The university started to operate after four years, initially with 68 students. It underwent many name changes before settling to its current name in 1997 under the Universities Act. The NUI Galway is one of the best universities in Ireland for international students. It has 16 schools and 4 colleges and more than 17,000 students studying at its one campus in Galway, Ireland.

It has many notable people as its faculty, such as William King, a geologist, and Alice Perry, an engineer. The institute has accreditations from CAI, ACCA, CPA, and CIMA on its accounting programs.
