t’s always the same - everywhere you go in November and December there are cries of ‘I can’t believe it’s nearly Christmas’ and ‘the year has gone so quickly!’ But it’s so true - 2018 has flown by quicker than Santa on his sleigh.

It’s been a fantastic one here in Newcastle, we’ve enjoyed charity events such as the Mayor’s Masquerade Ball, Pants2Cancer and Lions fundraisers, as well as plenty of Circus themed activities, events, openings and workshops throughout the year thanks to the Philip Astley project.

The local Scouts wowed us with their 2018 Castle Capers gang show and crowds of people attended a whole host of local festivals - Music Speech and Drama, Lymelight, Jazz and Blues, Beer and Gin, AstleyFest, and FoodFest.

Art Exhibitions, Plant Fairs, singing clubs, flower arranging, history sessions, creative workshops, farmers markets, bake offs, fireworks and sporting events have all kept us busy.

So you could be forgiven for thinking that after all the excitement of these extraordinary events, winter will be a quiet one, but you’d be wrong.

In this issue we celebrate the amazing achievements of our town in the In Bloom competition, we find out what the Lions are up to for Christmas and we talk to St Andrew’s Church in Porthill as they commemorate Remembrance Sunday with beautiful poppy displays, a revamped WWI memorial and successful open days.

Recently I had the pleasure of attending the national Nursing Times Awards in London, in which several teams from local University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust and Midlands Partnership Foundation Trust were shortlisted for national awards. A truly inspirational and emotional evening, it was incredible to see the dedication, passion, empathy and knowledge of our local nurses and for the fantastic care they provide us all, so I want to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to each of you.

We also discover more about Newcastle Parkrun, there’s a new headteacher over at Edenhurst and we learn about how Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Services are making important links with the Newcastle community.

So, between the Christmas lights switch on, reindeer appearances, Santa tours and the Christmas Tree Festival, there’s plenty to keep you entertained as the festive season comes closer.

I think it’s time to get cosy by the fire, close the curtains to the cold and snuggle up to enjoy your winter issue of Newcastle Life magazine.

Lions countdown to Christmas COUNTDOWN TO CHRISTMAS

ewcastle Lions Club have finalised their plans for Christmas events, with the help of many local stores and groups, in the hope that plenty of local people will show their support this festive season.

Lions Spokesman David Slack spoke to Newcastle Life magazine about the festive events the group have planned.

He explained: “Last year our Christmas activities helped us to distribute over £3000 to local groups in January, and we are hoping that with the continuing generosity of the people in the Borough we are able to continue with that support. We have also helped 3 local stores with their charitable work during 2018.”

The Lions illuminated “Santa Sleigh” will start work on November 17th at the Christmas lights switch on in Newcastle Town Centre. Santa will be meeting children from 2 until 3.30pm, and then, after leaving to feed his reindeer he will return from 4.30pm until the fireworks display.

The Santa Sleigh will also be inside Northwood Garden Centre during the time they have their reindeers, (Reindeer are there from November 22nd to December 21st) with all money collected being administered by the Lions, and donated to the Donna Louise Trust. This will be the 7th year that the collection has been donated to Donna Louise, with over £9300 collected during the previous years.

From November 30th until December 2nd the sleigh will be at Sainsbury’s in Newcastle with the Lions collecting with the help of a gentleman in a red suit also present at various times of each day On the evening of Tuesday 4th December, Lions Club members, accompanied by members of 435 Squadron, Air Training Corps (ATC) Newcastle, will again be going around the Westlands with Santa Claus and their illuminated Christmas Sleigh, to raise much needed funds for the ATC, to further the great work that they do with their young people and to aid Lions Local Charities. The tour starts at 6pm at St. Andrew’s Church.

The Lions and the ATC repeat a walk around the houses on December 11th from 6pm, when they collect around Westbury Park.

On Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th December the Lions will be at Morrisons, Milehouse, and on the following Saturday, December 15th they will be at Morrisons Goose Street, Newcastle.

The Lions and their sleigh will complete their Christmas work on Saturday December 22nd and Sunday December 23rd when they will be at Tesco, Trent Vale.

Newcastle Lions Club is a group of men and women who identify needs within the community and work together to fulfil those needs.

Membership of the Lions is open to anyone over the age of 18 wishing to participate in community and social events.

Newcastle celebrates trio o R NEWCASTLE IN BLOOM

epresenting the Heart of England region, Newcastle-under-Lyme has brought home a trio of awards in a prestigious category of the national Britain in Bloom competition.

The town was one of six areas across the country hand-picked to compete in the Champion of Champions, a special category of the national competition, following a sustained period of high achievement.

It’s the first time the borough has taken part in the illustrious Champion of Champions category after 28 years of involvement in the campaign.

Its show-stopping year-round campaign was marked with a gold award.

The other competitors were Didsbury in Manchester, Market Bosworth, Leicestershire; Truro, Sidmouth and the Welsh town of Usk. The borough’s entry featured circus-themed activities and performances in honour of Philip Astley, a steel hare sculpture, a community wildflower patchwork meadow made out of recycling boxes, attractive floral displays and innovative projects delivered by a variety of community groups.

Newcastle and Ballymena were announced the joint winners of the discretionary “wild about gardens” accolade for promoting wildlife-friendly gardening practices.

The Council led on improving wildlife habitats as part of the Royal Horticultural Society’s “Greening Grey Britain for Wildlife” theme. Beefriendly planting, eco-forums, bat box workshops and the creation of wildlife and butterfly gardens are just some of the activities that have taken place.

Amanda Stevenson, court manager at the Lisbon Place retirement complex at the Westlands, picked up a special community champion award for going above and beyond to make a community gardening project a success.

Amanda has been the driving force behind residents’ participation in Britain in Bloom over the past two years which has not only helped to transform the environment, but also their quality of life through social activities and community involvement.

Truro was declared the Champion of Champions.

Cllr. Mark Holland, Cabinet member for leisure and culture, said: “Reaching the Champion of Champions – the pinnacle of Britain in Bloom – after almost 30 years of involvement is such a 10 Newcastle Life Issue 17

proud and unforgettable achievement. It doesn’t get any better or higher than this.

“The borough has enjoyed phenomenal success in the competition recently, from gaining the national small city title last year to winning everything possible in Heart of England in Bloom for the third year last month. Winning three awards tonight is amazing.

“I would like to thank our many greenfingered residents and sponsors because if it wasn’t for the time and effort they invest in bloom activities, we simply wouldn’t have reached this stage. They certainly pulled out all the stops to create an impressive campaign.”

In the spotlight Britain in Bloom judges were very impressed when they visited Newcastle. Here are just a few highlights of their tour of the town:

1) Giggles & Wiggles Nursery Giggles & Wiggles Nursery children told the judges all about their outdoor classroom and how they have learned all about the world around them in a practical way through planting sessions, pond dipping, trips to the sensory garden and other green-fingered activities at Brampton Park.

Particular highlights of this year include releasing butterflies they had nurtured from caterpillars, taking part in a butterfly hunt, enjoying rides on the miniature railway in return for helping to plant perennials, making hedgehog boxes and learning about the importance of bees.

One of the main focuses has been the development of a bee-friendly wildlife garden by the bird aviary.

2) Community Food Garden Adults with learning difficulties, disabilities, mental health struggles and long-term unemployment issues are benefiting from growing fruit, vegetables and herbs at Newcastle’s community food garden.

Members of the new community café’s “gardening gang” are growing in confidence since taking part in weekly sessions at the Queen Elizabeth Park and met the judges to tell them all about the initiative.

Narina Stead, the founder of Cultural Squatters, adopted the overgrown site in May as part of her varied activities programme.

Volunteers have worked hard to organise the site and have harvested a successful crop including potatoes, parsnips, rainbow carrots, tomatoes, peas, cabbage, beetroot, courgettes, apples, raspberries, strawberries, garlic, parsley, sage, thyme and bay leaves. They also create their own compost and floral displays.

As well as the public being able to pick the produce, many of the items have found their way on to the café’s menu, with vegan ratatouille and lobby being particular favourites.

3) Lyme Valley Allotment Society Green-fingered allotment holders in Lyme Valley enjoy a peaceful site situated in a corner of the popular park. It has 49 plots and its popularity mean there are just four vacancies. Judges toured the community area, orchard, plots, wildlife habitats and a bee-keeping area.

Plot holders share everything and help each other out, also giving advice about the bees and wildlife to pupils from Edenhurst Preparatory

School who tend a plot there.

They also organise fund-raising events to buy communal items such as lawnmowers and strimmers. The next item on the wish list is a composting toilet.

A tree swing, clown and bunting provided a subtle nod to the Philip Astley theme.

Squashes, courgettes, peas, beans, artichokes, cabbage, kale – and of course honey – are just some of the delicious items produced there.

Members have also grown wildflower boxes for the Council’s mini meadow on the A34 in Chesterton.

4) Knutton Peace Garden The star attraction at St. Mary’s Church, Knutton, the Peace Garden was enjoyed by the national judges during their tour in July.

Once a “dumping ground” containing mountains of rubbish, tree cuttings, bricks, tyres and even sinks, it’s now a tranquil haven enjoyed by all sections of the community thanks to the hard work of the church’s

working party.

The area includes stepping stones, trees, shrubs, seating, a butterfly and bee garden, a hosta and hellebore corner and perennials and annuals such as geraniums, hydrangeas, astrantias, astilbes, penstemon, clematis, crocosmia, aster and begonias. A marigold bed was created using an existing bedhead.

The judges enjoyed a walk through the garden before being shown a floral tribute marking the 100th anniversary of women being able to vote which incorporated part of the old church door.

They saw a big top display – created with help from the local brownies group – and a ringmaster in honour of the Philip Astley theme.

5)Lisbon Place, Westlands Britain Bloom has helped to create a thriving social scene at Lisbon Place in just two years.

Gardening is just one of the optional activities in a daily programme that includes art and craft classes, scrabble afternoons, coffee mornings, quizzes, pamper sessions, bridge clubs, intergenerational events and other opportunities thanks to excellent community links that have been forged since entering the annual campaign last year.

scouts, medical students, young offenders, Prince’s Trust volunteers and the Council to improve their surroundings. Once tired and overgrown, they are now bright and welcoming – a brilliant example of the Royal Horticultural Society’s “Greening Grey Britain” theme.

There was a real buzz of excitement in the air when they welcomed the national judges and hosted a comfort break for them.

Residents showed off their well-maintained gardens including a pleasant patio area, fruit and vegetable garden, handmade flower boxes, bird boxes, bug hotels and beautiful hanging baskets.

A swing and wishing well, made by an elderly neighbour, and clown artwork created by children helped to celebrate the Philip Astley theme.

The court’s entry won a gold medal last year which contributed to the borough winning the regional and national small city titles.

ewcastle based support group Back2Back has had a lot to celebrate recently. Not only has it hosted a successful Bake Off event, raising over £300 for local children with scoliosis, but the group’s Nurse Practitioner was shortlisted for a prestigious national Nursing Times Award and one of the co-founders has appeared on national TV to talk about the condition.

Local support for scoliosis, a condition in which the spine twists and curves, has increased dramatically over the past few years thanks to Back2Back, a group set up especially for patients at the Royal Stoke University Hospital.

Stephanie came into post in 2015 and has since transformed the way that young people with scoliosis are treated at the hospital. Her work to change the clinical pathway and her efforts with Laura to create the support group and write good quality patient information has now been recognised by judges from the Nursing Times, a national magazine which provides clinical resources, career development and news for the nursing profession across the country.

Out of hundreds of entries from across the UK, Stephanie, from Penkhull, was shortlisted in the Child and Adolescent Services category, for Transforming Children’s Spinal Surgery.

Laura and Stephanie travelled to London to present in front of a panel of five well respected, successful senior nurses and managers before attending a glitzy awards ceremony in Mayfair, London, presented by TV star Gethin Jones.

Unfortunately they didn’t win the category but they enjoyed an inspiring evening celebrating the fantastic work of dedicated nurses in the NHS. Meanwhile, awareness of the condition rocketed after Princess Eugenie’s wedding in October, when she appeared in a specially designed bridal gown with a low back, which

its way to success showed off the scar down her spine left by corrective surgery when she was just 12.

Laura, who has also had the surgery, appeared live on BBC Breakfast with Louise Minchin and Jon Kay, to talk about what she thought about Eugenie proudly showing her scar, as well as her own experiences of scoliosis and her work with the Scoliosis Association UK (SAUK) and Back2Back.

Laura said: “I was incredibly nervous right up until I sat down on the sofa at the studios, but the presenters were so lovely and when the interview started the adrenaline kicked in which got me through it.

“It was so surreal, like I’d stepped into the TV. There were all these cameras and lights and I just kept thinking of all my family and friends who I knew were watching at home.”

Laura was diagnosed with scoliosis when she was just 13. She underwent spinal bracing and five operations to correct the 72º curve and twist in her spine. She has broken her back twice and half of her spine is now fused with titanium rods and screws.

The first operation lasted 10 hours and involved surgeons removing a rib and deflating a lung to gain access to her spine. She spent time recovering in the High Dependency Unit following that operation and then had to face

surgery four more times over the next few years.

Laura continued: “Like Princess Eugenie, I am really proud of my scars, they are part of what's made me the person I am today. Even though I’ve been left with long term pain and discomfort, working with other patients has given me a way to turn my more difficult experiences into something positive.

“I've met some incredibly brave and inspiring people along the way and my experiences with scoliosis have made me stronger. I’m also really lucky to have amazing family and friends who support me, and a wonderful team of NHS professionals who have got me through some absolutely awful treatments.

“And – unbelievably – all of that has now propelled me to a television studio to talk about a royal wedding and tell my own story to more than a million people!”

The Back2Back Bake Off took place at Penkhull Village Hall. Visitors enjoyed a huge variety of cakes, some donated from companies Spode and Sodexo, music from a live ukulele band and a competition to crown the best Great British Baker in Penkhull! The winner of the Bake Off was announced by Councillor Randy Conteh.

Money raised at the event will go towards providing local children and adolescents with scoliosis with support during bracing and surgery.

Local GPs back Parkrun A NEWCASTLE PARKRUN

rural Staffordshire GP practice has become the first in the area to register with the Parkrun initiative.

Parkrun is a network of weekly timed runs taking place across the country at 9am every Saturday morning. The events are free of charge as long as participants register online.

The Newcastle course is 5000m (5K) long, starting and finishing by the children’s play area on The Wammy, Lowe Milehouse Lane, Newcastle Under Lyme. The course is an out and back route on a tarmac path along the Silverdale track. It is run entirely on tarmac paths and dependent on availability, marshals will be at key sections of the course, or signs will be in place.

Ashley Surgery near Newcastle has a long record of encouraging patients to exercise.

Practice Manager Denise Smith said: “As a practice we encourage our patients to improve their health and fitness. In 2016 we launched our Health Walk initiative which has 76 registered patients and undertakes organised walks twice per month.

“Parkrun is being actively promoted by the Royal College of General Practitioners to combat inactivity and we thought it was a natural progression. The feedback has been encouraging as we are the first GP surgery in this area to register and we would like to encourage other surgeries to do so.”

Laura Verrill, a dispenser at the practice, has been the first to participate and will administer the practice’s involvement. She said: “I started running to improve my all-round fitness, but also for stress release, to make new friends and meet new people. It’s a good way to socialise and is also family friendly with buggies and dogs allowed to participate.”

Parkrun are now hoping other GP practices will join them.

Event Director Gareth Copley-Jones said: “We hope to improve health and wellbeing through running, jogging, walking or volunteering.

“Ashley is first GP surgery to be partnered with The Wammy parkrun in Newcastle. We hope to encourage as many local GP surgeries to partner with their local parkrun.

“Whether people want to improve their fitness, make new friends, cope with health problems, learn new skills or simply be outside with others, parkrun has a positive impact on health and wellbeing.”

The Wammy has a small car park which fills up quite quickly. Alternatively, the start is approximately 20 minutes walk from Newcastle under Lyme town centre and best reached via Silverdale track; entrances can be found on New Ashfields Road and Brampton Sidings. The track can also be accessed by entrances in neighbouring boroughs of Knutton and Silverdale. Every week runners can grab a post parkrun coffee at Ken's Café hosted at Newcastle AC clubhouse, which is five minutes walk from the finish.

Heritage funding supp COMMEMORATING WW1

Porthill community marks the 1918 Armistice

T

he Porthill WW1 War Memorial has received a £9,900 funding boost from the National Lottery, enabling The Friends of St Andrew’s Church to conserve the monument for the future.

The memorial, which has stood prominently outside the east window St Andrew’s since 1953, provides a focal point for the community, particularly on Remembrance Sunday. 146 names of local men who gave their lives in The Great War are recorded on 16 stone tablets.

Before 1953 it stood at the old crossroads at the top of Porthill Bank and was moved due to the widening of the road.

The funding has enabled the memorial to be thoroughly cleaned and repointed and bird netting has been installed on the church window, to prevent the nesting of birds above.

The 16 stone tablets have been relocated from the ground to the east wall of the church, which will enable the names to be more easily read, as well as removing any chance of them being damaged by people walking on them.

In addition to the work to the memorial, the church is hosting a series of exhibitions centred around WW1. The first of these open days was held in October and attracted crowds of people from the local community, but don’t worry if you missed it another is taking place on Saturday 10th November, from 10am - 4pm.

The church is full of WW1 memorabilia from local residents and the Brampton Museum, and there are displays from local schools and from the Lichfield Cathedral “Consequences of War” exhibition.

Moving war poetry will be read, there will be appearances from the 1st Porthill Drum Corps, and there’s a stunning cascade of poppies inside the church.

include a performance of “Letters From War” by Professional Repertory Theatre Group ‘Act It Out CIC’ at 1pm, and the War Memorial will be rededicated by Geoff Annas, Bishop of Stafford, at 11am.

Chair of The Friends of St Andrew’s, Steve Brown, said: “We are very grateful to the Heritage Lottery Fund for their generous support which has enabled this conservation work to go ahead. We are also thankful for the contractors involved in the work, who have put great care and professionalism into ensuring the War Memorial's conservation has been achieved to the highest standard.”

Fr Chris Routledge, Vicar of St Andrew’s Church, said: “The fact that Remembrance Sunday is the best-attended service of the year at our church is indicative of how important this day is to the people of Porthill. The conservation of the War Memorial and the Open Days will help to ensure that our collective memory of those who gave their lives will be sustained for generations yet to come.”

INNOVATIVE SCHEME SECURES CANCER SERVICES

T

he University Hospital of North Midlands NHS Trust is helping to secure the future of radiotherapy services in Stoke on Trent, by nurturing home grown engineering talent.

The hospital launched an innovative and bespoke radiotherapy engineering degree apprenticeship scheme recently and has now been given the award of 'Best Large Apprentice Employer 2018' by Newcastle-under-Lyme College, who partnered the programme.

Students embark on a five-year journey to achieve a degree and are mentored by engineering staff at UHNM as they train in the maintenance and calibration of essential radiotherapy equipment.

Craig Edwards, Radiotherapy Engineer, said: "The apprentice program was developed because we found attracting appropriately qualified engineers exceptionally difficult. This led Nick Wright, our Medical Technical Officer, to contact Newcastle-under-Lyme College and develop an apprentice engineer programme to help alleviate the growing problem. “Before recruiting an apprentice, Nick presented the role to students at the college and arranged open evenings for students, college lecturers and parents. He also organised work experience placements for students before a formal interview so that only high-quality applications from engaged candidates who were excited by the programme were recruited.

As a result of Nick's diligence, our current apprentice is dedicated to the profession and has become an outstanding member of the team. The process developed by Nick has proven to be so comprehensive and successful that we have even chosen to expand it, by employing a further two

apprentices. Moreover, Nick's selection process is being used as a blueprint by the college for new apprentice employers."

Nick has been given the Employee of the Month award in recognition of his outstanding contribution.

Nick said: "I am pleased that my work has been recognised in this way, but the really important thing is that this programme has helped to put UHNM on the map. The NHS is not just about doctors and nurses, it relies on having many other types of skilled staff to keep it ticking over. “We knew there was a real need to grow and train talent in our own area because it can be very difficult to recruit people further down the line.

The role of Radiotherapy Engineer is a highly skilled one and we now have three apprentices and four senior engineers on our team. This is a fantastic result and will help to ensure the people of Staffordshire and surrounding areas are properly looked after by well-trained staff in the future. "

ore than 70 events have been held across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent as part of Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service’s Community Wellbeing Week.

Aimed at raising awareness of the importance of supporting people in vulnerable circumstances, this year’s theme has been ‘Brew with a crew’ with sessions being held at various fire stations, including Newcastle under Lyme.

The week highlights the great community work carried out by our local firefighters throughout the year.

Firefighter Emma Jones of Newcastle White Watch and Firefighter Jake Humphreys of Newcastle Orange Watch are helping out with a weekly art class for people with disabilities, which is held at Newcastle Fire Station.

Meanwhile Dean Hulstone is collecting tomatoes from the community garden at the station. The garden was designed by horticulture students at Newcastle College.

As well as the ‘Brews’ staff took part in walking the Wellbeing Mile on Cannock Chase with local residents, white watch from Longton station got

“Firefighters and support staff have all been encouraged to get involved in some of the events this week and we hope our activities will prompt people to spare a thought for family, friends and neighbours who may need us to support during the year.

“Our statistics show there are four factors which consistently play a part in fatal fires: smoking, alcohol, problems with mobility and

being elderly (SAME). If you know someone who may be in vulnerable circumstances, it’s important to bear this in mind. Asters: Stars of the Autumn Garden I

f one flower embodies the joy of the autumn garden then it must be the Aster, or Michaelmas Daisy to give it its common name.

These brilliant bloomers come in a vast array of heights from low mounds for the front of the border to stately, towering giants for the back and in colours including violet, blue, crimson, pink and white. To cap it all there are even asters that bloom in spring!

The biggest range of colours and heights comes from the New York asters including low growing ones like the Red Robin, through to 5ft giants. These are the most prone to mildew and good growing conditions are essential. This includes: compost-rich, moist soil and a good dose of fertiliser in the spring. The clumps should be divided regularly in spring and the small sections should be planted around 9-12in / 2230cm apart to ensure good air circulation. Cut the stems down after flowering and clear away dead leaves and mulch in late winter.

The Heather-leaved Aster (Aster ericoides) has tiny leaves like a heather but grows into a 3ft / 90cm tall bushy plant and is covered with masses of tiny flowers in autumn. This one also needs good growing conditions.

The New England asters like the tall pink Connie and the equally tall purple Helen Picton are generally free of problems and tolerate drier soils.

Earlier to flower and always healthy in our garden is the 2ft 6in / 75cm, Monch with his large purple flowers from late July into October.

Asters aren’t just good for us to enjoy, they also provide a wonderful nectar source for butterflies like the Comma, Peacock, Red Admiral and Small Tortoiseshell that continue to feed well into October. To see a tall plant of Aster Daybreak (“Octendgloren” to give her the proper

Dutch name) covered with butterflies on a sunny October day is such a thrilling sight.

Asters look great planted with autumn flowering grasses or low growing Ice Plants (Sedums) or even planted on mass for a dazzling display of colour.

Oh, and that spring-flowering one? It’s the Alpine Aster and you can grow this little plant from seed – look out for Aster alpinus.

Community turns to apps and chat for support n app which helps people access council services has grown in popularity this summer, whilst a new healthcare text messaging service for young people has officially been launched this autumn.

Play and the App Store, reached over 1,000 weekly users and has seen an increase in downloads over the holidays.

The app was created by a partnership of County, District and Borough councils, and bosses say it has been particularly popular with parents while their children

have been off school over the six-week holidays.

Nancy Emery, a 36-year-old mother of two from Trentham, said: “I have used the myStaffs app over the summer to help find local events and leisure centres to keep the kids entertained. Since I have downloaded the app I have also found other functions useful, such as checking for roadworks and setting up school closure alerts – which I think is a great feature for parents.”

Once downloaded, the app asks for a postcode to tailor services to the relevant council area; covering Newcastleunder-Lyme, Lichfield, Cannock Chase, Tamworth, Stafford, Staffordshire Moorlands, Staffordshire South and East Staffordshire.

Staffordshire Public Sector Partnership Chair, Dionne Lowndes, said: “As a partnership, local councils in Staffordshire are committed to providing people with a platform to self-serve digitally.

A lot of people want to interact with the public sector in this way at a time and place that is convenient to them and the myStaffs App provides this platform.

“By self-serving it also means that public sector staff have more capacity to help those who still wish to use traditional channels and the most vulnerable people who need our help the most.”

eanwhile, a new text messaging service for 11-19 year olds, which they can use for confidential advice and support from health care professionals, went live at the start of November.

ChatHealth has been introduced by Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation Trust’s (MPFT’s) Families’ Health and Wellbeing Service (0-19), which includes school nursing, and is an easy way for young people to confidentially ask for help about a range of issues, or make an appointment with a school nurse.

They can also find out how to access other local services including emotional support or sexual health services.

Kieron Murphy, Managing Director Children and Families Care Group at MPFT said: “With young people increasingly using technology to access services we felt ChatHealth was ideal to encourage them to engage with the team.

"It’s really important that young people feel they have someone to contact to ask questions about issues connected with their health and wellbeing, and our Families’ Health and Wellbeing Service (019) can support them on a wide range of issues.”

Messages sent to the dedicated numbers - 07520 615723 if the young person lives in Stoke-on-Trent or 07520 615721 if the young person lives elsewhere in Staffordshire - are delivered to a secure website, and responded to by trained professionals from MPFT’s Families’ Health and Wellbeing Service (019), including school nurses.

Anyone who texts the service out of hours receives a bounce back message explaining where to get help if their question is urgent, and when they can expect a response. Texts are usually replied to within one working day.

Young people messaging the service will be able to receive advice and signposting on a wide array of subjects including bullying, health, drugs, selfesteem, relationships, and sexual health.

ChatHealth is also available to parents across Staffordshire to use for guidance and signposting on issues including weaning, behaviour, developmental concerns and concerns regarding their child’s weight or emotional wellbeing.

New head for Edenhurst

denhurst Prep School has welcomed a new Headteacher.

Mike Hibbert has taken over as Head at Edenhurst Preparatory School, in Westlands Avenue, Newcastle-under-Lyme, following the retirement of Nick Copestick who was Head of the school for 42 years.

Speaking about his new role, he said: “The minute I walked through the doors, I knew Edenhurst was the kind of school I wanted to be a part of.

It is a lovely place to be – the sense of community and family is clearly evident. Edenhurst is a place where children are the absolute priority and this resonates with my own beliefs.”

“I have a very strong staff team.

Some of them have been here for years and it is good to have that expertise.

Speaking about his predecessor, he said: “I find it truly inspirational that Nick devoted his whole life to this school. I am looking forward to developing strong relationships with pupils, parents and staff and am honoured to be given the opportunity to continue Nick’s good work.

he Diabetes UK North Staffordshire Local Group offers support and information for everyone with diabetes and their carers in ST1 to ST16 postcode areas.

Anyone is welcome to get involved.

There has been a local group representing people with diabetes in a variety of formats in North Staffordshire since 1947.

North Staffs is one of the worst areas in the country for people with diabetes and also for amputations as a result of the complications relating to diabetes.

Diabetes is a serious, lifelong condition where your blood glucose level is too high. There are two main types, Type 1 and Type 2. They’re different conditions, but they’re both serious.

The group is run by an annually elected volunteer committee and is part of a network of local groups around the UK, supported by Diabetes UK. Whilst they do not offer any medical advice, they do provide support, signposting to other services and the chance to share experiences of living with diabetes. They also supply packs of information about diabetes and its effects to all the doctor's surgeries in North Staffs for them to hand out to all their newly diagnosed diabetes

patients.

Meetings are held the second Wednesday of the month; except January and August, at Bradwell Lodge Community Centre, Bradwell Lane, Porthill, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, ST5 8PS. These commence at 7:30pm unless otherwise stated and are free to attend and relate to Diabetes and its complications.

Refreshments are served at the end of the meeting and all are welcome to participate.

Motoring mistakes that can lead to you breaking the law

uch as you may strive to be a safe and courteous driver, you could actually be breaking the law without realising it.

Here are a few motoring mistakes that could get you into hot water with the law.

Putting the main driver down as a ‘named’ driver on your insurance This is illegal and, as well as invalidating your insurance, could result in you landing yourself in court for insurance fraud – a criminal offence which carries fines of up to £5,000 and six points on your licence.

Failing to buckle up your pets Without restraints in a car, dogs and other animals can distract the driver or become missiles in the event of an accident or sudden braking.

Failure to buckle your pets up by using harnesses, cages or pet carriers breaks the law and invalidates your car insurance.

Using your mobile phone as a sat nav in an unfixed position Phones used as a sat nav must be fixed to a windscreen or dashboard and easily visible.

Holding it in your hand or placing it on the

passenger seat or on your lap is illegal and can attract six points on your licence and a £200 fine.

If you have had your licence for less than two years, you could also face a driving ban.

Driving in the middle lane of the motorway If you’re a middle lane hogger you are actually guilty of careless driving for which the punishment is three points and a £100 fine.

Beeping your horn in anger Your horn should only be used to alert someone that you are there. Using it as a means of venting your frustration at other people’s inconsiderate driving could be met with a £30 fine.
