“The most rewarding part of my job is transforming a student’s attitude towards school as a whole and making them excited to come in each day and enthusiastic about learning,” she said.

Wayne Tartar, the son of a music teacher, knew he wanted to follow in his mother’s footsteps since high school. He fulfilled this goal many times over, building a teaching career spanning over 40 years, much of it within the Scottsdale Elementary School District.

Although he has been at Sequoya Elementary for the past decade, Tartar spent much of his career in the high school ranks, teaching at Saguaro, Desert Mountain and Chaparral high schools. He also spent time at Mountainside Middle School.

“I want them to have fun and joy music, so I put a lot of passion and energy into it and just have them experience as many different types of music as possible,” Tartar said.

As an educator for 14 years, Jodi Hammond worked in the Special Education Department at Chaparral High School for four years after working for two years in Yuma.

“My goal is for special-ed kids to have the same access to everything other kids have,” said Hammond, who also oversees the American Sign Language Student Club, where she not only teaches people how to sign but also helps others understand the culture and community surrounding ASL. “I have a lot of kids who are nonverbal,” she said.

“I’ve just found in the past using sign language really helps communicate with those kids and let them know you don’t have to be able to speak in order to communicate.”

“My main thing is - if kids are having fun, they learn better. And so that’s always been my first thing. I joke around with the kids a lot. They love it, but also it really helps them succeed and learn,” she said.

Artie the Artichoke became Scottsdale Community College’s mascot not long after it opened at its present location in 1970, with an enrollment of 948 students – a tenth of its current student population.

Born during a period of student unrest, Artie was adopted as the school’s mascot to express a difference of opinion concerning budget priorities. Originally intended to be a source of embarrassment, Artie has been embraced by students, athletes, staff and the community as a beloved character after two student body elections solidified Artie’s place on campus and as an official representative of the college.

Weird as the choice might be, Artie the Artichoke has made a memorable impression on the Scottsdale community. Teams often call themselves “The Fighting Artichokes” and during parades in Old Town Scottsdale, spectators readily cheer, “Here comes Artie!”
