City in front of water resource concerns BY CAROLYN DRYER Peoria Times Editor
Almost a week before Gov. Doug Ducey voiced concerns about the need for the state to address its water resource issues, Peoria City Council was sitting in a study session to hear a staff presentation about drought management. Drought is not a new issue; it’s been around since the early days of statehood. It became a decades-long discussion in the 1960s and 1970s when late Arizona U.S. Sen. Carl Hayden led the way to a settlement that allotted various acre feet of water to states along the Colorado River.

The city of Peoria staff on January 8 reiterated what has been reported in the past: The city is well-positioned to deliver water to serve the needs of anticipated growth. City Manager Jeff Tyne started the study session and said, “Timing couldn’t be more perfect.” indicating the governor’s State of the State Address would be covering the water situation. Deputy City Manager Erik Strunk noted how complicated the water situation is and how the city has positioned itself to deal with whatever comes. He said Peoria and the rest of the southwest has been in a drought for 20 years, but has also experienced “phenomenal growth.”
Strunk said the city has put into place sound water policies to handle future water issues. He reminded the mayor and council that the Colorado River no longer has enough water to provide for future needs and growth. He said the federal government has issued a challenge to Arizona to revise its demands, and, as a result, various entities (Peoria included) are set to come up with a drought management plan by January 31. Acting Water Services Director Tammy Shreeve explained acre foot to council before proceeding. She said an acre foot
