Behind the scenes...

Timeless Talks Marketing Coordinator Greta Kruger I am very fortunate to say that I LOVE WHAT I DO! Growing up I’ve only ever wanted to work in one of three fields: • • •

Animal rescue and rehabilitation Ballet teacher Any type of creative job

Needless to say the latter became my “day job”, but not just any day job… a job that I love!!!

I studied graphic design, my curriculum included some fine art subjects as well as photography; thereafter I was thrown into the exciting world of a few small design agencies.

Most of my technical knowledge and attention to detail was gained as a junior graphic designer. Eventually I worked myself up to a senior graphic designer and finally I got into the adverting and marketing fields. Never had I expected that my daily functions would one day entail pitching proposals to big corporate companies (screech).

In 2010 I was very fortunate to have been commissioned to do Soccer World Cup fine art Illustrations – one of my most proud moments still.

Throughout all of the above there were so many highlights and moments of pure awe that it’s almost impossible to give you a short recap.

I was a multimedia & flash animation artist; worked with voice-over artists & chefs; sourced models for photo shoots; tamed a horse during a photoshoot (till today I’m clueless as to who was more terrified, the horse or the model).

Today I am part of the Timeless Talks Team (and therefore the TimeTech Team as well). I still love my job; I have rescued and rehabilitated animals – in fact we have a small zoo at home AND I teach my daughter ballet while we dance to her favourite music.

Speaking from my heart, I can honestly say that I am living all of my dreams (a few new ones came along of course, and they are in the making). Rome wasn’t built in a day and so step by step I am building my dreams.

This is so true in my case, since I can remember I was standing with a tool in the one hand covered in grease all over. Who says girls can’t play with tools. After finishing High school in Secunda, Mpumalanga I was posted on a 24hour bus trip to SAS Saldanha and started with basic training in the SA Navy 2002. After running around and getting all smashed up by instructors, which by the way have a wicked sense of humour, I was offered the opportunity to join the engineering (mechanical) department on one of the ships named the Galeshewe, a warrior class strike craft used currently as an anti-piracy patrol vessel. There I qualified as a motorman and served until 2004.

End of 2004 I got drafted to SAS Isandlwala, valour class frigate build in Kiel Germany, with no clue what to do one first night duty. The ship still smelled like new paint and like the interior of a new German class car. Basically we didn’t get our hands dirty as everything was brand new and everything worked with electronics. From there got drafted to SAS Wingfield and started training for a Radio/ radar technician.

Finally after all the training and sailing and playing soldier, went looking for more adventures. Ended up offshore on a FPSO as the Head of department for the Instrumentation and electronics department. Best part of working offshore…. the helicopter flight to the rig and then back 10 l TimeTech Magazine February / March 2018

home (always wanted to be a pilot). Got dirty and learnt a lot form all the different engineering departments although one thing a person cannot forget after working offshore…SAFETY,SAFETY,SAFETY! Oil price went to the underground and offshore was no longer. From there went to work for a crane company as an electronics technician. Was in charge of the installation, repairs and maintenance on the loading systems on the marine cranes installed on the ships for various companies.

During this time I got to meet Tinus and was introduced to Timeless Technologies. We were working on a new loading system with cameras but unfortunately could not go ahead, however will like to one day explore that.

NOW……for the current chapter. Currently working for Timeless Technologies as a technician, and what a journey so far! One is never too old to learn new things and well what can I say….Thermal cameras are HOT! So referring to the opening quote…. I am still on my moulding journey, working towards becoming a leader in this industry.

PREVENTION

Better than Cure

Farm attacks are a common occurrence in our lives today.

Sad but true!

The best advice: prevention is better than cure – it saves us from harm.

Timeless Technologies invited Theo from ITS Systems to run a few tests at a farm where an incident had occurred. We tested the Davantis mini together with the new FLIR FB324-O thermal camera. In conjunction we also installed the FLIR CF-5222 Ioimage box camera with a 3-8mm MP lens. All analytics were collected, recorded and managed on the FLIR Meridian NVR. The above tests were done during daytime in order to show the actual products and to demonstrate the analytics side. Power to all products was supplied by a 3KVA UPS. Analytics were done by Davantis on the FLIR FB324-O to give an alarm as soon as an intruder (or an individual) was identified moving too close to the fence.

FLIR’s Ioimage 1080p is a low light colour camera with built in analytics and this enabled us to see what our measurement of success was with the product along the same fenced area.

Both products worked very well in the test run.

The fenced area we tested was clean with no obstacles for the entire length of the fence. We were able to get notifications while moving down alongside the fence or while approaching the fenced area. Tests were run on a close proximity distance as well as on more extended distances up to a maximum of 90 meters.

With such reliable products and good people I can only say it was a very productive day.

Lets be honest, in any company, each new day has a new set of encounters that might seem demanding or puzzling, having a strong team reduces the mental and physical demand of problem solving.

When teams who work well together meet on a regular basis and discuss solving issues it allows staff members to feel more comfortable in offering ideas and solutions.

It is however also important to be aware of the disadvantages of teams. These include: unequal participation by members, limiting of creativity, conflict within a team, processes can become longer if members

Taking over THE WORLD! CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA

A neighbourhood community in Cape Town (South Africa) has installed Davantis systems to protect its perimeter from unwanted intrusions. Placed in a rural zone of rich green spaces, but at the same time very close to the city, it holds more than 70 luxurious residences in one of the most privileged vineyard areas of the region. The community offers one of the most quiet and safe residences of the country.

BOGOTA, COLOMBIA

Davantis starts operations in Colombia with the first installation. The English School, one of the most important educational institutions in Colombia, contacted with Securitas for the design and implementation of the security of their premises. Securitas offered the use of Daview S and Daview LR systems for the perimeter protection, with the support of dome cameras to better verify any security incident.

MADRID, SPAIN

The Palacio Real of Madrid has installed Davantis equipment to protect its perimeter from unwanted intrusions. With an area of 135,000 m² and 3,418 rooms (on surface, almost double that of Buckingham Palace or Versailles Palace), is the largest royal palace in Western Europe. It is the official residence of the King of Spain; nevertheless, the present King does not inhabit it, but is resident in the Palace of the Zarzuela, reason being is that it is used for ceremonies of State and solemn acts.

DAVANTIS has also recently done a project to protect a Penitentiary in the Madrid area.

Built in 1995, it occupies a surface of 633,000m² and holds 1,008 cells. The installation of our system Daview LR will allow the maximum level of protection to the prison.

ABU DHABI

Louvre Abu Dhabi has entrusted Davantis with the installation of their security systems to guarantee the protection of the new Louvre Museum located in Abu Dhabi. With a total perimeter of 24,000 m² and over 400 surveillance cameras, the museum will be home to a large art collection from around the world. Architect Jean Nouvel, has been in charge of the design of this museum-city, where the centerpiece is a huge seemingly floating silvery dome. This extraordinary dome of 180 meters and almost 8000 stars defines a complex geometric pattern. It is designed so that the sunlight filters through creating an inspiring effect that acts to represent the palm trees of the United Arab Emirates.

SEVILLE, SPAIN

DAVANTIS has been chosen to install video analysis systems to protect the perimeter of Heineken’s plant in Seville.

Once again, the company will deploy proprietary solutions to make these premises safer, based on its long experience in video analysis for perimeter security. This time, Davantis will install a new security video analysis system designed specifically for department stores, hypermarkets and industrial facilities in the Heineken brewery in Seville. Excellent solutions for demanding clients. Heineken’s brewery in Seville is equipped with some of Europe’s most advanced brewing technology. The plant opened in 2008 in La Caridad-Cañada de Pero Mingo (Seville), and replaced the old Cruz del Campo brewery that was created in 1904. This production plant turns out 450 million litres a year, the equivalent of 8 million glasses of draft beer a day. Among its facilities is one of the biggest canning lines in Europe, with a capacity to produce 90,000 cans every hour. Heineken is a leader in the Spanish beer sector and a giant in the food and beverage industry. Heineken currently markets more than 250 brands of beer produced by 165 breweries in 70 countries.

• There are people who think Thermal Night Vision is not available to the public and can only be purchased by Military and Law Enforcement.

• There is a wide range of Thermal products that are available to the Public.

• Thermal Cameras are used for a lot more than Military use only such as Search and Rescue, Fire Fighting, Adventures, Hiking & Mountaineering, driving safe in low light conditions (for example at night) etc.

• Thermal Handhelds are bought by farmers, neighbourhood watch and farm watch.

• There are people that say thermal cannot see through a Space Blanket, Wet Suits and Clothing.

There are three levels of Instalert, you might choose the most sensitive for a cool environment and the least sensitive for a warm environment.

ONE CAMERA to manage an entire FARM...

During the last four months, I have been working with a farmer located in the Brits region. Our objective was purely to help the farmer protect his farm by preventing trespassers and cable thefts. In the process of doing demo’s and changing units, the farmer started to realise that there are a lot more to the unit than only security.

is not something you would see in the field every day. Because of the height, the farmer would be able to see a lot further with the camera. The viewing station is situated on his farm and he is also able to log in to the camera with his mobile device to view and control the camera from anywhere in the world where he has a sufficient signal.

From the beginning we were looking at the FLIR PT 307 unit, very powerful on its own. This unit starts at a reasonable price of 30 100 USD (MSRP) and gives you the capability to use thermal and optical cameras at the same time with a 360 degree pan tilt (PT) motor. The thermal 65mm, 320x240 camera will be able to do detection at around 1.6km and the optical camera adequately has the capability of 36 x optical zoom. This is some powerful stuff.

Now that we have covered the type of camera and the installation, let’s start talking about what happened next…

The installation was a full task on its own.

The farmer built a 56m high tower to mount the camera onto. This extremely high tower 20 l TimeTech Magazine February / March 2018

Like I’ve mentioned before, our main reason for the installation of this unit was for security reasons. Since installing the device, the farmer has been able to catch trespassers trying to steal from his farm not once, but FOUR times!

He also mentioned since these four incidents happened, that any attempts made to intrude his farm has rapidly decreased.

The farmer noticed that apart from the camera being successful for security purposes; it served him with managing his farm as well.

• Tractors standing on his property could now be detected and he could attend to security for them.

• All cargo loads were now visible at night, by using the device they could be counted, instead of an individual counting them manually.

• Sprinklers running throughout the farm could be monitored and faults in need of repairs could be detected.

• Dam level were visible.

Because of the above metioned reasons he decided to buy the FLIR PT 606 HD instead of the FLIR PT 307. The FLIR PT 606 HD is in a league of its own! The thermal camera has a 106mm 640x480 lens and can detect a person almost 3km away. The optical camera is a full HD 1080P ½. 8 type Exmor R CMOS sensor with the capability of 30 x optical zoom with auto focus.

In conclusion, although the farmer initially required the device for security reasons, he came to realise what an enormous improvement this device made to supervising and managing his farm.

Extract: ” Smart Video Security Handbook” HOW SMART THERMAL VIDEO CUTS SECURITY SYSTEM COSTS Conventional wisdom says you can’t put a price on security. Unfortunately the real world doesn’t always work that way. Every outdoor security system has a price, and anyone who plans, purchases, or uses such a system has to find a price that fits the budget.

Today’s thermal video security technology makes it much easier to balance the desired level of security protection against the available budget. The best systems are accurate and reliable. And remarkably, they are also less expensive than other, less effective systems.

In fact, they deliver their more reliable, more accurate protection at up to 50% less in total cost when compared to systems built around visible light technology, which require many more cameras. Fewer cameras equals less infrastructure, and in all but a few cases infrastructure (camera mounts and installation, cabling, and construction) is the biggest driver of expense.

This chapter outlines the factors that affect the total cost of a video security system, and shows how a high-performance smart thermal system saves money. It does not price out specific equipment or individual systems. That would be impractical, considering how greatly outdoor sites vary in size and configuration. Its intent is to provide security professionals with rough guidelines for: • Evaluating the competing technologies • Planning cost-effective systems • Controlling infrastructure and installation costs • Reducing wasteful staff chores We start with a case study showing how a smart thermal video security system can reduce installation and operational costs when compared to a visible-light video surveillance system.

Thermal Video vs Visible-Light: Budget and Performance As noted in Chapter 2, smart thermal video security cameras with builtin image processing will detect motion and recognize a potential threat at analytics. The latest smart thermal cameras cover areas the size of a football field (Figure 10), more than ten times (10X) what the visible-light competition or even an infrared camera with external analytics can handle.

The obvious security benefit of broader coverage by a security system happily translates into significant cost reductions as well.

Savings start with equipment costs. Since the cameras cover more than 10X the area, the number of cameras required for full coverage drops significantly.

As noted above, when fewer cameras are needed, the impact on system cost is profound.

With fewer cameras the site needs fewer camera mounting poles. That triggers an avalanche of savings in construction costs. There’s a drastic reduction in the need for power lines and wired network connections. There’s less trenching or stringing of overhead wires.

Vandalism Solution For a better sense of how this works in actual practice, consider the case of a major passenger rail company in Italy. The company deployed smart thermal cameras to provide rail yard security and prevent vandalism at one of the largest railcar maintenance facilities in the country. Its experience is typical of what security professionals can expect in terms of decreased cost and increased ROI when they choose longer-range and more accurate outdoor security cameras over limited-range alternatives.

passengers every year, delivering crucial transportation services for Milan’s financial district and the surrounding region. The company’s expansive rail yard stretches over two kilometers, encompassing an area equivalent to sixty football fields, where millions of dollars’ worth of trains are stored and serviced.

Extract: ” Smart Video Security Handbook” Located along a busy public highway, the rail yard was experiencing a difficult security challenge. Intruders were able to gain access to the yard undetected at night and cause severe damage to rail cars stored at the facility. It was a huge, expensive problem. Restoring an individual rail car costs many thousands of dollars, and it has to be removed it from circulation to be repaired, which incurs lost revenue as well.

The ongoing vandalism occurred even though the rail company had guards patrolling the large rail yard. Guards in that region of Europe can cost as much as $20,000/month, so the company was spending large sums on security without getting any closer to its goal of detecting intruders along the large perimeter of its yard at all hours of day and night, even in complete darkness.

When a newly purchased line of rail cars was badly damaged by vandals, the organization recognized the need for a more effective solution. Initially they considered using visiblelight surveillance cameras. They turned to their security integrator, who explained that surveillance cameras would still require active monitoring by security personnel, and would be ineffective at night when many of the intrusions were taking place.

Instead the security integrator recommended smart thermal cameras to detect intruders in real time. The system was well suited for the large perimeter and would detect with accuracy regardless of lighting and weather. The integrator was confident the system would meet the organization’s security needs at much lower infrastructure and operating costs.

Accordingly twelve long-range smart thermal cameras were installed to provide automated awareness along the two kilometer perimeter. When a camera detects an intrusion, onsite security personnel receive an alarm along with the intrusion’s location pinpointed onto a topology map of the facility. For real-time visualization, high definition PTZ cameras are automatically steered to zoom in on and follow the intruders, allowing security guards to quickly assess the situation. Once an alarm has been verified, local police authorities are notified to respond and intervene.

According to the integrator, the solution has provided excellent outdoor detection with very few nuisance alarms. “Maintenance costs have been very low, and the cameras have stood up well to the elements. On the installation side, it’s a very easy system to deploy,” they stated.

Shortly after the solution was put into place, the technology detected several trespassers entering the yard. The system alerted rail security to intervene and local authorities were able to apprehend the intruders. The organization is expanding the system to other maintenance facilities throughout the region.

Extract: ” Smart Video Security Handbook” Factors for Success The rail yard’s successful implementation highlights a fundamental change in smart thermal video security: it is not only technologically superior to other approaches – it is now cost effective as well.

Thermal cameras once had a reputation for being very expensive. But like most other electronic devices they are beneficiaries of advances in design and manufacturing that boost performance while reducing cost.

Today they make perfect economic sense as the foundation of an advanced video security system.

That doesn’t mean they cost less than their visible-light counterparts. Thermal cameras, especially one of the smart models that are revolutionizing outdoor site security, remain somewhat more expensive. But the gap between the two technologies is much smaller. And when one smart thermal video camera can replace eight to 10 visible-light cameras with analytics, the overall savings far outweigh the modest per-camera price premium.

Factor in the lower outlays for infrastructure and installation that naturally follow when you reduce the camera count, and a smart thermal video security system becomes the low-cost choice. Let’s look at one example of how such a system can impact the budget for a new or upgraded system.

Higher Performance, Lower Cost Video security and surveillance systems are most commonly configured to protect the perimeter of an outdoor site. However, another strategy is becoming increasingly common: area or asset coverage.

Figure 3.1 above illustrates this approach: a single smart thermal video camera protects an entire football field, including its perimeter, while it takes 10 visible-light cameras with external analytics to cover only the perimeter.

Table 1 quantifies the cost savings that accrue from using this strategy.

In this example a single smart thermal camera monitors a 48,000 ft² buffer zone. Ten competing cameras with external analytics are needed to cover the same area. The smart thermal camera is 14X the price of one of the competing cameras, yet the total cost of the smart thermal video system is less than one-fourth that of the other system.

This startling difference comes from substituting long-range, wide-area coverage smart thermal cameras for limited-range, narrower-coverage devices.

There is a wide range of coverage patterns available in the latest smart thermal camera models (see Table 2 in the next chapter for a list). This allows system planners to design sites with the minimum number of cameras necessary. Because of this, the average smart thermal video system will have a total cost at least 50% below what can be achieved with standard cameras, and often much lower.

The economics are even more compelling when ongoing costs are factored into the budget. Since a smart thermal video system is much less likely to trigger nuisance alerts, security staff will not be forced to waste time and money checking on false alarms. Fewer trips translate into reduced operating expenses.

Reducing the Cost of Perimeter Protection In many high-risk situations it is desirable to create zones of protection that extend outside the fence-line. Such buffer zones give security staff more time to respond before intruders breach the perimeter and get to the site’s assets.

Typically a fenced perimeter is protected by a “blind” sensor such as fiber on the fence, infrared beam, or passive infrared sensors (PIRs). The sensor is supposed to detect activity that might pose a threat to the site before the potential intruder can breach the fence. It is augmented by a camera to help security guards determine the cause of any alerts it generates.

The sensor approach usually acts as a supplement to a site’s video security system.

But the cost of deploying and maintaining two separate systems – sensor and video – can quickly escalate.

Extract: ” Smart Video Security Handbook” Nor is it money well spent. A “blind” sensor has limitations. Like the video system it is intended to supplement, a blind sensor is prone to a very high rate of nuisance alerts. Deer brushing against the fence can set off its alarms.

In addition, potential intruders must touch the fence (or be in very close proximity) before they are detected. Clever trespassers, both animal and human, can find ways to circumvent that protection by bridging over or tunneling under the sensing system. These “blind” sensors add substantial cost to a security system, but very little security.

If a security manager needs an early warning function, he or she is better advised to implement volumetric coverage of the fence, as illustrated in fig.3-4, to provide a “buffer zone” outside the fence. Not only does this eliminate the need for an expensive “blind” sensor system, it is also a best practice for outdoor security.

Smart thermal cameras excel in the role of volumetric sensors. They detect people and objects beyond the fence line of an outdoor site, triggering alarms when intruders approach the facility. Security personnel get ample warning of the threat and have more time to intervene.

Figure 12 compares a smart thermal video security system in volumetric mode (left) with a sensor system (right).

It’s immediately apparent that their wider coverage gives thermal cameras an advantage in anticipating the approach of an intruder.

There are some high-risk situations where a security manager might decide that a site needs a second layer of protection, and choose to deploy a fence-mounted sensor system as a supplement to a smart thermal video security system. Even if he or she takes this approach, the resulting hybrid system will have a lower overall cost than the system on the right in fig.

3-4, because the superior coverage of a smart thermal video security installation will still require fewer cameras.

Extract: ” Smart Video Security Handbook” Alarm Policy-Driven Video Security Structuring a security system often becomes a tug-of-war between comprehensive protection and budget constraints. Up to now we’ve explored how smart thermal video security systems go a long way toward reducing the tension by • using fewer cameras than a conventional system, and • requiring less infrastructure and thus limiting the cost of installation • greatly increasing security and situational awareness And there is another factor that helps hold down costs: establishing appropriate detection and response (alarm) policies. Although this does not affect initial cost, its impact in lowering the ongoing operating costs of a security program is substantial.

Smart thermal video cameras are designed to detect objects that violate video analytic rules. They place a red box on violations, send alerts over the security network, and track the potential intruders through their fields of view.

The result is better targeting of truly suspicious movement. Security staff will not be forced to respond to a large number of nuisance alarms from objects that do not threaten the site.

The downstream savings in lost manhours and wear and tear of response vehicles can be considerable.

The next chapter will include a section on setting alarm policies, within the context of how to select equipment and design a smart thermal video security system.
