It’s festival season W

elcome to our 20th issue of Newcastle Life magazine! As we move through spring and head into what could, fingers crossed, be another spectacular summer, Newcastle is gearing up for a season of fun, frolics and

festivals.

It’s a testament to our wonderful community that there are at least three major town events on the cards for us all to enjoy - and these are just in May! The ever popular Lymelight Festival started May off, with music, literature, poetry and parades to enjoy.

For those of you with a curiosity to feed, a Pint of Science Festival could be just up your street. This is your chance to learn about all things science -from the comfort of the local pub! Experts from Keele University and Staffordshire University will be talking all things science - see our what’s on page for more details.

Finally the town’s Jazz and Blues Festival will return at the end of the month - so grab a friend, sample a new drink and sit back and enjoy the tunes.

And it’s not just festivals in this edition - we’ve got Community Groups, dog walks,health awards, lottery winners, Queen’s honours and even robots! What a fantastic array of news, events and stories straight from the heart of our vibrant local community. Add to that quizzes, photos, what’s on pages, competitions and recipes - and you’ve got yourself a bumper issue!

You may also notice the beautiful bluebells on the front cover of this issue. I took this photo in nearby Keele University woods - the deciduous woodland, consisting mainly of oak and sycamore, has a poor ground flora which makes for a fine display of bluebells in the spring. I was lucky enough to stroll through at just the right time, and I was treated to a fantastic sea of blue as far as the eye could see. Truly stunning!

I hope you get the opportunity to get out and about and enjoy what our town has to offer this May and June.

Nello’s bem

Nello honoured by the Queen For services to Newcastle-under-Lyme

M

r Neil Baldwin, or to many, Nello, has been awarded the prestigious British Empire Medal for his Services to the Communities of Newcastle under Lyme.

Nello was made famous in the film Marvellous, which is about his life including his time as Stoke City Football Club’s kit-man.

His award was announced in The Queen’s New Year’s Honours, and at a special ceremony held at Keele University on Monday 8th April, he received his Medal from the Lord-Lieutenant, Mr Ian Dudson CBE KStJ on behalf of Her Majesty the Queen.

Speaking about his award, Mr Baldwin commented: “I am very happy to have received this award on this great occasion. It is a great honour for the Baldwin’s household and I would like to express my thanks to the Queen and all the Royal family for recognising me in such a way. I am really looking forward to attending the Garden Party at Buckingham Palace and celebrating my BEM at my inauguration on this great day.”

Ian Dudson Lord-Lieutenant of Staffordshire added: “The British Empire Medal is now fully re-established as a significant part of our Honours

system, often uniquely recognising voluntary contributions at a very local community level and within minority groups.

“I am delighted that Neil has been recognised in the last New Year honours list. His positive outlook, kindness and encouragement to all around him despite his disadvantages has enabled him to become a great role model for many people in similar situations. It is a fitting and ‘Marvellous’ recognition.”

Sir David Attenborough visits Keele

S

ir David Attenborough was the guest of honour at Keele University at the start of May, when he gave a very special 70th Anniversary Lecture on campus.

Known as the Godfather of natural history TV, David Attenborough has introduced generations to the world’s furry and feathered friends including the smash hit Life on Earth, which set the standard for the modern nature documentary, and more recently Blue Planet.

Beyond natural history he’s had a huge influence as a broadcaster, introducing colour TV when he was Controller of BBC Two. He presented a short talk to staff and students, followed by a questions and answers session, on the topic of sustainability.

Living with Rheumatoid Arthritis Support for Newcastle residents

W

ith around 1% of the UK population suffering with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), it is estimated that over 1000 people in Newcastle-under-Lyme will currently be living with the condition too.

Rheumatoid Arthritis can also affect anyone at any age – even children, in the form of Junior Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA). It is not always visible, and many patients do not share their diagnosis with friends or work colleagues. This means that hundreds of people across Newcastle could be suffering alone with their pain.

But there is help available.

For anyone living with RA or JIA in Newcastle, the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society (NRAS) has a support and information group which meets regularly at The Haywood Hospital in nearby Burslem.

The group is for anyone affected by the condition - so family members and friends are also very welcome. The group offers an opportunity to meet and to share experiences with others in a supportive and positive environment.

In addition to this, there are expert speakers at many of the meetings including: nurse specialists, physiotherapists, exercise specialists and rheumatology consultants. The group coordinators are always there to welcome everyone with a cup of coffee and a biscuit and to provide support to everyone.

Newcastle Life spoke to Trina Rule, a Rheumatoid Arthritis patient who also helps to coordinate the North Staffordshire NRAS group, about the impact of the condition. She explained: “There are many misconceptions surrounding this condition.

“Most people will be vaguely aware that it affects the joints, making them stiff, swollen and painful, but how many of us are aware that, in fact, RA is an autoimmune disease which can also affect the lungs, the heart and the eyes? The pain can be highly debilitating, and the associated fatigue can be crippling, both physically and emotionally.

“This general lack of knowledge can be frustrating to those living with the disease.

Common reactions from friends and acquaintances may include such responses as: ‘But that’s what old people get, isn’t it? Or ‘Oh yes,

I’ve got a bit of rheumatism in my knee’. The frequently asked question, ‘Does it get worse in cold weather?’ also indicates a lack of understanding that RA is a systemic disease and not just a ‘bit of a chill in the bones’.

“Given the nature of the disease and this general lack of understanding, it is not surprising that so many sufferers report a sense of isolation, particularly when they are first diagnosed.

“This is where the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society – NRAS – can be a wonderful means of support. The vision of this national organisation is to support everyone living with the impact of RA and JIA at the start and at every stage of their journey.

“They also provide reliable information through a wide range of literature as well as peerto-peer telephone support. In addition to this, they aim to empower all to have a voice and take control of their RA or JIA.” The meetings are held on the third Thursday of alternate months from 7pm-8.30pm.

The next meeting is on Thursday 16th May in the outpatients waiting area by the WVS café. This particular session will provide an opportunity to find out about what is on offer at The Haywood for those affected by RA. The meeting following this one will be Thursday 18th July at the same time and venue as above. The guest speaker at that meeting will be sharing the benefits of Tai Chi for RA. BLACKFRIARS PROBUS CLUB

New members appeal for professional and business club

lackfriars Probus Club is on the lookout for new members.

Probus is an abbreviation of the words professional and business, and the Newcastleunder-Lyme based club has members from many occupations.

The only requirement is that each member is a retired or semi-retired man who has had some measure of responsibility in their work.

Members join a Probus Club to meet with others having similar interests, who enjoy good food and fellowship, hearing addresses given by guest speakers on a variety of subjects and visiting places and organisations of specific appeal to members.

Probus member Donald Jaxon said: “Probus is non-political, non-sectarian and non-profit making.

“We have a wide post-retirement age range across our members and we share a meal and light-hearted conversations together around tables of up to eight diners.

“There are no joining fees and the annual subscription is minimal.”

The Blackfriars Probus Club meets at the Newcastle-under-Lyme Golf Club on the second Wednesday of each month, for a two course lunch followed by a presentation from a guest speaker.

They also have a 'Ladies Lunch' in December and a 'Ladies Evening' in April, when members are accompanied by their wife or partner.

Donald added: “The club has an active walking group which meets every month for a four mile ramble.

“The walk is usually based on a pub and is followed by lunch. Ladies, guests and family members (including dogs) are always welcome.

“We also arrange group visits to places and organisations of general interest to members and their families.”

STAFFORDSHIRE COUNTY SHOW

Lots to do and see at county show

T

he organisers of the Staffordshire County Show are hoping for the event’s biggest turn out yet this year.

The half term show, which will take place this year on May 29 and May 30 is set to see some of the country’s most spectacular attractions descend on the Showground in Weston Road, Stafford.

Richard Williams, Chief Executive of the Staffordshire and Birmingham Agricultural Society, said that a lot has been going on behind the scenes to ensure that the 2019 show is another “roaring success.”

He said: “We have had many enquiries from people across the country who want to come along and see what we have on offer.

“Last year we had a spike in advance ticket sales as it seemed people wanted to get prepared for half term, take advantage of the discounted rate and also avoid any queuing when they arrive.

“Advanced ticket sales were up 200 per cent on the year before and with the number of enquiries we’ve had this year already we expect people are looking to get prepared once again.

“Tickets at outlets across the county and beyond will go on sale from May 1, but visitors can also buy them on the gate without the discounted rate.

“We have got another great event lined up for everyone, all the family will have something to enjoy.”

The Bolddog Lings, who wowed audiences in 2017, will

return to headline the event again and are set to keep crowds in the main ring entertained with fast-action motocross stunts. Featuring alongside them will be the Scurry Drivers with their fastpaced equestrian action.

The ever-popular Country Pursuits area will have the same line-up as last year with all manner of animals and activities to keep visitors entertained. The quack pack and sheep show always prove a hit and they will be making a welcome return.

There will also be all the usual trade stands, craft and antiques fairs as well as a cookery theatre.

Their chance is here, with the Agria Dog Walk! On Saturday 25th May, the Agria Dog Walk will take place simultaneously in locations across Europe, with dogs (and their humans) coming together to raise money for the rescue venue that’s local to them.

Along with walks in Stockholm, Oslo, Helsinki, Copenhagen, Hermes and Edinburgh, thanks to Cocker and English Springer Spaniel Rescue (CAESSR), there’s a walk right here at The Wammy, Newcastle under Lyme!

Resident bags lottery £30k Postcode lottery finds lucky Newcastle neighbourhood

A

lucky resident in Newcastle-UnderLyme had a fantastic end to her weekend recently, after her postcode, ST5 0RE, was announced as a £30,000 winner with People’s Postcode Lottery.

67 year old Anne Hopewell and her husband Raymond were gobsmacked when they found out how much she had won.

Anne commented: "It’s amazing! It’s much more than we were expecting so it’s a huge surprise. We’re the only ones on our street who play, but we’ve already had one neighbour from across the road congratulate us – I bet they’ll sign up to play now!”

Anne and Raymond are both retired, but with six children and 13 grandchildren between them they’ve been kept busy over the years. Anne added: “It will be lovely to relax and treat ourselves with our winnings. We spent a day in Antigua on a cruise some time ago and have always wanted to go back. Savana is one of many charities close to the winners that has also received support from players, and last year it was awarded £10,808 to provide emotional and practical support to young people who have been affected by sexual violence or exploitation.

Lotto funding boosts town projects A share of £7.2 million goes to the Newcastle under Lyme community

C

ommunity organisations across Stoke and Staffordshire are celebrating after being awarded over £7.2 million in National Lottery funding - including several groups in Newcastle under Lyme.

The money, raised by players for good causes, is being distributed by The National Lottery Community Fund, the largest funder of community activity in the UK. In total, 309 community projects across the region are receiving a share.

Matt Poole, Senior Head of Regional Funding for the Midlands at The National Lottery Community Fund, said: “National Lottery money continues to change the lives of thousands of people across the West Midlands. From community-led projects that reduce loneliness and isolation to those looking at ways of tackling bullying amongst young people, this quarter’s funding has one thing in common – it’s all been awarded to groups with the ideas, knowledge and passion to make the changes they want to see in their local area.”

The National Lottery Community Fund is responsible for giving out money raised by National Lottery players for good causes. As part of today’s announcement, it has revealed that it is making grants totalling £64 million going to more than 2,200 community organisations across England. To find out more visit www.TNLCommunityFund.org.uk Projects in Newcastle include: The North Staffordshire Polish Day Care Centre £42,000 This group will use the funding to continue providing weekly opportunities for around 50 older people from Polish and Eastern European communities. This brings them together at Holy Trinity Church to socialise, build friendships and

increase health, wellbeing and independence. The activities, including gentle exercises and a freshly cooked lunch, will also provide carers and relatives with respite and support.

The Lyme Trust £12,000 Project Lyme Links This charity provides supported accommodation for 78 homeless people with multiple and complex needs, who wish to resettle in the community. So that the charity can bring these people together, the funding will be used to lease a vehicle, enabling relationships, improving aspirations and reducing loneliness. This will also support holding activities off site such as sports, arts and crafts and day trips.

The Lyme Trust £8,046 Project Outreach 2 This funding will be used to provide information on supported accommodation for homeless people. The project aims to reduce homelessness, encourage rehabilitation and improve mental health.

Wood Lane Primary School £10,000 Fun and Fitness at Wood Lane This funding will be used to install a play area to provide local children with access to activities which benefit their fitness and wellbeing.

Ellison Primary Academy £9,989 Project Activate Minds and Bodies This school will use the funding for the purchase and installation of playground equipment. The project aims to encourage children to be more physically active.

fantastic line up of live bands will descend on Newcastle once again this May bank holiday weekend - as the 2019 Jazz and Blues Festival once again kicks off in style.

Between May 24th and 27th, you will be able to experience a whole host of talented acts at venues all across the town.

Venues this year include Bar Social, Cappello Lounge, The Museum, Revolution, Yates’, The Rigger, Lymestone Vaults, and The Foyer.

Gearing up for golf Yearly fundraiser set for 2019 return

W

olstanton Rotary Club are set to host their 2019 Annual Golf Day this September.

As the club's longest running project, the annual golf day has raised many thousands of pounds which has been distributed amongst good causes locally as well as national and international charities.

The most recent event in September 2018 raised over £1100 which meant the club were able to donate £800 to The Dougie Mac Hospice.

The club also donated £300 to Shropshire, Staffordshire and Cheshire Blood Bikes, who carry out a vital service in supporting the NHS. The exact date of this year’s event will be announced shortly.

Heroic efforts from volunteers

A

Community First Responder from Keele has been honoured at a special awards ceremony for members of the public who have gone above and beyond.

Richard Lawton, of Keele Community First Responders, was crowned Community First Responder Volunteer of the Year at the event, which celebrates members of the public across the West Midlands who have gone beyond the call of duty to help save lives and support the work of West Midlands Ambulance Service’s 5,000 staff.

By its very nature, being a community first responder demonstrates a willingness to give, and demonstrates someone who has the time, dedication and desire to put others before themselves.

But Richard has gone one step further and taken on several additional roles. He is also the secretary for the Association of Staffordshire Coordinators – a group which supports 32 group co-ordinators across the county, he supports the CFR Community as a member of the CFR regional forum and he tirelessly supports community resuscitation within the Keele and North Staffordshire area and has been part of an ongoing project to install additional defibs at Keele University.

The event, sponsored by Staffordshire University, J. Tomlinson, Zoll Medical, Coventry University, Cardiac Science and Defib Shop took place at the Copthorne Hotel in Brierley Hill.

It recognised the efforts of Community First Responders, St John Ambulance, other emergency services and other voluntary

organisations, businesses and individuals.

Addressing the audience, West Midlands Ambulance Service Chief Executive Anthony Marsh said: “We are incredibly proud of the high level of performance we achieve as an ambulance service, of the fact we are the only ambulance service to be rated ‘outstanding’ and of the high level of patient care we achieve day in, day out.

“That would not be possible without the help of our volunteers who do an incredible job in supporting us.

“I know how hard you all work, the amount of your time you give up – all to ensure patients receive help as soon as possible, and for that I am extremely grateful.

“This awards ceremony is a chance to say thank you and recognise those who have gone above and beyond what is expected with some truly heroic and brave acts for which you deserve great recognition. Well done to all of our award winners and everyone who has volunteered to support West Midlands Ambulance Service during the last 12 months.”

High Sheriff of Worcestershire, Cassian Roberts, who helped to present some of the awards on the evening, said: “It is always inspiring to be with people who serve and it sometimes surprises me that the majority of people who inhabit this world, do not realise exactly what you do.

“You are the glue which makes this country great. You don’t do it for the money, you do it because it is the right thing to do and would like to congratulate all of you and say thank you.”

n Sunday 28th April 2019, Newcastle District Scouts held their St. George’s Day Parade. This was held outside for the first time ever in the High Street by the Guildhall. This event was organised by the District Youth Executive, and at their request and design, was a mixture of tradition, with some interesting new twists!

The District’s Beavers carried banners about St. George, the Cubs carried swords they had made

themselves and the Scouts made dragons for the parade!

Well over 400 Scouts, aged from 5 to 75, gathered in the Queens Gardens and paraded at 2.45pm, led by the Drums Corps from 1st Porthill Scout Group, via the Ironmarket, into the High Street, where the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Staffordshire, Mr James Irvine Hinchcliffe-Friend, and Newcastle Mayor Cllr Gill Heesom, took the salute. There was then a celebration of songs and

Hardy sages for the flower garden

M

ost people’s introductions to the wonderful world of salvias is either courtesy of sage, the well-loved herb grown from time immemorial for its culinary and medicinal value or perhaps the bright red bedding plant Salvia splendens traditionally planed with blue lobelia and white alyssum for a truly patriotic display. However, hardy, perennial salvias are becoming increasingly popular as great garden plants for people and bees. These are not edible but make a wonderful, long-lasting display in the garden.

There is a vast array of perennial salvias to choose from including many tender types, but this month I’m focusing on the hardy, perennial European types that are great for most gardens.

Of the European species, the best for general garden use are the wood sages and these are varieties of Salvia nemorosa, sylvestris and superba. They grow in dry or moist soils and can be grown in light shade or a sunny spot. They grow well in alkaline (chalky), neutral or mildly acid soils. Add lime annually if planting in extremely acid soils.

They have rough leaves and short spikes of flowers from June through July. If you cut them back hard after flowering, they will normally oblige with more flowers in late August into September. The planting distance for these is about 12-18in apart.

They come in many shades of blue, pink, violet and white and vary in height from 1ft through to 3ft 6in.

Snow Hill and Blue Hill (properly called by their German names Schneehügel and Blauhügel) are the shortest ones I grow and are snow-white

and sky-blue respectively. Among my favourites are the slightly taller May Night (indigo blue) and East Friesland (blue) and the lovely Rose Queen (pink).

The newer variety Caradonna grows to about 2ft tall and has lovely blue flowers and black stems in summer adding to their drama.

One of the tallest is the aptly named Amethyst which grows to 3ft or slightly more. This one has a very long flowering period from June to September or even October without the need to be cut back at all.

Of course, there are also many ornamental varieties of the herb sage for growing in a freedraining, sunny spot and you can find types with purple, golden and variegated leaves.

ROBOT SAVVY STUDENTS SECURE ONCE IN A LIFETIME TRIP

Newcastle team of students were crowned UK winners of a tech competition that saw them take a once in a lifetime trip to the USA to compete on behalf of their country.

Almost 600 students from across the North West gathered at the Concorde Conference Centre in Manchester in March to compete in the inaugural FIRST® Tech Challenge UK Championships.

Team Newbotics 101 from Newcastle Academy School were named FIRST® Tech Challenge UK Inspire Award winners and, with the support of JCB, represented the UK at the FIRST® Championships held in Detroit, USA between 24 27th April.

Unfortunately the team didn’t win the Detroit competition, but they did have a fantastic time.

The team joined 30,000 students competing head-to-head to be crowned global champions at the world’s largest student robotics competition.

FIRST® Tech Challenge is an expeditionary robotics programme for ages 12-18, seeking to build relationships between today's professionals and tomorrow's talent.

Working in teams of up to 15, and supported by an industry mentor, young people design, build and programme a robot to compete in the annual championships. Team members assume individual and collaborative roles reflective of real-life careers – from software engineers and designers, to project managers and communications officers – all play a part in becoming competition-ready.

During the championship event in Manchester, teams competed against each other within alliances, using their robots to complete a series of

tasks on a space-themed playing field.

Teams were also required to present engineering notebooks, documenting their journey through the programme, to a panel of industry judges.

Other local colleges and schools were awarded accolades celebrating a diverse range of technical and soft skills. These included; Rob-bot from Clayton Academy - Motivate Award – Sparking others to embrace the culture of FIRST®; and Trentham Terrors from Trentham Academy Design Award – Industrial design at its best.

Amber, team leader from Newbotics 101, Newcastle Academy commented: “We are all in complete and utter shock, we were ready to leave and then heard our names called as winners for the Inspire Award. It is so exciting to be heading to Detroit, we really can’t wait. We loved every second of working in a team, we all helped equally and we couldn’t have done it without all of us together.”

FIRST® Tech Challenge is backed by leading industries keen to address the burgeoning STEM skills crisis. Mentors have been supporting the teams throughout the programme – helping to ease the load for educators whilst forging important relationships between schools and industry.

The Department for Education has funded an Essential Life Skills* programme supporting schools within the Stoke-on-Trent Opportunity Area to take part in the FIRST® Tech Challenge.

Co-chair of the Opportunity Area Partnership Board, and Vice-Chancellor of Staffordshire University, Liz Barnes commented: “One of our key objectives in the Opportunity Area is driving social mobility in Stoke-On-Trent. Projects like FIRST® Tech Challenge - inspiring the next generation of science and technology students - are helping us achieve this goal.”

TICKLE YOUR TAPAS T DISHES BIG ONTASTE Summer prawns with garlic butter This simple recipe for prawns in a garlicky sauce makes a delicious addition to a tapas spread just add lots of crusty bread.

Preparation time: less than 30 mins Cooking time: less than 10 mins Serves: 2-3

Ingredients: 1 tbsp olive oil 50g/2oz butter 12 large raw prawns 2 garlic cloves, crushed salt and freshly ground black pepper small handful parsley, chopped Method: In a wok or a large pan heat the oil and butter.

Add the prawns and garlic and stir well Stir fry until the prawns are pink (about 4-5 minutes).

Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and scatter the chopped parsley over.

Serve at once.

TASTEBUDS - SMALL E It's getting warmer and that can only mean one thing - outside dining!

Tapas is the perfect way to enjoy a summer's evening; sit back, relax and enjoy a leisurely few hours sampling little bite sized dishes bursting with flavours.

Piedmontese peppers This is a great recipe for summer tapas, and it's low calorie too. Lots of beautiful Mediterranean flavours in this dish - enjoy!

Preparation time: 0 mins to 1 hour Cooking time: 30 mins to 1 hour Serves: 4 Ingredients: 8-12 ripe plum tomatoes 4 red peppers, stalks left on (for decoration), cut lengthways in half, seeds removed 4 garlic cloves, sliced 5-6 tbsp extra virgin olive oil salt and freshly ground black pepper 8 large canned anchovies, cut in half lengthways small handful fresh basil

Method: Preheat the oven to 190C/375F/Gas 5.

Pour boiling water over the plum tomatoes, leave for 10 seconds, carefully remove from the water and refresh in a bowl of cold water. Peel off the tomato skins.

Place the halved peppers into an ovenproof dish (preferably one that will be nice enough to present later), cut-side up.

Place the garlic inside the peppers and then fit the tomatoes inside too, pushing them gently into the space. Add a small pinch of salt and a grinding of freshly ground black pepper. Spoon over the olive oil and then place into the oven.

Bake for about 45 minutes to one hour, turning the heat down a little if you notice any excessive scorching of the peppers.

Once they are nicely softened and have slightly collapsed, remove the peppers from the oven.

Criss-cross each pepper half with an anchovy, baste with the oily juices and allow to cool to room temperature.Top with basil leaves and serve.
