLRQ 7RXUQDPHQW )RUPDW FRQWLQXHV WR EH GLVcussed. A Board Workshop will be held on Wednesday, March 28, 2018 to review and discuss feedback received from the League’s member schools. This will be a December 2018 Board Action Item.
