Weninger wants low barriers to financial tech

Chandler state Rep. Jeff Weninger has introduced legislation to reduce barriers for “fintech” entrepreneurs to utilize emerging technologies through a “regulatory sandbox environment.” “These emerging technologies include blockchain, digital wealth management, payment processors, and a host of other sectors,” he said in a release. A “regulatory sandbox” allows a person to temporarily test innovative financial products or services on a limited basis without being licensed or authorized under state laws and is administered by Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich. He will help early-stage entrepreneurs who do not have access to the legal and financial resources necessary to navigate the traditional regulatory process. “As a lawmaker and business owner, I’ve always advocated for pro-economic growth policies aimed at getting government out of the way of Arizona entrepreneurs,” said Weninger. “For years, young fintech companies have been weighed down by state and federal regulations. “It can take years of work and millions of dollars in compliance costs and legal fees for entrepreneurs to successfully maneuver 50 different licensing and regulatory schemes so they can operate lawfully across the

United States.”

Insys manager seeks no mention of opioid crisis

Lawyers for Jeffrey Pearlman, a former district sales manager for Chandler-based Insys Therapeutics, is seeking to bar U.S. prosecutors from referring to the “opioid crisis” at his trial. Pearlman is accused of engaging in a scheme to pay medical practitioners kickbacks to prescribe a fentanyl-based treatment called Subsys. He’s being tried in federal court in Connecticut. His lawyers say jurors would likely have strong biases against someone like Pearlman whose company sold and marketed opioids.

A spokesman for U.S. Attorney John Durham in Connecticut said prosecutors would respond in court. Opioids were involved in over 42,000 overdose deaths in 2016, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. _________________________________
