Ricardo Santana Velázquez studied international relations in college and has now worked as a foreign diplomat for 42 years. Countries he’s called home, albeit temporarily during missions that typically last three to five years, include Japan, Italy, Cuba, India and Costa Rica. But the latest post for the veteran diplomat — who holds the esteemed title of Ambassador with the Mexican Secretariat of Foreign Affairs — feels more like his real home than usual.

“I have been in countries where the culture is very different,” Velázquez told the Ventura County Reporter. “So many things from Mexico, you can see them here [in Oxnard], you may find them here. A lot of things to cook and everything.”

American people to join us here in the consulate,” Velázquez said. “We have a lot of activities that we want to show to them. The traditions, the values that we have in Mexico, like this exhibit presenting all of the local painters. And they have here the space to show us what they do, so I am so happy for them.”

Consulate showcases local artists Oxnard Performing Arts Center (OPAC) officials said they received a prestigious $10,000 grant from the National Association of Latino Arts and Culture to continue and strengthen OPAC’s partnership with the consulate to create a welcoming cultural space at the two-story Mexican government office building.

Velázquez, 65, recently started his new assignment overseeing Oxnard’s Mexican Consulate and July 10 was a whirlwind day of greeting new people. He also welcomed a “sister city” delegation from Puerto Vallarta, celebrating a new relationship with the city of Port Hueneme, and helped unveil an art exhibit on the walls of the consulate located near Oxnard Airport at 3151 West Fifth Street.

“I invite all the friends of Mexico and the

The latest exhibit titled 8@5th/Artists from our Community is the third staged inside the consulate since 2021, according to Carolyn Merino Mullin, OPAC executive director. The show will be on display through Nov. 10.

“It’s wonderful that this consul is excited to continue this as a cultural space. And, you know, it’s an incredible place, they welcome 96,000 visitors every single year. And I think government can be a very intimidating experience, so this is a way to make it warm and welcoming to the public Monday through Friday, which is great,” Mullin said.

The latest exhibit focuses on emerging artists who embrace Mexican and American cultural heritage in a variety of styles and mediums. One of the featured artists is Oxnard resident Chuy Leon, who displayed several paintings on wood illustrating the relationship between humankind and nature.

“In each painting, there is a human element and an element from nature, whether it’s a plant or animal or something of the Earth,” Leon explained. While his artworks aren’t necessarily based on Mexican themes, he said all of his work is infused with his culture. “I believe that it fits with Mexican culture simply because I am Mexican. In a way, I do try to have my subject matter communicate more of a universal message. But it’s just inevitable that a lot of the inspiration comes from our own culture. It’s just really validating to just have been selected to be

It was nearly 100 years ago that Washington Elementary School was built at 96 MacMillan Avenue in Midtown Ventura, which at the time would have been near the eastern edge of the expanding city. By the 1980s the Ventura Unified School District had shuttered the campus, partly due to safety concerns about the aging buildings, and neighbors started complaining about graffiti, vandalism and unsheltered people who moved in. Things looked brighter for the campus after it was leased and renovated by Ventura County Christian School in 1999, but that school recently moved after VUSD officials concluded Washington School fails to meet current earthquake standards.

Now leaders of a Ventura nonprofit focused on preserving historic architecture are contemplating ways the school might be reused as

offices, another school or possibly housing for teachers, and whether or not it may qualify for the National Register of Historic Places. San Buenaventura Conservancy for Preservation President Stephen Schafer told the Ventura County Reporter there are fears the building will be vulnerable to vandalism once again now that it’s vacant.

“So we’re back at the point where we have a school that’s a vibrant building that still has all of its bits and pieces attached to it and it hasn’t been boarded up yet, it actually hasn’t been vandalized yet. And the community is concerned about a vacant building that could attract issues and what can we do about it,” he said.

Schafer will lead an informational meeting on July 26 to discuss historic preservation options and potential adaptive reuse.

“We are trying to, first of all, meet with the neighbors and do questions and answers about the school. What do we know about the school? What do we hope to find out about the school? And one of the main things we hope to find

out is, is the school eligible for the National Register of Historic Places,” Schafer explained. “If the community isn’t interested, then it’s up to the conservancy to decide whether we’re interested.”

Schafer said many people who live near Washington School are fearful it might be sold and torn down, and efforts to preserve it could be enhanced if it’s deemed to have historical significance.

“I think there’s a lot of misinformation and a lot of worry. There might be some fear of giant buildings, which I don’t believe is warranted, but, you can’t say exactly because if it is on the surplus properties list and it gets sold outright and there are no protections applied to the buildings, then who knows what can happen,” he said.

VUSD spokesperson Marieanne Quiroz told the VCReporter in an email that no final decision has been made by the district’s Board of Trustees about what will happen to Washington School, which was deemed to be surplus property in 1993. According to Quiroz, district officials were not notified about the

meeting planned by the San Buenaventura Conservancy.

The informational meeting about Washington School will be held at Grace Church across the street from the school, starting at 6 p.m. on July 26.

“We’re not 100% sure what to expect from this meeting,” Schafer said. “We want to see if there are people in the community that are interested in joining with us to

preserve the school, and if there are, sending that message to the school district.”

The San Buenaventura Conservancy informational meeting regarding Washington School will be held on Wednesday, July 26, at 6 p.m. in Cooper Hall of Grace Church, 65 MacMillan Ave., Ventura. For more information, visit sbconservancy.org.

BACK TO SCHOOL

This issue can help you share news about your back to school schedule, fall programs, enrollment, tours, donations etc...

Founders of Plastic Free July, an initiative of the nonprofit Plastic Free Foundation, have been trying, since 2011, to “work towards our vision of seeing a world free of plastic waste.” Perhaps the phrasing of this vision statement on their website (www.plasticfreejuly.org/about-us/) is idiomatic to Western Australia, where they launched the organization in cooperation with local governments, but it seems to also express appropriate modesty about the probability of significantly reducing worldwide dependence on plastic anytime soon.

Organizers are “working towards” elimination of plastic, rather than defining success as eliminating it. Moreover, they work toward a “vision of seeing” the possibility of such a world sometime in the future. Currently, “free plastic” seems more realistic than “plastic free.”

We rely on plastic for everything from medical devices and drip irrigation tubes to electric wire insulation, but this reliance has allowed plastic to “contaminate every corner of the Earth,” as pointed out by Matt Simon, in his book published last year, A Poison Like No Other: How Microplastics Corrupted Our Planet and Our Bodies. According to Simon, plastics break down into microplastics, which end up in everyone’s bodies, and these plastics contain benzene, vinyl chloride, polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and other known and suspected carcinogens.

Despite the ubiquity of plastic, the foundation’s website states, “millions of people across the globe take part [in Plastic Free July activities] every year,” and over 140 million people are likely to participate in this year’s campaign, according to a press release from the Plastic Free Foundation. The title of this year’s campaign theme explains why so many participants are unintimidated by the scope of their challenge: “Small steps make a big difference.”

The key action called for is “choose to refuse single-use plastic.” The foundation does not expect participants to live without any plastic for an entire month, or even to live without plastic for a day. Instead, during the month, it promotes a few specific actions and expects that the campaign will “show business and governments they need to step up too,” according to a press release quoting Executive Director Rebecca Prince-Ruiz.

Locally, the Ventura County Sustainability Division, operating within the County of Ventura’s Executive Office, is guiding county employees’ participation in Plastic Free July, broadening the campaign to include actions for also reducing other waste, including paper and food. The division is offering “sustainability SWAG prizes,” such as reus-

able metal straws, to the first 10 employees who, on Aug. 1, document three actions taken as part of the campaign.

While many of the proposed actions, consistent with the “plastic free” theme, target plastics, the “Plastic Free July” challenge is part of a larger online platform (https://climateresilientvc.org/user/register) where the general public can also “take the challenge” through actions such as going paperless. For example, the website challenges participants to sign up for electronic bank statements.

Other organizations using July to encourage plastic reduction include the Community Environmental Council, an environmental nonprofit working primarily in the tri-county area. The council will host its second annual Plastic Free July Expo on July 27 at 5:30 p.m., at the new Environmental Hub in Santa Barbara. The city of Ventura’s Environmental Sustainability Division is educating the public on reducing plastic waste with tips on Instagram and Facebook.

For my own “take the challenge” action, I pledged to substitute a reusable water bottle for a single-use cup and eliminate a straw. Readers of this column may wonder why I was not already doing this. The answer illustrates how easy it is to resort to convenience. I regularly bring my children to the Sky Zone Trampoline Park in Ventura, where the drinking fountain has been broken for months. Twice, when my kids were thirsty, I got them drinks, in plastic cups, from the refreshments counter. To avoid spills, I even gave them straws. Last week, with Plastic Free July in mind, I instead brought their reusable water bottles, with built in spouts, filled with filtered water from home.

Incidentally, the bodies of the reusable water bottles are metal, but the lids and spouts are plastic.

David Goldstein, Environmental Resource Analyst with the Ventura County Public Works Agency, may be reached at 805-6584312 or david.goldstein@ventura.org.

part of this exhibit along with all these great artists.”

Consulate welcomes Mexican sister city

Former Port Hueneme Mayor Sylvia Muñoz Schnopp led the drive to create a sister city relationship with Puerto Vallarta when she served on the city council a few years ago.

“So this is a dream come true,” said Schnopp, after seeing her efforts finally come to fruition with the visit by a delegation from the bustling Pacific Coast resort city. “It’s really wonderful because I know it’s going to start a beautiful relationship with our communities. And there’s so many things that we can share, not only culture, but food and education and art and so many other wonderful things.”

She added that there’s a colorful history related to such relationships. “It brings camaraderie. Sister Cities [Sister Cities International] was created after World War II, so there’s a real story behind it. Instead of, you know,

war and building bombs and all this other stuff, why don’t we do a cultural exchange, a language exchange and see that there’s some value because we’re all people.”

In addition to visiting the consulate, the delegation from Puerto Vallarta toured the U.S. Navy Seabee Museum and Fathomwerx innovation lab at the Port of Hueneme. There was also a more somber stop at the beachside sundial memorial for the 88 people aboard Alaska Airlines Flight 261 which crashed into the ocean off Port Hueneme in 2000 after originating in Puerto Vallarta on its way to San Francisco and Seattle.

Raul Coultas is the chairperson of the Puerto Vallarta Sister City Delegation and said he was happy to travel to Port Hueneme to sign the agreement binding the two cities together.

“We have similar topics. We have a port, you have a port. We have nice weather, you have nice weather,” Coultas said. “So maybe we can receive the students from Port Hueneme and you can receive the students from Puerto Vallarta. You know, the culture is very important for a lot of us, so we have many opportunities.”

Community involvement important to diplomatic mission

At the end of a busy day, it was clear that Velázquez enjoys the role he plays on the world stage. “I chose this career and I am so glad for that. It means a lot of things. One of them is to represent your country around the world, to know about your culture, to talk about the country, the traditions and values.”

When asked about the message Velázquez hopes to send to Ventura County, he said it’s that the neighboring countries have more in common than many might think.

“I want to tell you something, my friends, and keep it in the bottom of your heart. The United States is the best friend to Mexico and we are always ready to work together,” Velázquez said. “And we can do a lot of things together, not only for the Mexican community, but also for the city, for the county, and for the American people here.”

X-Traordinary X-Citement

It all started with a 2019 voicemail left for Marlyss Auster, president and CEO of Visit Ventura.

“I listen to it. I’m like, ‘Did they just say this? Excuse me, could this be real?’” she recalled to the Ventura County Reporter.

The reason for Auster’s shock and delighted surprise was because the fateful message was left by organizers of the X Games, the world’s largest exhibition of top action sports competitors, and they were interested in Ventura as a potential venue. As head of Visit Ventura, Auster is charged with enhancing the seaside city’s tourism economy and generating excitement about events and attractions. Having spent many years working in the tourism industry, she was aware of the boost Ventura could receive from hosting the X Games, which started in 1995 with skateboarding legend Tony Hawk winning a gold medal at the inaugural skateboard vert competition.

When Auster started having conversations with X Games leaders,

she realized they were dead serious about Ventura, a city that was gaining steam as a tourism destination while also known for its long connection to skateboarding and surf culture.

“It seemed like a really natural, viable partnership for us because it is so much about the athletes, and they live here,” she said. “This is what we are. I have an office where I see surfers and skateboarders go by every single day and it just felt really right.”

Living the dream

Auster traveled to Minneapolis for the 2019 Summer X Games along with Ventura Mayor Matt LaVere and other city officials. (LaVere is now a Ventura County Supervisor representing Ventura.) They started to envision how the nationally televised event could best be showcased at the Ventura County Fairgrounds and around Downtown Ventura.

Encouraging conversations with X Games leaders continued after the discussions in Minneapolis and Auster traveled to Aspen for the Winter X Games in January 2020. Both sides were getting close to signing a part-

nership deal, according to Auster. “And then COVID happened and it changed everything,” she said. “We were completely shut down.”

But even a global pandemic that halted the professional sports industry and made hosting events with thousands of fans impossible could not kill Auster’s dream of bringing the X Games to Ventura.

“I didn’t stop. I was talking to them at least every two to three months just to check in. You know, everybody was working remotely and we had built relationships,” Auster said. “When you’re in the live-event business and everything is ripped from underneath you and that is your business model, that’s tough. And so conversations continued to happen.”

The perseverance paid off.

Auster returned to the 2023 winter X Games in Aspen during January and was encouraged when the 30 minutes she was allocated to meet with X Games officials turned into an hour and 15 minutes.

Executives with the X Games toured Ventura a few weeks later — while also making it clear they were

still considering other possible host cities. But by March, Auster heard from organizers during a virtual meeting that they “believed in the Ventura community” and the city had been chosen to host the X Games finals July 21-23, following smaller lead-up events in San Diego and Los Angeles.

“I almost wanted to cry,” Auster said. “It’s a passion. I love this city. I love seeing economic growth. We are a tourism city. I want to do it responsibly so that the community embraces it . . . I think that as a community, we can have a lot of fun with it and be proud that they picked us, and we are that special.”

A city beaming with pride

The reality of this dream-come-true sank in for the community on May 3 when X Games leaders staged a news conference on the steps of Ventura’s historic City Hall to make it official. X Games CEO Steve Fisler was handed a ceremonial key to the city of Ventura and received cheers and a big round of applause when he announced “The X Games is coming to town!”

Fisler said they were excited to bring fans back to the X Games after holding televised events without spectators at professional training facilities around Los Angeles the past two years.

“It’s competition and entertainment, and we’re excited to showcase it here at the fairgrounds. We really spent a lot of time thinking about what’s the right way to return to action, and we’re confident we nailed the formula here,” Fisler said.

LaVere said the dream that was fostered four years before was now becoming a reality thanks in no small measure to Auster’s dedication, and referred to her as “our fearless leader.”

“That journey took us to Aspen, to Minneapolis, to numerous meetings with ESPN, led us through a global pandemic, led us to meeting Steve and his team and the X Games family,” LaVere said. “All of that led us to today, the culmination of four years of hard work and what I see as a transformational event coming right here to the Ventura community.”

Mayor Joe Schroeder said it’s clear

why Ventura is a great place to host the X Games finals and called it an “epic moment in our city’s history.”

“Ventura offers the ultimate playground for extreme sports enthusiasts. Our surf and skate culture is a key part of our community ethos and naturally complements the energy and excitement of an international competition like this,” the mayor said. “It is an honor to be selected by the X Games. We look forward to welcoming thousands of athletes and fans to our community and showing the world all the unforgettable things Ventura has to offer.”

Getting ready for the spotlight

Preparations have accelerated since the May announcement, with the Ventura County Fairgrounds transformed into a construction zone in recent days, as massive ramps are built to launch competitors into the sky.

More than 150 of the world’s top skateboard, BMX and motorcross athletes have received invitations to compete, including names that are well

known to action sports enthusiasts such as Sky Brown, Elliot Sloan, Nyjah Huston, Garrett Reynolds, and Momiji Nishiya. Over 70 hours of footage will be aired on ABC, ESPN, ESPN2 and streaming channels YouTube and Twitch.

The competition begins on Thursday, July 20, at 4 p.m. with the Monster Energy BMX and Skateboard MegaPark Finals featuring athletes performing tricks and maneuvers over quarter pipes and huge gaps. That event will be held at SloanYard MegaPark, the private compound in Vista, Calif., of skateboarder Elliot Sloan. There will be no live audience, and the competition will not be broadcast live, but shown later, at 5 p.m., on ESPN.

On Friday morning starting at 10:30 a.m., events at the Ventura County Fairgrounds kick off with the BMX Dirt Elimination followed by the Women’s Skateboard Street Elimination at 12:30 p.m. The last event scheduled for Friday is the Moto X Best Trick competition starting at 7:45 p.m.

The competitions continue throughout the weekend, culminating in the Pacifico Skateboard Vert Best Trick competition at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, where athletes are judged on “aggressive execution of maneuvers, degree of difficulty, originality, style and amplitude of their single most difficult trick,” according to event organizers.

Coverage on ABC is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday and will include Women’s Skateboard Park, Moto X QuarterPipe High Air and Men’s Skateboard Street competitions.

X Fest

The athletic contests are only part of the draw for spectators with tickets, however, since fans will be treated to a myriad of activities and events, including one called X Fest which is included with the cost of entry and designed for fans of all ages.

X Fest will feature live music, athlete autograph sessions and even a FlowRider® Wave Machine for fans who remember to bring a swimsuit. Other interactive attractions include the Hot Wheels Mini Ramp, STACYC Mini Moto Course, Mountain Bike Dirt Course, Skateboard and BMX Street Course, Traxxas Remote Control Truck Course, BMX Pump Track and the Drone Cage, organizers said. Saturday at X Fest is billed as “Women’s Day,” offering women-led learn-to-ride sessions in the interactive parks.

President of Fan Experience and Hospitality Valerie Ryan said they’re thrilled to be welcoming spectators back after four years, and also allow them to participate interactively.

“This year’s X Fest provides the opportunity for fans to fully immerse themselves in the world of action sports with a variety of activities that will complement the high energy of the X Games,” Ryan said. “We’re looking forward to getting fans back onsite to witness the extraordinary talent of the athletes, while making new memories at X Fest!”

Tony Hawk — perhaps the best known skateboarder of all time and a 10-time X Games gold medalist — also plays a big role in the event. His Vert Alert competition during June in Salt Lake City served as a qualifier for the X Games and he will be working in the broadcast booth while in Ventura.

“I am looking forward to seeing X Games return to a big fan experience, and to celebrate skateboarding like never before,” Hawk said. “And I hope I can come up with some new tricks by then.”

Nailing the landing

With the big event fast approaching, Auster gave the Ventura City Council an update at their July 10 meeting.

She said community involvement has been overwhelming, mentioning local restaurants and bars that have developed X Games-themed items to help people celebrate, and even a hair salon that invented an X Games haircut.

She also touted a 20% discount code for tickets for locals to attend the games (VENTURA20) and ways to enjoy the festivities without even stepping inside the event gates, such as high-flying drone shows that will be visible above Downtown Ventura Thursday night and Surfers Point beach the following two nights.

The intersection of Main and California streets will also be transformed into a skateboarding obstacle course during the Kickoff Skate Jam skateboarding exhibition planned for July 20, where the athletes are also invited to experience Downtown Ventura for themselves.

“It’s going to be pretty awesome,” Auster told the council. “We’re doing some meet and greets with athletes so that they can sign decks for skateboards of the youth and really make an impression. These people are heroes to our community and people that skate around town, so it’s great to be able to make that connection.”

Curren

Curren Caples was born and raised in Midtown Ventura where surfing and skateboarding were a way of life growing up. That’s hardly surprising since his dad, Evan Caples, is a professional surfer who won many contests and owns Momentum Ride Shop in Port Hueneme.

Caples recalls riding a skateboard for the first time when he was just 4 years old. “Basically kind of just skated in front of my house barefoot. So I was around 6 years old when I got a real board and started going to skate parks.”

“It’s cool to . . . have it be in my hometown . . . I want to represent the city well.”

Caples, now 27, cut his teeth at Skate Street in Ventura, a huge indoor skateboarding park that unfortunately closed when he was about 9 years old. So his parents started driving him to other skate parks around California where he excelled in the sport. He credits their support with helping him to achieve fame and fortune in the skateboarding world.

“Without them, I don’t know where I would be right now,” confirmed Caples, 27, who now splits his time between Ventura

and Los Angeles. He is set to make his ninth X Games appearance in Ventura. Past competitions have earned him two gold and two silver medals, and his most recent X Games appearance was in Austin in 2016. He said he was excited when he learned he would make his return to the X

Games right where his professional skateboarding career started.

“It’s pretty cool to have something like this that has kind of shaped my whole life, skating X Games and all that,” said Caples. “So it’s cool to, like, have it be in my hometown. It’s going to be definitely nerve-wracking to skate the contest. I want to represent the city well.”

We need your help!!!

When asked why he thinks it will be nerve-wracking, Caples said it’s because almost everybody he knows will be there watching.

“I’ll have so many friends here and stuff, and I’ll be getting heckled the whole time,” Caples said. “But it will be fun. I’m excited for it.”

“Skateboarding puts all the limits into the unlimited.”

Bryce Wettstein casts a whimsical glow wherever she goes, whether performing her smooth, surfing-inspired skateboard tricks or improvising funny songs on the ukulele she carries with her everywhere.

But beneath her happy demeanor and colorful clothing lies the heart of a champion, having won women’s park national championships in 2019 and 2022. The 19-year-old resident of Encinitas is a member of the 2023 USA Skateboarding team and made the women’s park finals in the Tokyo Summer Olympics during 2021, where she finished sixth.

“Holy mac and cheese,” she said when contemplating her successes, the five continents she’s competed on and five previous X Games

appearances. “The thing is, I’m so in love with it every time, because you don’t really know why something’s a dream, but you just know it is. And I think that’s what makes it so dreamy, is like you don’t really know the content of it. You just know how it makes you feel. So I’m really just grateful…It’s motocross, BMX, skating, but it’s more than that, even. It’s something where we all feel more than we’ve ever felt.”

Wettstein started both riding a skateboard and surfing when she was just 5 years old. At the tender age of 15, she was named to the

“It’s the fact that when I’m skating, I don’t feel like I have to be in one place at one time, but in every time and all places,” Wettstein said.

“Freedom is hard to come by a lot of times because we’re always around things where there’s maybe something limiting something. But skateboarding puts all the limits into the unlimited. It’s like having a sky and forgetting there’s even clouds there. It feels so free and clear.”

Ruby

Ruby Lilley may be just 16 years old, but she’s already an X Games veteran.

Lilley will be competing in her fourth X Games in Ventura this weekend in the skateboard park competition which involves using a variety of ramps, bowls, quarter pipes and ledges to perform tricks, grinds and jumps. Lilley took second place in the X Games held in Japan in May, along with a check for $15,000.

Now a resident of Oceanside, Lilley was born in Ocean City, Maryland. She told the Ventura County Reporter that while she’s competed in numerous other competitions across the globe, performing in the X Games tops them all.

“I would say being in the X Games just feels surreal,” Lilley said. “It’s just like a skater’s dream to be in X Games. And I would say my favorite thing about being in X Games, the level of skating is just taken to a different level. We’re all just pushing ourselves and the courses are super advanced and super ahead of the times.”

Lilley’s visit in May was the first time she’d had a chance to spend time in Ventura, but she already felt at home.

“I absolutely love it,” she stated. “The people are super nice and, I

mean, we’re right by the beach. So I just woke up and opened my hotel door and just saw surfers riding the waves. So I think it’s a great place to have X Games and it really just shows the culture of surfing and skating in Southern California.”

With all the attention and television exposure for the X Games in Ventura, she thinks her sport will only continue to grow.

“It’s super crazy to me that

skateboarding is just getting on such a big platform and just blowing up all across the world. And X Games is definitely one of those contests that is blowing up skating and just, you know, putting you on a world stage, basically,” Lilley said. “So it’s crazy and it gives a lot of skaters exposure.”

After all the recent kerfuffle with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, you might think a musical poking fun at nuns could be a touchy subject for some viewers. But judging by the laughs and cheers of the audience, the latest Ojai ACT production of the comedy musical Nunsense is a hit. And if the good sisters are having a blast, why not join them?

It is, after all, for a good cause. It seems the Little Sisters of Hoboken have just suffered a great tragedy and are now in dire need of funds.

While on a mission to minister to lepers on an island in Southern France, the convent’s cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, inadvertently poisoned and killed four dozen nuns. After some scurrying and scheming, the Order managed to cover the funeral costs for all but four of those poor sisters. They might have paid for it all, except their Reverend Mother just had to buy a nice flat screen TV. Oops. Seems she miscounted the leftover offering plate. Wink, wink.

The remaining dead nuns, now conveniently stored in a convent freezer, have yet to be buried, and the fear is that the New Jersey Health Department will inspect their kitchen any day now. So timeliness is essential.

As the Mt. St. Helen’s Theater prepares for its upcoming show, we learn that, unlike the nuns we might have known back in the day, these ladies are holding cards under their habits. They have talents, ambitions, and a few wing-and-a-prayer ideas for cracking the big time. As the play progresses, we learn precisely what this troupe can do (God protect us).

Did I mention the humor is bawdy? Yes, the jokes are many, some of them blue, and the music is certainly nothing you would hear during mass. And did I mention that these ladies can dance? Let’s see. What else do we have? Ah. A grumpy puppet, some accidental drug use by the Reverend Mother, ballet, tap dancing, country music and a Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes winner. Does that whet your appetite?

Every nun seems to get their highlight. Sister Mary Hubert (Darrienne Lissette Caldwell) brings the soul to the sisters and a back-scratching hand to Sister Mary Regina, the Reverend Mother (Sindy McKay), whose patience with her remaining cloister is wearing thin. Sister Robert Anne (Dianne Miller), chewing on every Canarsie syllable, wants to break out on stage. Then there’s the daffy Sister Mary Amnesia (Anna Kotula), whose memory has been fogged by a blow to the head. And finally, there’s Sister Mary Leo (Brianna Turner), whose ballet moves are quite plié-able. To support the music, there’s the ample talent of Father Pianus (Andy Street), playing like a pro on the keyboards.

As you may surmise, there’s plenty of tongue in cheek to go around and a lot of ribald fun. We’re talking song and dance and a lot of just plain satire, irony and bald-faced screwball-ism. Yes. I made that word up. Don’t get your drawers in a wad. It’s show business, and these gals are plainly having fun.

So, take a load off, put away your rosary and prayer book, and don’t take a darn bit of this seriously. Really. Nuns just want to have fun, and without a doubt, these girls are having a hoot.

Nunsense is onstage through July 23 at the Ojai Art Center Theater, 113 S. Montgomery St., Ojai. For tickets and more information, call 805-640-8797, ojaiact.org.

Guster has been a band since 1991. Which, by our calendar, suggests that they’re rolling up on a third of a century together. Formed as a trio of college freshmen at Tufts University, the group’s not only a living, thriving band in 2023, it’s a unit that seems to have never lost a sense of plain ol’ fun.

The group’s founding drummer/ percussionist, Brian Rosenworcel, says that Guster has never shied away from experimentation, down to the roles the group has taken as songwriters and instrumentalists. By way of example, he points to the instrument-switching aspect of the group as one of the many ways in which Guster’s been able to maintain a long-running sense of playfulness.

“One thing we’ve done to keep

loose is to lose the rigid rules about instrumentation,” he said in a recent interview. “We burned those down about halfway through our career. We were able to say ‘Eff it, I want to play bass, I want to play drums, I want to play keyboards.’ In doing that, we allowed the sound to go where it’s wanted to go. One of the keys to our longevity is allowing the music to push wherever it wants to go.”

And, by extension, those songs take on different shapes in live settings.

“We write a different set list every night,” Rosenworcel said. “We might call out a song on the spot. We’re well-honed in being entertainers at this point, and we can tell if our set is connecting.”

After touring a bit in late 2022, the band members are getting ample opportunity to rekindle their inventive live sets this spring and summer, undertaking their most ambitious touring since the onset of the COVID19 pandemic in early 2020. At that point, Rosenworcel and his fellow multi-instrumentalists and vocalists Adam Gardner, Ryan Miller and Luke

Reynolds were on tour with an improv comic, Connor Ratliff, who’d help work the room during sets. Together, they created a kind of unique tension through direct audience participation.

“It broke the fourth wall,” he said.

“We were all onstage with an exciting sense of fear. It was a new and sponta-

neous thing to do after so many years of playing the same songs. When COVID hit, we were just hitting our stride with Connor. Then Tom Hanks got COVID, and everyone was told to fly home the next day. There was definitely some uncertainty as to when we’d play again. But as it turned out,

we had a great tour last November.”

This year, the band’s four members are taking some lessons of the last three years to heart. They’ll play a lot more outdoor concerts when possible, as folks have become more accustomed to shows in that setting, while still slotting in plenty of gigs at

larger clubs and theaters. They’ll also indulge in, ideally, at least two concerts with symphonies, a tradition that they’ve maintained for a while now.

Ronsenworcel said these shows, in particular, add a sense of adventure whenever they appear on the calendar. Asked to explain the experience of playing in such a setting as if the interviewer is a 5-year-old, Rosenworcel was happy to oblige.

“This is what I would tell a 5-year-old,” he began in deadpan. “It’s actually a good question. The thing with this type of musician is that they’re excellent. They’ve been playing their instrument their whole life and can look at a chart and the first time they play the song it’s right. They’re also unionized and the idea that you might have more than one rehearsal with them isn’t going to happen. Your one soundcheck is when you run through all the songs that you’ll do that night. And you have this incredible conductor who’s this sort of robot, this AI version of a musical human being. They’ve done all this research, even knowing how other symphonies have played these songs with you. They reference it all, they translate between the band and the symphony, who are musicians speaking two different languages. It always goes off without a hitch and that’s due to the musicality of the conductor.”

He described the feelings at these one-off shows as being “so powerful. You have 50, 60 musicians onstage, playing to these charts. You’re hearing a piccolo flute or all of this weird percussion or violin countermelodies that are unexpected. So the next time you play, you miss the power of it all. The best part is that you’re pulling off songs that aren’t considered slam dunks in your usual set list.”

Rosenworcel remembers that last summer, Guster played with a Utah symphony at a venue in Park City with mountains in the background and thousands in the audience. For that show, and many of the symphonic shows, he knows folks are traveling from all over the country to attend. Creating these special types of experiences is part of the appeal of Guster for the band members these days, executing ideas that are new and unique and, to bring up the term again, fun for all.

They’ve played the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre near Denver four times as a support act, once as a headliner (when a torrential rain was followed by a windstorm). They’ve had a song used during a pivotal moment of the cult classic movie Wedding Crashers. They’ve had a song used in a very different context, as

the backing track of a heart stent commercial. They’ve played on cruise ships until learning of the environmental impact of those voyages, at which point they gracefully bowed out of the activity. They’ve been signed to major labels and small indies; played cover songs to stirred-up, sing-along audiences; and made the kind of indie hit song, “Satellite,” that serves as a career-long signature track.

They’ve been stacking up experiences and plan to keep on doing so. In 2023, they’ll both nod to their past and create new work for the canon.

A new Guster album will arrive this year, the first since 2019’s Look Alive. It’s made up of tracks that have been percolating since before the pandemic. The band will also play a variety of shows this year that’ll feature the full track list of 2003’s Keep It Together, a nod to that album’s importance with their rabid fan base.

It’s been quite a run for a band that was signed to the influential Aware Records in the 1990s, a label that shot several bands into the indie spotlight for a short while, others into lasting careers. Rosneworcel remembers that time as one of sleeping in vans, criss-crossing the country to small but ever-growing audiences. Through that time of growth and all the others that followed, Rosenworcel and his core crew of collaborators have made a life of their college music project, Guster.

“After our Aware phase,” he said, “we signed with Warner Brothers. They were about getting songs on the radio and I remember the old version of the industry, where they’d send a radio rep out and you’d go to dinner with folks from the local radio stations. We had some good dinners that way, but we never had a song that was right for radio. Selling albums was something that . . . I don’t know the feeling. We never saw a penny from that, always owing our record companies money. The industry shifted and we’ve been on different independent labels and now it almost doesn’t matter what label you’re on.”

Business aside, he says the group’s at a creative peak, feeling “really back in the flow as a band.”

Guster performs on Thursday, July 27, at 7 p.m. at Ventura Music Hall, 1888 E. Thompson Blvd., Ventura. For tickets and more information, call 805-667-8802 or visit venturamusichall.com.

The X Games finals are set to arrive at the Ventura County Fairgrounds July 21-23 and local breweries are ready to pour their new celebratory recipes. Poseidon Brewing Company, Rincon Brewery, BellRinger Brewing Company, Transmission Brewing and Ventura Coast Brewing Company are among the local craft brewers eager to share what’s new on tap.

Deep Sea Brew

Poseidon Brewing Company is introducing its new Tailwhip Pale Ale. The Tailwhip, inspired by the fan-favorite motorcross trick, is made with Lotus hops, providing notes of orange, vanilla, berries and tropical fruits. All together the drink creates a fitting backdrop for X Games in the summer.

Poseidon’s owner, Brian Oliver, said the challenge to create a brew for the competition was one he took on with open arms because he actually has experience on the

dirt track, riding since he was in grade school.

“Motorsports are near and dear to my heart, especially dirt bikes,” said Oliver. “When they dropped that bomb, I was like, ‘Holy cow! Out of all the places it’s coming to Ventura, California.’”

On the can, you can see Poseidon’s distinctive nautical branding with a twist: The signature vintage deep sea diver will be doing a tailwhip off the coast of Ventura Beach.

Take a Ride with the Rodeo

Rincon Brewery wanted a brew that encompassed the three disciplines involved in the X Games finals this summer: BMX, motorcross and skateboarding. The brewery ultimately decided on the new Rodeo Red India Pale Ale. Rodeo is a trick that can be accomplished in all three events, each with its own variation. All

three can be seen on the can, which is inspired by 1990s X Games graphics.

The Rodeo aims for a smooth and dry flavor profile with hints of caramel malt and lots of hops. “We’re super proud of it,” said Rincon co-owner Luisa Hyatt. “I think our crew did a great job representing X Games in the beer and on the can art.”

For those traveling by Amtrak, which is encouraged by X Games and Visit Ventura, the Rodeo will be available on the Pacific Surfliner.

ing the perfect pairing for the X Games finals.

“We actually put a lot of thought into what kind of beer we would want to drink in the peak of summer while watching extreme sports, and it always came back to this light lager,” said Thille. “It’s light, refreshing and it’s actually a harder style for us to brew because there’s not a lot of hops to hide behind.”

Aside from the Surfliner and Ventura Coast Brewing Company’s Oak Street location, the Summer Shredding can also be found at Tony’s Pizzaria, which can be paired with the X Pizza for an even more extreme experience.

Can-Can in a Can

Transmission Brewing is releasing its new Beer Can-Can Pale Ale, named after the BMX and dirt bike trick. The Beer CanCan is formulated to create a citrusy-dank flavor with notes of grapefruit and a pale-malt base.

In his efforts to create an

extreme brew, Transmission’s owner, Carey Jonker, embraced the similarities between the brewery and X Games.

“If you’ve been here, you’ve seen the vintage dirt bike hanging from our ceiling, so our interests are aligned pretty directly,” said Jonker. “It was fun to make a beer that was a little bit old school on the hop varieties, but still refreshing and fun.”

Bottoms up Handplant

BellRinger Brew Co. is introducing the Handplant India Pale Ale, which embraces the classic skateboarding culture of Los Angeles.

“For us it’s less about a physical or identifiable image and more of a spirit and energy,” said BellRinger co-owner Dan White. “I grew up skateboarding and riding along Venice Beach and I think the craft brewing industry has embraced the same mindset of being independent, doing something special and what may be

considered extreme.”

White expressed that the classic approach is consistent across the flavor profile as well. “The hop profile we use, it’s all what they

call classic C hops; but if you go back 10 to 15 years ago, these are sort of the cutting edge hops. Just like when skating was cutting edge and X Games were sort

of blossoming and becoming the new thing.”

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS:

If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property.

NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale.

If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call FOR SALES INFORMATION, PLEASE CALL (855) 986-9342 or visit this internet web-site www.superiordefault.com, using the file number assigned to this case 2023-1214.

Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in

time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet website. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.

NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction if conducted after January 1, 2021, pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code.

If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call FOR SALES INFORMATION, PLEASE CALL (855) 986-9342, or visit this internet website www.superiordefault.com, using the file number assigned to this case 2023-1214 to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid, by remitting the funds and affidavit described in Section 2924m(c) of the Civil Code, so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase.
