It is so difficult to write this when, all around me, our beautiful island is going through such a tumultous time. Worrying revelations are made on a daily basis – revelations that, anywhere else, would have lead to numerous resignations by now. At the time of going to print, there hasn’t been one single resignation for the sorry state of affairs that Malta has been thrown in. I highly doubt that by the time you read this, anything will have changed. Though hope springs eternal, of course. When you have the entire international press of the democratic world constantly putting your country under the spotlight, and respected journalists’ reports peppered with words like ‘corruption’, ‘untenable’ and ‘rule of law threatened’, then you must know that something is very, very wrong. Even worse, when you have the world’s most respected writers, the likes of Salman Rushdie, Margaret Atwood and Neil Gaiman, censuring your administration, then you should really know that the word ‘untenable’ is not hyperbole. These are people who only weigh in on the most serious of political matters, and certainly have zero interest in the petty partisan squabbles that seem to be our daily bread and butter. And yet, life seems to be going on with few to no consequences in a shocking display of fake normality. Development permits

continue being dished out like pastizzi – and how. Meantime the consequences of all this greed continues to manifest itself in many forms. In our once-gorgeous Mediterranean Sea, big patches of water change from turquoise to a sickly, muddy, brown. Parts of the historic Cittadella, in Gozo, have succumbed to the works that are being carried in the vicinity. And many continue to act with impunity – I mean, we had someone literally stick three plastic chairs to the quay in Mellieħa, so they can enjoy a spot of fishing and ħobż biż-żejt in total chill. You couldn’t make this up, if you tried. Malta is fast descending into surrealism. Looking at the conflicting news headlines and the things that go on around me, I’m not sure whether I’m still living in the real world or whether I’m trapped in some nightmare parallel universe. In the meantime, the consortium of brave journalists making up the #DaphneProject and #Forbidden Stories – of which The Times of Malta forms part – continue to strive to deliver the facts to us. By the time this magazine comes out, what else will have been uncovered? Political responsibility needs to be shouldered fast, before more damage is dealt to the country.

For starters, Ru Paul’s Drag Race has become a popular fixture on many a TV viewing schedule, and the idea of men dressing up as women and enjoying the glamour that comes with it has been loved by audiences for decades. Plus, the good old Maltese pantomime springs to mind too. On the flip side, drag kings are less well known – although no less fun and fascinating. The term itself was first used in print in 1972, although it is assumed that women have been dressing up as men for a lot longer. One performer leading the way today is drag king champion Lucy Jane Parkinson. Drag kinging as her alter ego LoUis CYfer, Lucy Jane is currently preparing to perform in the award-winning

But what story does it tell, I wonder. “The show is about a young teenager who believes she is being communicated with by a saint who was burned at the stake,” the performer explains. “This ‘thing’ tells her to go to see King Charles to convince him to give her the French army and then fight against the British. In order to do this she must be able to travel dressed as a man, to ensure her safety. Then, as soon as she begins to present as masculine, something within Joan awakens and it becomes a force that cannot be tamed.” The show has travelled and been successful in a variety of locations around the world. Lucy Jane’s favourites include Sydney, where they performed as part of the Mardi Gras festival. “It was such an honour to be invited to perform there and to celebrate the

the shape of its structure is designed to resemble the sail of a ship”. In the evening we headed to the Dubai Fountain which is a must-see. Here, one can witness a spectacle of light and music where you have water shooting up skywards whilst also seemingly in synch with the music, as it is illuminated by more than 6000 lights. For me, it was literally a case this experience must be seen to be believed. Another highlight of our trip was most certainly the desert safari. Such a unique sensation being in a sea of sand. I was so captivated by the stillness and the serenity that the Dubai desert had to offer that it was like I could get in touch with my inner self. It triggered in me a feeling of contentedness,

With regards to family entertainment what they have done here in Dubai is phenomenal

as if time stood still. The sand was so soft and gentle to the touch! This contrasted beautifully with the dynamics and the hype of Dubai city especially knowing that all that was just 30 minutes away – modern architecture, sky scrapers and towering buildings. Seeing the dunes up close and personal really opened my eyes to see it in a different perspective. I was so overwhelmed by its infinity. It was a wonderful experience especially the roller-coaster ride that got us to our destination in the midst of the desert. Driving up and down the dunes was very thrilling, to put it mildly, and most certainly added to the excitement of this trip. To end the evening, we attended a safari camp where a barbecue buffet meal was served accompanied by traditional entertainment. Shopping wasn’t high on our priority list on this trip, since our itinerary didn’t really allow it. Although I classify myself as a potential shopaholic, I do make it a point not to have any kind of trip just shopping-oriented. Then again, being in Dubai Rachel insisted that visiting The Dubai Mall was a must. So I asked Rachel what was so special about this mall when compared to any other mall in the world? “This much sought-after mall offers over 1200 shops and eateries. These people have really managed to come a long way. Are you aware that Eiffel Tower is visited by some seven million people, Time Square in New York is visited by some 42 million and the Dubai Mall is today visited by over 80 million people per year. It has become the most visited place on Earth.” What awaited us certainly exceeded my expectations. There is absolutely anything an avid shopper could ever dream of and more! The place was vibrant. Spread evenly over four floors, the Mall can boast a unique shopping experience where one can find diverse retail outlets all set up very attractively. What struck me most was the fact that retail prices across the board ranged from affordable to designer wear prices, thus it is entirely up to the individual to determine a budget. One thing that was on my mind, especially because I had heard different versions from different people, was culturerelated misconceptions about attire in Dubai. What is acceptable and what is a definite no-no?

Rachel states: “Without going deeply into the matter, it would suffice to say that there are no real strict rules. The city is so cosmopolitan and multicultural, that to a certain extent, nothing stands out or is out of line. Summer vacation wear, bathing suits, and evening dresses are all widely worn and accepted. It goes without saying that one has to be respectful of the culture and the locals for the sake of etiquette.” The cleanliness in Dubai is incredible. You just do not see any form of litter lying around, and the locals and tourists who visit Dubai feel compelled to comply to the norm as everywhere spells flawless. The attention to detail in whatever you see, is proof of the impeccable place Dubai is. This leads me to ask Rachel how many times she has visited Dubai in the 20 years and what has made her return over and over again even now that she has a family, including two young boys? “I have lost count of the times I have come to Dubai, yet all I can say is that whether its for work or pleasure I cannot get enough of it. On a professional level Dubai inspires me like no other. Nothing is impossible here, I feel so energised when I am here and return to Malta always wanting to do more and more. As the saying goes, “the sky is the limit” yet, here in Dubai, one can comfortably say that there are absolutely no limits at all. “With regards to family entertainment what they have done here in Dubai is phenomenal. They have transformed it into the newest World’s Theme Park Capital. It’s like a second home for my family and boys. In fact, our annual holiday since they were young has always been Dubai. Even though we have travelled so many times here, there is always so much more to do and see. New family attractions are constantly being launched so much so, that Dubai has

Isabella agrees and says that, even though she has met friends who had a negative experience after smoking Spice, the side effects were not the same. “Some experienced nausea and dizziness, others just started to throw up. It’s hard to say how one will be effected because the compound inside the drug changes simply to adhere on the grey side of the law.” So, is synthetic cannabis legal? Dr Grech explains that sometimes it takes a while for a chemical to go through the legal process of actually becoming illegal. “At times we find that these lab-created drugs are imported before the substance is made illegal. The ingredients inside these synthetic cannabinoids are always changing and, even though most drugs can be detected via a urine sample, newly added chemicals often go undetected.” Isabella who first started using Spice at 19 years of age, says the drug is imported in small bags that

are sold as legal incense. “Like many other teenagers I started off by smoking natural Marijuana when I was 15 and, even though I didn’t feel great afterwards, I was still highly addicted. The stuff wasn’t easily found back then and this made me crave it even more. I moved on to Spice in the last year and a half. At first I smoked it out of curiosity but somehow I still found myself addicted to it.” Every year a number of people are admitted to Mount Carmel or Mater Dei Hospital suffering from the harmful side effects associated with this drug. “Roughly we see five to 10 cases a year, however there are definitely more cases which go undiagnosed. The most common symptom is psychosis, where drug users experience delusions and hallucinations. Paranoia is also a very common symptom.”

How it’s done Drug expert Godwin Sammut explained in a report on The Times of Malta last year how chemicals are sprayed onto edible leaves in order to create synthetic cannabis. It is the chemicals that are the active ingredient mimicking the effects of the real plant. It is believed that the drug is no longer being simply imported and that it is actually being manufactured on the island. As examples of the chemicals used in synthetic cannabis, Sammut mentions titanium dioxide, a whitening agent used in paint. Many of these agents are not illegal and are much cheaper than their natural counterpart, rendering the problem more serious.

What happens when you use synthetic cannabinoids Synthetic cannabinoids users report similar effects to those experienced after smoking natural Marijuana. These include elevated mood, relaxation and altered perceptions and awareness of surrounding objects and conditions. Psychotic symptoms include paranoia – extreme distrust of others, severe anxiety, confusion and hallucinations (imagined sensations and images). Other health effects include a rapid heart rate, vomiting, violent behaviour and suicidal thoughts. Withdrawal symptoms include headaches, anxiety, depression and irritability.

Addiction is a real killer.”

It’s the most advanced type of laser vision correction, and is only available in Malta at the Saint James Eye Clinic. The Femto Laser technology is making waves internationally with all those wanting to get rid of their specs permanently, and it is easy to see why. As Clinic Manager Andrei Camenzuli explained, prior to the advent of Femto Laser technology, vision correction procedures were associated with a degree of pain, a considerable recovery period and higher risks of complications. Surface ablation (PRK) was the only available procedure that used to be carried out in Malta before the introduction of this advanced technology. Femto technology, instead, offers immediate visual recovery, without any pain or recovery time. The way it works is simple: femtosecond laser creates millions of plasma bubbles beneath the surface of the cornea to create femto assisted incisions as planned prior to surgery by our expert surgeons and clinical staff. Femto second laser enables us to perform two of the most advanced surgeries available in the world at the moment, namely Femto Lasik and SMILE surgery. Otto Warmbier died the day we took our morning flight from Beijing to Pyongyang. I had been feeling increasingly uneasy as our travel-group’s departure date approached and tensions kept rising over North Korea. Otto’s tragedy cemented my anxiety. I tried to play it down. But visions of me pleading with North Korean authorities to detain me but let 18-year old Jordan - my son and travelling companion - return home safely, raced through my brain. In many ways, we were all Otto Warmbiers, enthusiastic travellers in search of a peep into the world’s most isolationist state, and prone to the vagaries of collecting lasting mementos that would etch the memory of the experience indelibly and forever into our system. Otto died as a consequence of such a quest approached incorrectly, an ostensibly trivial, easily pardonable error of judgement. A chill went down my spine. Could something as tragic happen to one of us? Group morale was low. Air Koryo, North Korea’s national airline, are tucked away in a remote, commotion-free corner of Beijing’s modern and functional Capital International Airport. How apt, I thought, an isolated check-in for an isolated state. Poetic coincidence? Our first encounter with North Koreans – ground staff and the few other passengers in the queue, was disappointingly normal. I’m not sure what I was expecting. Crop-haired clones in dreary blue-grey parkas, perhaps? Stern military personnel with defiant faces? Growling, menacing sniffer-dogs? Whatever perceived peculiarity or threat it might have been, there was none of it here. The staff was courteous, professional and smartly-dressed. Female passengers wore graceful, if somewhat conservative, outfits. Some male passengers were fullysuited – ah the golden days of travel when everyone dressed up, rather than down, for a flight! sad faces around, just normal people queueing normally at a normal check-in counter. With one significant, if barely noticeable, difference – passengers and staff all wore a pin displaying two of the Great Leaders on their lapels or shirt pockets. ‘The Great Leaders’ is the collective title given to the paternal lineage of the Kim family, which forms the cult backbone of the DPRK – the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, as North Korea prefers calling itself. Each leader, but especially Grandfather Kim Il Sung, has his own other titles of respect, lavishly bestowed upon them by their people in token of professed respect: Eternal, Beloved, Marshal, Respected, Brilliant, Unique, Glorious, Superior… A long list indeed, with Dear, Wise, and Supreme being the most commonly used in everyday reference. Their dynastic lineage hails from Dear Leader Kim Il Sung, revolutionary hero and founder of Fatherland from the 50s, succeeded by his son, Wise Leader Kim Jong Il in 1994. Jong Il’s son, current Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un, took over leadership in 2011 after his abrupt death. Jong Un is the household image on our TVs in the current abundant news on North Korea. Educated in Switzerland and a graduate of the DPRK’s Kim Il Sung Military University, Jong Il, born 1941, had for years been groomed into his current tenure by his father, with frequent official duties and accelerated military rank promotions. Kim is a common surname in the DPRK – every other native we met seemed to be called Kim-something – family name always first. Lapel pins, always worn on the left – symbolically close to the heart – usually show two leaders (grandfather and father). Some older versions, showing only grandfather Kim, are still worn. The custom seems to extend only to deceased leaders. But one wonders about possibilities when current Kim joins their ranks

badges of all three? When the new dual-Kim pin was first produced officially by the Mansudae Art Studio in the aftermath of Grandfather Kim Il Sung’s death, the Workers’ Party (the single, ruling party) only distributed it to high-ranking officials. Ordinary citizens, eager to publicly confirm their devotion to the state, started buying the pins to replace their mono-Kim ones. A market was created overnight and prices shot up. China has since joined the bandwagon, and counterfeit pins are available on the black-market. Lapel pins are a mandatory accessory for all adults when in public. Failure to comply has potentially serious repercussions. It is rumoured Kim Jong Un’s wife, no less, vanished for over a month some years ago after she was seen in public without her pin. Back home, internet restored (access is highly restricted and expensive in the DPRK) and freshly armed with on-the-ground experience, I wanted to pay tribute to Otto – the man and his sad, sad story. Was there anything, anything at all, that might have justified one tiny bit of the fatally disproportionate punishment he had received? Articles and images popped up in droves. One picture stood out, that of a handcuffed, white-jacketed,

explanation. A closer look at the guards revealed those pins – the twin-effigy version – on their lapels, pompously above their stripe decorations. Big Brother omnipresence. Koryo Air Koryo’s reputation is not great. Far from it. In 2006, they were banned from flying in the EU following inspections on their Russian-built planes in Germany and France. However, our flight was very good – spotless, well-appointed cabin, fully-functional personal-space controls, subdued noise levels, immaculately dressed, young and good-looking hostesses, tasty snack…no trace of old age,

but I take it a couple of steps further by subjecting it to lots of different combinations of chemicals and sometimes also heat.

What made you wake up one day and say: I want to create art out of metal (in this particular way)?

Some of the copper books that form part of the EX LIBRIS exhibition

Well, no sane person would, would they? (she says with a laugh). It certainly wasn’t a logical result of what I had done before it, and it wasn’t a well-considered decision. But, when it happened, it was utterly unavoidable. I started attending art school in Lund in southern Sweden in 1996. We were supposed to become familiar with as many techniques and media as possible, not find a favourite and abandon all others. I really liked copper printing. Allow me to get technical very briefly here, because this is how it all started. To make a copper print you first take a sheet of copper and then you need to create grooves in it. You either engrave it using tools, or you cover it with a resist (which will protect it from etching chemicals), you scratch through the resist revealing the copper and then let an etchant do the engraving for you. After it’s all done and the copper has been cleaned you rub oil paint into it. It’ll embed itself in the etched or engraved areas and by then pressing the copper against a sheet of moistened paper, the oil paint is transferred and you get the result: a copper print. Repeating the process you can get a couple of 100 of them. The copper plate is not really part of the artwork, it’s a tool. Well, after doing lots and

So what are the biggest challenges you face? There are always challenges, but I have to say they were harder in the beginning. When I started as a full time artist 17 years ago I had

a ridiculous struggle for several years, working 80 hours a week and making a loss. Back then, the main challenge was to just persist and keep going and hope things would get better before my meagre savings ran out. No longer struggling constantly to make ends meet – and what a relief that is! – the challenges are of a different nature now. A 100 ideas and only time to realize seven of them. And, of course, the exciting challenge of constantly being right on the edge of my ability, balancing and pushing it and exploring. The moment Ex Libris finishes, I will dive into an important project which will demand everything I’ve got, I can’t talk about it yet, but it’s a challenge I’m proud to take on and eager to do my absolute best with. Can you tell us a few words about Ex Libris? Ex Libris is truly a labour of love. It started years ago, with the central inspiration being the Bibliotheca and its centuries old books, which deal with metal, metallurgy, chemistry and alchemy. I’m fascinated both by the scientific content and the aesthetic qualities of these incredible books. They have inspired artworks created from copper, bronze and brass in the form of metal books and scrolls, as well as other artefacts containing text. In many cases, I have etched text so deeply into metal sheets that it is uncertain whether it will last forever or, on the other hand, disintegrate, much like the actual books themselves at the Bibliotheca. You could say that I am using the very materials described in these books to explore the inspiration the books themselves in turn invoke. To me, the exhibition bridges the past with the present. I have sourced and studied books from the library’s collections dealing with metals, chemistry and alchemy and a selection of these books will form part of the exhibition. What are typical reactions to your work from people who have never encountered it before? I am immensely grateful to say that it seems a lot of people share my fascination with my metals! I think it’s impossible (and not desirable either) to make something everybody likes and, of course, there are people who have other preferences in art and that’s as it should be. But I’m thrilled that so many people are touched by what I do... I get all kinds of reactions, everything from exclamations, to quiet tears from overflowing emotions, to people liking it so much they want to own it and see it every day. It is a powerful feeling that I am not alone in caring about these metals and the art that results. I could’ve easily been “that weird one who does something or other with metal”, with people shaking their heads in my direction with half a smile. It means the world to me that that is not the case, and that others, too, really care about what I pour my heart and soul into. Ex LIbris runs at the National Library, Valletta between May 7 and June 2.

RUM DIPLOMÁTICO LAUNCHES IN MALTA

WORDS BY ANNA MARIE GALEA

Pouring a glass of Diplomático Reserva Exclusiva

During an exclusive event held in the lavish ‘Heaven’ section of Alchemy bar in Valletta, a few lucky guests recently had the opportunity to meet the CEO Jose Ballesteros and one of the Master Blenders Nelson Hernandez of legendary Venezuelan fine rum Diplomático and taste some of their finest products. Exported to over 74 countries and constantly broadening their legion of fans, Diplomático rums are made to be enjoyed neat or in the most sophisticated cocktails. It is little wonder that their company tagline invites connoisseurs of fine food and drink to ‘Rediscover Rum, Discover Diplomático’. The rums are aged in different casks and subjected to different conditions based on the final product which is to be achieved. The master blender is adamant on a particular point: “Once we put our rum in the caskets, no one touches it except the weather and the wood.” José R Ballesteros Although Diplomático offers several excellent ranges, the one that we sampled on the night was the house’s ‘Tradition’ range. Combining Hispanic (Column), Canadian (Batch Kettle) and British (Pot Still) traditional distillation methods, this refined selection consists of the Mantuano, Planas and Reserva Exclusiva rums. Aged for up to eight years in White Oak casks which were previously used to age bourbons and maltwhisky, the dark, honeyed Mantuano was our first rum of the night, followed by the clear and creamy to the taste six year aged finished in charcoal filter Planas, with its notes of coffee and coconut. Rounding off this The Tradition range range, and my favourite of the night, is the Reserva Exclusiva: taking 12 years to produce, the Reserva Exclusiva unwraps its complexity in one’s palate with its sweet notes of maple syrup, orange peel and brown sugar and leaves more than a lasting impression. The cherry on the cake? Tasting some classic cocktails with a Diplomático twist, such as Negroni using Mantuano instead of gin; Naked But Not Quite using Planas instead of gin; and Old Fashioned using Reserva Exclusiva instead of Mixologist Atilla Felhosi whisky.

Speaking about EPALE specifically, Mahira explains that this stands for the Electronic Platform for Adult Learning in Europe – an online platform for all professionals interested in the adult education field. It is a project participated in by 36 European and non-European countries, all of whom share their knowledge. Locally, the Directorate is responsible for achieving EPALE’s main aim of distributing information about the platform among learning professionals in Malta. “Initiatives like EPALE can help adult educators, and others involved in the field, to liaise with similar professionals in other countries,” Spiteri continues. “In fact, EPALE targets a variety of different people, including service providers, educators, policy makers, educational institutions, researchers, employers, ministries and local councils.” By bringing so many stakeholders to the table, EPALE ensures that a variety of perspectives are incorporated, which helps to increase the validity of its content. SAILING

Set up in 1835, the Royal Malta Yacht Club (RMYC) has always been at the forefront of the yachting and sailing scene on the Islands – a position it still holds today as the only club of its kind. Over these past 183 years, however, its role has changed and evolved depending on what the sport needed: In 1975, for example, it was a founding member of the Malta Sailing Federation (the national governing body for the sport) while, as more foreigners come to Malta with their boats, the Club has now come to serve as a contact point. Of course, on an island like Malta, whose history and identity are so linked to the sea, having such a Club helps those who live here and love sailing and yachting have a base. And it’s with that in mind, that the RMYC’s latest project, dubbed the Sport Boats Class (SBC), is shaping up.

ThIs TyPe Of SaIlInG Is MuCh MoRe AfFoRdAbLe ThAn WiTh ThE BiGgEr ClAsSeS Of BoAtS “When looking at the yachting scene in Malta, we realised that there was a gap in the local circuit, and that the younger generation – and people who, like us, refuse to grow up – are not being catered for,” says Robert Ciantar, who is on the SBC board. “See, while there are many races taking place each year, there isn’t much happening for the smaller yachts and sailing boats.” For that reason, the SBC has been specifically set-up to organise a monthly event for sail-powered boats that range between 20 and 30 feet, weigh less than two tonnes, and which can be manned by a skipper and

two-to-three crew members. More importantly, the Club is so set on helping the scene grow, that it’s also looking to put in touch boat owners and enthusiasts looking to help in the races. “The Yacht Club has always been open to this idea, but it had never materialised until now,” adds Commodore Godwin Zammit. “And, now that the project has been launched, we’re keen on ensuring that this is as inclusive as it possibly can be, so much so that those who apply don’t need to be members of the Club or even have their own boat.” While places for those without a boat are limited and cannot be guaranteed – ultimately, it’s the prerogative of the boat owner – there is no limit to how many sport boat owners join the races. And it doesn’t matter what design your sport boat is, as for this particular class, the RMYC is happy to let different boats that fall within that category race against each other. “We’re currently also in talks with the Malta Young Sailors Club and Birżebbuga Sailing Club to get more young people from across Malta participating in these races,” continues Adrian Gauci Borda, a subcommittee and organising member, who, together with Matthew Tabone Ferrante and Luca Lacitignola, completes the subcommittee board.

The RMYC, which currently has around 650 paying members, has long been working to bring yachting and sailing to the fore; particularly since, as the board members point out, the number of people who take part in the sport is not high when compared to the amount of people who own boats on the island. This, they continue, may be down to many factors, including the fact that sailing and yachting are sometimes labelled as something for the upper classes. “This type of sailing is much more affordable than with the bigger classes of boats, and through this project we hope to bring together young people who can work together to create teams for such races,” the Commodore continues. “Sailing, in fact,

The only fee paid by participants is for the actual races, and the money goes to ensuring participants remain safe and cared for by having dinghies and personnel on stand-by in case of an emergency, fuel, and the social aspect of the event, among other things. The only other pre-requisite is that all those who join have to be at least 16 years of age,” Robert concludes. Although this may not be a groundbreaking exercise, the Sport Boats Class project might prove vital for the growth of Malta’s yachting and sailing scene. Indeed, it is beautiful to see such a Club with so much heritage actually pushing towards creating more inclusive events. Then, every Tuesday, a lecturer from the University of Malta goes to the rest home to give a talk about Malta and its culture and history, while every Wednesday trumpeter Mario heads there to give a recital. Once a month, the Sisters also organise a joint birthday party for all those celebrating their birthday that month with everyone joining in. And they also go out sightseeing before enjoying a complimentary meal in different hotels on a monthly basis, too – something Mother Philomena is incredibly grateful for. Last but certainly not least, Mgr. Lawrence Gatt, who lives in the home, also makes it possible for the residents to have their daily Mass and someone to hear confession. To keep the rest home working like clockwork, the Sisters work tirelessly themselves, together with an additional 42 employees, which include seven full-time nurses. Needless to say, ensuring that the residents continue to lead a dignified life which gives them all they need, does not come cheap. “It costs between €70,000 to €80,000 to run the rest home,” Mother Philomena explains. “The salaries take up a lot of our money, and then we have to pay for repairs in the home… In a building of this size, there is always something which needs fixing, particularly the roof, which has given us a lot of problems!” The residents at the Little Sisters of the Poor only pledge their monthly pensions to the rest home; and considering all of them come from very disadvantageous backgrounds, those pensions are always from the lowest bracket. Apart from that, the Sisters head out to supermarkets regularly, and hand out five-item shopping lists to anyone willing to help out. The rest of the money comes from donations from people and companies, which makes meeting the figures above quite the feat… But the Sisters never give up! There are currently 90 people on the waiting list, and many more who were turned down for various reasons. Indeed, it’s a very exclusive rest home in a way, because it is those who are the poorest, who have very little to give back, who don’t have inheritances to leave the Sisters, that are given priority. That, after all, was the dream and the life’s work of Sister Jeanne Gaughan, who founded the congregation of the Little Sisters of the Poor in Brittany, France, in 1839 after she gave an old, homeless woman her bed for the night. “We work very hard on ensuring that those who come here to live, genuinely need the help,” she continues. “The process we take is a long one, but we find it necessary to ensure that we are being fair. “Normally, it all starts with a person who is recommended to us by their family, friends or parish priest. Having said that, it’s also important that families are transparent with us, particular if the old person has the means to be cared for. “Of course, we would love to help everyone, and our convent is open to anyone who needs solace, someone to talk to, or somewhere to turn to. But we also need to ensure that it is not money that helps people get refuge here. We are here to help the neediest, and we are sure God will bless our house for it.” Having been to the convent, it’s really easy to see why so many would want to be taken care of here: it’s clean, it’s comfortable and it’s loving. Even just seeing a Sister from

But the Sisters can’t do it without our help. “I would love to be able to give the residents comfortable armchairs with a high-back so that they can be more comfortable when they’re reading or watching TV… And we also desperately need hoists to be able to make it easier for the Sisters and workers to help the more immobile residents. Having said that, the Maltese have always proven themselves to be generous, and we have no doubt that they will continue to be so.” As I head out through the gate I came in from, it becomes clear that while this rest home is nestled almost away from public view, the nuns know as much as we do, if not

A kitten’s growth takes place in two distinct phases:

TOO OLD FOR MOTHER’S MILK. TOO YOUNG FOR SOLID FOOD. Baby cats only become kittens at three months. They gain proper teeth. Their digestive system becomes more robust. And they begin to grow at a more stable rate. Because the differences are so great, ROYAL CANIN® have developed balanced diets for both baby cats and kittens. MUSIC

Making a scene HELPING A FLEDGLING SCENE THRIVE, 215 COLLECTIVE ARE MAKING A LOT OF NOISE WITH LOCAL HIP HOP LOVERS. IVAN BORG CATCHES UP WITH THE THREE ARTISTS.

MUSIC

The 215 Collective is hard to define. In helping to establish PHOTOS: CHRIS SANT FOURNIER

Malta’s fledgling hip-hip scene, the young artists are breaking new ground, and figuring things out in an environment where there are no real past masters and no real roadmap to follow. The local hip-hop scene is still in its relative infancy, but it’s clearly taken root. There’s a very definite momentum building up, with a community of artists starting to find each other, often by chance – but also by virtue of being drawn to the same Tale parties and passing the mic to one another. The 215 Collective is at the very centre of the Maltese hip-hop community. It’s not a group in the true sense of the word. They’re a collection of individual artists, albeit a very closely-knit one – and they’re clearly reaping the rewards of collaboration. I met the three leading lights of collective – Lydon Borg Bonaci (a.k.a. Eddie Fresco), Aidan Spiteri-Caruana (a.k.a. Caro) and Yannick Yankam (just Yannick) – at the Msida skatepark, where they’d previously shot one of their first videos. Aidan is relatively soft spoken, and initially comes across as quite shy. He explains how he moved to Malta as a kid, and grew up here. “My mother’s from London, got family there as well. That’s where the accent comes from,” Aidan quips. “I’ve been doing music for a year and half now”. Yannick, on the other hand, is a very confident young man and wears his ambition on his sleeve. He balances his music career with his studies, and somehow also finds the time to play league football. He tells me his father is from Cameroon, but he’s been living in Malta all his life. “I’m fully Maltese,” Lydon jokes. “Boring”… Lydon’s sense of humour belies the fact he’s the glue guy that keeps the crew together, and has a huge influence on the sound they go for. “It’s very important for me to focus on sound,” Lydon explains. “You get someone’s attention by the vibe you’re giving them.” He puts in an enormous amount of work beyond actually rapping on the tracks, and his attention to detail really comes to the fore in this regard. “Eighty per cent of what comes out is all Lydon,” Aidan concedes. “We have to give him a tonne of credit for what he does.” I ask them if there’s any special meaning behind the group’s name. Lydon explains that it’s actually a tribute to a relative who he feels empowered him to chase his dream – it refers to an address, the venue where it all came together for him. He’d already had the desire to make music, but it hadn’t worked out. It came to a point where Lydon’s desire to make music was driving him to distraction, not allowing him to focus on anything else. “When I met the others again, I was living with my aunt,” Lydon recalls. “It was either living with my aunt or going to a foster home. I named it 215 Collective as a sign of respect, for letting us do it in her home.”

LIVING Be the one who dares Muscats Motors, together with BMW Malta, recently launched the First-Ever BMW X2. After long months of preparation the Galvanic Gold X2 was finally seen casually hanging on the roof of Hugo’s Hotels, a sight which caught the attention of many people walking below. The cars were hoisted on top of the hotel in preparation for launch day on Friday. Although the winds did not fair for the cars that week, they were hosted up to the roof swiftly. The grand launch party was held at the magical Infinity by Hugo’s on Friday night, showing off some of the best views around St George’s Bay. Guests were welcomed with Moët & Chandon champagne at the entrance of the pool deck where two BMW X2’s were showcased. A reception followed, serving mouthwatering food and Hugo’s iconic items such as the mini burgers, tartlets and roulades. The eye-catching Gold X2, which was the star of the night was situated on top of the stunning infinity pool, whilst the Mineral White vehicle welcomed arriving guests next to the deck. BMW sales executives and representatives were present all through the night providing interested guests with an overview of the vehicle.
