Preparation
Strategize Your Approach: Check out the list of employers who will be attending the next career fair through Sun Devil CareerLink. Rank the ones you’re interested in speaking with, in order of importance.
Dress to Impress: No suit? Buy or borrow whatever you need to move away from your usual student image. Looking sharp not only draws employers’ attention, it will help you feel more confident in a professional setting. Considering what to wear is just as important as considering what not to wear. Think about your nails, hair, and any other physical aspects that send a positive or negative message about your attention to detail and how seriously you’re taking the job search. If you’re on a tight budget, you can find great bargains on professional attire at a variety of discount department stores.
Prepare Materials: Have at least one resume for each organization you plan to speak with, plus five or more to give to employers that attract your attention at the event. Print on good quality paper (at least 20 lb weight).

Attendance
They’re Watching You: Keep in mind that the moment you enter the fair, recruiters are watching you. They take note of how you dress, how you behave, how you interact with your friends and with other recruiters.
Walk Through Once: Identify the locations of your selected employers but be open to others that attract your interest. If you’re still feeling less than confident, select one of your lower-choice employers so you can develop a level of comfort speaking with them before moving on to your top selections.
Waiting in Line: Eavesdrop politely on the conversations taking place ahead of you so when it’s your turn, you don’t go over the same ground. Try and get a feel for how long the recruiter likes to spend with each person.
Approaching an Organization: It can be intimidating to approach and introduce yourself to a recruiter. Students often say introductions at career fairs are weird, unnatural, or forced. It helps if you remember the recruiter is here to meet you, so don’t be shy! Offer a firm handshake, and deliver your introduction. Remember, be direct. If you’re
Research: Prepare yourself by visiting the websites of each employer on your list. Review their history, press releases, rankings, values/mission statements, and jobs/career pages. Be prepared to discuss why you want to work for them.
Make Your Resume A Top Priority: Craft a professional-looking resume that really sells your strengths, experience, and accomplishments. Allow plenty of time for editing and feedback. You can have a general resume to hand out, but if you really want to make a great impression, make different versions of your resume that target the specific industry or job that interests you. Make sure you give the right resume to the right organization!
Practice, Practice, Practice: How comfortable are you introducing yourself to a complete stranger and sharing information about yourself? You have a short period of time to make an impression with a recruiter, so you need to be able to efficiently introduce yourself and let them know your interests and qualifications. Practice a short thirty-second to one-minute personal introduction that you can present easily while still sounding natural. Things to include:
• Your name
• Your ASU program/major
• When you are graduating
• What you are looking for (more information, full-time employment, an internship)
• Your area of interest with the organization and how your skills (or personal qualities or experience) relate to that area
interested in a certain position, let them know. If you find yourself talking incessantly and you see them start to look around the room, at their watch, or the person behind you, take the cue and bring the conversation to a close.
Talking to the Recruiter: Don’t talk over the recruiter’s shoulder, at the ground, up in the air, or at the free stuff that is on the table! Make eye contact and don’t be afraid to let your enthusiasm show. Being truly passionate about the employer and the opportunities they have to offer can make all the difference.
Take Notes: Collect business cards from everyone you speak with and use the reverse to make notes about your last conversation. The more people you meet, the more your memory is likely to become a blur. Jot down key points about the conversation (including anything you may have said you would do), maybe something unique about the interviewer, and whether or not they said it was okay to follow up with an email or phone call.

Job Fair Success Checklist

Plan and Prepare Before the Fair

Visit Sun Devil Career Link (asu.edu/career). Review the list of companies attending the fair and determine companies of interest and which companies are conducting employer recruiting info sessions.
Prepare a 30 second commercial which highlights of who you are and what you want.
Follow companies of interest on LinkedIn
Rehearse responses to standard interview questions.
Determine which professional attire you will wear: pinterest.com/ asucareers.
Prepare essential items to take to the fair:
a letter-sized padfolio with note pad and pen
more than enough copies of your resume
your research notes on companies participating in the fair
a compact professional portfolio of your work samples (optional)
prepare a business card using the templates provided through the ASU Career Guide
Day of the Fair

Follow Up
Check in at the candidate registration table to pick up a name tag and a copy of the fair layout.
Review the information and organize a list of employers you plan to visit, in order of priority.
Practice your 30 second commercial with a few employers before approaching your top picks.
Develop a plan which includes taking breaks to assure that you will look and feel your best.

Thank-You Note: Send a thank-you note within 24 hours to everyone you spoke with. This is a little thing that really makes a difference! Almost everyone has the intention, but very few actually get around to it. Don’t know what to write? See information on thankyou letters for help. It doesn’t have to be fancy, the point is to remind them of who you are and let them know you’re serious about your job search. Whether or not you’re offered an interview (and certainly after you’ve had one) it’s often a good idea to write to the recruiter to remind him or her of your meeting. The only time to ignore this advice is if an employer asked you specifically not to make follow up contact.

Watch the traffic flow in the room and if a line seems too long, it may be more efficient to select another employer.
Review the information about the employer before you approach them.
Ask for the business card of each contact.
Following Up After the Fair

Write thank you e-mails within 24 hours to those recruiters you visited at the job fair.
Keep accurate records of your contacts with companies. Include dates of your letters or telephone calls and copies of all application materials you send.

conversation with the employer.
• Conduct yourself professionally at all times, you are on stage even as you stand in line or move about the fair.
• Immediately following the interaction, make notes on topics of conversation, contact names and follow-up procedures. Then prepare for your next employer contact.
Final Tips
Reflect: Career success doesn’t just involve getting the job you want but working for an organization that shares your values and provides an enjoyable environment. Think about your connection with each recruiter. To what extent could you see yourself working alongside them? What impression did they give about the kind of people who fit their work-place culture?
Be Realistic: Don’t expect to get an immediate job offer based on a relatively short (and public) discussion with recruiters. Consider the career fair experience as one of many touch points on your road to exploring one or several compelling career paths.
• Focus on learning as much as you can about what em ployers are looking for in the people they hire.
• Networking is key!!! The primary benefit of participation in a job fair is to collect information and make contacts.
